Georgia Democratic Senate candidate’s leaked campaign memo: She needs Jewish donors. Also, she sort of funded Hamas.

posted at 4:41 pm on July 28, 2014 by Allahpundit

Wish I could take credit for that headline but it’s Aaron Gardner’s.

Here’s a nice scoop for Eliana Johnson, who somehow got hold of an early memo prepared by Michelle Nunn’s Senate campaign in Georgia after they stupidly posted it online briefly last winter. Of the many gems within, my second-favorite is the one emphasizing “rural” photo ops to show Georgians that Nunn is one of them. She’s a creature of the Beltway since birth, having grown up in Maryland while her dad Sam served in the Senate, but it’s important when trying to inherit a Senate seat as part of a political dynasty to convince the local rubes that you care about what they care about before being handed the scepter.

As I say, that’s my second-favorite revelation. Here’s my favorite. Those three little letters say so much:

Good news for Jewish donors, I guess. If her line on Gaza ends up being a bit too pro-Hamas, cut her another check and see what happens.

More “rural” pandering here. You trust her to stick to a strong pro-gun-rights line in the Senate, don’t you?

And, when all else fails, trust the media to swan-dive into the tank:

The nonprofit that Nunn leads gave grant money to an Islamic charity that’s been banned by Israel because it allegedly funnels money to Hamas. Her own campaign memo warns her to prepare to be accused of giving money to terrorists. Which is more good news, ironically, for Israel-supporting Democrats: Because she’ll be eager to prove she’s not pro-Hamas, she’ll probably end up taking a fairly strongly supportive line on Israel no matter how many donations she ends up getting. This month only, Michelle Nunn’s foreign policy is on sale!

Believe it or not, this loser is highly competitive in a red state based on little more than the recognition that comes with her surname. See why Chelsea Clinton’s definitely, definitely going to end up running for something someday? Exit question: How many newbie Senate candidates have similar memos like this in their files?

Given the incredible burden to changing the outcome of any Georgia election through a recount, it will be even more important to get all voter protection incidents taken care of prior to the end of election day. Because all Georgia counties use the same electronic voting machines and they all feed directly into one county tabulation machine, there is very little opportunity for human error. All of this makes it even more important for us to push our target voters to early vote, thus giving the campaign and its attorneys additional time to deal with any voting challenges.

This doesn’t seem suspicious at all.

All of them. They just aren’t stupid enough to put them out on the internet.

This is the sausage making of political campaigns. Issue by issue you realistically assess the situation. You figure out how to shape the message, woo potential donors, and minimize the weaknesses. But you don’t make it a public document. I can only imagine how the Labovitz’s feel about being seen as a Hebrew ATM.

From age six Nunn lived in Montgomery County, Maryland. She attended the National Cathedral School for Girls where Susan Rice and the female Gore brats went. It’s the sister school to St. Albans where Al Gore, Brit Hume and a whole lot of others went. This is one of the most elite schools in America. So it is absurd to think that Michelle Nunn showing up to get herself a huntin’ license will make her seem folksy.

BTW, Jimmy Carter had a shtick where he carried his own luggage. Most of the time they were empty bags. Props as hollow as Carter’s administration. Clearly Michelle Nunn has a famous daddy but she’s using Carter ’76 as her campaign model.

Sam Nunn, her father, would be considered a Republican today. She however is an old fashioned liberal. Although the latest polls from before the Repub primary runoff showed her in a dead heat with Perdue that will disappear rapidly. There is no chance this carpetbagger will ever become a Senator from GA! The Atlanta Journal Constitution aka birdcage liner, will support her no matter what she says/does. So will most of the other papers here in GA. It won’t matter, she will lose.

The whole article is great, but this is my favorite section:

Nunn and the HandsOn Network, which operates under the umbrella of Points of Light, also heaped praise on a former death-row inmate even after his continued run-ins with the law. Shareef Cousin is one of the contributors to Nunn’s 2007 book, Be the Change, a collection of quotations and reflections from people who, according to Nunn, have embraced their “capacity to make a difference.”

Cousin’s inspiring story was bookended with troubling behavior. In 1996, at the age of 16, he became the country’s youngest-ever death-row inmate. His conviction was overturned in 1998, but he remained in prison until 2005 on a 20-year sentence for armed robberies he had pled guilty to before his murder trial. In 2008, while he was still on parole, Cousin pleaded guilty to using his boss’s Social Security number to obtain credit cards and then, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, using the cards for a “$42,000 spending spree on audio equipment and a paint job for his car.” In August 2010, the HandsOn Network recognized Cousin as a “voice of change.”

Former president George H. W. Bush founded the Points of Light Foundation in 1987 to encourage volunteerism across the country. Since Nunn became the CEO in 2007, it has awarded grants to hundreds of charitable groups, and the campaign document raises alarm bells about “grants to problematic entities” and “notable line items” in its 990 forms. It has given money to organizations whose charitable missions appear questionable, including the International Mountain Bicycling Association, which sponsors gatherings of mountain-biking “thought leaders,” and the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, which seeks to foster a global network of lesbian and gay bands.

RCP Race Analysis:

In 2002, Georgia snapped. The state had been among the last in the South to cling to its Democratic roots: Bill Clinton carried Georgia in 1992, and a coalition of African-Americans and rural whites had kept the Democrats in control of the governor’s mansion, the legislature and even a Senate seat. All of that changed in 2002, as rural whites revolted, throwing out the Democratic governor, senator, and (two years later) the legislature. Two years later, Republican Johnny Isakson rolled to a 58 percent-40 percent win over Congresswoman Denise Majette. Democrats enjoyed a reasonably close race in the 2008 general election, but fell badly short in the runoff necessitated when neither Saxby Chambliss nor Jim Martin topped 50 percent.

Democrats are excited about Michelle Nunn’s chances of ending the party’s 14-year dry spell in the Senate, and changing demographics may indeed help the party of Jackson regain its footing here. But this is still a Republican state, and even with massive black turnout in 2008, Democrats couldn’t put the Senate seat away. This race starts out close, with Nunn and Perdue trading leads in the polls, but given the environment and the Republican lean of the state, Perdue probably starts with an edge.

A Hamas supporter looking for Jewish backing is ironic only if you don’t understand American Jews. Cynics have argued that not even God Himself can get Jews and Arabs to agree on anything .Yet the Democratic party routinely gets huge majorities of both ethnic groups (80% of Jews and 93% of Arabs in the last presidential election.) You can be anti-Semitic (blacks, Hispanics, Arabs, young college radicals ,university professors and labor unions) even advocate the annihilation of Israel AS LONG AS YOU’RE A DEMOCRAT.
