As Jews flee Europe, the sneering media admonished again

posted at 10:41 am on July 30, 2014 by Noah Rothman

July’s headlines have been grim.

The eruption of conflict this month between Israeli Defense Forces and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip has brought the worst out of some Europeans (and a few Americans, too).

Thousands of Germans took to the streets of Berlin where they apparently sought out a fight with the city’s Jews and Israeli sympathizers: “Jew, Jew, cowardly pig, come on out and fight on your own,” they reportedly chanted.

In Italy, the resurgence of anti-Semitism is not even thinly veiled as protesters vandalized Jewish-owned businesses and synagogues. “ Phrases like ‘Anne Frank Was a Liar,’ ‘Dirty Jews,’ ‘Jews your end is near,’ and ‘Israel executioner’ were written in spray paint alongside Celtic crosses and rows and rows of swastikas,” the Daily Beast reported.

“Thousands had gathered to demonstrate against the Israeli bombardment of Gaza. But the protest soon turned violent – and against Jews in general,” read a Newsweek cover story datelined France. “Two weeks later, 400 protesters attacked a synagogue and Jewish-owned businesses in Sarcelles, in the north of Paris, shouting “Death to the Jews”. Posters had even advertised the raid in advance, like the pogroms of Tsarist Russia.”

The headlines from the Old World leads one to wonder just how committed the West is to ensuring that the human experience of the mid-20th Century is “never again” permitted to occur. At least, that is what the unsophisticated rabble would think. Fortunately, our erudite superiors in the press corps know better – or, at least, they knew better just a few weeks ago when the consensus opinion was to mock and deride those who are conscious of the tides of history.

Take, for example, Virginia economics professor Dave Brat who had the temerity to campaign vigorously for Congress and unseat former Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) in a primary. The tea party candidate’s victory immediately consecrated Cantor to the pantheon of reasonable and rational Republicans. As Jack Shafer observed, this is an honor the media more often bestows posthumously. The second immediate effect of Cantor’s loss was the familiar effort to impugn the motives, character, and intellectual capacity of his successor.

This instinct was demonstrated by former Politico reporter and current Wall Street Journal scribe Reid Epstein whose filed a report on Brat the day after his victory centering on what was framed as his bizarre conviction that the rise of a fascist strongman in Europe “could all happen again.”

David Brat, the Virginia Republican who shocked House Majority Leader Eric Cantor(R., Va.) Tuesday, wrote in 2011 that Hitler’s rise “could all happen again, quite easily.”

Mr. Brat’s remarks, in a 2011 issue of Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology, came three years before he defeated the only Jewish Republican in Congress.

“They’re suggesting Brat is pro-Hitler?” an incredulous Ace of Ace of Spades asked. “How else can one read their noting that Brat said that Hitler could rise again, and then mention that in reference to the defeat of the GOP’s only Jewish Congressmen as if they’re linked?”

Possibly. More likely the entire report was designed to serve as an unspoken shibboleth, a secret handshake, signifying that Brat was different. Provincial, paranoid, traditional – this report was meant to convey the impression that Brat is the kind of person who watches History Channel for the scant remaining programming devoted to abridged and simplistic history.

Brat’s “reference to Hitler’s Germany that is likely to turn heads during Mr. Brat’s first full day as a tea party star,” Epstein assured his readers. It did not, save for a few swivel-mounted crania in effete circles on the coasts. In fact, it was implied sneering at the academic assertion that a Hitlerian figure could again emerge, a claim vindicated by so many recent events, which irked Epstein’s readers more.

Another of Brat’s sins revealed in that report was his claim that private charity, capitalism, and Western religious culture can and should augment many of the current services provided by taxpayer-funded safety net programs. Brat added that Western Christian and capitalist traditions can buttress society so that government need not “backstop every action we take.” This led the philosophers at Think Progress to dub Brat a “radically pro-capitalist Christian theologian.”

Maybe those intellectually superior members of the journalistic class should take a lesson from alleged theocrats like Brat. He seems to have a better grasp on history than do his detractors.

Europe is a sick, sick place. They’ve never recovered from WWII. They’re committing slow cultural suicide by admitting millions and millions of Muslims into their countries, they say nothing when those Muslims commit atrocities and admit their intention to take over Europe. They persecute any European who dares speak the truth about what’s happening. They suffer from a deep cultural guilt that is paralyzing them. It’s bizarre. Perhaps blaming the Jews is a way to vent their anger without offending what should be the real targets, Muslims and their own ruling class.

“Triumph of the Return”

Israel Air Force Ceremony – F-15 Jets over Auschwitz

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1FHvsuMzAc

Uploaded on Apr 20, 2009

“Triumph of the Return” – On September 4, 2003, in a large ceremony, the Israeli Air Force flew three f-15 jets over the Auschwitz concentration camp in a show of the Jewish people’s continued strength and triumph over past adversities.
During the Holocaust (1939-1945) 6 million Jews were murdered at the hands of the Nazis and their collaborators. Millions of Jews and other victims of the Nazis were imprisoned, enslaved and murdered at Auschwitz and her sister camps.
This visit was a testament to the world that the saying “never again” is not just a slogan.
Many of the participants were the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors.

It’s a perennial problem for the Jews. They try hard to assimilate into the culture and are hated anyway. No matter how left wing the Jews become, the American and European left is never going to love and will always view them as Jews, even if they side with the left against Israel.

With that being said, these anti-semtitic attacks on Jews in Europe and the US is totally disgusting, and exposes the left as the loathesome bigots that they really are.

Every Jew I know adores evangelicals, but there is a distinction the poll misses. Not all evangelicals believe the same things.

Evangelicals who believe in multiple covenants? You do your thing, we do ours? Our best buds in the world. We appreciate and genuinely respect them. My Rabbi didn’t even blink when my best man was an evangelical (no joke). I have personally led multiple excisions through Israel for groups of them. Not for cash, just because they are awesome, and there were getting taken advantage of by dodgy tour groups. Even snuck one large group into an army controlled area where historically several interesting things were said to have happened from a new testament perspective. No big whoop to us, but they were on cloud nine.

But there are 2 other types that I can’t deal with.

Like, 1) Evangelicals who spend their every waking moment looking to “save me”. For some reason saving a Jew is a big deal to those guys and they are relentless. You can’t have a single conversation that does not stray into sin and Jews needing to “come home”. I can’t stand to be around them. Then there is 2) the evangelicals who believe that by not following Christ we are the greatest sinners of all. Like the preacher who called me a Christ killer in the middle of the service at his church when I was a young boy (I had been on a sleep-over with my friend).

Both of those types call themselves evangelical too. And no, I cant say as I want to be around them.

Bottom line: That poll doesn’t cover these differences, so don’t let it stress you at all. We love you guys, we truly do. :)

That’s okay, I suppose if I wanted to, I could pick out two stereotypes of Jews I don’t like and can’t stand to be around.

But most of us, we like to look at the bigger picture. First we are from the same biblical base, we are Abrahamic religions. So we have that very much in common, as are the Mormon’s, and ironically Muslims.

Second, the “judgement” of people because of religion is overrated, most do not judge people based on how they worship, but how they act.

And finally, Christians relish in Christ’s martyrdom, and Jew – their own…so that we have that in common.

right2bright on July 30, 2014 at 11:54 AM

The ironic thing is… it’s God’s love/promises to his chosen people that is the basis for Christian’s unconditional support.

AmeriCuda on July 30, 2014 at 11:16 AM

Yea… sure… because depending on how you read it, those Jews will finally be “saved.” and become believers in Christ. That’s one of the main reasons Christians want them around.

Stop being so patronizing.

Let me know when entire Jewish neighborhoods are being leveled by shelling from above. Or when the only power plant servicing a Jewish enclave is destroyed. Or when UN backed schools are being bombed by a foreign military force. Vandalism is always wrong, but there seems to be an attempt by Noah to raise sympathy for one group of unfairly targeted civilians while ignoring other unfairly targeted civilians. And the later group are actually being killed by the hundreds, rather than seeing ugly spray paint or having their windows broken. But I know, I know, I know, Palestinians were told to leave beforehand or something…

libfreeordie on July 30, 2014 at 12:01 PM

It’s a perennial problem for the Jews. They try hard to assimilate into the culture and are hated anyway.

Not true. It’s impossible to both assimilate and remain a distinct ethno-religious group. If Jews assimilated they wouldn’t be Jews anymore.

No matter how left wing the Jews become, the American and European left is never going to love and will always view them as Jews, even if they side with the left against Israel.

I’m not sure what you mean by “become”, Jews (particularly in Europe, but since European Jewish refugees overwhelmend America’s pre-existing Jewish communities, this has become the case in the US as well) have been heavily involved in left wing movements long before modern times (and well before the Holocaust for that matter). There’s a reason why anti-semitism has traditionally been associated with the right. Heavy Jewish involvement in Soviet Russia and other communist and socialist movements is part of why he was so effective in stirring up hatred against Jews. I’m also skeptical that the left hates Jews all that much. In France it’s illegal to deny the holocaust and making racist statements is illegal and can get you SWATted.

With that being said, these anti-semtitic attacks on Jews in Europe and the US is totally disgusting, and exposes the left as the loathesome bigots that they really are.

Doomberg on July 30, 2014 at 11:01 AM

That’s a simplistic view, particularly in Europe where things are a lot more complex than X-wing hates Jews and Y-wing loves Jews. This picture is hard to get by people from Anglo countries because anglo right-wingers tend to like Jews whereas non-Anglo right wingers don’t. In most of europe Jews are attached to the left, but Muslims are also attached to the left. Muslims don’t get along with Jews or Right wingers, but Jews and the Right don’t get along with each other either, nor do muslims and right wingers. Alliances of convenience can form randomly and with no discernible overreaching pattern.

Christianity in general and evangelical Christianity in particular considers evangelizing a huge part of its religion. If you don’t like conversion attempts, you don’t like evangelicals, unless, apparently, they act in contradiction to their faith. Plus, if you’re a (politically) conservative Jew, you’re in the minority and probably not a good sample of what the average Jew likes and doesn’t like to begin with.

Darth Executor on July 30, 2014 at 12:05 PM

That’s been the Catholic position for centuries. Yet it’s Protestant evangelicals who get Jewish disdain. And while you may personally love evangelicals, Jews as a group do indeed hold them in contempt. I think the root reason is that evangelicals actually do believe in what they profess to believe in.

F* the media.

Someone should do a drive-by on the media organizations, firing guns through their windows and shooting up their offices…when they complain to the police about the attacks they should be told to ‘exercise tolerance’, that they do not have the right to protection against those doing it, and then be told they do not have the right to defend themselves. After it happens about 3 – 4 days in a row it will get old and they will finally understand what Israel is facing. (OF COURSE I AM NOT advocating this to actually be done – giving this scenario to them verbally SHOULD get the point across. I don’t think ‘comprehension’ is the problem, though. The majority of the media is owned by foreign sources these days. I think they DO get it, but they are anti-semitic…seriously!)

Akzed on July 30, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Your first sentence is a demonstration of a basic ignorance of prophecy. I know of no one that believes as you say. OTOH, scripture does say that about the thirds of Israel will be killed just before Christ returns.

The organizations you list hold with replacement theology, which is heretical. As consequence, what you are calling “most Christians” aren’t Christians. If saying this gives you heartburn, I really don’t care. Romans Chapters 9-11 deal with the position of Israel and that the church did not take Israel’s place. God is not through with Israel and promises to her are still as valid as the day God made them, and God will make them good.

Irritable Pundit on July 30, 2014 at 11:36 AM

Yes those types are out there. The problem with your irritation with them is that they are correct. Secondly, Jews do hold Christians in contempt, and that was prophesied by a Pharasee known as Saul of Tarsus, otherwise known as the Apostle Paul. There are places in Jewish Israel that Christian can not go without Police escort as they will be assaulted. The Pharasee Party is quite alive and well.

Like it or not, it is the duty of every Christian to Evangelize anyone that is not Christian. Christians have a soft spot in their heart for Jews because they are the People through which Christ came into the world. No Christian wants anyone to spend eternity locked away from God, and that especially applies to the Jew.

We’ll be glad to put up with your irritation if there is a chance that you will become a Christian and not have to spend eternity as above. But, if you reject God’s provision for sin, then your blood is on your own head and you will hear the saddest words anyone could ever hear, “Depart from me, I never knew you.” Christ himself will say those words to you.

The difference, of course, is that Jews targeted in Europe are, by definition, not Israelis, they are Jews in Europe. This would be akin to American Jews attacking all Arabs in Deerborn, MI – not because they are Palestinian but because they are Muslim.

But, as we all know, you are an idiot, so of course that would escape you.

TarasBulbous on July 30, 2014 at 2:40 PM

It mystifies me how so many end up hating Jewish people. How is this still a thing? Are these mostly immigrant Muslims who automatically side with Palestinians? Sometimes you can’t even tell who’s Jewish, so how do people end up hating them?

According to that poll a while back, most religions were pretty neutral towards Jews. I’m curious why it’s so different in Europe. Then again, that same poll suggested Jewish people dislike Evangelicals. Is it because of Medieval history, or is it our current political visibility, or what? The way people react doesn’t make much sense.

I don’t follow this conversation. “Israel” is a nation in the sense of the people descended from Israel, the man. They were a people group primarily, and a political entity at different times in history.

Those who were descendants of Israel who believed in Christ would not have construed themselves as leaving anything. It was the Gentiles who joined them in what they believed was the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham; a blessing that would extend to the whole world. I don’t honestly see how this should offend a Jewish person, except it’s not what they believe.

I’m pretty sure that offense has more to do with later events/interpretations.

I’m not sure how this relates to the subject of the End Times though (I think I saw that mentioned earlier on).
