Video: We need more nuanced coverage of Israel says…Joe Klein?

posted at 10:11 pm on July 24, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

Andrea Mitchell vs. Joe Klein, the bantamweight match-up of diminutive liberals you’ve been waiting for!

Time magazine’s Joe Klein defended Israel’s operation in Gaza on Morning Joe, while MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell criticized their strikes and called the attacks asymmetrical.

“I think that it’s pretty well known that I’ve been very critical of Israel in the past,” Klein noted. But in this case, Klein said there has been “a failure of reporting on our side about the extent of the Israeli operation.”

“This has been pretty well targeted,” he argued.

Mitchell disagreed, citing civilian casualties, to which Klein curtly replied, “This is war, Andrea.”

On CNN, Israeli ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer urged Erin Burnett to turn the outrage of the media, the network, and the international community on Hamas for storing weapons in schools and hospitals.

The latest example came with the story of 16 people killed in a U.N. hospital in Gaza during an strike. Although Israel was blamed for the hit, the Israeli military said the attack could very well have come from Hamas in a misfired rocket, and Burnett asked whether Dermer knew more on the matter.

Dermer reminded Burnett Hamas has been using schools, hospitals and other non-military installations as weapon depots.

“It would be a disservice to your viewers for a reporter from Gaza not to mention that in the last week we had two different UNRWA schools where we had actually rockets found in the schools and handed over to Hamas,” he said.

Dermer grew angrier when he mentioned he’d watched two hours of CNN and not heard a single reporter tell the viewers of this practice.

“I have not heard a single person say what I just said to you now, and I think that that does a disservice to your viewers to not give them the context they need to make these judgments,” he said. “Hamas is placing missile batteries in schools, in hospitals, in mosques, and there must be outrage by the world at Hamas to end this.”

I get veritably Sternian on this subject. It grows ever-more frustrating, frightening and demoralizing to see people who claim to value pluralism, democracy, freedom, tolerance, and modern civilization make excuses for a terrorist regime lobbing rockets by the thousands onto innocent civilians with the express intent of killing them. We never hear about the thousands of rockets that fall in between ground conflicts designed to get Hamas’ rocket fire to go back to relative infrequency. It is not Israel that breaks every ceasefire. None of the media ever reminds us that Israel entirely withdrew from Gaza, forcibly removing longtime residents to give Palestinians exactly what they claim to need to establish a coexistent state, and that Hamas on their border is what they got for their trouble. I’m disturbed by the notion, often communicated explicitly, that the only way Israel’s actions can be just is if the Jews oblige their enemies by dying in greater numbers.

So, good on Dermer and Klein, and to those, left and right, who are able to see this with moral clarity.

People are getting on Israel’s case about collateral civilian casualties, while Hamas is just firing scores of missiles every day willy nilly into the Israel civilian population. That’s not considered bad?

Spot on, MKH. I keep waiting for someone to ask one of these media hacks what they suggest Israel do, turn off the Iron Dome so the Palestinians can kill more Israel civilians, to even up the score?

That is the only answer to their insistence on substituting Hamas’ gruesome math for common (or moral) sense.

IndieDogg on July 24, 2014 at 10:18 PM

Why is there even a debate about a terrorist gang starting an unprovoked war?

I mean, I guess I know why lefties might want to root against Israel defending herself but to do so outside of their natural inclination to support thugs?

A much closer equivalent is a rapist and a woman whipping out a concealed pistol at him.

There’s your problem right there MKH. Those people you think hold those values, in fact do not. The only values they hold, are that the End justifies the means. You are living in a fantasy land delusion fueled and fed by people who are knowingly and willfully deceiving you.

Something else the Israeli ambassador could have added: If Israel was as bad as the press reports want to suggest, they would have simply cut off all electrical power in Gaza and let them suffer after the Hamas rockets started raining down. Gaza gets all its electricity from Israel, they have zero power plants, and no way to produce it even on a short term basis.

Israel has been more restrained than any other nation would have been, given similar circumstances. Actually, too restrained in my view. These animals and even the innocents attached to them are the ones that should be wiped from the face of the earth, as Iran and Hamas have vowed to do to Israel.

Fvck Shalom, these savages have no idea of the concept of peace.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/07/23/darth-vader-is-polling-higher-than-all-potential-2016-presidential-candidates/

Hillary Clinton currently has the highest net favorability of any 2016 White House contender. But to put her 19 percent favorable rating in context, she’s tied with Boba Fett, the bounty hunter who froze Harrison Ford in carbonite.

None of the 2016 hopefuls is polling higher than Darth Vader. You’ll recall that Vader chopped off his son’s arm and blew up an entire planet, but evidently in the eyes of the American public these are minor sins compared to Benghazi, Bridgegate and Gov. Rick Perry’s hipster glasses. These numbers suggest that if “Star Wars” were real and Darth Vader decided to enter the 2016 presidential race, he’d be the immediate front-runner.

Meanwhile President Obama is polling just two favorability points below Emperor Palpatine, Lord of the Sith. Make of that what you will.

It’s a nice post. But I think it’s more than disturbing.

Iran has its proxies in this war. And the liberals in this country use their pro-Hamas/anti-Israeli sentiments as proxy for their anti-Americanism.

I don’t know Erin Burnett’s history (other than as an intellectually bankrupt CNN excuse). But Andrea Mitchell has been displaying her anti-American sentiments for decades. Being pro-Hamas just allows her another opportunity to do it again.

1) There is no such thing as a “Palestinian.”

2) Even Israelis admit that they do a terrible job of explaining what is actually going on there to the world. The guy in the Erin Burnett clip did a bit of a better job than usual, but there’s a long way to go.

I don’t mean to pick on the Israelis in this regard, because our own politicians, media, and academic institutions are all obfuscating this as well.

3) Eff Erin Burnett.

4) All anyone needs to do to understand all of this is read Robert Spencer’s Jihad Watch site.

It is a violation of international law to store or house military equipment or personnel in hospitals or UN (or other international relief agencies) facilities. Hamas does this routinely, not a peep from the antisemitic press.

Hamas has declared they will accept no ceasefire that doesn’t life the Egypt-Israel blockade of arms coming into Gaza. Again, not a peep.

Hamas wants this war to go on. They view the deaths of their own civilian population as good PR.

~~~
BTW, remember that Hamas terrorists don’t wear a uniform, so all these “civilian” casualties aren’t necessarily innocents.
Remember that these same sycophants who attack Israel for accidentally killing children whose parents put them in the line of fire are the same ones who will pretend to be so righteously indignant that the God of the Old Testament would command the Israelites to wipe out whole cities and nations.
If I never understood that harshness before, I do now. Until Israel deals with Hamas in a truly Old Testament way, there will be no peace in Israel.
Middle Eastern people do not fight wars the way we do. There is no moral equivalency between our idea of limited war and this savage desert mentality. In the Old Testament we read of kings sacrificing their sons in a burnt holocaust on the city wall to try to win a battle. That is exactly what Hamas is doing here.
JoseQuinones on July 25, 2014 at 10:06 AM
I have an acquaintance who was surprised when I told her that Palestinians have been shooting rockets to Israel for some time.
She told me she never heard of that. If that was true, why didn’t she hear it on the news?
She is very upset at the way Israel keeps attacking the people in Gaza
I offered to print news reports from a paper of her choice, but the response was such I realized she wouldn’t believe what I printed
Here is the power of propaganda. If the entire spectrum of free media holds to a uniform story, their viewership would have to accept that their entire world was fake. Their security blanket goes up in smoke. Dealing with that reality is terrifying. This is where people ostrich.
Understand this and you understand Hitler. He owned the press. The parts he did not own, were taken care of. His press made people feel good about the direction of their world.
My friend acted like I was a unibomber. I believe I have lost her trust. It was trust me, or distrust the entire known world.
Now, if Andrea Mitchell or even Oprah, took the camera to denounce the rocketing of Israel, my acquaintance would believe. She cannot accept that everyone on every channel would share the same lie of omission.
She does not use the internet
