Hillary’s pollyanna foreign policy

posted at 9:21 am on July 18, 2014 by Jazz Shaw

Each new crisis around the world, including the scab scraping problems in Ukraine following this week’s plane downing, seem to demonstrate that foreign policy will be a much bigger factor in the next presidential election than I’d once imagined. Americans will still focus on a host of domestic issues, but it’s impossible to ignore the deteriorating state of affairs around the globe and America’s place on that larger stage. This made it all the more curious to examine Hillary Clinton’s statements about American foreign policy given on, of all places, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Setting jokes aside for a moment, Stewart asked Hillary, what is our foreign policy anymore? Her answer was remarkable for its lack of depth.

What I found when I became secretary of state is that so many people in the world—especially young people—they had no memory of the United States liberating Europe and Asia, beating the Nazis, fighting the Cold War and winning, that was just ancient history. They didn’t know the sacrifices that we had made and the values that motivated us to do it. We have not been telling our story very well. We do have a great story. We are not perfect by any means, but we have a great story about human freedom, human rights, human opportunity, and let’s get back to telling it, to ourselves first and foremost, and believing it about ourselves and then taking that around the world. That’s what we should be standing for.

Peter Beinart at The Atlantic first brought this to my attention, and he found the former Secretary of State’s response lacking, though for different reasons than I did.

As a vision for America’s relations with the world, this isn’t just unconvincing. It’s downright disturbing. It’s true that young people overseas don’t remember the Cold War. But even if they did, they still wouldn’t be inspired by America’s “great story about [promoting] human freedom, human rights, human opportunity.” That’s because in the developing world—where most of humanity lives—barely anyone believes that American foreign policy during the Cold War actually promoted those things. What they mostly remember is that in anticommunism’s name, from Pakistan to Guatemala to Iran to Congo, America funded dictators and fueled civil wars.

I’m not going to debate Beinart as to how people in various parts of the world view the United States and our history of foreign involvement. There are as many answers to that question as there are nations. But this pollyannaish view that our major shortcoming is our failure to tell our story well enough just smacks of the Obama Doctrine. Everybody will like us if we just sufficiently explain why we’re so darned likeable!

The world is what it is, and there are, sadly, as many evil actors out there as there are noble people deserving of our help. If you want to lead this nation, what I believe we are looking for is someone who can articulate precisely what our goals are, where our resources can best be put to use and where we need to keep a hands off position. A real leader should be able to articulate how we are defining who our friends are and who we must be ready to move against, as well as the circumstances under which such action would be undertaken. And most importantly – in terms of communications – they will need to able to let the rest of world, friend and foe alike, know what they can expect from us both as ally and enemy, and be ready to deliver on those expectations.

Hillary Clinton’s answer was a clear demonstration of the opposite. This is not an advertising campaign to be managed by a smooth spokesperson. We’re talking about the responsibilities of the sole remaining superpower on the planet and how those challenges will be met. Home team cheerleading is not any sort of basis for foreign policy.

Hildabeast’s foreign policy ideas don’t matter.

I wish you were right, but whom will they nominate otherwise – Sheriff Joe? Fauxahontas is as popular as toe fungus anywhere outside Commiecticut and Taxachusetts, Booker is an Obama clone and will inherit his full negatives, and O’Malley and Cuomo lack money, birth canal and star power. So the press will have to work overtime to explain why leaving no White House intern unfertilized is so damn important to the nation.

Hillary’s foreign policy ideas are exactly what you’d expect from any random stupid woman on the streets
(remember; before women got the right to vote, suffragettes insisted it would mean the end to all wars because women would no longer allow it. Yeah, that stupid)
What’s remarkable is that after having been exposed to politics and diplomacy at the highest levels, she is still unable to rise any extent above her inadequacy in any perceptible way.

But then again: 21st Century Democrat with a cogent foreign policy is as easy to find as a 9-year-old with a workable plan in place for financing college.

But don’t worry, Jazz- Hillary isn’t black OR gay (yet), and she won’t be the nominee.

The Dems will not voluntarily give up the power of the Race Shield.

We’ve already seen it. Think secret information transferred to Red China, shady financial deals, ignoring OBL until it was way too late, and sitting up nights trying to come up with a way to erase Israel from the map.

You didn’t think Bill was responsible for all that, did you? All he cared about was interns, and that was about what he was adapted for mentally. (Still is, for that matter.)

Senator Iselin just says whatever Mrs. Iselin tells him to.

Dolce Far Niente on July 18, 2014 at 9:39 AM

I think they’ll consider giving it a breather and using the Gender Shield for awhile instead, but I do suspect they’ll wind up going with someone like Castro so they can milk the race angle (especially ‘latino’ – its the new black!) another round or two.

They could go for both, though – Clinton/Castro has a certain ring to it – no one could oppose it for any reason without having both Race and Gender Shields activated.

A real leader should be able to articulate how we are defining who our friends are and who we must be ready to move against, as well as the circumstances under which such action would be undertaken.

The point is Barack Obama, Hillary & Bill Clinton have to right to take credit for “the good old days.” The legacy of America’s “great foreign policy has been squandered by all three of them. Mrs. Clinton has no right to own her Pollyanna vision of foreign policy. She had no problem becoming Secretary of State and take orders from the most anti-American president since Jimmy Carter.

“Castro” is about as popular a last name in Florida as genital herpes. I foresee a lot of beard-themed graphic material on the ‘webs if he’s so much as mentioned as a VP. I’m sure Dems can find a token Latino without giving the opposition such an easy bait.

The upcoming food fight will be worth watching if Killary decides she wants to run for President (my prediction is she wants to raise as much cash before heading the door). If she really runs for office, she’ll have to disavow any of the foreign policy failures that occurred on her watch or were a result of her fecklessness. That puts her at odds with the rat-eared wonder who is planning on making her and Kerry the scapegoat.

We are not perfect by any means

The reflexive need of every leftist to add this qualifier any time they dare to offer praise of their own country/culture is long-past tiresome. It’s the same strawman crap that Obama works in like Rembrandt. “There are those who say America is the embodiment of pre-sin Eden, while there are others who say that if Earth got an enema, we should stick the hose in the USA. I, on the other hand, have a more measured, nuanced view of our history.”

KGB on July 18, 2014 at 10:41 AM

If Killery were smart (hah!), she’d pass the 2016 election and shoot for 2020. Her bet would be that a donk in the white house in 2016 would be slim versus, at minimum, a somewhat viable GOP opponent.

Let the GOP take the heat for the first term, and as the 5th column treasonous media (I stole it, I know…) whittles the executive branch for, well, d@mned near anything that remotely resembles a war-against-wimmen/anti-gay/anti-abortion/racist/just-like-BOOOOSH! conspiracy, she can run in 2020 and have a chance to win.

But Progressives don’t think that way… it makes too much sense.

jhffmn on July 18, 2014 at 11:04 AM

Hillary and Obama are not about resting on their laurels. They are all about resting on other people’s laurels. It is not that young people don’t know all that stuff about what the US did (whether good or bad), it is more about what we are doing today, or not doing.

The people of the world are justifiably asking, “What have you done for me lately?” The answer is a resounding “Not much.” US voters need to take a serious look at the state of the union and ask the same kinds of questions. The US Government under the Obama administration has been a lot more about controlling and taking rather than liberating and giving. They have talked a lot about doing the latter, but the results have been a lot of the former.

I’ve never been a big fan of Bill, but comparing Bill and Hillary, it is abundantly clear why Bill was the leading politician in the family. He understands stuff about the US and the world at large that seems to be intellectually unattainable for Hillary.

1. I think your nuts if you think Romney or McCain could manage to beat Hillary.

2. I’m hard pressed to believe there would be any significant difference between a H. Clinton administration, a Romney administration or a McCain administration – all just a matter of degrees but all lean liberal.

I note that what’s really missing from this discussion is any mention of a currently strong fiscally conservative / small government candidate – we haven’t seen one in decades from either party.
