Former NY Times editor Jill Abramson confirms to Fox Obama admin ‘most secretive’

posted at 8:41 am on July 17, 2014 by Noah Rothman

No doubt, former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson is disgruntled. You get that impression from her insistence that she be called “fired New York Times editor” rather than “former.” And, in her prior capacity, you would never have seen her appear on Fox News Channel to criticize President Barack Obama’s administration.

Nevertheless, speaking in her current capacity – an unencumbered professional journalist with nearly 40 years’ experience and no political axe to grind save for the one reserved for her former employers at the Times – Abramson and Fox News Channel’s Greta Van Susteren confirming that Obama’s is “the most secretive” administration in generations is significant.

“I’ve never dealt with an administration where more officials, some of whom are actually paid to be the spokesman for various federal agencies, demand that everything be off the record,” Abramson said. “But the most serious thing is the Obama administration has launched eight criminal leak investigations against sources and whistleblowers, and they’ve tried to sweep in journalists.

She added that there has been a “freeze” among journalists, specifically those covering Washington D.C. and national security.

That is a sentiment shared by a variety of reporters and photojournalists – the Society of Professional Journalists recently accused the administration of “censorship” in the service of political goals, though that accusation did not get the coverage it should have.

Abramson’s is a particularly galling assessment, considering that this White House promised to be the “most transparent” in history and still maintains that it is. White House Press Sec. Josh Earnest repeated this laughable claim as recently as this week.

Her indictment is, though, most damning due to the fact that so many professional journalists have abandoned their profession in order to join this “most secretive” administration. As of September of last year, at least 15 former reporters from influential outlets like ABC, NBC, Time magazine, and The Washington Post had taken up roles working with or flacking for various federal agencies.

If this administration is the most secretive in modern history, it does not have to worry about much oversight from many ideologically simpatico members of the press corps. If the means do not justify the ends, after all, what does?

Of course the Obama Regime is secretive. If they didn’t hide their crimes they’d have been strung up by now.

Gee, maybe if we had a press that was interested in holding this administration accountable, we might not be in this mess. And yes, if the networks, papers, and magazines were united in this effort, the regime would have to back down from being so secretive and hostile towards leakers and whistleblowers.

Obama believes in his own mind that he is the smartest man ever to walk the face of the Earth, and that the people are too stupid to realize what he’s doing.

Unfortunately, looking at the election results, he’s not completely wrong. About the People being stupid that is. I’ve flushed more intelligence down the toilet than Obama has.

So first question, why could she not be so truthful when she was employed by the cage lining production corporation called the NYT? That was her job as a journalist, correct?

DaveDief on July 17, 2014 at 9:01 AM

Its the journalist-turned-flack that I find disturbing. Journos bought off at what price?
It may be now and in the near future the only source of reliable, vetted facts will come from leakers and whistleblowers who put their livelihoods (and possibly themselves) at risk. An example of that policy is the whistleblowers at the V.A. Retribution there is swift and ugly.
It smells like the fascist liberal’s win-by-any-means method.

OK, so one high profile journalist confirms what we knew all along… so now what?

ExpressoBold on July 17, 2014 at 9:19 AM

Above all else, I blame the media and people like Jill for our situation. At some point they stopped being impartial journalists and became the cheer-leading arm of this administration. All because they agreed with their politics.

I think it’s shameful and insulting for many in the media to now claim they were “just trying to do their job”. Nonsense. There is more than enough evidence since the beginning of Mr. Obama’s run for the presidency to prove otherwise. That starts with the fawning over his race and deflection from his applicable experience.

No matter what the gender, political party or philosophy a candidate possesses, we had come to expect, and a few still expect, an impartial review by the press of how someone may perform as president. What is their experience? How does that make them the best candidate? What are their fundamental beliefs and guideposts? How, in a material way, will they carry that out? How good are they at leading and bringing together our government to work for the American people? How consistent are their personal goals with that of the people?

By the way, those are questions for both parties candidates, not just one.

I suspect if the media had even the slightest interest in answering those questions we would not find ourselves in the dire circumstances of today. I also suspect they will continue this outrageous, dishonest, partial and ultimately dangerous behavior into the next election- irrespective of our tepid circumstances.

Ultimately, I believe the salad days of journalism have long since past. They are gone with concepts such as country over party, honesty over propaganda, Constitution and law over personal political predilections, and the media are primarily responsible for destroying them.

For that, they not only deserve our scorn, but some well-earned distrust and a very low level of respect.

Marcus Traianus on July 17, 2014 at 9:21 AM

The real story here is that she appeared on Fox. It used to be for a leftie to appear on Fox it had to be done with a wink and a smirk to signal to his/her cohorts that “I’m doing this ironically.” Now Woodward appears on Chris Wallace, the Times, AP, and other MSM outlets appear on Bret Baier, and guys like Howard Kurtz and John Roberts have hired in.

Fox is going mainstream, somewhat. And mainstream is going Fox.

That Jill Abramson is saying something the Right wants to hear, that she has been fired by Pinch, in no way mitigates what a giant piece of crap she is.

The probable reality here is that she’s toxic goods and currently unemployable in LSM venues, at least for a while. So here she is, selling a little bit of herself cheap on FNC … like the paid-for whore the vast majority of ‘journalist’s are.

I think it has more to do with the fact that if you could go on a local AM radio talk show in any decent sized city and get more exposure than CNN or MSLSD. FNC is the only cable news outlet that actually has an audience.

Hell, *I* used to be part of a local Saturday morning show on one of our AM talk stations and OUR audience was larger than some of the shows on CNN get… And this isn’t a large metro area.

Former NY Times editor Jill Abramson confirms to Fox Obama admin ‘most secretive’

JugEarsButtHurt on July 17, 2014 at 10:39 AM

at least 15 former reporters from influential outlets like ABC, NBC, Time magazine, and The Washington Post had taken up roles working with or flacking for various federal agencies.

Come on now, there are a lot more than 15 reporters working for the Obama administration, and we still see most of them on their broadcasts or read them in their papers every day.

Kevin71 on July 17, 2014 at 10:43 AM

This testimony by Abramson is not evidence that she has come to her senses, it’s evidence that the LSM in general is “over” Obama and is looking for their next toy. It’s like what happens in your office when everyone knows the boss is going to be laid off soon. Suddenly everyone from the receptionist to the department manager gets more “friendly” and will chat in the elevator about those things everyone knew all along and that whistleblowers got fired for talking about. They can no longer gain anything by sucking up to the boss, and they don’t pressure to keep their mouth shut about it either anymore. It means nothing. As soon as Billary or Warren or whoever officially joins the race, they will fall back into the seal of lockstep ideological silence.
