FAA orders 24-hour moratorium on US to Tel Aviv over missile worries

posted at 3:21 pm on July 22, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Originally, this started as voluntary actions by Delta and US Air to suspend their operations at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. A Hamas missile landed within a mile of Israel’s main airport — one I’ve traveled through three times — emphasizing the expansion of range in Hamas’ artillery from Gaza. At first, the FAA stayed silent on the change:

It didn’t take long for the situation to change, though:

The Federal Aviation Administration is telling U.S. airlines they are prohibited from flying to the Tel Aviv airport in Israel after a Hamas rocket exploded nearby.

The FAA said in a statement that the ban on flights is for 24 hours beginning at 12:15 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

The notice to airmen was issued “in response to a rocket strike which landed approximately one mile from Ben Gurion International Airport,” the FAA said in a statement.

It’s not just the Americans, either:

Israel’s Transportation Ministry called on the FAA and other carriers to change their minds:

Israel’s Transportation Ministry called on the airlines to reverse their decision and said it was trying to explain that the airport was “safe for landings and departures.”

“Ben-Gurion Airport is safe and completely guarded and there is no reason whatsoever that American companies would stop their flights and hand terror a prize,” it said in a statement.

The FAA had warned American carriers not to fly over eastern Ukraine several weeks ago, a warning whose wisdom was made all too apparent last week. This isn’t the same issue, though. If Hamas had surface-to-air missiles that could hit airplanes in flight, they’d already have targeted El Al flights coming in and out of Tel Aviv. The ban in this case is more about the unfortunate circumstance of operating in a war zone when one side launches attacks indiscriminately targeting civilians, as opposed to the IDF, which is trying to target Hamas while it hides among civilians.

The time frame of 24 hours is rather interesting, too. Perhaps the FAA expects the war to be over by that time, in which case they’re among the most optimistic of all observers. The Israelis will want to make some adjustments or expansion to their Iron Dome defense system in and around Tel Aviv to restore confidence in flight security, and surely the FAA is in communication with Israel about those improvements and the time frame in which they can judge their effect.

That’s just the FAA, though. Even if they give the green light for a resumption of flights for US carriers, that doesn’t mean that the carriers themselves will jump immediately back into business at Ben Gurion.

One other interesting development took place in Egypt, where John Kerry met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President al-Sisi to push a cease-fire agreement. According to CBS News (same link as above), Ban then went to Israel, but apparently Kerry did not:

Egypt, Israel and the U.S. back an unconditional cease-fire, to be followed by talks on a possible new border arrangement for Gaza. Israel and Egypt have severely restricted movement in and out of Gaza since Hamas seized the territory in 2007.

In Cairo, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met Egyptian officials Tuesday in the highest-level push yet to end the deadly conflict. Ban then traveled to Israel.

Earlier, former Israeli ambassador Michael Oren told an interviewer on Israeli television that the Netanyahu government had “not invited” Kerry to engage on a cease fire. For the moment, at least, he’s not looking to raise his profile in Jerusalem.

Yeah, Israel stomping Hamas into dust isn’t making Preezy HUSSEIN any happier than recent court rulings curtailing his Royal PenNPhone.

This is a backdoor sanction meant to harm Israel and to try to get them to play ball with Kerry, whom they DO NOT WANT in their country right now.

No plane was threatened by this Hamas bottle rocket, and they do not have the capability of attacking airliners like the Russians do.

The rockets Hamas have aren’t precision guided munitions like the SA-11.

They are terror weapons, barely guided stovepipes filled with explosives.

Well, since Kerry has just landed in Egypt and since there is no security justification for this, Occam’s Razor suggest only one true reason: the US gov. has committed a terrorist act in a form of taking Israel’s economy hostage in order to submit it to Kerry’s ceasefire.

The time frame of 24 hours is rather interesting, too. Perhaps the FAA expects the war to be over by that time, in which case they’re among the most optimistic of all observers.

The FAA is just carrying out Barky’s policy to attack and isolate Israel. Plain and simple. This has nothing to do with missiles or safety or anything of the like – as if the Israelis wouldn’t shut the airport, themselves, if they thought that planes were in danger …

Just like Barky’s State department issuing a travel advisory for Israel … Barky and the left attacking Israel. Watch for this all to continue and linger on for a very long time as the left has found another way to assault Israel, while they help Hamas and the PA …

Masih ad-Dajjal on July 22, 2014 at 4:10 PM

There are similarities.
Tell, John F’ing Kerry to quit telling his fanaticized Swift Boat tales.
If I may reminisce about ROE’s … Rules of Engagement are generated every moment in combat, by very young men who carry rifles, and they are scared. Let them do what they have to do to survive. It is foolish to make them consider RULES, it might get them killed. The side with the better line officers and NCO’s will win. Every Time.
But Hamas is getting its ass handed to them and to the IDF, I say Get-eR-Done.

I am amazed that ‘governments’ loan, give, or supply military grade weapons to crazies.
For instance, why does Putin give crew served theater SAM systems to the crazies in Ukraine?
What MORONIC MENTAL MIDGET would give custody and CONTROL of a SA-11 systems to a bunch of crazies WHO ARE NOT IN YOUR DIRECT CHAIN OF COMMAND? Who could be so STUPID and irresponsible? To paraphrase J.P. O’Rourk … It’s like giving whisky and corvette keys to your children. Nothing good could ever come of such a stupid action. NOTHING!
The same charge can be leveled at the Syrians and the Iranians. They supply military grade weapons to HAMAS and Hezbollah … right?
Rule Number One of Military Grade Weapons: DO NOT GIVE THEM TO ANYONE NOT IN YOUR DIRECT AND RESPONSIVE CHAIN OF COMMAND.
Get it?

The airport is protected by Iron Dome. In fact, all of the Tel Aviv area is protected, and every Hamas rocket is met by two Iron Dome missiles, to ensure they don’t hit the most populated region in Israel.

Your level of delusion is reaching Russian level here. If you think California and New York have anything in common with North Korea you have lost it.

and good luck being a catholic in Israel. I hope you have a good time before the inevitable turning of Israel into a Hebrew version Saudi Arabia sets in.

coolrepublica on July 22, 2014 at 3:43 PM

17% of Israel’s population is made up of Arab Muslims, you moron. There have been Arab members of Israel’s version of Congress since 1949. If Arab Muslims can live in Israel in peace what makes you think they have a problem with Catholics?

slickwillie2001 on July 22, 2014 at 4:50 PM

This is pure anti-Israel intimidation. It has the effect of sanctions on Israel.

Obama should hang – after a fair and impartial trial, of course.

They can live where they are and let the Palestinians have their state in the west Bank and Gaza. I am not looking for pre-1967 borders here. I want them to give others a chance to have a life too. The Palestinians would take that offer in a New York minute. But Israel is dead set on taking it all.

Rather than letting them live where they are, Fatah and the PA have been active for the last decade making Judea and Samaria Judenrein.

It’s not Israel that has as part of their constitution the destruction of the Palestinians, yet for the PA / Fatah, Hamas, Hizbollah, the destruction of Israel is one of their main pillars. Just as Hamas has declined the offers for ceasefires as they continue to fire dozens / hundreds missiles per day into Israeli villages, towns, and cities trying to kill as many civilians as possible.

One side wants peace and has traded land for peace / made peace with two neighbors – the other side uses human shields, advocates the destruction of a state, embraces and encourages terrorism, and fires dozens / hundreds of missiles in an indiscriminate targeting of civilians.

Athos on July 22, 2014 at 5:23 PM

My husband is a pilot who flies there regularly, last week in fact, so I hope his company will follow suit. One of his friends had to take cover at the airport when missiles were coming in the day before he went. He was there last year when the sirens went off for the first time in years. He says about half of the people in Tel Aviv panic when the sirens go off, and half don’t react. I pay more attention than most people to these news stories!

The radical Islamist will never accept any deal from Israel, no matter what it is because the goal isn’t a Palestinian state.

The goal is to keep Palestinians where they are to use as an excuse to keep attacking Israel. The goal is the destruction of Israel and has nothing to do with “Palestine”.

Go back and look at past accords and see how much Israel has offered. It doesn’t matter if Israel gives in to every demand, it will never be accepted.

Use your head instead of reading leftist (Islamist) propaganda.

At Oslo, the Israelis gave Arafat basically everything he wanted, and he turned them down. The Palis want all of Israel, and there’s plenty of evidence for that. Don’t listen to what the Arabs say to the West in English; instead, read what they say to their own people, in Arabic. MEMRI is a great resource for just that.

Sooooo….Obama thinks that Hamas is or will be targeting international aircraft?

albill on July 22, 2014 at 5:57 PM

Hamas wouldn’t have to fire a missile; they’d just have to fly a drone into an aircraft taking off. But that’s assuming the IDF’s Iron Dome didn’t take out the drone first.

Ward Cleaver on July 22, 2014 at 6:05 PM

And if Hamas does shoot down an international airliner will the US join Israel in the war against Hamas?

Del Dolemonte on July 22, 2014 at 6:10 PM

Without continuing the conflict with Israel, the PA / Fatah / Hamas would be in major trouble.

Rather than being indoctrinated to hate the Jew / Israel, the people would see that the Arabs in Israel have more rights and freedom than not only they do, but all of the Arabs in the region.

The ‘Palestinians’ would see that their leaders are massively corrupt fascist dictators who pocket the vast majority of the aid / assistance that comes into the region from the UN, the EU, and the US.

Without a continuous war against Israel, funding from the UN, the EU, and the US would drop – lessening what the corruptocrats could skim and place in their Swiss and French bank accounts.

Learning that their leaders are fascist corruptocrats, the people would vent their anger not towards Israel, but those corruptocrats.

It’s not in the interest of the leaders of the PA, Fatah, Hamas, or Hizbollah to make peace with Israel. Making peace with Israel would end their power and the source of their wealth.

That’s what we need to fix in order to bring peace to the region. But having the current Administration recognize both Fatah and Hamas as legitimate leaders of the region only perpetuates the conflict.

Athos on July 22, 2014 at 6:28 PM

ConstantineXI on July 22, 2014 at 4:49 PM

That’s how it’s supposed to work, but this time the rocket hit a house. It still seems ridiculous to me, because it doesn’t really matter whether Iron Dome worked or not. Iron Dome shoots down the rocket when it gets close to the target. Several times Israel closed down its airspace (or parts of it), and planes are being diverted to a northerly route.

The fact that a rocket wasn’t shot down by Iron Dome doesn’t really change anything.

So what changed? Kerry got to Egypt and discovered he can’t force Israel, Hamas and Egypt to accept an immediate ceasefire (aka, unconditional surrender from Israel).

The Qassam rockets are very different from the missile that shot that jetliner down. The Qassam-1 is a joke (about the size of a large hobbyist rocket you might shoot off in the desert for fun, minus the 5kg “warhead”), the higher-end models are bit more scary, but still. A Q-1 may not even be able to take down a jet.
