Never the commander-in-chief

posted at 9:21 am on July 22, 2014 by Noah Rothman

As the world burns, President Barack Obama decided that an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live amid a three-day fundraiser swing down the West Coast would be a touch too gauche.

“In advance of the trip, we’ve been in touch with Kimmel’s folks about the president doing his show,” said White House Press Sec. Josh Earnest on Monday. “We elected not to do it this time, but hope we can arrange to do it in the near future.”

What a generous display of regard for what the media has been reminding the president all month are the “optics” associated with serving as the nation’s chief executive. But there is a downside associated with this decision. It robs the press of once again dubbing Obama America’s “entertainer-in-chief.”

That was a moniker that Obama received after one of this many appearances on pop television programs ranging from Myth Busters to David Letterman. And, yes, it was a compliment.

“Bush for the most part failed as an entertainer-in-chief,” observed Slate’s Troy Patterson in 2010. “This is not blameworthy, but it is noteworthy. This is America, pal, and our business is show business.”

“In the past, presidents were reluctant to appear on late-night shows because they felt it lowered the stature of the office,” US News’ Kenneth Walsh wrote in the heat of the 2012 reelection campaign. How times have changed.

The president is, however, doing some good work on the road. In one stop, Obama spoke before an audience of African-Americans where he addressed what he considered the deleterious issue of how some in the black community deride others for “acting white.” Obama added that this peer pressure designed to enforce behavioral norms in the black community “has to go.”

Amid this exercise in cultural criticism, CBS This Morning christened the president America’s “mentor-in-chief.”

The president is, however, cognizant of the fact that 300 civilians were recently killed in a brazen attack by pro-Russian separatists using Russian military hardware in Ukraine. He has been periodically addressing the situation since that July 17 attack by demanding a full and thorough investigation take place. It is hard to blame him for failing to acknowledge that the rebels on the ground repeatedly and wantonly ignored his warnings not to disturb the crash site. What president would want to acknowledge his own irrelevance?

But, on a series of occasions, the president did speak in soft, reassuring tones about the nature of the attack and the grave wound it dealt those who lost loved ones. For this pageantry, as CNN’s Jim Acosta determined that Obama had reprised his role as America’s “comforter-in-chief.”

So rarely does the press determine that Obama has embraced his role as the country’s commander-in-chief. While foreign crises explode in Gaza and Ukraine, as China tests its boundaries in the Pacific, while an Islamic caliphate and terrorist safe haven grows more firmly established in Syria and Iraq, America’s commander of the armed forces is nowhere to be seen.

The press does the president no favors by inventing a variety of catchy phrases aimed at creating the impression that the president is engaged in his responsibilities. All that strained cleverness merely serves to emphasize the fact that Obama has abdicated his constitutionally defined role.

The president can, however, take solace in one nickname that he has not yet earned. While Obama has attended more than 393 fundraising events over the course of his presidency, he lags far behind Bill Clinton as the president who fundraised the most while in office.

“By this point in his second term, Clinton had hosted 127 fundraisers,” The Washington Post‘s Sebastian Payne reported last week, “meaning Obama has a ways to go to take the title as fundraiser-in-chief.”

Well, something to shoot for at least, right? We all need goals.

Yeah, he spouted the same platitudes 10 years ago at the DNC Convention. Has he or his administration done anything about that since 2009?

I remember when Ronald Reagan first came to office. The press conferences where a bunch of reporters jumping up and yelling their questions as loudly as they could and it had a real carnival or Wall Street pit atmosphere. One of his first acts was to tell them to sit down, shut up and raise their hands and he would call on them. It restored some dignity to the office and process. (One of the reasons the press immediately hated him!!) Of course Obama never has “real” press conferences ever since his handlers found out he couldn’t think without a teleprompter, but he has done everything else possible to eliminate any stature that used to exist in being president of the most powerful nation on earth. MORON!!

Deano1952 on July 22, 2014 at 9:51 AM

Bill Cosby’s been savaged over the years by black activists for hammering on the cultural pressures not to ‘act white’ in valuing education. But he kept stressing that point, despite the attacks he received from other liberals. Obama tends to do hit-and-runs on the topic, but with far more power to enact change, never pushes the issue or keeps it at the forefront long enough to actually start a national debate on the problem…

…which kind of goes with Obama’s foreign policy woes, in that he never takes on an issue where he can’t find someplace or someone else to deflect the blame if things go wrong. In domestic policy, it’s easy to take an issue and simply say it’s the Republicans’ fault, or in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan, blame any current trouble on mistakes by Bush. You can’t do that in the Ukraine, where Team Obama truly thought Putin and other world leaders would love America once Chimpy McBusHitlerBurton was out of office.

He’s not going to lead pro-actively and is almost begging Putin to round up a few suspects, charge them with shooting down the Malaysian airliner, and then hold a show trial and convict them so Obama doesn’t have to deal with the issue and the White House can say it’s old news.

NO ONE, not even the richest people in the world SPEND $1.4 billion a year on that.

The use of Air Force One should be restricted to official functions ONLY. If he wants to jet off to a fundraiser then the fundraiser needs to reimburse the taxpayer the actual cost of the trip.

Bill Clinton 167 + 471 = 638
Barack Obama 310 + 83 = 393 (and counting / 2 yrs to go)

That was 32 YEARS ago. Everything took longer to happen back then. The time it took Reagan and Oblahblah to say something about it, isn’t the issue.

The SUBSTANCE of what they said, IS the issue.

So not only do you inject Reagan into an post that didn’t mention him and has nothing to do with him, but you inaccurately portray Noah not “studying what actually happened” and instead getting his inf from Fox. First Family believed to be in escrow…

— Drudge

Does that mean that Soros is selling them?

I wonder who would pay money for such shoddy goods?

They shouldn’t be in escrow. They should be in prison, or in Hell.

The good news is he has yet to show up on Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

“Bush for the most part failed as an entertainer-in-chief,”

The same could be said of Washington and Lincoln.

That hit the funny bone just right. Thanks for the chuckle.

I am sure they have to haul the BEAST,,, isn’t that what they call the presidential limo? The armored Cadillac. When they haul that car around to all of these fundraisers brings the cost of fundraising to extreme. After golf I think this is the presidents favorite pastime.

garydt on July 22, 2014 at 12:24 PM

Not doing Kimmel? It obviously interfered with his planned golf round in L.A., since that show is taped in the afternoon.

MTF on July 22, 2014 at 9:30 AM

Yeah, they should change the name, since it hasn’t been a live show in quite some time. I remember how the show used to start, with Kimmel walking down the sidewalk and into the El Capitan theater, with a live camera following him in. Now it’s no different from the other late shows.

That was his white half talking. Stupid cracker.

Putin is the luckiest bastard on Earth.

He rules in the age of obama.

127 appears to be a typo and appears nowhere in the source data.

IndieDogg on July 22, 2014 at 10:40 AM

You sure Noah wasn’t channeling George Carlin’s partial score bit or something? Because a typo would be so unusual.

He is RIP- Retired-In-Place.

DAT60A3 on July 22, 2014 at 9:41 AM

So that makes him a RIP-REB.

slickwillie2001 on July 22, 2014 at 1:03 PM

He’s “semi-retired”.

kingsjester on July 22, 2014 at 10:05 AM

Actually not that unusual in the federal bureaucracy.

slickwillie2001 on July 22, 2014 at 1:04 PM

This mess sure is going to be difficult to clean up…

God help us. He is an evil man.

emory557 on July 22, 2014 at 1:55 PM

The look on his face tells that he’s assessing the crowd to try to determine how many actually still believe his horseshiite.

And judging by the folks in the background, not many. Note the Asian girl, in the typical elder-respecting manner, rolling her eyes with the lids closed.
