Polls show Israel in lockstep with Netanyahu on Gaza war

posted at 4:01 pm on July 30, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Call this tunnel vision, in at least three ways. Opinion leaders have focused on the destruction in Gaza and the rising civilian deaths more than they have the source of the conflict, which is Hamas’ war on Israel and explicit commitment to an extermination policy. Those who attempt to intercede in the fighting to produce a cease-fire see that as an end in itself. Israelis living under the threat of Hamas’ attacks see the tunnels as an existential threat, and therefore give Benjamin Netanyahu almost unprecedented support to continue prosecuting the Gaza war — poll results that may shock those following the media coverage of the conflict:

Domestic support for the Israeli leader’s prosecution of the war in Gaza, which has left more than 1,200 Palestinians dead, has only grown over the past three weeks, as the Israeli public and political class rally behind an aggressive, definitive campaign against Hamas and its rockets and tunnels. The deep support among Israelis, from left to right, for the military’s Gaza offensive and Netanyahu’s leadership is almost unprecedented, political analysts say.

A poll this week for Israel’s Channel 10 news, conducted by the Sarid Institute, found that 87 percent of Jewish Israelis support continuing the Gaza operation. A survey by the Israel Democracy Institute found that 95 percent of Israeli Jews think the operation in Gaza is just, and 4 of 5 oppose a unilateral withdrawal. Just 4 percent said the Israeli military has used excessive force.

And in another survey this week, by the University of Haifa, 85 percent of Jewish Israelis said they are “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with Netanyahu’s leadership.

The American parallel would be the 1991 Gulf War and the near-unanimity of Americans in support of George H. W. Bush’s leadership. Bush’s approval went into the 90s briefly — all too briefly, as the election the next year proved. That, however, took place in the context of the American two-party federal system, not in a multiparty parliamentary system like Israel. Having that kind of support in a system where coalitions form and break apart on a regular basis is astounding. It allows Netanyahu carte blanche to set policy in the near term, and will force would-be intercessors to deal with the fact that Netanyahu really does represent Israel and not just his own war policies.

“Israel has never been this hard-line, maybe not since the 1967 war” against Egypt and other Arab states, said Amotz Asa-El, a fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute, a Jewish think tank in Jerusalem. “A sweeping majority of Israelis want a protracted, systemic, thorough uprooting of Hamas and its military capabilities.” …

“Netanyahu has always been the leader of the right wing,” Asa-El said. “But now he is leading the consensus.”

The difference this time is the tunnels. Israelis knew about the tunnels for years, but not their extent, and certainly not the plans Hamas had for making use of them. The discovery of large amounts of tranquilizers and handcuffs, as well as the intel on the alleged Rosh Hashanah plot, makes it clear that the tunnels are an existential threat to Israeli communities around Gaza, and they want them demolished before any withdrawal takes place. On top of that, the range of Hamas’ missiles have improved (even if their aiming has not) to threaten Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa, which means most Israelis now live under the missile threat. Hamas has made it impossible for Israelis to stop now, or to even consider the possibility of ending or easing the embargo.

In fact, Netanyahu may have a little trouble with the hawks. The Post notes that Netanyahu has acted to restrain those who want Israel to march all the way across Gaza to root out and destroy Hamas no matter the cost to the Gazans. Netanyahu wants to destroy the tunnels and perhaps create a “no man’s land” in northern Gaza to deny Hamas some ground for its missile launchers, and has acted to restrain those who want all-out war. As long as Hamas keeps launching missiles, though, that’s what we will continue to see.

The US and the UN are used to putting pressure on Israel to stand down on military operations, but that usually succeeds when Israeli opinion is split. “World opinion” may matter to Israel and Israelis, but not as much as staying alive. The outside intercessors may see a limit to their influence with Israel — so perhaps they’d be better off trying to influence Hamas away from starting wars that they can’t win in the first place.

He invaded Georgia in 2008 to defend “people”. He is took Crimea in 2014 to defend “his people” and he is helping rebels in Ukraine to you guessed it “defend his people”

Another example is the border situation. We have a bunch of kids coming to the border. Their reason for coming is they want refuge from gangs and violence. They have no tanks, no missiles, but all over the net all I read is “we are being invaded. America under attack” and so on. Only in the most legalistic dictionary definition of the word.

The Confederacy had spent decades importing kidnapped natives for cheap labor, giving a big fat ‘screw you’ to every small business and tradesman in the process, committed a laundry list of human-rights violations, turned themselves into a monocrop economy as doomed to failure as the Irish potato farmers, blamed the North for half of everything and their free labor for the other half, then attacked a Federal military installation and declared themselves a ‘nation’.

To call that an ‘invasion’ is scarcely less laughable than marching into an abandoned house, declaring it the Republic of Bob, and then calling the local SWAT team invaders.

Bob_B on July 30, 2014 at 5:15 PM

When one group attempts to kill another group, members of the group that is attacked tend to draw together rather than split apart. This is human nature. Pearl Harbor, 9-11 brought America together and no foreign opinion pressure at that time would have dissuaded the US from acting against the source of attack. No one should expect pressure on Israel to divide the Israeli people at this time. Once Hamas is defeated, and the debate on what to do there next starts; then there may be a role that outsiders can play to influence the decision but that is not at hand yet.

KW64 on July 30, 2014 at 5:16 PM

Lawful Good yes they attempted to end the war on the Western Front so as to continue their war in the East…& there is, IIRC classes correctly, some question about the popular support for their acts… of course without an accurate poll who can say? But certainly, until April 1945 there was very little resistance or opposition or “defeatism” displayed by the populace of Germany.

They knew that the “peace” coming was going to be very unpleasant, & realized that they HAD to fight with the Nazi’s to stave off the disaster.

I would argue that Palestinians are in much the same boat/dilemma…& please note I am not excusing either population.

Confederates, Germans, Palestinians all made their beds, by the choices they made… now INDIVIDUALLY one may have sympathy, but their collective acts brought down very bad, & foreseeable consequences. It’s like a nation of drunk drivers, they may not INTEND to kill innocents, but that doesn’t excuse them when they do so…

JFKY on July 30, 2014 at 5:21 PM

So, Lincoln was the invader.

sentinelrules on July 30, 2014 at 4:59 PM

But Lincoln was the president of the US in 1861 before war broke out. You can’t invade yourself. Ukraine is not invading East Ukraine. Georgia did not invade Goergia in 2008. Invaders is what Putin calls them. They were keeping the integrity of their country intact.

Unless you live in a world where there was two United States before the war in 1861 then Lincoln did not invade the south.

coolrepublica on July 30, 2014 at 5:21 PM

The Confederacy only existed for about 5 years.

wifarmboy on July 30, 2014 at 5:13 PM

The states that made up the Confed existed for long before that and practiced everything described for decades. Their union was merely one of dire necessity and had they won, it’s been speculated it would have done about as well as the US’s first attempt with the Articles of Confederation…best described as “a rope of sand”.

LawfulGood on July 30, 2014 at 5:26 PM

I saw a nice little protest of “Real Jews” (Their Term for Themselves) in the US. They were calling for an end to violence in Gaza.

JFKY on July 30, 2014 at 4:38 PM

Heck, I’m sure that Benjamin Netanyahu would approve of an end to violence in Gaza … as long as it also meant an end to people in Gaza having the facilities (like rockets and tunnels) to commit violence outside Gaza.

J.S.K. on July 30, 2014 at 5:27 PM

Just remember, folks: coolrepublica would be calling Ike and Patton and Montgomery “invaders” and calling for a peace when the battle for the Ruhr was being fought. CoolRepublica would be mourning the deaths of the brave guards at Birkenau and Auschwitz, from the evil invaders. Probably does anyway.

After all, in the modern leftist mind, Hitler was a failure…. he didn’t get all the Jews.

Vanceone on July 30, 2014 at 5:28 PM

I think what this latest Israeli war has taught us is that American Liberals are the closest thing you can get to the Nazis.

The Notorious G.O.P on July 30, 2014 at 5:28 PM

They knew that the “peace” coming was going to be very unpleasant, & realized that they HAD to fight with the Nazi’s to stave off the disaster.

I would argue that Palestinians are in much the same boat/dilemma…& please note I am not excusing either population.

JFKY on July 30, 2014 at 5:16 PM

Granted, and gladly so. I can hardly blame someone for taking up arms to fend off an incoming column of soldiers as foreign to them as Japan. But in either that case or that of the Pali’s, at some point you either have to accept that there is something greater than your little house and patch of land in the balance and choose accordingly.

“Get off my land!” is NOT an infallible battle cry and Israel should not be forced to curb her terrorist-squashing efforts for every illiterate sand rat with a couple olive trees and an AK-47. It’s cold…but it’s how things work.

God I love partisanship. Everybody is a nazi. America is just made of of Nasis. Liberal nazis. Tea Party Nazis. Evangelical Nazis. democrat nazis. lol

coolrepublica on July 30, 2014 at 5:32 PM

Unless you live in a world where there was two United States before the war in 1861 then Lincoln did not invade the south.

coolrepublica on July 30, 2014 at 5:21 PM

Of course Lincoln invaded the south based on any definition of the word invade. Prior to the civil war why should any state that joined the union as a sovereign entity have assumed that their entity wouldn’t again be sovereign upon withdrawal from the union? But regardless of all of that, the word invade includes military incursions into “regions” which means that sovereignty isn’t even a requirement.

You’ve put yourself in an indefensible position by making a stupid comment. You were trying to claim that any national leader has high approval ratings after an invasion. You made this claim as an attempt to brush aside Bibi’s high approval rating. That is just pure stupidity.

You never answered this question.

Do you actually think that Obama’s approval rating would increase if he invaded Canada?

Yes, yet she would loudly cheer for Obama if he invaded Canada.

corkie on July 30, 2014 at 5:45 PM

Ah, yes. Let’s analyze coolrepublica’s claim that everyone is a Nazi.

Who were the Nazi’s? National Socialists. They stood for an overpowering central government, for business decisions being made by the government.

They stood for racist ideology. They blamed the Jews for everything. They stood for gun control. They hated religion and Christianity, and instituted state deification, basically, of their leaders. They controlled the press and crushed dissent.

Which set of American Political parties does all of this? Why, the Progressive wing of the Democratic party, and Obama, their chief. Democrats see everything through racist eyes (“you only disagree cuz Obama’s black!!”) Obama, and Progressives in general, want all decisions to be made by government. They hate Christianity. They have tried to get us all to worship Obama. (see the shrines to “The One!” in many a progressive home). The media dances to the whims of the Democratic party–voluntary, so we don’t have a Goebbels yet. They use the government to crush dissent and harass their political enemies.

The only thing possibly “rightwing” about the Nazi’s was their strong defense and military orientation. But that was used to invade and crush liberty. Obama and the Progressives cheer on military use, as long as it is used to crush people. Like Putin, like Hamas.

Nazi’s promoted evil through the world, and evil ideologies. Progressives and Obama embrace the Muslim Brotherhood and have crushed millions of dreams.

You and your side ARE Nazis, Coolrepublica.

coolrepublica on July 30, 2014 at 6:08 PM

What do I think the Japanese thought? Maybe they did think of the Americans as “invaders.” So what? Who was in the right and who was in the wrong in WWII? The Allies were attacked, most of them invaded (Even the US, in Attu and Kiska), and eventually we won. Leftists have regretted us winning ever since.

I don’t care if Israel is “invading” Gaza. Just as Poland had the right to invade Germany after Sept 3, 1939, or DeGaulle and the Free French invading Germany in 44-45: it was Germany and Hitler’s fault, and I shed no tears over it. Just as Hamas deserves every single bit of what they are getting. And the Palestinians? Well, they elected Hamas. Maybe they should think before starting a war with the local superpower.

But then, Coolrepublica, you would probably cry about “Imperial warmongers” if the US responded to Belize launching missiles at us. After all, America and Israel are the “Bad countries” in the world, right?

Vanceone on July 30, 2014 at 6:12 PM

liberals go pound sand. If you have never been to Israel, shut up. How could you understand, you bunch of pea brains. If we had a leader instead of a soros puppet, maybe things would be different here. Bibi is a leader and understands what is at stake. He apparently believes in the oath he swore to uphold. That is something the cheap suit known as obama knows nothing about, along with his FUBAR administration. Oh ya, jesse sucks.

Some of the small percentage of Israelis who disapprove of Netanyahu’s actions against Hamas probably want stronger actions.

This is an existential struggle, or soon will be. Stop worrying about collateral damage, and defend your people to the max.

How many Israelis will die because of a sub-optimal destruction of Hamas?
