Reince Priebus calls out Mo Brooks’ ‘idiotic’ #WarOnWhites

posted at 2:01 pm on August 7, 2014 by Noah Rothman

One of the more reprehensible features of modern political life is how liberal pundits, egged on by administration officials in many cases, have sought to inflame racial tensions in order to achieve some fleeting political end. It is an appalling irony that the country’s first African-American president and those loyal to him have, with only rare exceptions, thought nothing of acting in ways which harm race relations so as to bolster their own political prospects. History will not look kindly on this administration’s record of advancing racial comity.

That is not to say that Republicans do not have empirical problems appealing to minorities, and some of those problems are of their own making. There is no question, for example, that African-Americans justifiably revere the outmoded and flawed Voting Rights Act of 1964. The Supreme Court did the right thing in 2013 by invalidating the VRA’s Section 5, which shortsightedly enshrined into biding law for all time the racial realities of the 1960s. Times and people change, and the GOP was right to celebrate that victory for federalism. But the Republican Party missed an opportunity by not welcoming, much less spearheading, reforms to the weakened VRA. A smart approach to that issue may have won the GOP some goodwill with a minority group that is, at the moment, reflexively opposed to Republican policy prescriptions.

Republican strategists believe they are facing what many fear is a similar predicament brewing among Hispanic voters. While two general elections do not make for a trend, and I remain unconvinced that President Barack Obama’s electoral coalition is now the Democratic coalition, the drop off of Latino support for Republican presidential candidates from 2000 to 2012 has properly terrified the GOP. To address what they view as a political crisis, the Republican National Committee commissioned a report in 2013 (dubbed the GOP’s “autopsy” report), which proposed some ways to address that potentially lethal predicament:

If Hispanic Americans perceive that a GOP nominee or candidate does not want them in the United States (i.e., self-deportation), they will not pay attention to our next sentence. It does not matter what we say about education, jobs, or the economy; if Hispanics think we do not want them here, they will close their ears to our policies.

Notice that passage says nothing about immigration reform, though embracing reform was among this report’s political recommendations. There is, in fact, some pretty compelling political analysis which suggests Republican support for reforming the immigration system with the only aim being to amnetize illegal residents does not yield much in the way of goodwill from Hispanic voters. This passage has much more to do with tone; how the GOP talks about minority groups about their interests, their concerns, and their cultures.

In an interview with Huntsville, Alabama-based radio host Dale Jackson recently, National Journal’s Editorial Director Ron Fournier read the above passage to Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) during a debate about minority outreach.

Below is Fournier’s account of what followed:

Brooks replied, “By golly, we should not be dividing people as you just have in your commentary by race, by nationality, rather we should talk about …”

I interrupted. “That was not my quote. That was your party’s quote. That’s the RNC …”

Brooks cut me off. “I don’t care that you made the statement or somebody else made the statement that triggered my remarks, but that statement—that argument—is playing hand in glove with the Democratic race-baiting strategy, and it has to come to a stop.”

Brooks would have been wise to stop there. “The Democratic race-baiting strategy” does have to stop. But the Alabama congressman latched onto a theme – that Americans of European heritage are among the last groups which the elite political and media class believes can, and maybe even should, be discriminated against. He decided this phenomenon represents a “War on Whites,” and went on to make it a mantra.

“This is a part of the war on whites that’s being launched by the Democratic Party,” Brooks went on to tell radio host Laura Ingraham. “And the way in which they’re launching this war is by claiming that whites hate everybody else. It’s a part of the strategy that Barack Obama implemented in 2008, continued in 2012, where he divides us all on race, on sex, greed, envy, class warfare, all those kinds of things.”

There is a right way to talk about the poisonous racial dynamic which the Democrats have cynically used to secure their advantage among minority voters, and there is a wrong way. Brooks’ strategy invites media scorn and derision, it closes minorities off to the GOP’s message, and it is self-evidently counterproductive.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus was asked if he agreed that “there is a war on whites out there.” He did not, and went so far as to call Brooks’ claim a “pretty idiotic thing to say.”

“At the end of the day, we have to be a party that grows,” Priebus said. “And that means we have to have more people in our party, not less.”

Priebus noted that it is unfair to judge a party based on the statements of one of its members. That is a game that the press plays relentlessly, and it is a standard that is never applied to Democrats. But Priebus understands that he has his work cut out for him in the effort to appeal to a broader electorate over the heads of Democrats and the media elite. In that effort, Brooks did Priebus and the GOP no favors.

When asked if the Romney campaign did enough to reach out to minority communities in 2012, Priebus noted that “they could have done more.” He added, however, that attempting to appeal to minority groups in the midst of a presidential campaign is already two years too late.

He’s right. There is a productive way for the Republican Party to perform minority outreach, grow the base, and win elections. Reaching out to white, working-class voters disaffected in the Obama-era and rapidly abandoning the Democratic Party must be part of a winning Republican strategy, but alienating minorities along the way does not help the party.

Brooks apparently knows he went too far. “Sometimes you have to use hyperbole in order to force a discussion on much more serious and fact-oriented perspectives associated with that hyperbole,” he told Huntsville News. But you haven’t heard that quote. Why? It only softens Brooks’ inflammatory comments and clarifies his thinking, which is precisely what the forces arrayed against the GOP’s minority outreach mission do not want.

Brooks did his party no service this week, and now it is left to the GOP’s committee brass to clean up his mess.

This article has been updated to note Ron Fournier is National Journal’s editorial director.

There is and has been such a war for most of my life, but there is no profit to be had by talking about it. It comes off like the president whining about how hard presidenting is. Being on top is hard, but nobody feels sorry for you, and if you want to stay there, you shouldn’t feel sorry for yourself. Whites still have most of the power and the money in the US. The fact of it makes us a target, as surely as day follows night. The proper response is to man up and deal with it, rather than whine.

I am STARTING to see some GOP outreach but in the end it is up to us as individuals, I think, to do most of the work. The problem is that these minority communities in general are not watching Fox News, they aren’t reading Hot Air, they aren’t listening to Rush Limbaugh. We have to stop preaching to the choir. Evangelizing to the converted is simply telling people what they want to hear.

There is a lot we can do. We can point out that urban programs such as housing subsidies and generous welfare programs simply act to nail large populations of poor people to places that have no jobs for them. If you look at the places in a state such as California where there are jobs for people, they tend to be skilled jobs. Now look back at the areas where there are large poor minority populations and you see the worst schools in the state. There ARE jobs out there but the poor and minorities are not being prepared to take them. While these programs might each one individually have been implemented to help people, when taken in their total, the complete impact of them in depressed areas, they act to lock people in to a multi-generational cycle of poverty. This is NOT helping people.

Does a state have pockets of low unemployment and pockets of high unemployment? What can the leaders of those areas do to match up business that needs workers with areas who have people who need jobs? How do we end the cycle of poor education in economically depressed areas? The Democrats really are not interested in breaking this cycle because it locks in a large dependent population of votes. We must expose the Democrats as not really being interested in helping people become self-sufficient, they are interested in USING those people to lock in as many votes as possible.

The Republican candidate for governor in California recently spent a week on the streets of Fresno and filmed a documentary. He went for a week in 100 degree heat with only one shower. He went door to door looking for work. People have no idea how depressed the central valley of California is. If the initiative to break California up into 6 states were successful, the state of Central California would be the poorest in the nation — poorer than Mississippi.

And we have to do this from the bottom up, not from top down. We need to elect Republicans into our city councils and county governments and start implementing policies that begin to attack the roots of the problem.

But most of all, we need to get the message out via channels that the people in those communities are going to hear. Tweeting to Albanians with a #TCOT hashtag isn’t going to do it.

It starts with recognizing that the way we as a nation and as states have been trying to address these problems isn’t working. Simply throwing money at the problem doesn’t solve it, it just makes the problem easier to live with. The next step comes with asking people in those situations what they see as their barriers and then together working to come up with solutions. But we have to show that we are the ones who really care. We are the ones who want to help them get what they need to help themselves and not depend on programs to get by.

RNC Refuses to Censure Henry Barbour
By Jeffrey Lord

Yesterday the Republican National Committee, meeting in Chicago for its summer gathering, refused even to hear two resolutions dealing with the censure of Mississippi Republican National Committeeman Henry Barbour. Barbour has admitted to playing a role (as reported here by NRO’s Eliana Johnson) in funding a controversial ad that has been widely criticized for its racial content. Johnson reported that Barbour was “not distancing himself from the inflammatory ads.”

The resolutions were being pushed by Missouri Republican State Chairman Ed Martin.

Today the RNC is having a members-only breakfast in which a discussion of the issue is supposed to be held.

Additionally, I have been contacted by the Missouri State GOP Executive Director with regard to an earlier column in which, as per a source to me, an RNC staffer had inquired as to the election schedule for Missouri State chair. My source saw this as being in the way of a “shot across the bow” of Martin from Chairman Priebus and the RNC leadership. The ED has told me this was not so and that he not only did not speak to the RNC staffer mentioned — Matt Pinnell, the party’s State Party Director — but did not see anything out of the ordinary. I have checked back with my source, who is sticking to the story.

But in fact no matter who made that contact or how it played out — as a routine inquiry or a shot across the bow — the central issue at hand is the RNC’s handling of the race issue.

The fact that the RNC, as now known from yesterday, refused even to hear two serious resolutions on Barbour’s conduct is scandalous.

These are the people running the Party of Lincoln? Oh my. There’s more coming and I will keep readers posted as the details come in.

An oldie, but goodie from the year 2000:

Ira Glass Act Three, Notes of a Native Daughter. Janet McDonald had already learned the language. She had already learned the culture, had French friends, and a French apartment, when something happened that made her realize how much she hadn’t figured out.

Janet Mcdonald
I was going to the movies with a friend of mine from Yale who is black also. And there was a long line. And we were like, let’s jump the line. These white people, they’re going to be scared of us. We’ll just go and jump the line. We’ll get to the front of the line. So, of course, you know, we walked up to the front of the line, like, yeah, you want to try me? I’m black. That usually works in New York.

These people were ready to rip our hair out. And they were white. I couldn’t believe it. And they were like, in French, what are you doing? The line starts back there. You can’t just walk to the front of the line. They were, like, ready to kick our butts. I was shocked. I’m like, these are white people, and they’re not scared of us?

That’s when I realized I wasn’t in Kansas anymore. And I liked it. I mean, of course, it was kind of humiliating, because you know, we’re supposed to be the intimidating, scary ones. And then all these French bitches in high heels were threatening us. And they were in our faces. And it made me realize that the whole black-white game just doesn’t work outside of the United States.

Because white people aren’t afraid of you here. And at the same time, they don’t hate you, because that sort of goes together. So I’ll take it. I’ll wait on line. Now I don’t dare jump lines. So that opened my eyes.

First, if you buy into the “war on whites,” you have to buy into the “amalgamated class” theory. So, you’re either contradicting yourself or you agree with me that there is no war on whites. “Common ground,” as my old boss Jesse Jackson used to say.

It’s amazing how, as soon as racial awareness started to work against them, so many white people went all colorblind. We spent 300 years building a segregated nation and you won’t spend 50 to try to fix it — and you resent anyone who points out the reality that the racism that remains and the hideous effects of centuries of violent institutionalization of racism have to be attacked, because you’re afraid some black guy is going to get hold of whatever sliver of the pie your corporate masters allowed you to keep while they were getting rich.

Yes, the Jesse Jackson. But only briefly.

To the extent that people of color have gained enough power and awareness to crack open all-white bastions of wealth and privilege and now track progress in creating more equitable opportunities and access , thus depriving white people of what had been an unfair advantage, racial awareness is working against white people. It’s also moving America closer to its ideals.

Richard Alatorre, Los Angeles City Council. “They’re afraid we’re going to take over the governmental institutions and other institutions. They’re right. We will take them over … We are here to stay.”
Excelsior, the national newspaper of Mexico, “The American southwest seems to be slowly returning to the jurisdiction of Mexico without firing a single shot.”
Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, University of Texas and La Raza founder; “We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population … I love it. They are shitting in their pants with fear. I love it.”
Art Torres, Chairman of the California Democratic Party, “Remember 187 — proposition to deny taxpayer funds for services to non-citizens — was the last gasp of white America in California.”
Gloria Molina, Los Angeles County Supervisor, “We are politicizing every single one of these new citizens that are becoming citizens of this country … I gotta tell you that a lot of people are saying, “I’m going to go out there and vote because I want to pay them back.”
Mario Obledo, California Coalition of Hispanic Organizations and California State Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Governor Jerry Brown, also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton, “California is going to be a Hispanic state. Anyone who doesn’t like it should leave.”
Jose Pescador Osuna, Mexican Consul General , “We are practicing ‘La Reconquista’ in California.”
Professor Fernando Guerra, Loyola Marymount University; “We need to avoid a white backlash by using codes understood by Latinos …”
THE U.S. VS MEXICO:
On February 15, 1998, the U.S. and Mexican soccer teams met at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The crowd was overwhelmingly pro-Mexican even though most lived in this country. They booed during the National Anthem and U.S. flags were held upside down. As the match progressed, supporters of the U.S. team were insulted, pelted with projectiles, punched and spat upon. Beer and trash were thrown at the U.S. players before and after the match. The coach of the US soccer team said, “this is the most painful experience I have had in this profession.”

Well your masters do. You know democrat Luis Gutierrez claims that if you don’t support open borders and no strings attached amnesty it’s because republicans despise and hate “our” children. Interesting choice of words. It’s almost as if he is demonizing and otherizing all those white folks in the republican party. Not to mention similar comments from pretty much every other democrat member of congress including Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. We can’t have an honest discussion about immigration, healthcare, wealth in this country or any other issue because the democrat party frames any opposition to their viewpoints as racist. The democrats agenda/political strategy is to motivate minorities in the false claim that white republicans hate them. And that’s what Brooks was talking about.

Although the movement against liberalized immigration policy is shot through with racism (“they’re lazy and only here for welfare,” “they’re all violent criminals or welfare cheats,”

More Mo Brooks racial wisdom: GOP outreach to Hispanics is “race-baiting”

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) said during a radio interview on Wednesday that his party’s efforts to court Hispanic voters amount to “race-baiting.”

Fournier appeared with Brooks on Dale Jackson’s radio show Wednesday and read the GOP congressman a passage about targeting Hispanic voters, which came from the Republican National Committee’s Growth and Opportunity Book 2013.
“If Hispanic Americans hear that the GOP doesn’t want them in the United States, they won’t pay attention to our next sentence. It doesn’t matter what we say about education, jobs or the economy; if Hispanics think that we do not want them here, they will close their ears to our policies,” Fournier quoted from the report.

The report also suggests that the GOP should target “Asian and Pacific Islanders, African Americans, Indian Americans, Native Americans, women, and youth.”

So all Fournier did was read passages from the GOP’s so-called “autopsy” report that had the blatant message; “either we attract folks other than aging white guys or we are fucked.” (A message that the party has completely ignored.) And like his fellow House GOPers, Brooks would have none of that “be nice to other races” nonsense!

Brooks — who seemed momentarily confused that the passage was from a GOP document — said Americans shouldn’t be divided by race, as such a strategy would be “race-baiting.”
“I don’t care that you made the statement or somebody else made the statement that triggered my remarks, but that statement, that argument, is playing hand in glove with the Democratic race-baiting strategy, and it has to come to a stop,” he said.

And he wasn’t done yet. No, it’s pretty clear this clown doesn’t ever know when to stop.

Later in the interview, Brooks said that Republicans were not guilty of dividing the country because they had not made any attempt to appeal to Hispanic voters based on race.
“I don’t know that the Republican Party has ever appealed to Hispanic Americans based on race,” Brooks said. “Name a candidate, in the United States of America, who appeals to Hispanics based on their skin color.”

Fournier responded, “It’s hard to name one who’s not,” citing former President George W. Bush as a GOP candidate who appealed directly to Hispanic voters.

2.) The GOP is the party of old white men

3.) White privilege is a problem / whites need to “check” their privilege

4.) People of color = everyone who’s not white

5.) The overwhelming disparities in terms of what is socially or lawfully acceptable (e.g. United Negro College fund has no comparable white version, same for NAACP and other groups)

6.) The fact that affirmative action exists, which benefits non-whites exclusively. Same for Federal contracts and grants to minority-owned businesses
