Video: Remember when Obama took credit for pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq instead of blaming Maliki for it?

posted at 6:01 pm on August 12, 2014 by Allahpundit

We all remember. How could we not? He’d been saying it every farking day for three years — until this summer, when suddenly it became something he’d done reluctantly, forced on the U.S. by an obstinate Iraqi parliament and a short-sighted, foolhardy Nouri al-Maliki. Any theories as to what changed? What could have happened in Iraq to make The One, who got reelected by reminding voters that he brought the boys home, wish that maybe he still had a few boys left in the field over there?

A dandy little edit here by the Free Beacon, via Ace. I know I’ve linked it before but the piece you want to read as accompaniment is Iraq hawk turned dove Peter Beinart lamenting all the ways Obama screwed up post-Bush American policy in the country. O wants you to believe at the end of the video here that he pushed hard to keep a residual American force inside Iraq for counterterrorism (i.e. counter-ISIS) operations but it’s simply not true. He didn’t push hard for it; when Maliki initially resisted his demand that U.S. troops be granted immunity from prosecution in Iraqi courts, O took that as his cue to pull everyone out. And that wasn’t the only time he indulged Maliki’s dumbest impulses. The story of the U.S. vis-a-vis Iraq after 2009, writes Beinart, is a story of disinterest and disengagement:

The decline of U.S. leverage in Iraq simply reinforced the attitude Obama had held since 2009: Let Maliki do whatever he wants so long as he keeps Iraq off the front page.

On December 12, 2011, just days before the final U.S. troops departed Iraq, Maliki visited the White House. According to Nasr, he told Obama that Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, an Iraqiya leader and the highest-ranking Sunni in his government, supported terrorism. Maliki, argues Nasr, was testing Obama, probing to see how the U.S. would react if he began cleansing his government of Sunnis. Obama replied that it was a domestic Iraqi affair. After the meeting, Nasr claims, Maliki told aides, “See! The Americans don’t care.”

In public remarks after the meeting, Obama praised Maliki for leading “Iraq’s most inclusive government yet.” Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister, Saleh al-Mutlaq, another Sunni, told CNN he was “shocked” by the president’s comments. “There will be a day,” he predicted, “whereby the Americans will realize that they were deceived by al-Maliki … and they will regret that.”

And now the day has come. Remember that the next time O walks out to the podium and acts indignant about Maliki clinging to power.

One more bit, this from Dexter Filkins, on just how much of a fight O put up in demanding a residual troop presence:

President Obama, too, was ambivalent about retaining even a small force in Iraq. For several months, American officials told me, they were unable to answer basic questions in meetings with Iraqis—like how many troops they wanted to leave behind—because the Administration had not decided. “We got no guidance from the White House,” Jeffrey told me. “We didn’t know where the President was. Maliki kept saying, ‘I don’t know what I have to sell.’ ” At one meeting, Maliki said that he was willing to sign an executive agreement granting the soldiers permission to stay, if he didn’t have to persuade the parliament to accept immunity. The Obama Administration quickly rejected the idea. “The American attitude was: Let’s get out of here as quickly as possible,” Sami al-Askari, the Iraqi member of parliament, said.

Obama used to be more candid about that, back when it was to his benefit politically to be so. That’s the second clip below, which you also hopefully remember.

Romney may have been squishy on a lot of domestic policy issues, but he was an adult when it came to foreign policy ones (see also, GHWB & GWB). But between so many on the Right wanting perfection, and so many on the Left wanting their ears greased, today we have the Government we deserve.

Even as it falls apart, more and more, day by day.

Shocking Video Unearthed Obama Hypocrisy On Iraq Success

Uploaded on Feb 27, 2009
*************************

Speaking at Camp Lejeune Today Feb 27, Obama talks about the success in Iraq which he and the Democratic Party tried to undermine continually. One week ago President Obama also called for 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan to stabilize the situation, yet argued against the same policy in 2007 in Iraq. Obama almost appeared to take credit for the improving situation in Iraq, yet this video shows Barack Obama and Joe Biden in their own words showing how absolutely wrong they have been at every turn and how they can’t be trusted on foreign policy.

Narcissist in Chief strikes again…

With an eye on the 2012 election he was determined to fulfill his campaign promise of ending the war. But what’s more, President Obama went farther than even candidate Obama did. Candidate Obama promised: “After this redeployment, a residual force in Iraq would perform limited missions: going after any remnants of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, protecting American service members and, so long as the Iraqis make political progress, training Iraqi security forces.” President Obama didn’t even do that. Indeed, he actually left the Iraqi people hanging out to dry, with dry being the operative word in a country that can only be described as a tinderbox surrounded by firebugs.

…Unfortunately for Barack Obama, his pursuit of political expediency vs. real leadership just might be the thing that torpedoes his cherished legacy of greatness. However unlikely it is to diminish him in the eyes of his worshipers, the rest of the country will see this episode for what it is, Barack Obama unleashed, in all of his unvarnished, narcissistic glory, bloodshed and consequences be damned, there’s an election to be won.

Everybody plays politics except Obama. When he does it it’s not politics.

That’s what he really thinks.

SteveMG on August 12, 2014 at 6:32 PM

Here’s the thing about Obama….

He’s nothing but a Community Organizer, Agitator and rabble rouser – much like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

Obama was swept into State office by minority votes – he advertised himself as a Ward Healer. Whatever he said they believed, even if what he promised were outright falsehoods and lies.

After spending a term in the State Senate, Obama continued his “career” by lying to the uninformed youth vote. The promises of Hope. And. Change. He won the Presidency. Yay.

Obama has figured out that he can no longer lie. He is no longer viable or believable. He has lost all credibility and integrity – not just with the youth but with almost EVERY American. Even his base is clinging to some sort of hope that he will somehow come through in the end. They were fools.

It took 5 years and 57 States to realize that this man is a flat out huckster and fraud. I don’t think he will last during his next two years in office.

I also look forward to him running a Tamale Stand while shucking and jiving Obama Phones on the streets of Chicago.

An appropriate end to an inappropriate and disastrous presidency.

Good riddance.

Obama dismissing Romney and the SOFA during that 2012 debate will continue to be the bane of his attempts to pass the buck along with his word being trustworthy, regardless of whether or not the media cares enough to report his obvious hypocrisy and — at best — his intentional misleading of the American public in order to escape blame for the current situation in Iraq.

Of course, I think he flat-out lied knowing full well that he likely wouldn’t be called out on it. It’s a shame that we send people overseas to promote free speech and a fair press… while we’re stuck with this media.

I remember a newspaper story years ago of a couple in Phoenix who ended up in court with the IRS. What was originally a claim of a few thousand dollars had turned into tens of thousands. The couple claimed they never got any notices. Things got to point where the husband blew his brains out so his wife could use the life insurance money to continue paying their legal fees. He even left a note that said how much he loved her and that to look at it as purely a business transaction.

Finally, it was found out the notices had been sent to the wrong address because of a clerical error over the years. IIRC, the Judge ruled in favor of the wife. When asked why the IRS didn’t apologize to the wife for the loss of her husband, an official said, “We apologize when it’s our fault.”

Good luck Brave New World with the IRS having even more control of our lives.

Obama did take credit then for removing U.S. Troops, under the Bush/Maliki Status of Forces agreement (not the 16 months that he promised during his 2008 campaign). Bush should have got the credit as it was, and is, called the Bush/Maliki Status of Forces agreement for a reason after all. Even Bush realized that ‘we’ couldn’t stay there in perpetuity. At that time the Iraqis had a well equipped, American trained 800,000 man army. But I gues you can’t shine shiite.

It is now a disaster, but up to that point was also a disaster, and an even bigger one, as over 4,000 American troops lost their lives, with thousands more losing one or more limbs, and for nothing remotely worth the price. If the pins come off, and after eight long years, many troops serving 4 or more tours, the leg does not bear weight the operation was a failure. If the Trillion Dollar Highway To Nowhere won’t support traffic, it was built on quicksand.

I recall that early on, when Malaki had been in power not too long, he was playing sectarian games with the Sunnis. Bush knew that inclusiveness was key to a successful nation, and he leaned on Malaki. To everyone’s surprise, Malaki complied very substantially. There was talk, only partially hyperbolic, of Malaki possibly becoming Iraq’s George Washington.

But obama’s regime brought the reality this article describes. Obama simply didn’t care about anything but short-term optics. Malaki saw this, and reverted to his sectarian ways. Everyone soon knew the government was not viable, and the next thing was the army fell apart upon the advance of a far inferior ISIS.

Elections have consequences, indeed, and American elections have global consequences.
