Grimes: Iron Dome really helps defend against the tunnels, or something

posted at 2:01 pm on July 30, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Not as big of a deal that Republicans will certainly make of this, but not entirely a nothingburger either. Alison Grimes, a state-level officeholder hoping to steal a march on the GOP and upset Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in this year’s midterms, got a question outside of her comfort zone and blew it. Asked about the Gaza War, the Democratic challenger gave a thumbs-up to Israel’s Iron Dome and its ability to protect Israelis from … the tunnels?

As foreign policy inches its way into a debate that has largely focused on the economy, Grimes was asked about congressional efforts to aid Israel’s missile defense system, known as the Iron Dome.

“Obviously, Israel is one of our strongest allies in the Middle East, and she has the right to defend herself,” Grimes said. “But the loss of life, especially the innocent civilians in Gaza, is a tragedy. The Iron Dome has been a big reason why Israel has been able to withstand the terrorists that have tried to tunnel their way in.

“My hope is that a cease-fire can be structured. Ultimately, I think the long-term solution though is not one we can impose. It has to come from within. It’s a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.”

There are actually two gaffes here. Technically, there is no such state as Palestine yet, but that’s the presumptive name used for the end result of a two-state solution. In this case, though, the problem doesn’t involve the Palestinian Authority and the two-state solution, at least not directly. Hamas controls Gaza, not the partner for the two-state solution for “Palestine,” and the solution for the West Bank will be much different than for Gaza as long as Hamas remains in control there. The PA tried to intercede this week with a cease-fire proposal that it claimed Hamas had accepted, only to have the rug pulled out from under them a few hours later when Hamas disavowed the effort entirely. The two-state solution has only a tenuous connection to what is happening in Gaza.

The bigger gaffe is the Iron Dome comment. Iron Dome shelters Israeli population centers from missile attacks, not the tunnels; it’s an anti-missile system akin to the earlier Patriot systems used by the US and Israel. And while the election won’t turn on Grimes’ foreign-policy acumen, this isn’t a non-sequitur to the race either. The Iron Dome system is a joint project between Israel and the US; Congress funds the development and deployment of the system, and it just recently added more funding to it as the Gaza War heated up. As a Senator, Grimes would have to vote on further funding and successor projects, and it’s at least worth questioning whether Grimes has any depth on these issues at all. The mistake certainly makes her look ill-informed and ill-prepared for the office she seeks.

In the end, though, Kentucky voters will be less concerned with tunnels in Gaza and Israel, and more concerned with tunnels in Kentucky. The Obama administration has battled the coal industry and battered it with regulatory adventurism that seeks to, as Barack Obama once said, “necessarily bankrupt” coal operators across the country. This election will hinge on jobs, the economy, and Obama’s agenda for the next two years. The question for undecided voters in the state will be whether Grimes can handle the job and whether she will be independent enough to stop Obama from harming their core industry any further. This misstep may say something about the former, but Mitch McConnell and the GOP would be better served by focusing on the latter.

Dion on July 30, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Technically, there is no such state as Palestine yet

WRONG. “Palestine” is the Roman word given to describe the country of Israel 2,000 years ago. There is already a state of Palestine, and it is Israel. Please stop propagating misuse of the word.

These “Palestinians” are not, and have never been from Palestine. They are Arab refugees, who are were kicked out and are not welcome in their home countries. They are used as pawns against Israel. Perhaps someone should be asking why a “peace plan” does not include resettlement back in their home countries.

IDF releases Iron Dome interception rate
Jeremy Binnie, London – IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly
20 July 2014
************

Israel’s Iron Dome system has successfully intercepted 86% of the Palestinian rockets that it has engaged during Operation ‘Protective Edge’, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

“Since the beginning of the operation, more than 1,260 rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip towards Israel,” the IDF said in a statement released early on 16 July to wrap up the first nine days of the operation. “Approximately 985 rockets hit Israeli territory and 225 rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system with an overall success rate of 86%.”

I don’t live in KY, so my opinion doesn’t matter. I just hope they don’t print the ballots out as a choice between Dumb and Dumber, that would make it really hard to choose.

ZeusGoose on July 30, 2014 at 3:26 PM

What we must not overlook when voting in all these Senate races is that the question of leadership and who sets the agenda is strictly a numbers game.

When the Senate or House goes into session they in essence simply count the number of Democrats and Republicans and whichever party has the highest number wins and they get to control the chamber. It doesn’t matter whether the Democrat is conservative or liberal it only matters that they are a Democrat.

Normally I am a great fan of voting for the most qualified person regardless of party. But in this election that would be wrong and detrimental to our country’s future. Every vote for a Democrat running for a Senate seat anywhere in the country is in reality a vote for Harry Reid.

Tsuchino1 on July 30, 2014 at 3:35 PM

Grimes is already under water with women in the latest poll. She isn’t going to do well as more and more people realize her position on abortion (she is very pro-abortion) and gun control. She has made more than a few guarded statements about more “reasonable” gun control laws. Neither of those things fly well here in Kentucky.

Not to get picky, but a missile is a rocket. Rocket is just a general description of a jet propelled missile of various kinds. The Atlas Rocket, was hardly ever called an Atlas missile.

But, for the layman, guided missile, and rocket is good enuf…

right2bright on July 30, 2014 at 4:53 PM

Since the beginning of the operation, more than 1,260 rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip towards Israel,” the IDF said in a statement released early on 16 July to wrap up the first nine days of the operation. “Approximately 985 rockets hit Israeli territory and 225 rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system with an overall success rate of 86%.”

Somebody seems a little math-challenged here. 225 intercepts out of 1,260 rockets is a success rate of 17.9%.

Maybe the Iron Dome works well when it’s engaged, but it doesn’t protect all of Israeli territory.

Somebody seems a little math-challenged here. 225 intercepts out of 1,260 rockets is a success rate of 17.9%.

Steve Z on July 30, 2014 at 5:05 PM

It seems safe to assume that Iron Dome did not engage all 1,260 rockets. An unengaged (ignored) or rocket should hardly count against the success rate of a missile defense system. It’s also possible that not every intercept was considered a success. For example, a rocket that still lands within a system’s area despite having been successfully intercepted is probably not considered a successive engagement. But I understand the point that you were trying to make. Much of the country is probably exposed since many rockets aren’t even engageable.

corkie on July 30, 2014 at 5:23 PM

Steve Z on July 30, 2014 at 5:05 PM

Yes and No. They may not be able to intercept some rockets due to trajectory, not enough warning etc. But they also choose not to intercept rockets that have a trajectory that takes them to areas where they are of no threat to the general public. I read the number as 225 iron dome missiles were launched and they had a success rate of 86% in destroying a rocket.

193 hits out of 225 attempts = 86% success rate.

Much, much better than the Patriot missiles did in the Gulf War.

Simonsez on July 30, 2014 at 5:30 PM

Not to get picky,

right2bright on July 30, 2014 at 4:53 PM

It’s better that you don’t get picky, because the differences between an rocket and a missile are much more are complicated than what you described. Also, GWB’s comment is in-line with common military parlance. Wikipedia describes it well and provides accurate qualifiers.
