Kurdish TV: U.S. bombs ISIS targets in Iraq; Update: Airdrops to stranded Yazidis begin

posted at 5:21 pm on August 7, 2014 by Allahpundit

True or false? The Times thinks it’s solid enough to relay the news:

American military forces bombed at least two targets in northern Iraq on Thursday night to rout Islamist insurgents who have trapped tens of thousands of religious minorities in Kurdish areas, Kurdish officials said.

Word of the bombings, reported on Kurdish television from the city of Erbil, came as President Obama was preparing to make a statement in Washington.

Kurdish officials said the bombings targeted fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria who had seized two towns, Gwer and Mahmour.

The Pentagon says it’s nonsense:

Okay, but (a) administration sources told the Times earlier that the White House was considering airstrikes, (b) the Kurds were reportedly reaching out to Turkey for airstrikes too, and (c) the Pentagon might have good reason to deny this even if it’s true, namely, if other operations against ISIS are in motion. Kurdish TV may have tipped off the enemy before it was supposed to.

Let’s get a thread up now, as events are moving fast. Updates to come.

Update: How dire is the situation in Kurdistan?

Kurdish fighters scrambled to set up a defensive line Thursday after militants from the Islamic State seized four strategic towns on a key highway and advanced to positions just minutes from Irbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region

[Kurdish military commander Rosg Nuri] Shawess, who also is a member of the Iraqi government’s national security council, called the situation “extremely critical” as he examined the foremost strong point along the highway. He described the Kurdish military plight as “too much distance to protect, with too few men and not enough weapons.”

“The Americans keep saying they will help us,” he added as surveillance planes or drones, likely American, circled far above the clouds. “Well, if they plan to help they had better do it now.”

The Yazidis starving on Mount Sinjar is bad, ISIS seizing the Mosul Dam is worse, and ISIS overrunning the one solid ally America has in the region is probably worst of all. Maybe the threat to Irbil finally convinced Obama to act. I’m honestly shocked that the jihadis could have the peshmerga so far back on their heels that the capital of Kurdistan could be under threat, but maybe that’s my own ignorance showing. If the Kurds aren’t going to push ISIS back, though, who is? Turkey? The Saudis?

Update: Here we go.

Update: The Turks are in the air too:

Update: And now the Pentagon’s denying the airdrops too, even though ABC’s source is a U.S. official.

Why deny it if it’s happening? What else is going on that might give the Pentagon a reason to play dumb for awhile?

Update: Are we going to play pretend, like it was the Iraqi air force who did this?

Hope its true?
Nah, Hope it is not the end of it and that Obama has the desire to actually help these people rather than trying to get a couple of easy points before he heads to the links tomorrow.
Obama has a nice long record, and the reality is that US and our allies are almost never helped by his actions. Almost every single time the benefits go to our enemies and our allies enemies.

Even the Pope wants ISIS nuked.

John the Libertarian on August 7, 2014 at 5:49 PM

The Popes have dealt with the existential threat of Islam since the Crusades.

That is a fact in history.

You might not like this particular Pope…but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand the nature of the threat.

“Turkey’s foreign ministry has lodged a formal protest with the Vatican after Pope Francis referred to the mass murder of Armenians as “the first genocide of the 20th century.”

The Pope alluded briefly to the Armenian genocide during a June 3 meeting with Armenian Catholic Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX Tarmouni of Cilicia. Several years earlier, while serving as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, then-Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio described the killing and forced deportation of millions of Armenians as “the gravest crime of Ottoman Turkey against the Armenian people and all of humanity.”

An estimated 1 to 1.5 million Armenians died between 1915 and 1918 in massacres, in concentration camps, and on forced marches. But the government of Turkey has steadfastly denied that a genocidal campaign took place. The Turkish government “expressed disappointment” over the Pope’s remarks, conveying its displeasure to Vatican diplomatic representatives both in Ankara and in Rome….”

http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=18097

Pope Francis’s predecessor Benedict XVI spoke of Islam early in his papacy at Regensburg ( by stating facts in history…and he was condemned for it.

If it’s true that Obama has declined to offer any support to those stranded Iraqis I hope his own people wreck havoc on the Democrats at the polls in November for his failure to act in the face of a humanitarian crisis of his own making.

It it’s true that he’s withheld aid to those people whom he betrayed when he broke this nation’s promise to stay and help them develop their own armed forces so they could defend themselves against just this sort of attack he should he charged and tried.

Pope Calls For International Action In Iraq

Pope Francis appealed to world leaders on Thursday to help end the crisis in northern Iraq after a sweeping advance by radical Islamic state militants forced thousands of residents of Iraq’s biggest Christian town to flee their homes.

“His Holiness addresses an urgent appeal to the international community to take action to end the humanitarian tragedy now underway, to act to protect those affected or threatened by violence and to provide aid, especially for the most urgent needs of the many who have been forced to flee and who depend on the solidarity of others,” the Vatican said in a statement.

Yes. They have 12 Sukhoi-25 “Frogfoot” close air support aircraft that have been delivered in the last month from Iran, Russia and Belarus. They would be perfect to use to send some ISIS militants to meet Satan.
Technically speaking though, they should/could have a couple (literally) of F-16′s and pilots to fly them. Plus they have armed Cessna Caravan’s…..which carry about as many weapons as the original Predator drones.

I hope we are not trying to do humanitarian airdrops and military airstrikes at the same time. I thought we learned that lesson from the opening days in Afghanistan.

Shouldn’t we be considering how effective these strikes were, if in fact they took place? No one nuked ISIS, so a few 500 pounders -while nice and loud and pretty effective in close air support- aren’t going to decimate the ISIS military. So if we carried out air strikes, hiding that fact likely means there’s no long term commitment on our end. That would allow us to claim it was the Iraqis (helping the Kurds?) or just dummy up about the whole thing.

And if we’re not in it to win it… well, that sure sounds like our President.

BKeyser on August 7, 2014 at 6:48 PM

One reason they might want to keep things quite for now is that they may actually be putting some boots on the ground (special forces) to secure the Mosul dam. This of course is wild speculation, but maybe they wanted to secure the dam before committing air strikes and air drops to insure ISIS didn’t flood Mosul and Baghdad once they realized they were being attacked.

If anything organized is happening you can bet Obama didn’t organize it. More likely someone else did it and put a pen in his hand and forced him to sign it.

If anyone is dropping bombs it would be for cover for the supposed air drops.

The good thing is, air support doesn’t need to decimate the ISIS forces. They’re fanatical and better than I was hoping, but whatever airstrikes by whom ever just need to level the playing field. That way the better weapons ISIS has won’t matter as much. Plus they should have little in the way of SAM’s. A perfect environment for A-10′s or SU-25′s.

I love it.

Like little ladies complaining across the back yard fence. You go from thread to thread at the speed of light, complaining that the administration is afraid to do this or that and then as soon as it possibly does this or that, you’re complaining that it won’t do that and this.

And I have two tabs open, one on each Hot Air topic, and flipping back and forth between the tabs is like watching psychotic animation.

“He’s not going to do this, he’s not going to do that. He did this, it should have been done another way. How come he’s not doing it this way?”

I certainly don’t like this administration, nor do I agree with much of anything they do or say, but still, if these subjects weren’t so serious and tragic, I’d be laughing my ass off right now.

Everyone… get a grip.

Anybody know what he’s babbling about?

I’d say the consensus is the the Choom Gang do something substantive, rather than make bland statements. Airstrikes would slow them down, but it won’t stop them.

Wally here likes to laugh at everybody and say there’s no hope.

Of course, he offers nothing.

formwiz on August 7, 2014 at 6:55 PM

Are we going to play pretend, like it was the Iraqi air force who did this?

Apparently we are…like everything else in this administration, the truth is toxic. Obama can’t admit he was wrong to pull out of Iraq, so he’s going to lie and obfuscate about going back in. I guess we should be thankful he’s doing something, but the lie is always the first choice with this scumball.

AUINSC on August 7, 2014 at 6:57 PM

So the lame stream will now paint Obama as a hero for finally doing what even Jimmy Carter would already have done.

And for its part, what is the Vatican doing besides issuing an urgent appeal? Francis has a diplomatic corps, humanitarian funds, aircraft. Why not lead by example?

Happy Nomad on August 7, 2014 at 6:41 PM

Barry has the worlds most powerful military, What is he doing?

1sttofight on August 7, 2014 at 6:44 PM

Posted upthread the vatican has begun releasing emergency funds targeted to crisis regions…started July 25

As for diplomacy…just because we don’t hear about it doesn’t mean anything.

The vatican is probably trying to make arrangements for refugee placement.
