U.S. begins Iraq airlift operation, but Pentagon denies it’s doing anything else

posted at 8:41 pm on August 7, 2014 by Noah Rothman

On Thursday evening, the United States began an airlift operation aimed at providing relief to a group of approximately 40,000 Yazidis, a minority Kurdish religious group trapped on a remote mountain. The group of Yazidis is surrounded by ISIS fighters, and the members of the surrounded minority group have reportedly been succumbing to thirst.

“The United States is sending cargo planes to drop pallets of humanitarian aid and supplies to stranded Iraqi citizens threatened by the militant Islamic group ISIS, according to U.S. officials,” ABC News reporter Martha Raddatz reveled. NBC and CNN reporters have confirmed that a humanitarian airlift is underway.

The move was prompted by an increasing international awareness to the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Kurdistan resulting from ISIS’s unchecked advance. A heartbreaking video featuring one Yazidis woman pleading for the world to intervene in order to save her people from extermination went viral this week:

Kurdish television reported earlier on Thursday that air raids on ISIS positions were ongoing and attributed the attacks to the United States, but the Pentagon denied that any airstrikes have taken place. Turkey, which is familiar with the area, has also denied that it conducted airstrikes in Iraq.

Nevertheless, The New York Times reports that Kurdish officials believe that two targets in northern Iraq were struck on Thursday night from the air. CNN has reported that Kurdish sources believe the Iraqi air force may be responsible for the strikes, but earlier reports indicated that the Iraqi air force is not capable of carrying out sophisticated attacks on ground-based targets.

Fighter planes regularly accompany humanitarian airlift operations, and it is possible that American airstrikes accompanying an airlift operation occurred. As is often the case with preliminary reports emanating from a warzone, confusion reigns.

It doesn’t really matter, because I doubt these are the planes taking part. If they are, it will be Russian planes with Russian pilots…the good stuff.

As has been shown in the Ukraine, an SU-25 without support doesn’t fare well around SAM’s.

…have to STAY and LEAD a actual crisis!

nooooooooooo….anything he “leads” end up FUBAR, so let him stay on Marthas’ Vineyard and play golf.

Today is the start of Obamas’ war in Iraq.

He owns this.

When Obama said he’s resisted those who’ve wanted military force to solve problems in the last few years (straw man, he’s overstating their desire to fight wars), then when he followed it up by saying the military isn’t the only tool in our arsenal, there’s also … DIPLOMACY, I had to laugh out loud.

I almost fell out of my chair when he said “fellow Americans” and talked about how the US does good in the world. I bet he choked on the words so he could barely get them out of his mouth.

When the Yazidis heard that Obama was doing something, they incredulously asked “is there anyone else who can help us?”

Can the Yazidi lady MP be the new Prime Minister of Iraq? That is a way to break the stalemate.

Not that I saw.

Carona79 (I think it was) probably should have put the Caronas away after one. He was pretty weird during the 2012 primaries. I only noticed him again recently.

Lots of new handles recently. Kind of hard to keep track of them all.

Redshirtguy and jaxisaneurophysicist need to have an eye kept on them.

From what I can find, Cozmo, it seems like the Iraqi AF have a limited amount of the -25′s…no firm count, but probably less than 12 total.

Take away the trainers, Hangar Queens and Capitol Defense, they may not have more than 4-6 capable to fly…then add dedicated capable pilots & ordnance, and that number may even be half of that.

They DO have attack choppers & more than a few troop carriers, so they could, in theory, launch a AirMobile Op to the general area, stage and then at very least get a few licks in…but damn, they’re still kinda green as hell to pull off a maneuver that calls for that kind of coordination.

We have the weaponry to effectively neutralize ISIS in a matter of hours, and that does not include nukes.

We what don’t have is the political will to do it. Remember the Highway of Death out of Baghdad? Imagine that occurring all at once, without low risk to US personnel.

Its called the Sensor Fuzed Weapon. And it is devastating. Thats a long video, but its worth it.

The time to use SU-25′s, Hinds and air mobility was weeks ago when ISIS was in the open desert moving fast with open flanks.

Heck, if 0bama had juevos, the boys in blue could have had a second “road to Basra”.

Obama said in his appearance in the White House that the U.S. Military would provide humanitarian aid to the tens of thousands stranded and isolated on a mountain without food, water or shelter. MRE’s on the house he was heard to exclaim. He also declared that U.S. airpower would be used “IF” ISIS did this, or
“IF” ISIS did that. A red line to be sure. ISIS sent their thanks to Obama for clearly stating that he intended to do nothing.

And yet ANOTHER reason I can’t stand M.Y. either…smells too much like Kennedys, Clintons & Kerrys.

Not to mention, blocking traffic for EVERYONE…as if getting on and off the Cape isn’t a damn hassle ENOUGH.

LOL…thank you for the vote, but like I said, it’ll never happen…

Why not?

Because on Day #1, at 9am, I would order the DoD to change the name back to Department of War, instead of that wimpy ass Dept of Defense.

War is our business
, and if we’re gonna be IN business, then get the damn name right.

Insiders say that Obama will order massive air strikes and even several army divisions into action if ISIS invades northern Mexico and tries to shut off the flow of Mexican and Central American future democrat voters into America.

Preach on, Brother.

The problem with playing Catch-Up is: You never really do.

With a few Heavy & precision bombers and ordnance we have (left) it would have been a attack pilots wet dream to be churning the sand on their road march…I mean, we could have turned a good portion of them and the land around it into GLASS (conventionally, of course) and best of all?

No one would have given a good damn that we did it.

BlaxPac on August 7, 2014 at 10:24 PM

BobMbx on August 7, 2014 at 10:22 PM

Well, whatever. I have always called it the road to Basra, because that is what it was/is called.

And the road to Basra is where the attack took place.

cozmo on August 7, 2014 at 10:28 PM

Got to love the BUFF’s…nothing say “God is Angry at your ass” like a few of those puppies with a full load-out.

Like I said, send them out as a serious Live-Fire exercise…give them the maps, load them up with every last CBU’s we have in inventory that may be near it’s expiration date or older: just so we can make a fresh batch for later on.

And just to show we care, mix a couple FAE in there also…JUST because we care so much.

Start the sorties…lather rinse repeat…it may take 2 weeks of hot cycling the planes in and out…but at least you can’t say we don’t give our guys enough training!

BlaxPac on August 7, 2014 at 10:47 PM

BlaxPac on August 7, 2014 at 10:47 PM

Since ISIS isn’t loaded up on armor, I prefer the FAE’s.

Give Hollywood some advance notice. They will take the risk to get good shots of dozens of those things going off.

cozmo on August 7, 2014 at 10:49 PM

Does this mean that we’re allied with Iran & Syria this week?

Humanitarian Aid is just the beginning. Soon ISIS will feel the power of a Strongly Worded Statement when Jen Psaki goes all hashtag on their ass.

Back to the links.

Basic BBQ 101:

Meat always cooks faster and better when its been cut up some.

As for the Hollyweird set, maybe the ’52 could “accidently” make a late deposit on a few Libtard houses?

Especially anyone that authorized “Starship Troopers”, “Battlefield Earth”, “Sex and The City (TV AND Movie)”….

…On second though, if we did that for every crappy film and TV spot, Hollywood would look like the lunar surface.

Oh well, sucks to be them…LOL

BlaxPac on August 7, 2014 at 11:06 PM

I know that when people think of air strikes they think of fighters, bombers, and attack planes, but you shouldn’t forget about helicopter gunships.

The Iraqis have been using Mi-35 Hind gunships for sometime now. They are pretty effective weapons, and could cause a lot of havoc if they can get them far enough north.
