Ferguson fallout: Missouri calmer, but the protests still having an impact

posted at 8:41 am on August 15, 2014 by Noah Rothman

The protests in Ferguson, Missouri appeared to be calmer on Thursday night than they had in the past. Some attributed the decline in violence from demonstrators and heavy-handed responses from police to the decision by Gov. Jay Nixon to put Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, an African-American, in charge of the town’s security.

In a tactical U-turn, Johnson, and a handful of black officers without body armour walked among thousands of protesters filling the streets of the mostly black St. Louis suburb, demanding justice for the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

“We just want to be able to come and demonstrate together without the fear of being shot. It’s that simple,” said 53-year-old protester Cat Daniels, an Iraq veteran. “What you see tonight is people coming together. When that kid was killed the hurt and the pain was real.”

But the protests have had an impact across the country, and demonstrators seeking to express solidarity with the protesters in Ferguson have turned on in a variety of places including New York City’s Times Square.

Via American Power blog, CBS News revealed that thousands of protesters flooded Broadway to protest the situation in Ferguson. The city continues to reel from the death of Eric Garner who passed after a police officer used a chokehold in order to subdue him. That death has been ruled a homicide, and New York City lawmakers are petitioning Attorney General Eric Holder to pursue a Department of Justice investigation into that incident.

There was a similar scene playing out last night in Chicago, where hundreds turned out in Daley Plaza to protest the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown where they chanted slogans like “black lives matter” and “no justice, no peace.”

Around the world, reactions to the episode in Ferguson have been passionate. In Russia, supporters of Vladimir Putin are seizing on the events in Missouri as an example of why the United States is in no position to lecture Russia on its foreign or domestic affairs.

“Obama isn’t satisfied killing Libyans, Syrians, and Ukrainians, [so] U.S. officials have sent the police to go kill Americans,” one Russian said in a Tweet directed at former U.S. Ambassador Mike McFaul.

“All in all, it seems that the Americans have started their own Maiden in Ferguson,” wrote Egor Prosvirnin, a supporter of Ukraine’s pro-Russian separatists and editor of the website Sputnik & Pogorm, in reference to the Kiev square where protesters gathered and ultimately ousted former Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych. “What do you think? Should Russia grant Obama asylum in Rostov after the Ferguson Maidanites seize Washington?”

They have even seized on statements like Russia watcher and The New Republic columnist Julia Ioffe who some Russian readers marveled had compared the United States response to the violence in Ferguson to how Russia manages domestic affairs unfavorably.

In spite of the fact that the situation in Ferguson seems to be cooling, it is apparently only heating up in cities across America and around the world.

HumpBot Salvation on August 15, 2014 at 9:54 AM

Hours prior to taking off for his Martha’s Vineyard millionaires’ paradise vacation, White House staff in conjunction with someone from the Pentagon, attempted to update the president on international security concerns, namely those focused on both Syria and Iraq, as well as the ongoing Gaza conflict, an attempt that was brushed off by a clearly annoyed Barack Obama who wanted nothing more than to turn his back on the demands of a job he long ago grew tired of.

The staff member in question was apparently Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken. The name of the Pentagon official could not be confirmed.

Blinken entered Barack Obama’s private, second floor study and then soon after was seen following the president down the hallway adjacent to Valerie Jarrett’s office with the Pentagon official in tow. A clearly annoyed President Obama waved away Blinken’s attempt to have a moment to update the president on the various situations in the Middle East, the Commander in Chief mumbling the following as he then quickened his pace toward the Private Residence:

“Don’t bother me with this sh*t. Update Susan or take it to Denis. You know the drill.”

Blinken and the Pentagon official were left standing in the middle of the second floor hallway and then soon after made their way back downstairs to the West Wing.

Nice.

I’m not sure how many times I have to repeat myself on this, I wasn’t opining on the police treatment of the rioters but rather their actions of shoving people into jail cells without charge, and then shoving them out later with not even so much as the signature of an admitting officer on a piece of paper.

But whatever. Gotta break a few Constitutional rights because security. Or something.

Why isn’t this be characterized as left-wing anti-government violence?

p0s3r on August 15, 2014 at 9:56 AM

Let’s keep two things in mind here. First: there are folks in Ferguson who aren’t interested in rioting and looting. Those folks seemed to be ‘outsiders’ (and I’m betting money they came from East St Louis, across the river) for the most part. There have been plenty of peaceful protests.

The other thing to keep in mind: the police have over-reacted in an attempt to keep things from exploding into South Central or Watts. They seem to have been eager to use their new toys from Homeland Security and to treat everyone as if they were a violent anarchist bent on destruction.

My concern is the constant relation of this to race. Yes, the hucksters (Sharpton, Jackson, et al.) provide some of that, as does the media. But the locals have failed to make this a broader issue, imho.

I think that one of the militias that helped out Mr Bundy should show up to chat with community leaders about giving the issue broader appeal. He should make the pitch that they will help the community police itself and stand in solidarity with them in marches – as long as the issue is one of police thuggery in general and not one solely of race. It would be great PR for both groups (though the optics would SUCK for the race hucksters – an added benefit). And, perhaps, in the long run you could get the community arming itself as well – making it more self-sufficient and less reliant on government to take care of it.

HumpBot Salvation on August 15, 2014 at 9:58 AM

[Dorian] Johnson says he was within arm’s reach of both Brown and the officer. He looked over at Brown and saw blood pooling through his shirt on the right side of the body.

“The whole time [the officer] was holding my friend until the gun went off,” Johnson noted.

Brown and Johnson took off running together. There were three cars lined up along the side of the street. Johnson says he ducked behind the first car, whose two passengers were screaming. Crouching down a bit, he watched Brown run past.

“Keep running, bro!,” he said Brown yelled. Then Brown yelled it a second time. Those would be the last words Johnson’s friend, “Big Mike,” would ever say to him.

Brown made it past the third car. Then, “blam!” the officer took his second shot, striking Brown in the back. At that point, Johnson says Brown stopped, turned with his hands up and said “I don’t have a gun, stop shooting!”

By that point, Johnson says the officer and Brown were face-to-face. The officer then fired several more shots. Johnson described watching Brown go from standing with his hands up to crumbling to the ground and curling into a fetal position.

If you can read that and still think the people in Ferguson don’t have a reason to be outraged and protest then you are an a-hole.

We’ll let the judicial process and the courts figure that out. From what we’ve heard in the media, it doesn’t look good for the cop, and if that’s what the facts of the case are and he was the bad actor, let him receive the fullest penalty the law can give.

Mobs and journalists aren’t particularly good at determining the facts of cases in their attempts to conduct trial-by-mob and trial-by-media, and eyewitness testimony is unreliable.

So sit down, have a Coke, and chill the F out until the investigation is completed.

HumpBot Salvation on August 15, 2014 at 10:03 AM

I understand that. But one of the prime problems in many of these communities is that only two groups are armed: the gang-bangers and the cops. Everyone else is just a victim waiting to happen.

Yes, I said the “community arming itself” but the larger intent is arming individuals in the community – thereby empowering the community to take care of itself, rather than relying upon so-called “professional” police. Communities that take responsibility for themselves have fewer problems than ones that act as children to a government in loco parentis.

A militia is nothing more than the drawing together of those in the community that are able and willing to take care of themselves. If we had more communities in our country with that capability, we wouldn’t have the perceived need for heavily militarized police, imho. The elitists have – and not just in law and order – successfully propagandized the population to believe that so many things are only doable by “the professionals”. That is fundamentally contrary to the American ideal. Return to that ideal and you can eliminate most of the massive national bureaucracy and return Congress to sitting around speechifying most of its days away. That’s a good thing.

You may argue it isn’t possible to return to that. Fine. But I don’t think we should give up trying.

HumpBot Salvation on August 15, 2014 at 10:25 AM

It took them 6 days to come up with this BS story..

it’s the “they all look alike” defense because some black male allegedly did a robbery nearby.

Ned Pepper on August 15, 2014 at 10:03 AM

I saw that coming.

it only took one day for Sharpton and the BP to roll
into town, and scream all White people are murdering racists.

Yeah, the whole Police Dept is guilty. it’s one massive coverup,
just like O.J. that poor black kid just wanted some Skittles..

all 6′-4″ 250 lbs. of him.

ToddPA on August 15, 2014 at 10:28 AM

Geez Humpy you need a nap ? Let me try again, I’ll type slower so you can better follow along… I was reffering ONLY to the comments on this site NOT the articles themselves. But I guess you have the plan to win elections by pushing away minorities and discounting there concerns because again….black on black crime… ? Enjoy the ride down fella folks like you are the reason we are losing .

Von Kleist on August 15, 2014 at 10:20 AM

Geez Kleist…you’re as stupid as I originally thought. I WAS referring to the comments in the numerous articles on this SITE. Plenty on comments about police brutality, over reach and over militarization.

And once again you ignorant azzhole…no one is discounting police brutality. But it’s cute that you think you can get 2% more of the black vote but your hand-wringing and crying. Now again, kindly GFY.

HumpBot Salvation on August 15, 2014 at 10:29 AM

RE

: So pandering is your cup of tea, eh?

We should place their perception of being abused by cops ahead of the reality that most of their misery comes from their fellow blacks. Got it. I suppose you’re going to tell me that amnesty is necessary because…elections.

Bitter Clinger on August 15, 2014 at 10:24 AM

Nope I think a much better way to win elections and have the control to get this country headed in the right direction is by completly ignoring large (and growing) segments of society… That your plan too ?

Von Kleist on August 15, 2014 at 10:31 AM

Go fukk yourself CW, I’m sure you have plenty of experience at it.

The robbery is mentioned only in the last paragraph of the shitheads at this enterprise.

Von Kleist on August 15, 2014 at 10:34 AM

Hate to tell you Von Kleist the real world needs to change before you can even worry about trying to convince someone who to vote for. That is going to take a long time to try and convince someone to change.

Yawn, while don’t you get to work then skippy. Because the whole election and future of our country depends on what people write about in comment sections of political blogs.

HumpBot Salvation on August 15, 2014 at 10:40 AM

Here we go with the contrived story (lie) to justify murdering this young man. This why we had all this silence for the pass four to five days. My question is, if were the potential robbery suspect, why would the officer tell the two young men to: “get the f*ck on the sidewalk or get the f*ck outta the street.” The Justice Department should warn this department about collusion to obstruct justice. This is a complete fabricated story to get a murderer off.

Sounds like the moral of the story is… If you rob a convenience store, don’t walk down the street or you might be told by the cops to walk on the sidewalk like a proper convenience store robber should.

Makes perfect sense. Excellent police work.

How about physical assaulting the owner of those cigars while you take them?

Robbery:

The taking of money or goods in the possession of another, from his or her person or immediate presence, by force or intimidation.

HumpBot Salvation on August 15, 2014 at 10:42 AM

More reasons not to believe the Ferguson police. They have a violent history of criminal behavior, conspiracy, and perjury:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/08/15/the-day-ferguson-cops-were-caught-in-a-bloody-lie.html

I’m sure more investigation will turn up a large number of these kinds of incidents in Ferguson (and most other police departments if they were investigated). All of the cops in the Ferguson Police Department should be charge with assault, attempted murder, murder, perjury and conspiracy to cover up crimes. I’m sure other crimes would also come to light such as rape, sexual assault, theft and illegal drug and weapons crimes.

The DA at the time should be investigated and indited as well for failing to charge these cops with perjury and conspiracy.

Yeah, it’s obvious that the po-po hired the same film crew that faked the moon landing to put Brown in that Loot & Scoot Convenience Store assaulting the store owner. I mean even with modern technology recordings like that take a couple days to generate.

Oh and who said the officer told the two to get the fcuk out of the street? Have we determined if they are part of the conspiracy or not.

Your hero’s shine is beginning to tarnish, Neddy.

We should ignore the previous history of the “victim”…including the previous 30 minutes.

And we should convict the cop and entire police force for something that happened earlier in an non related case and for the sins of all police everywhere.

HumpBot Salvation on August 15, 2014 at 10:48 AM

malkinmania on August 15, 2014 at 10:51 AM

So uh… Why does puting a black man in the sheriffs office “solve the problem?”

Yeah yeah – we’ve all been conditioned to know why but take a step back here-

Why not a Hispanic officer? Asian? Another white officer?

The left talks up a color blind society but since when does the color of a persons skin define their cultural understanding? Specifically this is the same argument leftists make about Clarence Thomas.

Perhaps our community trolls can enlighten me here?

Skywise on August 15, 2014 at 10:52 AM

CW on August 15, 2014 at 10:53 AM

BTW-
For the pajamaboy crowd whining yesterday about the militarization of the police (I’m looking at you Rand Paul)…..
Remember back to that Nevada standoff over grazing rights with Cliven Bundy? The Las Vegas sheriffs actually had sniper rifles pointed at the protesters. I don’t recall the kind of pearl clutching then that I’ve seen over the audacity of deploying cops in riot gear to deal with the rioting and looting of a community.

Happy Nomad on August 15, 2014 at 10:10 AM

Really? You don’t recall Rand Paul speaking out about that? I thought that was pretty well known, that he had opposed this.

The next day, in a radio interview with WHAS in Louisville, Paul said, “I think there’s an opposite thing to what Harry Reid said, and that’s the federal government shouldn’t violate the law, nor should we have 48 federal agencies carrying weapons and having SWAT teams,” according to The Hill.
