Landrieu to reimburse taxpayers for private charter flight to fundraiser that may have broken federal law

posted at 10:01 pm on August 14, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

Oops:

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D., La.) has decided to reimburse her Senate office $5,700 for a chartered flight from New Orleans to Shreveport for an official event, then Shreveport to Dallas for a fundraiser.

Federal law and Senate rules require expenses to be split between campaign and Senate accounts when campaign functions overlap with official business.

CNN:

Under federal law and Senate rules, the cost of a trip that includes official and campaign stops must often be prorated between Senate and campaign accounts. However, if the campaign activity is “incidental” to the official trip, the expense doesn’t need to be split up. In this case, Landrieu’s Senate office picked up the whole cost of the trip.

Asked Wednesday about the trip, Landrieu’s Senate spokesman, Matthew Lehner, said in a statement:

“Sen. Landrieu was invited to an official evening event in Shreveport. She was traveling back to D.C. through Dallas, and a fundraiser in Dallas was added to her schedule,” he said. “Out of an abundance of caution in case there was a cost allocation error connected to this flight, the Senate will be reimbursed for the (Shreveport to Dallas) flight.”

When you’re in a tight race, it’s never good to be billing the good people of Louisiana, many of whom will never see the inside of a chartered plane, $6,000 for your cushy seat and in-flight mimosa in an election year.

She’s a scumbag criminal and votes with Obama/Pelosi/Reid on every meaningful vote, but she still might retain a Senate seat in a conservative state.

It’s insane.

Probably won’t even dent her poll numbers. Having a “D” next to your name or being an “R” like Cochran gives you a lot of leeway in the media.

How generous of this latest CRIMINAL Liberal…after breaking the law, rather than go to jail she is willing to reimburse tax payers for the money she ‘stole’. How liberating it must be to know no matter what laws you break, being a Liberal MAY mean saying (but not meaning) you’re sorry every now and then…but NEVER means having to go to jail, like all the ‘little people’ you $crew all the time.

Why is it that when pols break federal law by “misappropriating” money which they should know not to do, they always get off with simply, “I’ll pay it back, since I got caught”? Doesn’t work so well for “we, the People.”

Jail, otherwise there is no deterrent.

More likely the AF pilot and crew decided to have a technical problem on the spot.

Looks to me like she’s agreed to pay-back the funds, and maybe not even out of necessity, but rather “out of an abundance of caution.”

So we’re all good here, right ?

I can’t even begin to tell you how sick I am of Democrats, who have been in Congress for years, who don’t know the rules, and their stupid, ignorant voters who believe them, when they tell them they don’t know the rules.

Democrats, in Louisiana, are dumb. They’ve been voting for Democrats for years. They don’t know any better. but to listen to Mary Landreiu, you really have to believe she thinks her voters are the dumbest people on the planet.

To top it all off, she has millions in her war chest and could well afford to pay for her flights without trying to sneak one past the taxpayers. McCaskill(D) MO had similar plane problems but was still reelected. They’re just so used to using other people’s money, they can’t help themselves.

As a leading Democrat – she should be exempt from any DOJ or IRS investigation, action or brow beating.

These are the Obama laws of fairness.

Obamatrix on August 15, 2014 at 9:57 AM

To me, there is hardly any real reason for a Senator to charge his or her Senate office for a plane ride. Or any ride anywhere at all. I guess I might excuse trips for Senate business, but to me that would require that a person ONLY do Senate business and return within twelve hours to D.C., and not hang around in the home state, and it would have to be when the Senate is in session.

The President gets to fly around on Presidential business, but I think that they should be charged for campaign trips and vacations. A nominal amount, if necessary, and let all Presidents vacation on the taxpayer at Camp David. Our Air Force One, has been sent out for campaign stops to raise money for the DNC where the cash raised would not cover the expense of the flight. Once there is a political stop on a trip, the president needs to chip in. Something, anything. We do realize he is a “prisoner” to quote Mrs. Obama, of Air Force One.

Mrs. Obama’s vacations though, are another thing. She never goes “home” for a break to Chicago. Don’t the kids want to see their old friends? Not great advertising for Chicago! There should be no question about flying home, to a home owned by the first family. But Jaunts paid for by taxpayers to hob nob with the rich and famous? Mrs. Obama should “act more like a social worker,” and holiday at home on a budget. Like everyone else…Who understands the plight of people like me? Right.
