U.S. begins Iraq airlift operation, but Pentagon denies it’s doing anything else

posted at 8:41 pm on August 7, 2014 by Noah Rothman

On Thursday evening, the United States began an airlift operation aimed at providing relief to a group of approximately 40,000 Yazidis, a minority Kurdish religious group trapped on a remote mountain. The group of Yazidis is surrounded by ISIS fighters, and the members of the surrounded minority group have reportedly been succumbing to thirst.

“The United States is sending cargo planes to drop pallets of humanitarian aid and supplies to stranded Iraqi citizens threatened by the militant Islamic group ISIS, according to U.S. officials,” ABC News reporter Martha Raddatz reveled. NBC and CNN reporters have confirmed that a humanitarian airlift is underway.

The move was prompted by an increasing international awareness to the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Kurdistan resulting from ISIS’s unchecked advance. A heartbreaking video featuring one Yazidis woman pleading for the world to intervene in order to save her people from extermination went viral this week:

Kurdish television reported earlier on Thursday that air raids on ISIS positions were ongoing and attributed the attacks to the United States, but the Pentagon denied that any airstrikes have taken place. Turkey, which is familiar with the area, has also denied that it conducted airstrikes in Iraq.

Nevertheless, The New York Times reports that Kurdish officials believe that two targets in northern Iraq were struck on Thursday night from the air. CNN has reported that Kurdish sources believe the Iraqi air force may be responsible for the strikes, but earlier reports indicated that the Iraqi air force is not capable of carrying out sophisticated attacks on ground-based targets.

Fighter planes regularly accompany humanitarian airlift operations, and it is possible that American airstrikes accompanying an airlift operation occurred. As is often the case with preliminary reports emanating from a warzone, confusion reigns.

Unless you have boots on the ground to manage and protect the weaponry, it could fall into the hands of and thus ultimately help the terrorists.

Too bad the Appeaser in Chief decided to exit without keeping a few thousand troops and a few air bases on hand just for this kind of problem. Actually, had he done so, those people would not have had to flee to the mountains to begin with, and ISIS would’ve been stopped in Iraq long ago.

Well said, TXUS. Had Obama kept the promise the he made to Iraq to leave it “sovereign, stable, and self-reliant” rather than on the brink of civil war, with a military that lacked cohesion and a strong chain of command with tried and true officers, this would never have come to this and the people of Iraq would be enjoying the fruits of the democracy they were promised.

If we could manage to give them some support they are willing to get those people off that mountain and take them in but they can’t very well shepherd unarmed civilians through a war zone successfully without some serious support.

Didn’t Iran just give them a bunch of SU-25s? If that’s the case I don’t know why they wouldn’t be capable of dropping a few bombs.

Otherwise, if the transports were escorted by fighters and some artillery landed under where they were flying maybe somebody thought it was bombs dropped by the aircraft.

I’d think that laying down some consistent air support would go a long way toward helping them get that pathway established and defend it.

Establishing and defending that pathway is going to take them away from other operations, too, like defending territory not already fallen and defending that 900 mile stretch of border the Kurds are maintaining.

They’re stretched pretty thin already and they’ve been fighting until they’re exhausted as it is.

Yeah, but flying ground-strike missions is a frangible skill: if they’re not putting in the hours practicing it, they’re just gonna be skeets for any a-hole with a SAM…and remember next to RPG’s, MANPAD systems (SA-7 & 14 mostly) are in pretty good supply there.

The Su-25 (Frogfoot) is a rough (understatement) to the A-10: Armored enough, but a few hit or enough shrapnel in the air with do the trick.

PLUS you really want under-skilled pilots with really LARGE bombs flying “precision” air-strikes? Might wind up killing more of the people they’re trying to save than the SOB’s at the bottom of the mountain.

The Su-25 (Frogfoot) is a rough (understatement) to the A-10…

BlaxPac on August 7, 2014 at 9:41 PM

The latest models are a very good ground attack aircraft. Closer to the loser in the A-10 competition, the A-9. But by no means second class in the ground attack business.

IIRC, the only reason the A-10 won the competition was ease of maintenance. A big beast with podded engines will be that way.

Another possibility is that it’s the IDF that’s doing the job (Breitbart) :

COULD ISRAEL BE BOMBING ISLAMIC STATE TO SAVE KURDS ? -> http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Peace/2014/08/07/Israel-May-Be-Bombing-Islamic-State-to-Save-Kurds

If they are it’s with the backing of the Saudis.

The Saudis have just given $1 Billion to the Lebanese military to fight jihadists in Lebanon.

OT…Now Fox is reporting that 2 rockets launched from Gaza into Israel.

Did he even look into the camera? He looked disgusted and like he had a plane to catch.

can_con on August 7, 2014 at 9:42 PM

You might think that he has handlers that can tell him how creepy it is to be addressed by a president that will not look into the camera.

slickwillie2001 on August 7, 2014 at 9:48 PM

He couldn’t even look directly into the camera as he said “my fellow Americans”.

To ISIS, so are we.

thatsafactjack on August 7, 2014 at 9:43 PM

We are infidels…We are not apostates to jihadists.

Same brutal bestial treatment by jihadists in any case.

Heaven forbid if AF1 left without him…he might actualy have to…

…have to

…have to STAY and LEAD a actual crisis!

/vapors

* – not exactly sarcasm…cuz the thought of him and his ‘team’ doing anything even remotely looking like leadership with our people and innocents on the ground over there gives me the creeps.

US Moves Baghdad Embassy Personnel to Erbil

Along with two separate contingents of those embassy personnel, military advisers and some other personnel have been stationed at Erbil in recent weeks as it was considered one of the safest places in Iraq. This is likely why Obama has said he will authorize air strikes to protect personnel at Erbil.

thatsafactjack on August 7, 2014 at 9:49 PM

I bet the libs are going fvcking bananas over his announcement, even better news for November.

TXUS on August 7, 2014 at 9:49 PM

After saying nothing could be done, then doing the least possible he could do.

Oh yeah, the idiot trolls are at a loss.

Be ready for more of this while they flail for something to make the hurt be less come November.

Creepy is the right word. Will the media call him out on it is the question?

Yah, scratch that.

True, but are these current export models or direct Red Army Surplus?…and when I say “surplus” I mean “Sold by some broke Red AF General trying to raise enough hard currency to open a Starbucks franchise.”

Earlier up thread someone mentioned that these -25s might be from Iranian stores, which might also mean they’re “only” 20 years old (give or take)….I’ll have to dig into my Janes & Wiki library to double-check.

BTW, a big TY to those that sat and watched the “Press Feeding..err Conference”…I’ve gotten to the point right now, I don’t have patience to hear the guy’s voice…
