ISIS extends control into Lebanon, threatens 500,000 with captured Iraqi dam

posted at 8:41 am on August 4, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Lebanon’s defense minister is accusing fighters with the Islamic State of executing a premeditated attack on Lebanese territory launched from inside Syria in the north. On Sunday, ISIS militants streamed over the Syrian border taking over a number of police outposts, a military barracks, and a small city.

This was not merely an isolated raid. This attack in the north was met with a corresponding assault by an ISIS cell in Tripoli, one of Lebanon’s largest cities. According to a report, masked men on motorcycles attacked soldiers and police in that city in a corresponding assault.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the region-wide insurgency in the Middle East is taking on a more sectarian dimension as the Islamic State, a Sunni militant group, faces resistance from Shiite Islamist fighters like Hezbollah and it’s backer in Iran.

The strikes were also a setback for the Lebanese Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah, which has fought alongside Syrian government forces against Syria’s largely Sunni Muslim rebels. In March, Hezbollah launched a large operation to clear Syrian border towns, justifying the fight as necessary to safeguard Lebanon from extremists, and boasted over its alleged success.

Hezbollah said Sunday it would “stand side-by-side with military institutions” in the fight against militants. But Mr. Moqbel responded in a statement that the army was working alone. Such an alliance could further inflame sectarian tensions that the Syrian war has sparked in Lebanon over the past three years.

And Hezbollah’s involvement in the fight against ISIS is not limited to the Levant. Reports indicate that the Iran-backed terrorist organization is stepping up operations inside Iraq aimed at stemming the Islamic State’s advance.

“Hezbollah is caught on two fronts, working with the Syrian [regime] but also really accelerating their clear-hold operations in Qalamoun. And we’re getting confirmation that Hezbollah is much more active in Iraq, in a training role [to help troops combat ISIS],” Aram Nerguizian, a senior fellow with the Center for Strategic and International Studies told Syria Deeply reporters recently.

Overnight, ISIS reportedly took control of Iraq’s largest dam as well as a series of oilfields in Iraq from Kurdish forces. Reports indicate that the fundamentalist militant group may hold the dam hostage and threaten the country with its destruction, which could result in the deaths of up to half a million.

Capture of the electricity-generating Mosul Dam, after an offensive of barely 24 hours, could give the Sunni militants the ability to flood major Iraqi cities or withhold water from farms, raising the stakes in their bid to topple Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s Shia-led government.

“The terrorist gangs of the Islamic State have taken control of Mosul Dam after the withdrawal of Kurdish forces without a fight,” said Iraqi state television.

The swift withdrawal of Kurdish “peshmerga” troops was an apparent severe blow to one of the only forces in Iraq that until now had stood firm against the Sunni Islamist fighters who aim to redraw the borders of the Middle East.

During a press conference on Friday, President Barack Obama said the threat that groups like ISIS posse to the United States is merely a “tangential” one. Perhaps it is now, but that threat does seem to be growing every day.

Headline: LEAKED CBP REPORT SHOWS ENTIRE WORLD EXPLOITING OPEN US BORDER

LUBBOCK, Texas — A leaked intelligence analysis from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveals the exact numbers of illegal immigrants entering and attempting to enter the U.S. from more than 75 different countries.

The report was obtained by a trusted source within the CBP agency who leaked the document and spoke with Breitbart Texas on the condition of anonymity. The report is labeled as “Unclassified//For Official Use Only” and indicates that the data should be handled as “Sensitive But Unclassified (SBU).”

The numbers provided are in graphics and are broken down into “OFO” and “OBP.” The Customs and Border Protection agency is divided into the Office of Field Operations (OFO) and the Office of Border Patrol (OBP). The OFO numbers reflect anyone either turning themselves in at official U.S. points of entry, or anyone caught while being smuggled at the points of entry. The OBP numbers reflect anyone being caught or turning themselves in to Border Patrol agents between the points of entry, or anyone caught at interior checkpoints by Border Patrol agents. The “OFO Inadmissible” designation to any individual from a nation other than Mexico or Canada means that U.S. authorities took the individuals into custody. Whether they were deported or given a Notice to Appear is unknown. It is important to note these numbers do not include data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The unavailable ICE data are in addition to these numbers.

The report reveals the apprehension numbers ranging from 2010 through July 2014. It shows that most of the human smuggling from Syria and Albania into the U.S. comes through Central America. The report also indicates the routes individuals from North Africa and the Middle East take into the European Union, either to illegally migrate there or as a possible stop in their journey to the United States. The data are broken down further into the specific U.S. border sectors where the apprehensions and contact occurred.

Among the significant revelations are that individuals from nations currently suffering from the world’s largest Ebola outbreak have been caught attempting to sneak across the porous U.S. border into the interior of the United States. At least 71 individuals from the three nations affected by the current Ebola outbreak have either turned themselves in or been caught attempting to illegally enter the U.S. by U.S. authorities between January 2014 and July 2014.

As of July 20, 2014, 1,443 individuals from China were caught sneaking across the porous U.S. border this year alone, with another 1,803 individuals either turning themselves in to U.S. authorities at official ports of entry, or being caught attempting to illegally enter at the ports of entry.

This comes amid a massive crackdown by Chinese authorities of Islamic terrorists in the Communist nation.

Twenty-eight individuals from Pakistan were caught attempting to sneak into the U.S. this year alone, with another 211 individuals either turning themselves in or being caught at official ports of entry.
Thirteen Egyptians were caught trying to sneak into the U.S. this year alone, with another 168 either turning themselves in or being caught at official ports of entry.

Four individuals from Yemen were caught attempting to sneak into the U.S. by Border Patrol agents in 2014 alone, with another 34 individuals either turning themselves in or being caught attempting to sneak through official ports of entry. Yemen is not the only nation with individuals who pose terror risks to the U.S. that the report indicates travel from.

The failed nation of Somalia, known as a hotbed of Islamic terror activity, was also referenced in the report. Four individuals from Somalia were caught trying to sneak into the U.S. by Border Patrol agents in 2014. Another 290 either turned themselves in or were caught attempting to sneak in at official ports of entry. This reporter previously covered the issue of illegal immigration into the U.S. from Somalia and other nations in the Horn of Africa….”

The Nixon doctrine of giving support to those who would fight for their own freedom would seem to apply to the Kurds. I think decisive assistance short of ground US combat troops to them at this time would be wise. PM Alawi may be an Iranian ally but the Kurds are not; so aiding the Kurds is not the double edged sword that aiding other factions in the area is.

A Kurdish ally could be very valuable in the event of a confrontation with Iran over their nuclear weapons program.

The problem is that it isn’t just Muslims being killed. Iraq, Syria and Lebanon have the highest population of Christians in the Middle East. They have been there for two millennia. In fact, ISIS just blew up the tomb of Jonah, Prophet of the Old Testament. In Lebanon, the Christians’ defender is Hezbollah, which sounds crazy but it’s true. “My enemy’s enemy is my friend.”

ImmigrantsWife on August 4, 2014 at 3:51 PM

Honestly I can’t believe the lack of interest/comments on this thread. These guys are the Nazis of the 21st century, and Obama is our Chamberlain. In fact, he’s worse; he grew up attending a maddrassah. ISIS will continue to take over as much land as they can in the Middle East and they will not stop, regardless of ridiculous sanctions, warnings, cease-fires or threats. THEY DON”T CARE. And if ISIS unites with Hamas, Israel has more trouble than Obama can shake a golf club at.

I never thought I’d ever say this, but Putin is more supportive of the Middle Eastern Christians than our own country. He supports Assad, with whom the Lebanese Army is lining up now. Europe are useless in this- where else will the Christians turn? The eunuchs at the UN? No one is helping them. Assad and Putin are their best outside chance right now.
