Video: American dominance prevails…at world yo-yo championship

posted at 9:21 pm on August 13, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

Meet Gentry Stein, the 18-year-old Californian superstar of the yo-yoing world. He hopes to be the Tiger Woods of yo-yoing, creating a young, ahem, spin on the sport that he thinks can attract new fans and new respect. His championship routine has gone viral this week., its combination of electronic music and X-Games showmanship winning over the Internet.

But is it about more than that? Is it about watching America succeed, if only in an activity somewhere slightly above hacky sack and slightly below bowling? Take heart, fellow Americans.

I don’t think yo-yoing’s my thing, still, but it is pretty impressive. He’s almost so fluid you forget that thing has a string, but if you try to remember that and that he’s not getting it tangled—whoa. According to Stein, a lot of this is made possible by a relatively recent switch in the yo-yo industry from “fixed-axle” to ball bearings as the spinning mechanism. The ball bearing, according to Wikipedia (and common sense) allows for longer spins and more tricks.

Unclear whether he has groupies. MTV asked him, but he was sitting next to his girlfriend at the time.

‘dominance prevailing’ is kind of like ‘prevalence dominating’. neither phrase makes much sense when you think about them.

“American dominance prevails” makes perfect sense.

For an example of the opposite, consider that America has possessed military dominance on the planet since the end of WWII — but owing to morons like you making policy decisions, we continually fail to prevail …

Another one of those “sports.”

Maybe we should drop 30,000 yo-yo’s over Northern Iraq. Distract ISIS from …

This is pathetic. I’m sorry, but it really is.

I get home from working all day and finally have time to catch up on the days events..

I’m out. We got Ed & Allah left. There is no point to threads so woefully silly as this on a political blog.

I just got off of work after 11 hours and it’s top of the page. Besides, it’s like passing a car crash,, you slow down and look. I can handle, and enjoy the lighthearted threads, but you don’t lead with them.

Palate cleansers come last, not out of the gate.

Is there something of substance to follow? Or is this just the warning buzzer for qotd?

I could offer this content for FREE and get turned down.

A Special Forces team flew to the mountain and found fewer people than expected, and those remaining were also in a better condition than feared, the Pentagon said.

So it appears that we’re bombing and invading Iraq (with bootless special forces troops) based on faulty intel? Or did Obama LIE about the intel? And where is Halliburton?

I love this stuff, not on a poli blog necessarily but if the dude walked into the bar I would order a round for him after he did that routine.

This is what separates us from those monkey turd savages over in the mideast, we don’t have a few million degenerates looking to chop this guy’s head off because he doesn’t have a beard or because an ancient prophet never owned a yo-yo.

Bishop on August 13, 2014 at 10:15 PM

That is awesome…people admire someone running up a floor in their shorts and putting a ball through a hoop, or standing in one spot and hitting a ball thrown at them, 6or 7 times a game, and they call that amazing…

This guy blows all of those other sports away…is it worth anything? Probably not, but more impressive than 90 minutes of soccer and a 1-1 tie…

According to Stein, a lot of this is made possible by a relatively recent switch in the yo-yo industry from “fixed-axle” to ball bearings as the spinning mechanism.

Over twenty years ago, so I guess that might just qualify as “relatively recent”. I have a teflon sleeve ball bearing yo-yo that old sitting in my drawers. Aluminum shaft, chrome steel belted clear plastic body. It might be old, but it gets the job done.

Meh, the performance was up and down.

No, just joking :)
That was impressive. I’m glad we are #1 at yoyo.
I didn’t see him do any of the classics like “walking the dog” and “loop the loop” but hey the sport has changed I guess. Couldn’t they do it to some Buddy Holly instead of the techno – it would be more appropriate – no?. Overall ,though, I’m proud that we dominated.

This is why HotGas is hundreds of times better than, say, Little Green Footballs. If you don’t like what’s being posted, you can skip it. If a wrighter doesn’t like what you say, they’re not likely to permaban you like good ole’ Chuckie does.

I, for one, don’t mind a light-hearted thread, every once in a while. It’s good to take a break, now and then, from watching the world burn.

Kanga on August 14, 2014 at 3:22 AM

That may be true for Allahpundit and Ed, but look at this previous threat from Mary Katharine Ham. (See below) I don’t know if she followed through on her nasty, ill-considered threat, but she has also said “screw you” to a commenter on here who disagreed with her.

Mary Katharine Ham, who apparently has come out in favor of “immigration reform” and who, through many of her articles, seems more concerned with appearing acceptable to liberal colleagues than anything else, seems like a more natural fit for MSNBC.

Exactly, and if you bad-mouth her or question her motives, you’ll get deleted or banned. Have as much respect as the Romney camp has had for her. It’s a far better way to honor her son’s memory than lashing out at her because she happens to like Obama or not like Romney.

Kanga, no and mostly no, regarding “is there a way to edit posts.” No, once posted, I have not been able to re-edit a post. There is a “preview” option of course. But new posters should also know that if you take over a few minutes to complete a post, it will be completely deleted since there is auto-refresh in the page code which Hot Air refuses to address (I suppose there may be different behavior in other browsers). Therefore I suggest writing your post in a word processor/text editor and then copy/paste it into the comment box. Alternatively, copy the text in the comment box regularly if you can’t finish it in a few minutes.

Finally, nothing wrong with yo-yo’s. The trolls are out.
