Bill Clinton, September 10, 2001: I could have killed Bin Laden once but called it off because of civilian casualties

posted at 12:41 pm on July 31, 2014 by Allahpundit

A time capsule from Australia via MSNBC, captured for posterity at what would have been around 11 p.m. New York time. The hijackers may have been ritually shaving themselves as he said it. Previewing the audio, the host says Clinton “almost brags” about his decision. Of course he does; at the time, it would have been a no-brainer for a politician to congratulate himself for sparing a terrorist in the name of also sparing dozens (or, if you believe Clinton, hundreds) of civilians, even if that terrorist was responsible for the U.S.S. Cole attack. Twenty-four hours later, I guarantee you he wasn’t bragging anymore. In fact, you can draw a straight line from this audio to America’s drone policy today. These 20 seconds or so are precisely why Obama ended up pulling the trigger on Anwar al-Awlaki and why he continues to pull the trigger on Al Qaeda’s bigger fish even if it means incinerating civilians in Waziristan or Yemen in the process. He’s never going to let a statement like this come back to haunt him. Post-9/11, when you’ve got a big fish on the hook, you reel him in come what may. A presidency can survive anger from doves and civil libertarians that the White House was overly aggressive in targeting jihadis. It can’t survive having skyscrapers knocked over by someone who, you’re sheepishly forced to admit, you had a clear shot at killing years before. By the same token, if the FBI had announced on the morning of 9/11 that they’d busted a spectacular Al Qaeda plot to fly planes into the Twin Towers, plenty of people would have chortled that that’s the most ludicrous, Michael Bay-ish nonsense yet cooked up by a government eager to find pretexts to roll back civil liberties. There’s a reason why the term “September 10th mentality” exists, and Bill Clinton’s not the only one who was guilty of it.

To be fair to the guy, I’m willing to believe he’d like a do-over on this today. Or am I being too fair? A Twitter buddy reminds me that, according to Michael Scheuer, Clinton’s administration had “about 10 chances” to kill Bin Laden in 1998 and 1999 and passed on all of them because the intelligence supposedly wasn’t good enough. I’d also like to know more specifics of what Clinton says here about his best shot at OBL. He says he could have taken him out in a “little town” called Kandahar in Afghanistan but would have killed 300 people in the process. But Kandahar’s not a little town; it’s a city, population 500,000. Is he thinking, perhaps, of … Tarnak Farms? Tarnak Farms was located near Kandahar but it wasn’t a “little town.” It was Bin Laden’s training camp for terrorists. There may have been women and children there, but you could have cut a swath through AQ by bombing it at the time. In fact, the CIA might have had Osama himself onscreen from drone surveillance in 2000; drones weren’t equipped with missiles at the time, but an airstrike could have been called in. Is that what Clinton’s thinking of here? Any enterprising reporters out there want to ask him?

Here’s the clip. Click the image to watch, then skip to 5:30 for the key audio. Exit question: Clinton says at one point that, had he bombed Bin Laden with civilians around him, “I would have been no better than him.” Does he still feel that way? Does he think Obama is no better than Al Qaeda for trying to neutralize threats from terrorists who take civilians as their main targets? Does Hillary think that? It’s 3 a.m. and the phone is ringing.

Barack Obama, as we know, was the first down the zip line from the chopper and PERSONALLY led Seal Team 6 to get Bin Laden. The fatal shot was delivered from his nonlethal skeet shotgun.

You’re talking about the jackload who signed into law the change in US policy to enact regime change in Iraq, and then failed to follow through the succeeding 2+ years, and whose only play at Al Qaeda was a Tomahawking of an empty training camp and a nearly-empty pharmaceutical plant done more to keep his perjurous testimony off the front page than to actually do anything about AQ.

Yep. This is exactly true. Clinton’s Monica confession speech bombed in a big way, and his response (LITERALLY THAT SAME EVENING) was to launch some cruise missiles at Iraq.

Clinton says at one point that, had he bombed Bin Laden with civilians around him, “I would have been no better than him.”

I wonder how that compares to Barack Obama who had no problem using drones to target high-value targets even if protected by human shields? Of course, like all things Obama, there’s an expiration date on that policy as the focus now is to declare victory and cede the field to our enemies.

Would Bill like a do over? Didn’t Bill admit that he wished that 9/11 took place under his tenure so he could be ‘Presidential’?

As for how Hillary would respond – she’s had her 3am call. On 9/11/12.

Funny how liberals like Clinton and his wife always preach to us about yielding to the “greater good” but the benefits always accrue to people who don’t deserve them.

I hope Clinton sleeps well at night knowing he let a dozen or so people associated with Bin Laden live so he could go on to kill over 3,000 Americans and scar countless others for a generation.

Marcus Traianus on July 31, 2014 at 1:03 PM

Not exactly new news…Clinton’s 11th hour refusal to give the go-ahead for pulling the trigger on bin-Laden has been a huge sticking point for me. After so much time, money, and effort…even the guys that had the terrorist mastermind in their sights couldn’t believe that the order was not to get him.

Yes, the camp where Osama was at had quite a few children around…for just that reason. What bothered me most tho was Clinton’s refusal of Sudan’s offer to hand bin-Laden over to the US. They had him…not a shot would need be fired, they were ready to serve him up on a silver platter. But Clinton declined the offer. And he has to live with that decision every day of his life.

Bin Laden Lived To Fight Another Day–Thanks To Bill Clinton
************************************************************

In his stunning 2003 book Dereliction of Duty, Air Force Lt. Col. Robert “Buzz” Patterson, a presidential aide and carrier of the “nuclear football,” describes President Clinton’s gross irresponsibility toward national security. Patterson tells how, in the fall of 1998, the watch officer in the White House Situation Room notified the president’s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, that they had located bin Laden and had “a two-hour window to strike.”

Here is Patterson’s chilling account:

Berger ambled down the stairwell and entered the Sit[uation] Room. He picked up the phone at one of the busy controller consoles and called the president. Amazingly, President Clinton was not available. Berger tried again and again. Bin Laden was within striking distance. The window of opportunity was closing fast. The plan of attack was set and the Tomahawk [missile] crews were ready. For about an hour Berger couldn’t get the commander in chief on the line. Though the president was always accompanied by military aides and the Secret Service, he was somehow unavailable. Berger stalked the Sit Room, anxious and impatient.

Patterson continues:

Finally, the president accepted Berger’s call. There was discussion, there were pauses – and no decision. The president wanted to talk with his secretaries of Defense and State. He wanted to study the issue further. Berger was forced to wait. The clock was ticking. The president eventually called back. He was still indecisive. He wanted more discussion. Berger alternated between phone calls and watching the clock.

The dithering continued until it was too late–and bin Laden lived to fight another day. And to plot the Sept. 11 attacks.

Too fair. I remember September 14, 2001 (when GWB showed up at Ground Zero) It’s the Friday after the atrocities. There had been a memorial service at the National Cathedral that morning (The Clintons were there as well as GWB).

While GWB was rallying first responders, Clinton was making claims that his super smart administration was the only reason why the nation was able to respond to the atrocities. Clinton’s supporters were lamenting the fact that he didn’t have a moment in history where he was standing amid the rubble with a bullhorn.

Plus let’s not forget that Clinton was there to build the wall that Jamie Gorelick had to defend during the 9/11 Commission hearings. That decisions made by Clinton were so incriminating that Sandy Berger was stuffing the hand-written notes from meetings in his underpants.

Clinton is indirectly responsible for the deaths of thousands on a single day. Had he taken the issue of terrorism seriously, it would not matter if he took out Bin Ladin or not.

If they haven’t sent infected people over yet, they are certainly working on it.

Our intelligence community knows it too and they have surely briefed King Putt, assuming he showed up for the meeting. Vacay planning is so much fun!

No spit, Sperlock.

Here’s cynical: I think Bill Clinton feels robbed. I think he feels robbed that 9/11 missed him by 8 scant months. If it had happened on his watch, his indelible label as “the BJ president” would have been erased; he would have been the “The whole world hears you!” standing-on-the-rubble president.

You want more cynical? I think Hillary is cheering on the rise of the global Islamist enemy because she wants to be FDR when she serves two terms. She wants to bravely, resolutely, powerfully lead the next Grand Alliance in a global hot war (albeit with tanks that run on Wesson oil driven by lactating single mothers) that will make WWII look like a playground incident. I think she envisions the historic Yalta-like photo of herself and other pillars of global power. I also think she has a role prepared for Chelsea in all this.

I think the Clintons feel that the timing of 9/11 is one of their greatest political misfortunes.

The excuse I heard most was that “Clinton left Bush a note about al-Qaeda planning an attack on the US”. To which I answered…”If Clinton knew this, why didn’t he get him when he had more than one chance to?”.

On a side note: Remember how Bill Clinton hung around all day on Bush’s inaugural day, dragging the press around with him as he went around to various locations to say his “goodby’s” instead of doing the classy, normal thing like get in Marine One and go? Clinton requested, and got, Air Force One for that…late in the day, of course.

It was recorded in several books about how Clinton was given several … yes SEVERAL opportunities to GET OBL, either by handcuffs or ordnance. One had OBL located and close air support fighter-bombers with Paveway’s on the racks, on the hot pad ready to sortie. But Bill had an urge to score … so he took a pass on the Executive Decision so that he could make a pass at some pulchritudinous pussy.

Think of the TOTAL WASTE OF OUR CAPITAL AND EVER SO PRECIOUS BLOOD AND YOUTH because Bill needed a little poontang.

Yet he remains the most respected Gimmedat politician of our time.

I remember reading about the number of Purple Heart medals that were ordered by the government in expectation of the number of estimated causalities. I understand many of those same medals were still on hand through the Iraq War.

hawkeye54 on July 31, 2014 at 1:41 PM

This is true. The DoD had so many Purple Hearts manufactured in anticipation of the horrible casualties in an amphibious invasion of Japan that they only recently had to procure more.

In other words, more soldiers were projected to be wounded or killed in that invasion than were wounded or killed in the next 5 wars we fought.

Imagine if pre-9/11 a president ordered the military to shoot down a hijacked civilian jet to prevent it from being used as a weapon.

Unfortunately, the video at the following HotAir post is no longer working:

But one of the key scenes is still available on YouTube…

I expect to see a U-Haul trailer behind airforce one filled with many White House “keepsakes” like the Resolute Desk…

The One already has his heel marks on it…so he thinks it’ll be a “You break it, you bought it” kind of a thing.

Sheila Jackson-Lee will tell everyone that Democrat staffers didn’t do anything like that to the Bush staffers’ keyboards.

JetBoy on July 31, 2014 at 2:43 PM

according to Michael Scheuer, Clinton’s administration had “about 10 chances” to kill Bin Laden in 1998 and 1999 and passed on all of them because the intelligence supposedly wasn’t good enough.

Yeah. We heard this before. So what? Clinton, as CINC, was only slightly better than Carter and King Obama.

Next! Wait for the screeching to begin!

I’ll try again … perhaps my selection of adjectives was too harsh for the moderator?

Can you imagine someone like Clinton or any other modern day Dem sitting in the Oval Office back in 1945 when the decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had to be made?

I would agree that Obama doesn’t want to be the guy that let a terrorist out of his cross hairs if he hadn’t let 4 of them (high level and dangerous) out of Gitmo for Bergdhal.

How much damage have the Clintons done…?

At President Clinton’s direction, no fewer than 10 federal agencies issued a chilling ultimatum to banks and mortgage lenders to ease credit for lower-income minorities or face investigations for lending discrimination and suffer the related adverse publicity.

Seven Percent Solution on July 31, 2014 at 1:15 PM

I was in the meeting when Janet Reno delivered this ultimatum. This cannot be stressed enough.

Clinton also installed Jamie Gorelick at Fannie Mae, as well as Tom Donilon who led its ruthless political and lobbying operation.

Clinton’s policies led to 9/11 AND the 2008 financial crisis.

It still bothers me that Sandy “Burgler” was allowed to steal documents from the national archives, shred them, and not do any jail time. Who knows what incriminating evidence he destroyed?

I believe the portrayal of him in “The Path to 9/11″… if you haven’t read my comments above, please do.

My bad on my original post; there is in fact another film with almost the very same name that was released about the same time.

I saw “The Path to 9/11″ when it originally aired, and Clinton did not come off well.
