Video: Hamas “acts extraordinarily irresponsibly”?

posted at 8:01 am on August 7, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

When Barack Obama finally showed up to his press conference yesterday after keeping everyone waiting for seventy-four minutes, the President took the time to express his frustration with the war in Gaza. “It is important to remember,” Obama explained helpfully, “that Hamas acts extraordinarily irresponsibly when it is deliberately siting rocket launchers in population centers.”

“Irresponsibly”? It depends on what one expects from Hamas, I suppose. If one considers Hamas a run-of-the-mill political force in an armed conflict, then sure, conducting attacks from residential neighborhoods and hotels is extraordinarily irresponsible. If on the other hand Hamas is a terrorist organization, as the State Department itself defines the group, then it’s not ‘irresponsible’ but part of their strategy.

Charles Krauthammer and Ron Fournier could not believe their ears:

Krauthammer described Obama’s comments as “lethargic and disinterested and detached.” And as for that “irresponsible” line, Krauthammer said, “It’s a bloody war crime! I mean, there’s no passion, there’s no interest, there’s nothing behind it.”

Fournier, meanwhile, added, “Frat boys are extraordinarily irresponsible. Hamas is a terrorist organization that’s killing people. Words matter then you’re trying to lead a country… I’m stunned by how poorly he uses them.”

Yes … one might even say that Obama has been extraordinarily irresponsible in his rhetoric on the subject. What he’s doing is drawing an equivalence between Hamas and Israel that doesn’t exist, which is also what Israel accused Kerry of doing during his attempt to put together a cease fire. Hamas uses civilians as shields to conduct terrorist attacks on Israel, while Israel did its best to avoid civilian casualties while trying to put an end to the rocket fire aimed at their civilians by Hamas. There is a difference — a huge difference — between the two, and that difference not only matters, it’s the heart of the conflict.

Most of Obama’s pressers are an exercise in extraordinary irresponsibility anyway, but this takes the cake.

CurtZHP on August 7, 2014 at 8:11 AM

Hamas! Put those weapons down, come in the house and wash your hands! It’s time for supper!

Obama treats their terror actions like they’re some sort of unruly teenager who’s taken the car out too long for the evening. But he won’t even ground then or put a 9 p.m. curfew in, because he either harbors sympathy for their cause and/or knows that the hard-line liberals most likely to have his back as his poll numbers plunge and election day nears are the ones mostly likely to have the most anti-Israel/anti-Semetic attitudes. Don’t want to tick them off by being too hard on the guys digging the tunnels and launching the rockets from schools and hospital sites.

jon1979 on August 7, 2014 at 8:12 AM

So, just who writes these speeches? What is their background? Our presidents all live in a bubble, but this is getting cRaZy!

Aren’t presidents surrounded by people who’s sole responsibility is to make him look good? And *this* is the best they got?

Seems like his “trusted” advisers need a bit of looking into.

The evidence is in (and has been for years). At best, he’s a detached stooge. The alternative is too frightening to think about.

Lucky Pierre on August 7, 2014 at 8:14 AM

Calling Hamas “irresponsible” placates his Israel-hating base. To them, Israel is evil and whatever Hamas does is justified.

He doesn’t quite dare agree with them openly (although he absolutely does privately). Hence his equivocation.

It’s one more example of why, when The One and his VP are in the Oval Office alone, Slow Joe really is the smartest guy in the room.

If that does not worry you, it should.

I don’t think it’s logically possible to be both irresponsible and deliberate. If Hamas is deliberate in their choice of staging areas, then how can they also be simultaneously not responsible for the results of their deliberation?

“that Hamas acts extraordinarily irresponsibly when it is deliberately siting rocket launchers in population centers.”

Anyone here from the Chicagoland area? All the adverbs reminds me of good old Mayor Harold Washington’s speech mannerisms. I remember seeing clips of him on the 10:00 news in the 1980s and saying, “WTF did he just say?” At times and in extemporaneous situations like press conferences, Obama reminds me of a cleaned-up version of old Harold.

He is NOT a great writer when he’s writing. Mainly because it’s usually someone else doing the writing. Ayers ghost-wrote the vast majority of “Dreams” when it was clear Obama was going to default on his contract — the most consequential act of literary fraud in history was when Obama claimed to have written that all by his lonesome.

He’s not a great orator either. I’m stunned that everyone else is stunned and didn’t see through his game of make believe five and a half years ago.

It’s hilarious the extent to which some DC sycophants will go. I get a feed from a legal-writing guy named Ross Guberman who includes in a book he compiled of good legal writing excerpts of a brief Obama wrote for some obscure Illinois appellate case more than a decade ago.

Guberman cites Obama on four occasions, all from the same case: pages 30, 213, 256, and 270. It’s pathetic.

TarheelBen on August 7, 2014 at 8:41 AM

Callow is used in association with youth….most commonly callow youth in literature.

Obama is too old in years to be callow. He’s over 50 years old for cryin’ out loud.

The term callow youth is usually used in classic literature to describe the exuberance and reckless actions of young men who have not learned prudence…To be a callow youth one hopes that wisdom will be gained through experience and that the price paid is not too great…since a callow youth often tempts fate…

Obama is feckless and lacks any principles or character…He is defined purely by self interest and his hubris prevents him from any serious examination of his actions beyond immediate self interest…a classic characteristic of tyrants.

Obama is also fundamentally stupid…he lacks the capacity for tactical planning in a larger scope because he doesn’t understand the character of americans…only his followers.

He cannot see that he is only president of his party and has failed as a president of a nation….Because of this he is despised by other leaders on the world stage.

Obama lacks gravitas.

Even the thug Putin understands gravitas.

In contrast to Obama GWB gained gravitas while he was in office…he made some mistakes in policy but overall he gained in stature as a man and as a president.

He has said that history will judge him because that is a fundamental truth…history always judges the actions of leaders and nations.

Obama believes he can re-write history to suit his ego…again a characteristic of a tyrant.

But in the school of tyrants….Obama is more a tin-pot pretender…

workingclass artist on August 7, 2014 at 9:10 AM

They say Obama is a really cool character. Maybe he just doesn’t care, unless it affects him personally, like relating to his family, or someone who’d look like his son, if he had a son. THEN he might get a little upset. I don’t know how many dozens of times he’s invoked the names of his daughters when discussing some relevant policy.

Hamas is killing Israelis and Jews. To use Obama’s kind of lingo, they’re killing people don’t look like him, or his imaginary son. And I know that’s a horrible thing for me to say, to intimate Obama is some kind of racist, who favors people who look like he does, and minimizes and dismisses the concerns of others. But, that IS what the Left does to the Right day in and day out. And maybe with Obama there’s some evidence for it. His family, and other blacks … isn’t this what piques his concern?

Hamas … “call them irresponsible … call them unreliable … throw in undependable too …”. Hamas, what a bunch of lovable scamps!

“Fundamentally stupid” … you may be right, I don’t know.

He loves the attention he gets from campaigning, which is why he does it all the time, and in front of a crowd of his minions, I suspect he’s actually pretty good . . . after all, they’re all there to adore him & he soaks it up. The narcissism shows up in all his self-references during any speech he gives.

When it comes to actually doing the job, though – - – - that’s hard work, and while he’s at the center of the issue (because he has to make the decision) he’s not the center of attention – that “honor” belongs to whatever problem/issue is on the table.

The Presser yesterday is part of “doing the job” he’s not all that interested in doing, which is why you get “lethargic, pedestrian and vacuous.”

Everything going on at the southern border can (IMO) be explained by his ego. There’s a political calculation, yes – legalize 5,10,15 million illegals, they’ll eventually become voters & they’ll support Democrats, blah, blah, blah.

BobMbx on August 7, 2014 at 9:35 AM

Your frame of reference is wrong. When you are a supporter of Hamas, and they engage in tactics which on their face cannot possibly be defended, you dismiss said tactics as “unfortunate” and “irresponsible”. Not a war crime, just poor judgment by good-hearted people in the service of a good cause.

Getting steamed that Obama refused to identify Hamas’ use of human shields as a war crime — surely he would consider it a crime if a bank robber used a hostage to try to get past a police cordon — misses the basic point. Obama is clearly a supporter of Hamas. He is so in word and deed. In that context, Obama’s “irresponsible” comment was his way of deflecting the criticism of his team.

Julius Caesar was a narcissist…but he was highly intelligent and accomplished.

Obama lacks the capacity to understand fundamentally the nature of those he would rule and has little intellectual ability to understand the role of history.

Obama cannot see history at depth…he only sees a skewed and shallow stream of events that he fits into his personal narrative…He is a creature of his schooling

Even Lenin studied history at depth…which is why he was successful in manipulating and terrorizing those he would rule

Obama takes tyrannical measures…but he is feckless and lacks an overall strategy…he is reactionary.

Obama doesn’t have a grand vision beyond indulging himself and his political party….He is a tool and this becomes more obvious to citizens and the world at large.

Even Caesar had a profound respect for the legacy and potential of Rome…and especially it’s military.

Obama lacks even a fundamental respect for his nation and is driven by alienation from it most likely he is a slave to his schooling

A sign of maturity is when the adult breaks free of his schooling…to school themselves throughout a lifetime…not to continue in life as it’s creature…

The unexamined life is not worth living – Socrates according to Plato.

surely he would consider it a crime if a bank robber used a hostage to try to get past a police cordon — misses the basic point.

Zumkopf on August 7, 2014 at 9:36 AM

You give him too much credit. Maybe the bank robber had a legitimate reason to do that. Besides, it wouldn’t be the robbers fault. You see, somewhere along the line, he had a teacher or someone who inspired him to do it.

If you were told in a vacuum with no other information that Hamas is “irresponsible” but the GOP is “Hatin” which group would you conclude is worse?

Sadly, I think that reflects the actual relative valuation by the progressive left. Similarly, the left screams about Israel’s “war crimes” that left 1900 Palestinians dead while they were stopping rocket and terror tunnel attacks; but when ISIS drives 40,000 members of a religous minority out of their homes not because they did anything but rather because ISIS says they are “Devil Worshippers” and pins them up on a mountain with no water where they will die of thirst, you hear nothing from the left. The value system of the leaders of the progressive left is far removed from those of our Founding Fathers.

I think there’s more to it than that, though – – – if he does it (and I think he will), the Hispanic block won’t talk about “What Democrats did for us,” they’ll talk about “What Barack did for us.”

That’s what drives the man.

BD57 on August 7, 2014 at 9:22 AM

This is what he hopes…But it is a fools errand.

It is also a cynical calculation that is shallow.

Allegiance is won through respect…and nobody with an ounce of working gray matter either trusts or respects Obama…they indulge his ego to gain their favors.

Creating a permanent cheap labor underclass in antithetical to the American psyche and our foundational laws…It is a european tactic of imperialism…

This single issue has the capacity to unite the citizenry because it is foreign to everything American.

Come on….it’s not like the topic of discussion was those damned constitutional conservative teabaggers or something…. THAT would have gotten his hackles up.

Every new day is one less day to the end of Obama’s reign of error.

albill on August 7, 2014 at 9:53 AM

Israel is in an existential war.

Obama doesn’t understand the nature of that.

When the conflict in the Ukraine becomes existential for Russia…we will all be in deep trouble.

imho

Akin to FDR on the discovery of Buchenwald and Dachau saying, “The Narzis have acted extraordinarily irresponsibly”

So, Hamas terrorists are frat boys? They must have some wild initiation rituals.

extraordinarily irresponsibly

A new euphemism for WAR CRIMES – if only President Precious had the ‘spine’ to tell those he is protecting that what they are doing is wrong.
Thank God for Bibi, and that Israel has a strong leader when she needs it – now it’s our turn to correct a mistake.

I believe it was Greta that said she felt that he had checked out already, was just going through the motions, and I agree with that. I watched that presser…he was, as Charles said, lethargic and seemingly disinterested in the topics he still managed to ramble on and on about.

changer1701 on August 7, 2014 at 11:36 AM

I was bemused when Fournier prefaced his remarks about how bad the unscripted Obama is on his feet with the observation that he writes beautiful prose. Presumably he was talking about the two (!) autobiographies. Does he not know that the authorship of those books is seriously in question?

35tww on August 7, 2014 at 12:48 PM

“It is important to remember,” Obama explained helpfully, “that Hamas acts extraordinarily irresponsibly when it is deliberately siting rocket launchers in population centers.”

In one swell foop he:

a) tacitly recognizes Hamas as a legitimate political entity which has an inherent “responsibility” to the people of Gaza
b) characterizes the deliberate placing of military installations in civilian areas as nothing more than an ill-advised action that can be corrected by pointing out that “folks” could get hurt.

I wish recent articles to the effect that President Zero has checked out and left no forwarding address were more true than they are…

jbspry on August 7, 2014 at 1:09 PM

Most of Obama’s pressers are an exercise in extraordinary irresponsibility anyway, but this takes the cake.

Well, Ed…I was one of the folks who thought you never should have ended your daily “Obamateurism” posts. Perhaps, it’s time to bring them back in earnest.

I DISAGREE: I think both Hispanics and Blacks will ultimately talk about “What Barack did to us”!

Obama’s actions actually de-legitimize the groups he purports to help by making it seem like they are incapable of gains without massive cheating, fraud, and corruption.
