George Will on what the message to migrant children should be: ‘Welcome to America’

posted at 8:41 am on July 28, 2014 by Noah Rothman

In an appearance on Fox News Sunday, conservative columnist George Will had some harsh words for those who insist that the waves of migrant children crossing the border from non-contiguous nations in search of asylum.

“We ought to say to these children, ‘Welcome to America, you’re going to go to school and get a job and become Americans,’” Will insisted.

He seemed to suggest that those who advocate for the deportation of South and Central American minors underestimate America’s power to assimilate foreign-born populations.

“We have 3,141 counties in this country. That would be 20 per county,” he added. The idea that we can’t assimilate these eight-year-old criminals with their teddy bears is preposterous.”

Fox host Chris Wallace sounded a note of skepticism when he interrupted Will to add that he could sense viewers already sending in angry emails contesting the syndicated columnist’s iconoclastic take on the border crisis. Will countered that the waves of immigrants America took in and assimilated in the 19th Century vastly outnumbered the present influx.

He said that the greatest counter to illegal immigration ever passed by the United States was NAFTA, “which it put the Mexican economy on the road to prosperity.” Will advocated for a similar free trade agreement with Central American countries and a plan to reduce America’s illegal drug consumption in order to arrest the flow of immigrants from unstable countries like Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Will is not the first conservative commentator to take the view that the United States should treat border crossing minors differently from other illegal immigrants.

Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, writing in Politico Magazine this month, made a similar case and outlined a logistical framework focused on churches and charities which would facilitate the assimilation of Central American children fleeing violence in their home countries.

A Pendleton base of operations will instantly attract the support and contributions of goods and services from the amazing network of churches in Southern California, just as it did in 1975. Pastor Rick Warrren and Orange County Bishop Kevin Vann need only summon their thousands of colleagues to a meeting and the short-term needs of these children will be met by volunteers bearing toys, food, clothing and English lessons, as well as adult supervision of the best sort. (Pendelton borders Orange County on its north, home to both Warren and Vann. Their San Diego counterparts would no doubt also throw all in.) It would be a giant Vacation Bible School without the Bibles, but it would work.

Likewise, if officials put in charge of assigning adoptees to applicant parents are caring, non-ideological officials, perhaps jointly credentialed by a body jointly selected by House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama, the adoption process will proceed quickly and with little fuss. Children will end up dispersed all across the country. The lucky ones will be in Northeast Ohio where they can become LeBron fans instantly. The less lucky ones will be sent north to Minnesota where the sun doesn’t shine but the Lutherans are welcoming and the State Fair fabulous.

Overnight they will be on the road to being Americans.

Well the majority of the kids are teenagers- some gangbangers, want them at your house George? The young ones, unaccompanied, should be re-united with their parents in their home country. Why do dems want to destroy more families, like they did here with blacks?

A few questions, George. Most of these “migrants” aren’t kids. Do we accept them as well? What about the “kids” who are actually teenagers? How easy will it be to assimilate them and teach them English? Are you arguing that all 3,141 counties be required to take 20 “kids”? What if some of those counties can’t afford the cost? Do we shift those extra people to another county? If so, how is it determined who has to take them on? What if it winds up being more than 20 per county when all is said and done? What about the parents and siblings of these “kids”? Do we have to allow them to come here too? How will they be assimilated?

If it sounds like a lot of questions, well that’s because this is a very messy and slippery slope we’re going down once you start to allow people here out of some misplaced sense of compassion. Before you know it, you’ve opened the door for millions of people who will never assimilate into the population, will be a huge financial burden on our already tapped out entitlement state, and worst of all, will inevitably vote 80+% Democrat the moment they’re granted citizenship(or even before then).

darwin on July 28, 2014 at 8:51 AM

Really?

We do not need Central American teenage boys, we need immigrants who will benefit the United States. George Will does not get it, it is not this 57,000, it is the next hundred of thousands of kids who come. I do not disagree that drugs and improving the Central American economies are important, but an open door policy here is a disaster.

Evi L. Bloggerlady on July 28, 2014 at 8:51 AM

“We ought to say to these children, ‘Welcome to American, you’re going to go to school and get a job and become Americans,’” Will insisted.

“And kids, laws don’t mean anything here, as you’ve seen. You can do whatever you want regardless of what the law says, as long as it feels good to you or you believe it will benefit you or your family or your criminal associates or your racial identity group.”

“As for becoming Americans or getting a job, if you’re like millions of real Americans now, you’ll be unable to find a job. But like other millions of Americans, you’ll have no trouble signing up for taxpayer-funded benefits like food stamps, welfare, Medicaid, etc. And kids, enjoy those “free” benefits while you can, because with millions more takers like you in the pipeline, it won’t be long before the system –and the country — implodes. Enjoy!”

These children are not fleeing violence. They are parasites. Each will cost the taxpayer a minimum of 15k/y. Some will cost us 50k/y. They majority will be low skilled labor for life also being supported by the taxpayer. Those are the demographic facts.

aniptofar on July 28, 2014 at 9:01 AM

So George, what about the American born children who are not being parented or schooled? I understand that a lot of that would appear to be willful choices but that doesn’t make the children unable to change the circumstances any less “innocent”. It totally boggles my mind when people act like “big deal – it’s just a few little kids” Does the man not realize there are already little children here in this nation, children of existing citizens, children who have needs unmet?

It’s foolish to imply the children would be spread around – they will be either dumped into the cesspools we already have in many urban cities or handed out to places that have no experience dealing with the baggage these immigrants are carrying. Call me mean but my school taxes are already too high – I’m not inclined to pay more to educate/house/feed/ etc numerous illegal immigrant families. If we go down this road we will be receiving a flood of immigrants until there are only the drug cartels left in those countries.

Will is not the first conservative commentator to take the view that the United States should treat border crossing minors differently from other illegal immigrants.

Conservative commentator? Where? Where is this conservative commentator you speak of?

This loop-hole that Democrats inserted into our immigration policy and which Republicans were too gutless and stupid to remove is the reason we have this invasion, our President ignoring the rule of law is the reason we have kids, young-adults, and yes adults too risking rape & death in order to storm our border, oh and countries such as Mexico giving free pass through their nations is another reason we have this invasion. But per Will, it is selfish Americans who are denying the world their right to be Americans, sorry we don’t want more mouths on the entitlement teat when we’ve got enough current debt to destroy our nation, huge unemployment, and supposedly some sort of recovery that feels nothing like one.

Will, I was barely holding onto a shred of respect and interest in what you had to say before hearing this rant… I’ll just assume going forward whatever you have to say is just as idiotic as the above.

Ukiah on July 28, 2014 at 9:05 AM

Adoption? None if these kids will qualify under Hague because their patents are not going to eschew their parental rights. These kids are their golden ticket so why would they?

Second, each new immigrant actually translates into several more as these immigrants can eventually petition fir their parents, spouses, stepchildren, natural children and siblings. And in places like El Salvador and Honduras that can frequently mean upwards of 20 people per one original immigrant.

Emotions are allowing scores of undocumented (illegal) aliens that are not old enough to work so the liberals have a fresh mind to turn to mush until the children begin crying to allow their parents into America without any marketed skills which will allow the left to indoctrinate another generation of uninformed voter, programmed to vote (D) without understanding that (Des)politicians are just as corrupt and brutal as those they left behind.

The problem isn’t 60,000 children, which really is a small number in a country of 330,000,000 people. It’s the 4 billion others behind them. With little or no enforcement on the border and a welfare state calling them, half the world’s population is considering crossing illegally.

Oh, hadn’t thought about that, interesting caterwauling to follow. Not that I don’t enjoy watching the left turn themselves inside out.

Cindy Munford on July 28, 2014 at 9:58 AM

So George Will is going to adopt 20 children?

bossmanham on July 28, 2014 at 9:59 AM

“We have 3,141 counties in this country. That would be 20 per county,”

Laughable in that they will be drawn into large cities (read:voting blocs) and will pull the lever for the Dems every time thereafter. I mean the whole thing is a joke, but that part I think is the funniest

Gatsu on July 28, 2014 at 10:03 AM

“…America’s power to assimilate foreign-born populations…”

This isn’t 1900 when immigrants came here specifically to become Americans (like my grandfather did). We lost the ability to assimilate foreign-born populations when they started flooding in illegally. People who break American laws, don’t want their kids to be Americans. Send them back.

itsacookbook on July 28, 2014 at 10:04 AM

No, it isn’t our responsibility. We should help our own people first. Then be generous where we can to others.

That doesn’t require allowing them to violate our laws and perpetuate more of the same.

lineholder on July 28, 2014 at 9:38 AM

BTW, Will ignores the fact that it is taxpaying Americans that would be forced to finance these invaders. Not only for their education but all the welfare “freebies” that they are invading to get. Not one of them is interested in getting a job and becoming a citizen.

Happy Nomad on July 28, 2014 at 10:04 AM

Maybe George could take a few in to assimilate and show us how it’s done. So, how many can we put you down for, Mr. Will? Are these people naturally stupid or do they work at it? We haven’t been able to assimilate the natives and the imports in 250 years.

Kissmygrits on July 28, 2014 at 10:07 AM

Yes we CAN assimilate them, but why not assimilate LEGAL immigrants instead?

Why do we even have TSA and have to pass a security check at airports if the whole world can just walk through the border?

What county does George Will live in? I nominate the twenty “children” on the front page of Drudge right now to be sent there.

ctmom on July 28, 2014 at 8:47 AM

Not surprisingly, it’s just a random pic Drudge found and chose to use. Of course most folks know bullsh*t when they see it.
But most folks aren’t Drudge readers – something he knows.

I now tune out George Will as a “conservative” commentator. He’s a total fraud. I look forward to Mark Levin et. al. BURYING him today. Should be fun.

cdog0613 on July 28, 2014 at 10:26 AM

I think America’s message to ILLEGAL (not ‘Migrant’) children should be about RESPECT FOR THE RULE OF LAW, RESPECT FOR OTHER NATION’S LAW, that they can NOT just come across the border and shove their hands in other people’s pockets and taking their money to take care of you. (Don’t get me wrong, America is the most generous nation in the world, but we demand to have a say in what we give, to whome we give, when we give, and how much we give.) We should give aid and support to their home nations, teaching them that they need to clean up their own d@mn mess that is driving its people to America…where their massive numbers are creating a mess HERE. We should also teach people of every nation (something that every other has already recofnized) that just because an illegal crosses the border and delivers a baby THAT does not make you an American. Being an AMERICAN involves a great deal more than just being delivered on US soil…and just because you do this illegally does not make you or the baby a financial responsibility to the United States. Illegals are flooding here now because the US Government has demonstrated no respect for or intent to enforce its own laws. If the United States doesn’t respect its own laws, why should anyone else in the world! (Its like with Obama’s Syrian Red Line – If Obama had no respect for or intent to enforce his Red Line, and continues to back down from everything he says, why should anyone else respect / believe anything he says?)

The Federal government’s message to us for a long time now is that ‘We can seize as much money from you without your say whenever we want to pay for whatever we want…whether it’s ‘Shrimp on a Treadmill’, to Fund ANOTHER Obama $1 million vacation, or to help pay for our military aid Al Qaeda take over Libya.’ ‘Democracy’ for now has become an illusion – Americans BELIEVE they still have it but do NOT! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

easyt65 on July 28, 2014 at 10:30 AM

No. What we should be saying is: Sometimes life sucks. Sorry that yours does-but you are here illegally and need to get out.
If you come back here legally, assimilate etc-we will welcome you.
If you attempt to ILLEGALLY cross the border again-you will be gunned by agents down before you set foot on US soil.
Yeah-I support snipers or whatever at the borders.
No more ‘nice’.

annoyinglittletwerp on July 28, 2014 at 10:30 AM

We are doing such a great job with creating an underclass…at this point, what difference does 100k more make!

Deafdog on July 28, 2014 at 10:31 AM

Here’s a lesson for illegals — Americans must obey the law and buy a license to go fishing and hunting. If we engage in either of these without doing so we can be fined and even put in jail….but you can illegally enter this country, stay here, and get access to ever tax payer-funded social program. Thanks to Obama’s directive to the DOJ, you can also perpetrate any crime – to include violent assault and sex crimes – and not have to go to jail or be deported.

easyt65 on July 28, 2014 at 10:32 AM

He’s not called The Perrier Conservative for nothing.

formwiz on July 28, 2014 at 10:36 AM

78% of border jumpers are “family units”.

How ’bout we talk about that George, instead of perpetuating the dishonest Dem narrative that the U.S. border is being invaded by orphaned
“eight-year-olds with teddy bears”?

verbaluce on July 28, 2014 at 10:24 AM

I will take your word on the picture being random as you have never lied, to me.

I did a google search “readership of NYT vs Drudge Report”. For the NYT—-readership plus their online activity is around 1,731,000 (Print 731,000–Digital 1,100,000) daily and Drudge is at least 15,000,000 daily. I have not verified the numbers, but it makes sense that Drudge has more activity than the NYT. Got the info from Poynter.

HonestLib on July 28, 2014 at 10:44 AM

Someone needs to tell George Will that these children don’t care for baseball and wear blue jeans.

He’ll be all in for deporting them then.

Mike Honcho on July 28, 2014 at 10:45 AM

I’ll contribute bus fare to send these po’ illegal chillun’ to George Will’s house so he can put em’ up and educate them hisself…
