Obama: Hey, it wasn’t my idea to leave Iraq

posted at 6:31 pm on August 10, 2014 by Jazz Shaw

We may as well finish up the weekend on yet another inexplicable appearance by the Commander in Chief. And this one is a doozy, picked up by Joel Gehrke at The Corner. The President, during his brief, pre-tee off time availability this weekend, chose to address what a mess Iraq currently is and whether or not our lack of presence there had anything to do with it. Well, it did, but it obviously wasn’t his fault. He never really wanted to leave in the first place.

President Obama refused to take responsibility for the lack of U.S. troops in Iraq, saying that American soldiers had to pull out due to political pressure from Iraqi leaders.

“This issue keeps on coming up as if this was my decision,” Obama retorted when asked if he had any second thoughts, in light of the terrorist force taking over regions of Iraq, about having pulled all American troops out of the country. “The reason that we did not have a follow-on force in Iraq was because a majority of Iraqis did not want U.S. troops there and politically they could not pass the kind of laws that would be required to protect our troops in Iraq,” he said.

Now, normally if we wanted to refute a statement like this, we might have to go to Fox News or some conservative bastion of record keeping to find some supporting evidence. But in this case, why don’t we go straight to the horse’s mouth and check in at the White House web site.

ObamaPromiseIraq

Not good enough? How about the White House press office?

“After taking office, I announced a new strategy that would end our combat mission in Iraq and remove all of our troops by the end of 2011,” he said. “So today, I can report that, as promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year.”

The government has clearly hit the petting zoo stage of planning and execution, so let’s leave the final comment to the animals.

What a lying sack of crap. YES IT WAS his idea to leave Iraq. He campaigned on it, saying that only the war in Afghanistan was the ‘good’ war. He wants to do the same to the Afghans as he did to the Iraqis. What a piece of garbage.

Thanks again liberal idiots, for giving us the all time worst president this country has ever seen, bar none. I absolutely detest EVERY obama voter for what THEY have done to this country.

Yeah, it must really suck to have the truth pointed out about “Dear Leader” huh?

He took credit for ending the war, and he told the entire country in the debate with Romney that he, himself, opposed leaving any forces in Iraq. Now that it’s turned to liquid cow manure, it’s not his fault, it’s the fault of the Iraqis who didn’t want the troops there?

Your president is an incompetent, lying POS. Deal with it.

You know no matter how dumb Obama is, I am glad we are out of Iraq.

Ask yourself this question: Do you want American soldiers to protect and die for a country that thinks it is a good idea to pass laws that allow nine year old girls to get married to adult men, and where 91% of the Muslims population wants Sharia Law?

You see there is the problem. We can talk about keeping troops in Iraq all we want, or would it have stopped ISIS, but the question you need to ask is would it have been worth it to stay in Iraq? I say no, still today with everything that has happened, I say no. That is because if it is not ISIS, it would be some other Sunni Islamist group that would have won the “hearts and minds” of the Sunnis in Iraq and Syria. We would have to stay there forever, because we have no interest in fixing the real problem in Iraq…Islam.

So bomb away all you want, but please don’t bs me that had we have stayed…we might have won their hearts and minds and made them love us. They would not have, and they never will. We are infidels…we are scum to them.

The US should not waste our blood and resources trying to tame an insane world. It’s absolutely thankless, we get blamed no matter what we do, and the people we try to help are wholly ungrateful. Obama’s right — Iraqi public opinion was against keeping US troops in the country. They called us occupiers. Well now they get to enjoy a life free of the terrible US occupation they deplored while experiencing jihadists march through their towns beheading people and imposing Sharia law.

Actually it was Obama’s idea to leave Iraq … … in 16 months. That is what he promised in his 2008 campaign. But instead he went with the more drawn out Bush/Maliki Status Of Forces agreement. And that is why it is called the Bush/Maliki Status Of Forces agreement and not the Obama/Maliki Status Of Forces agreement nor the Obama/Obama Status Of Forces agreement.

Of course, he took credit for it at the time. He does that, you know. And now he denies it. He also does that, you know.

Sure, Maliki was “refusing” to grant US personnel civil immunity, and that became the excuse. But that was pure domestic politics for him, he had the identical position before the last SOFA. It was always going to be the last concession.

Just arm the heck out of the Nationalistic Kurds, give a new home to the Christians and non-Muslim minorities in the West, bomb some Sunni towns and important infrastructure so ISIS cannot use it, and declare victory. If the Kurds, with their new military we have provided them, then proceeds to conquer half of Iraq good for them.

Also you notice I said I am glad we are out of Iraq, not a newly created Kurdistan…we need people we can work with, not lunatics and rejects from the 7th century.

Also considering it appears we have a coup in Baghdad now happening, it should make it easy…declare Kurdistan independent and be done with this idiotic experiment of making Shia Arabs, Sunni Arabs, and Kurds live in harmony. Pick the most useful and logical and go with them.

“On Iraq, the president said he would end the war. Governor Romney said that was a tragic mistake, we should have left 30,000 — he ended it. Governor Romney said that was a tragic mistake, we should have left 30,000 troops there.”

- Joe Biden, debate

Per the NYT:

“All American forces were to leave Iraq by the end of 2011, the departure date set in an agreement signed by President George W. Bush and Mr. Maliki in 2008. Even so, Mr. Obama left the door open to KEEPING TROOPS IN IRAQ to train Iraqi forces if an agreement could be negotiated.

Convening a videoconference on Oct. 6, 2010, Mr. Biden and top American officials reviewed the options. The vice president favored a plan that would keep Mr. Maliki as prime minister, but which involved installing his main rival, Mr. Allawi, leader of the Iraqiya bloc, near the top of the pyramid. To make way for Mr. Allawi, Mr. Biden suggested that Mr. Talabani, an ethnic Kurd, be shifted from the presidency and given another position. “Let’s make him foreign minister,” Mr. Biden said, according to the notes of the meeting.

“Thanks a lot, Joe,” Mrs. Clinton said, noting that Mr. Biden had cast the Foreign Ministry as a consolation prize.

Mr. Biden also predicted that the Americans could work out a deal with a government led by Mr. Maliki. “Maliki wants us to stick around because he does not see a future in Iraq otherwise,” Mr. Biden said. “I’LL BET YOU MY VICE-PRESIDENCY MALIKI WILL EXTEND THE SOFA,” he added, he added, referring to the Status of Forces Agreement the Obama administration hoped to negotiate.

James B. Steinberg, the deputy secretary of state, questioned whether Mr. Biden’s plan would make the already inefficient Iraqi government more dysfunctional.

Admiral Mullen sent a classified letter to Mr. Donilon that recommended keeping 16,000 troops.

The attempt by Mr. Obama and his senior aides to fashion an extraordinary power-sharing arrangement between Mr. Maliki and Mr. Allawi never materialized. NEITHER DID AN AGREEMENT THAT WOULD HAVE KEPT A SMALL AMERICAN FORCE IN IRAQ TO TRAIN THE IRAQI MILITARY AND PATROL THE COUNTRY’S SKIES. A plan to use American civilians to train the Iraqi police has been severely cut back. The result is an Iraq that is less stable domestically and less reliable internationally than the United States had envisioned.”

In the end, Biden’s plan was rebuffed by the Iraqis and the SOFA was not extended.

I blame the real culprit, TOTUS. Notify it of treasonous behavior and that it will be impeached as soon as Congress moseys back into D. C. Disgusting apparatus…

Bravo Foxtrot Sierra, President Jake Blues. It was your mission from your entry in the 2008 Presidential race until now to get out of Iraq.

307wolverine blew it; this was a quote by ValJar:

In his biography of Obama, “The Bridge,” David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker, quotes White House senior adviser and longtime Obama friend Valerie Jarrett: blah blah blah 307wolverine quote

Religion determines your culture which determines your government. The poor Iraqis are trapped within Islam; the made-up man’s made-up book about a make believe god. We’ll only see change in Iraq if Iraqis move away from that dreadful religion.

I did? I just posted a quote, a famous quote. I made no attribution because regular members of this forum probably know it by heart by now. Go back and reread what I posted.

The President, during his brief, pre-tee off time availability this weekend…

“Pre-tee off time”…sounds like America, waiting with bated breath to hear what lies and revisionist history zero will come out with next…

I would take (yet another) drive past Claude Rains’ gravesite, but we’re in the middle of an electrical storm here in NH. I’m sure O’bama would blame that on Bush too!

Please someone tell me that the man is just lying thru his teeth. It ould be better to think he is just a lying bag of mouse droppings than to think he honestly believes what he says. Or that he has really lost a handle on reality.

From earlier today, Scott Johnson at Power Line:

Obama’s dishonesty is blatant and habitual. It seems to me to reflect a bad character allied with great confidence that he can get away with it.

He’s been getting away with it for over a half a century now.

I expected Obama to be bad, but even I can’t believe what a cat-ass-trophy he’s shown himself to be.

ElectricPhase on August 10, 2014 at 8:04 PM

Why exactly were we not arming the Kurds from 2011 til now so they would have had ammunition enough to hold ground?
We were not in Iraq to win anything, and as this already shows, we never were in the victory phase.
With that being the case, I did not want our troops remaining either. You do not sacrifice your soldiers for no reason, and Iraq would not be any better today than they were in 2011 if our soldiers would have stayed. It would just be another 2 years before they were overrun in 2016 instead if we left in 2013.
You cannot build character into a nation that has not been defeated. Iraq was never defeated, we simply decapitated the leadership and then moved onto winning hearts and minds.
If we can run bombing raids, drop humanitarian aid and supply the people in Iraq who have some character without endangering our troops lives, then I can support that. But I do not support sending troops in unless we are planning to crush the entire population’s will to fight. Effectively wholesale slaughter with a large amount of collateral damage and death. Unless we are willing to do what is needed to fully crush their spirits, it is pointless sacrificing our soldier’s lives.
