UN agency returns rockets to Hamas

posted at 11:01 am on July 20, 2014 by Jazz Shaw

I’ve really made an effort over the years to continue to try to find something nice to say about the United Nations, since I still believe that a properly run, responsibly directed international body could accomplish a lot of good in the world. But when you read stories like this one, it’s pretty difficult to maintain a sunny outlook.

United Nations agency that last week found rockets in a Gaza school operating under its auspices has handed that weaponry over to Hamas, Israeli officials said Sunday, accusing the organization of actively helping the terrorist organization potentially attack Israeli civilians.

“The rockets were passed on to the government authorities in Gaza, which is Hamas. In other words, UNRWA handed to Hamas rockets that could well be shot at Israel,” a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel.

A different senior official said UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, charged with overseeing humanitarian efforts in Gaza, has been suffering from “battered-wife syndrome” for years and currently “attempts to ingratiate itself with Hamas.”

According to the UNRWA spokesman reached for comment, it’s apparently a long standing policy to refer matters of incidents involving unexploded ordnance which might endanger beneficiaries and staff to the local authorities. And in most cases, that’s probably a fine policy. But in this case there seem to be two glaring problems. First of all, the phrase unexploded ordinance is, I’m sure, generally used to describe cases where civilians find a bomb in a field someplace which didn’t detonate on impact or some land mines left over from a previous conflict. And in most countries, contacting the local government is probably a good first step. But these are stockpiled rockets which are waiting to be fired, not rusted out World War II shells. I don’t think these are the sorts of weapons which an “unexploded ordnance” policy was meant to cover.

Second, the “local government” in most cases is, I would imagine, a neutral body looking to secure the safety of their citizens and work with such an international agency. One might suppose that any UNRWA workers who are on the ground in Gaza are familiar with Hamas and would realize that they were essentially fueling another round of the attacks which we’re all ostensibly seeking to shut down, wouldn’t they?

Double Face Palm material.

If that body includes dictatorships, mideast monarchies, and tinpot “democracies” then it’s never going to happen.

Time to yank from the U.N. and form our own league comprised of nations whose people really are democratic, bolstered by a requirement to have an effective, functioning military, and with the overall league credo being “You mess with one, you mess with all.”

Just to be clear, UNRWA is the UN agency responsible for helping Palestinian refugees. Their definition of refugees includes not only the people who fled their homes as a result of the 1948 war, but also their descendants. Hence, UNRWA is basically in business forever.

By contrast, all the other non-Palestinian refugees in the world are aided by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. The UNCHR’s definition of refugees includes only people who personally had to leave their own countries due to fear of persecution — but not their descendants.

Hence, Palestinians are the only people in the world who are allowed to be classified as refugees for more than one generation (and, until the UN says otherwise, infinite generations).

I don’t understand why such an organization hasn’t been formed yet. I realize that the people at the State Department and their foreign counterparts are reluctant to abandon the UN, but they don’t need to quit the UN to form an organization of the “good guy” countries. Far better, while maintaining UN membership for show, to form the organization of the good guys and let it make the UN irrelevant.

Third, they found the “unexploded ordinance” in a school, run by the UNRWA! Storing ordinance in a building that served as a school that is also a structure run by a (purportedly) neutral, international diplomatic organization, is a double war crime.

Even if the authorities weren’t the ones firing the ordinance into civilian areas of Israel (another war crime), it still should not have been turned over to them. The rockets should have been defused and removed by official UN experts in both safe removal of “unexploded ordinance” AND prosecution of war crimes, and a report provided to the Security Council.

As an attorney, UNWRA’s action were not only foolish and unacceptably partisan, but amounted to the destruction of evidence and accessory to war crimes!

The Golani Brigade was established on February 28, 1948, when the Levanoni Brigade was dismantled into two – the Golani Brigade (to defend the northeastern region) and the Carmeli Brigade (to defend the northwestern region).

The brigade has played a key role in all of Israel’s wars.

The brigade is composed of three battalions and a reconnaissance battalion.

You have to remember that the Palestinians have a slightly different concept of what constitutes a proper education than we do.

The reality is that the educational curriculum in the Palestinian schools centers around hating Jews and encouraging their students to want to kill Jews. With this in mind, having rockets stored on school property becomes much less surprising.

Everybody knows that an education is much more effective if you give hands-on training. Those rockets were just training aids.

Saying “we’re going to have an organization that represents all the nations of the world” sounds great on paper, but then you end up with Russia having a veto on security matters and China being on the human rights committee.

How much money does the US taxpayer give the UN each year?

Long past time to stop.

The UN is a joke. Time to leave the UN.

CW on July 20, 2014 at 11:07 AM

Or better … force them out of the U.S. Assuming that NYC identifies much closer with the UN than with the U.S., they should begin plans to secede as a people. Leave the land and fixtures and get out.

Jaibones on July 20, 2014 at 2:00 PM

Thank God (Allah?) the UN found ‘em before the kids did.

listens2glenn on July 20, 2014 at 2:01 PM

Well I’ll be damned…

And then Hama put them back in the UN school….

We need to boot the UN off of our land & form a League of Free Nations instead.
Why invite thugocracies like China, Russia, NK, or Iran into any group?

Shump on July 20, 2014 at 1:48 PM

For some idiotic reason (ask FDR), the USSR was allowed on the Security Council.
For decades we saw what an EPIC FAIL that was.
Then, when the USSR disbanded, we allowed a different country–Russia–to take the USSR’s place.
WHY?
For some idiotic reason.

The United Nations is long past its useful shelf life. I can’t think of a single contribution they’ve made to the betterment of mankind in many years.

The UN leadership is chock full of anti-semites and a largely anti-American contingent. They have corrupted the core mission and use nepotism to drive destructive agenda’s in just about every single agency.

America has done a much better job of keeping world peace and proliferating charity. Oddly, that’s being done without doing things like storing missiles in children’s facilities and feigning surprise when they are discovered.

Think about it. These are large missiles. It’s not like someone put them inadvertently under the bathroom sink.

Its the epitome as to why the UN is a useless and corrupt organization.

Her’s an idea: how about we remain an exceptional nation. Because it seems to me we where a better world when American leaders felt that way.

Marcus Traianus on July 20, 2014 at 5:07 PM

The UN is no more useful than the League of Nations and far more dangerous.

It is a treaty organization.

If you want out of the UN then you need either:
- A President who will just rip up the treaty and say it is over

or

- A Senate that will vote against the treaty

It takes both the President and the Senate to create a treaty and by a President able to unilaterally leave the ABM Treaty then the result is that either the President or the Senate can walk away from a treaty.

You won’t get Progressive Republican Elites in the Senate to vote against the UN because Progressives love ever larger organizations with less accountability to them and THAT is the UN.

That leaves a President. Good luck on that one.

.
That’s why they’re replacing it with an even MORE dangerous organization.

Sounds like they need some strict “no guns” policies over there. Expel the students.

BobMbx on July 21, 2014 at 8:59 AM

As long as a majority of nations are dishonest humans are sinful, this is an impossibility.

Improved it for ya.

You have to admit, that was a pretty smart place for hamas to store those rockets.

Oh, sure, Israel might attack a school or hospital where rockets are launching, but I bet they think twice about attacking a KNOWN UN site. And by their own rules, the UN has to hand the rockets back to hamas. Brilliant really.

Time for Israel to start attacking the UN in gaza. They’re obviously part of the problem.
