Video: Hamas sets up and fires rockets near hotel, in Gaza residential district

posted at 12:41 pm on August 5, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

NDTV shot this video over the last two days, but didn’t publish it until after their reporters left for … well, the obvious reasons. Note the time of the rocket fire, too — 7:50 am, just ten minutes before the cease-fire began today. Could these have been the missiles that hit the West Bank?

It began with a mysterious tent with a blue canopy that bobbed up yesterday (August 4) at 6:30 am in an open patch of land next to our window. We saw three men making a multitude of journeys in and out of the tent, sometimes with wires.

An hour later, they emerged, dismantled the tent, changed their clothes and walked away.

The next morning – today – we woke to news of the 72-hour ceasefire but just before it was to take effect, the rocket next to our hotel was fired. There was a loud explosion and a whooshing sound. The cloud of smoke that rose was captured by our cameraperson.

This report is being aired on NDTV and published on ndtv.com after our team left the Gaza strip – Hamas has not taken very kindly to any reporting of its rockets being fired. But just as we reported the devastating consequences of Israel’s offensive on Gaza’s civilians, it is equally important to report on how Hamas places those very civilians at risk by firing rockets deep from the heart of civilian zones.

Indeed. This shows a deliberate attempt to bait the IDF into a response to take out the rocket battery, which would necessarily put everyone in the neighborhood at risk. That has been Hamas’ strategy all along, while threatening any reporters in Gaza who might file honest stories about that strategy. It’s a war crime, and it puts the responsibility of any civilian deaths on Hamas rather than the IDF.

This also demonstrates the relative futility of return fire on those rocket positions, though. The ease in which a temporary silo can be built, used, and then abandoned makes it almost impossible to defeat Hamas through reciprocal artillery fire. The only way to end the rocket fire is to devastate Hamas’ ability to re-arm itself and deploy those weapons. That is why a ground war was necessary, even without the tunnels going into Israel, and why the border crossings will have to either remain closed or severely restricted for the foreseeable future.

Since the context was on rockets, I submit the Gaza-Israel tunnels aren’t the ones involved with supplying Hamas with rockets,..I believe the tunnels into Egypt are used for that. It was my impression theGaza- Israel tunnels were being used for Hamas commando raids, not smuggling.

I didn’t write that quite clearly enough. I wasn’t suggesting that those tunnels were the distribution point for the rockets, but that they were by themselves the major casus belli for the ground war. You’re right that the distribution point for the rockets were the tunnels into Egypt, but Egypt is demolishing those now, too.

Blake on August 5, 2014 at 1:30 PM

In the Vietnam war, an interesting practice was to boobytrap caches of VC weapons that were discovered. Not by boobytrapping the entire cache, but, for example, by interspersing the ammo with a few rounds that blew up in their faces when fired, or grenades that detonated immediately on releasing the striker lever.
That would be an interesting, albeit somewhat trickier, tactic to use with some Hamas’ rockets.

We’d still be fighting Japan if we fought them the way Israel is forced to fight Hamas. And, as barbaric as the Japanese army was in WWII, the can’t even hold a candle to Hamas. Wouldn’t the world be better off if Israel just annhilated the entire area, captured or killed everyone remotely related to Hamas, and then bulldozed the place? Put up some nice condos on the beach front and booted out anyone that is left that isn’t an Israeli citizen? I mean, really, could Israel really be condemned by world opinion anymore than it already is? Just have Bibi come out and say, “Hey, we want peace, and if you want it, you can have it if you just stop bombing us and sending terrorists over here. If you can’t do that, then we are going to come over there, exterminate Hamas, and take Gaza back”. At least they wouldn’t have to worry about rockets from Gaza anymore…

NDTV shot this video over the last two days, but didn’t publish it until after their reporters left for … well, the obvious reasons.

Ed’s opening sentence raises another very real point that is being missed / ignored / downplayed…. that unless the journalists in Gaza are entirely willing to be propaganda shills for Hamas, they are in incredible danger from that terrorist regime.

Truth can’t be reported until they leave Gaza – and if they don’t leave, they ain’t reporting the truth.

Cronkite was a Democrat of the old school, not the new school. He turned on the Vietnam War in 1968 or 1969. Everyone by that time knew the war was not for us to win, it was up to the South Vietnamese to win or lose. And, he definitely did not like Nixon. But, then, virtually none of the press liked Nixon.

Athos on August 5, 2014 at 2:10 PM

Cronkite purposely mis-reported the Tet Offensive as a loss.

That was providing aid and comfort to the enemy.

viking01 on August 5, 2014 at 2:10 PM

But just as we reported the devastating consequences of Israel’s offensive on Gaza’s civilians, it is equally important to report on how Hamas places those very civilians at risk by firing rockets deep from the heart of civilian zones.

“Equally important”, huh? I would almost think that it’s more important to point out that Israel wouldn’t pose any risk at all to civilians if Hamas would just stop firing unprovoked rockets from their midst. One’s a cause, the other’s an effect. But what do I know? I don’t have a J-School diploma on my wall to validate my theories of moral-equivalence.

The minute we sign off on this collateral damage is evil nonsense, the enemy is sure to take advantage by firing weapons from schools, orphanages, mosques, shopping centers, hotels, spas, hospitals, old age homes and residential neighborhoods. Collateral damage is bad only (as the Arabs do in Israel)you deliberately target civilian targets. We didn’t worry about collateral damage before and during D-Day when we killed hundreds of innocents (not even the perpetually complaining French complained).

If we wipe out military targets and take civilians along with them because the Arabs deliberately placed them in harm’s way, at first the Chris Mathews of this world will scream “American barbarism”. After a while, however, Arabs (and non-Arab Muslims) will abandon the practice because they will lose support from their own people.

‘Appears’…no link here either

“No reports” of links here

And still no links

“No. Del and you can go read the articles.”…but no link to the articles – or any admission of error.

Only when called repeatedly on it – do you even start to provide a link – citing the pro-Hamas State Department, the anti-Semitic anti-Israeli UN, and ‘Palestinian officials’ which is little more than another word for Hamas officials, all written by international journalists who remain in Gaza – and you ignore the reports that those journalists are threatened if they don’t toe the Hamas line.

Troll, you’re held in contempt because you troll…badly. Because you are a supporter of a terrorist organization that would kill you if you didn’t convert to Islam. Because you can’t critically think. And you can’t advance a cogent and valid argument. You’re mad because you’re called on this by me and others…and you can’t get away from it until you leap into one of your socks.

PS, just for you, Kid:

FRANCE 24 has exclusive footage of a Hamas rocket launching pad that appears to prove the militant group has been firing from areas heavily populated with civilians.

Correspondent Gallagher Fenwick says the site, in Gaza City, is some 50 metres from a hotel where the majority of international media is staying, and just 100 metres from a UN building.

“This type of setup is at the heart of the debate,” says Gallagher. “The Israeli army has repeatedly accused the Palestinian militants of shooting from within densely populated civilian areas and that is precisely the type of setup we have here.”

You’re dismissed now.

Can someone tell me please, when did it become bad to kill civilians during a war? It is very simple to comprehend – the “innocent” civilians voted in Hamas. They are complicate in all deeds perpetrated by their authorized government. They should shoulder the blame as well as the casualties. As ‘billyboy’ stated – ‘Wouldn’t the world be better off if Israel just annihilated the entire area, captured or killed everyone remotely related to Hamas, and then bulldozed the place?’
