Breaking: Plane crash near Ukraine-Russia border, 295 on board

posted at 11:43 am on July 17, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

This looks very, very bad. Ukrainian officials say that a Malaysia Air commercial flight traveling near the Russian border has been shot down, with 295 people on board:

No other source has confirmed that the flight, which left Amsterdam earlier, was shot down as opposed to crashed for some other reason. Sky News reports that Malaysia Air has confirmed an “incident” in the area, though, so the crash itself appears to be real. It would be the second major crash for the airline this year, and this one might touch off a lot more than a so-far futile hemispheric search.

On Twitter, people were recalling the tensions following the KAL 007 shoot-down in 1983:

Reuters has more on this now:

The Boeing plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, it said. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.

The Interfax report said the plane came down 50 km (20 miles) short of entering Russian airspace. It “began to drop, afterwards it was found burning on the ground on Ukrainian territory,” the unnamed source said.

The plane appeared to have come down in a region of military action where Ukrainian government forces are battling pro-Russian separatists.

If this plane was shot down, this would mean an enormous escalation in the Ukraine-Russia crisis. It’s difficult to believe that either Ukraine or Russia would mistake a commercial flight at 10,000 meters, as Reuters reports it, as a hostile military flight — although that was the explanation offered for the KAL 007 shootdown and the US Navy’s shootdown of an Iranian commercial flight in the 1980s as well.  CNN’s expert wonders whether Malaysia Air’s communications got screwed up again and ended up flashing something other than its proper ID, but it seems a little more likely that if it got shot down — still not yet established — it would have been from forces not used to dealing with the distinction between the various kinds of flights.

Ukraine says that the missile was fired by separatists:

Assuming that it was shot down, of course, that would reflect back on Russia, which is supporting the separatists. CNN is now reporting that the Pentagon thinks that’s what happened on an earlier shootdown [corrected]:

CBS has live video coverage:

Obama has now been advised, according to both CBS and The Hill:

Update: Seems that Ukrainian separatists were bragging about taking a plane down about an hour before Malaysia Air plane went down:

If nothing else went missing, that may be a big hint.

Update: Ukraine says its military took no action on any aerial targets today:

That makes sense, as the pro-Russian separatists don’t have many air assets, if any at all. The rebels, though, have been firing on Ukrainian military aircraft, downing two this week.

And more:

Update: Good Lord — the debris field is seven miles wide, which certainly makes it more likely that it exploded in the air:

Update: CBS talked with “Sully” Sullenberger, who wondered why commercial flights took routes over Ukraine at all. The FAA has reminded people that they ordered US carriers months ago to avoid the region for overflights. It looks like other airlines have gotten the message today:

Update: The AP reports that a Buk missile system was seen in the area earlier today:

The Donetsk region government said Thursday’s plane crashed near a village called Grabovo, which it said is currently under the control of armed pro-Russian separatists. The region where the flight was lost has seen severe fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russia separatist rebels in recent days.

A launcher similar to the Buk missile system was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.

On Wednesday evening, a Ukrainian fighter jet was shot down by an air-to-air missile from a Russian plane, Ukrainian authorities said Thursday, adding to what Kiev says is mounting evidence that Moscow is directly supporting the separatist insurgents in eastern Ukraine. Security Council spokesman Andrei Lysenko said the pilot of the Sukhoi-25 jet hit by the air-to-air missile was forced to bail after his jet was shot down.

Pro-Russia rebels, meanwhile, claimed responsibility for strikes Wednesday on two Ukrainian Sukhoi-25 jets. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said the second jet was hit by a portable surface-to-air missile, but added the pilot was unscathed and managed to land his plane safely

Moscow denies Western charges that is supporting the separatists or sowing unrest in its neighbor. The Russian Defense Ministry couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday about the Ukrainian jet and Russia’s foreign ministry didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.

Donetsk separatist boss Strelkov, Kremlin’s proxy in war, says he ordered shootdown thinking plane was Ukrainian

https://twitter.com/NATOSource

Resist We Much on July 17, 2014 at 1:18 PM

It was apparently shot at 33,000 feet. The Ukraine ain’t that big, and there’s a long glide path (even for non-aerodynamic parts) from that altitude.

GWB on July 17, 2014 at 1:13 PM

But not from the point of the end of the flight tracker all the way across the country. The Columbia debris maybe, this plane not so much.

Their lives should not have been lost in this manner.

My words cannot express these feelings.

ajacksonian on July 17, 2014 at 1:20 PM

This time, Russians have a convenient figurehead to blame. Strelkov’s people are nominally independent, and do not answer to Putin.

Rix on July 17, 2014 at 12:55 PM

Yeah, right. They probably built those surface-to-air missiles with 25km altitude engagement range and the radar guidance systems in their basement.

Or bought them off of ebay.

Nice timing Obama, this takes the border off the front page which was killing him

Conservative4ev on July 17, 2014 at 1:21 PM

Here’s the translation of Strelkov’s statement:

“In the area of Torez, we have just shot down an AN-26 airplane, it is scattered about somewhere by the Progress coal mine.

We warned them – don’t fly ‘in our sky.’

Here is a video confirmation of the latest ‘bird drop.’

The bird fell beyond the pit refuse heap, it did not damage the residential sector.

Civilians were not hurt.

There is also information about a second downed airplane, apparently an SU.”

http://www.interpretermag.com/ukraine-liveblog-day-150-ukrainian-troops-describe-grad-rocket-attack-from-russia/

If the “second downed airplane” is the 777, it’s not clear that Stelkov is taking responsibility for that, he just says they “have information about it”.

any real signal differences between military and commercial jet ‘transponders’?

tanked59 on July 17, 2014 at 12:55 PM

Yes. But not generally that the enemy could read. The military bits are for identification by friendly forces. But, the transponder code would be fairly obvious to someone trained in Air Defense. The right people would know that was a civilian airliner. Some knucklehead told to find an airplane and shoot it down woul not.

cozmo on July 17, 2014 at 1:18 PM

The SA-11/17 has a proximity fuze, and a semi-active homer on the missile. If it only got a partial hit – enough to “kill” the airplane, but leave it partly intact – then it might have taken that long to drop. I’m just saying it’s very feasible, not that’s what happened.

A lot of musicians work right up til the day they die. Ringo Starr just turned 74 a few days ago, but he still runs onstage like it was 1964 (he’s doing a full tour of the US as we speak). And Les Paul, who invented the electric guitar, was doing a weekly gig in New York City into his 90s.

Here’s what happened:
The other Malaysian Airlines jet came out of the black hole over Ukraine in proximity to the one shot down. Some Air Defense guy freaks out at the sudden appearance of a large radar signature. Thinking it must be an American super-stealth bomber from Area 51, he pops off a missile at it. As that jet promptly popped back into another black hole, the missile naturally got a lock on todays’ unfortunate flight, blowing it up. (The effects of the black hole allowed the debris field to transit the entire nation of Ukraine before impacting the ground.) The “separatists” moving the debris and the recorders aren’t really separatists, but Blue Book personnel covering up.

(My resume for becoming a producer at CNN.)

On July 8, the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine closed its airspace to civilian aircraft after rebels shot a military transport aircraft that was flying over 20,000 feet.

The restriction warned commercial aircraft against using Ukranian airspace.

Was MH17 flying through warzone to save fuel?

That’s typical Russian/Eastern European stuff, their news can be quite graphic, in fact much worse than the pictures you saw.

Lost my parents in an airplane crash…those pictures brought back some images I don’t care to recall..

These images are an HONEST portrayal of the horrors of these events. Reality is often times quite disturbing, indeed..

TWA Flight 800 exploded and crashed on this day in 1996. Probably just a coincidence.

Too many Soviet apologists on this board.

And I will continue to call them Soviets as long as they act like them.

There’s a number of people who think the Ukrainians are the aggressors in the conflict, that the conflict is Ukraine’s fault, that their new government is evil, that they deserve to be stomped into the ground by Putin, and that Obama used the CIA to set this whole conflict up to get us into another war to make himself look good. They are also happy with Putin because he’s making Obama look really bad in this showdown.

While I enjoy watching Obama get his nose rubbed in it, this Russian resurgence is bad for the US.

Was MH17 flying through warzone to save fuel?

Apparently the actually banning of flying was over Crimea, a few hundred miles from where this was…

It is a Russian tradition to shoot down Asian airliners. Polish airliner crashed near Katyn several years ago. Putin’s propaganda machine is gearing up.

Realistically, what can 0bama do?

Let’s say he wants to do something, I know, but that is the first step in this exercise. He has squandered all of his international good will. He, along with the US, has lost any fear others had of a US response. He has crapped on all the allies that would be needed in order to even have a response. The target is in Europe and it shares a boundary with a supplier, and ally, of the probable instigator.

Nothing will come of this. And we have 0bama to thank.

But it wasn’t always this way….

Electrongod on July 17, 2014 at 2:47 PM

Even separatists in Ukraine would have more sense than to do this. Even if they did, what possible reason or benefit would come from taking out a Malaysian commercial jet?

JetBoy on July 17, 2014 at 12:10 PM

So they could blame it on the Ukrainians. It would immediately provide Russia with a sterling reason to invade and overthrow the current government…

GWB on July 17, 2014 at 12:45 PM

How can this be blamed on the Ukrainians? If it’s true a Russian-made S2A missile took down this plane, chances are it wasn’t a Ukraine resistance group that would be responsible. This wasn’t a Russian aircraft…which still makes me wonder what was to be gained by anyone taking out a Malaysian airliner? Unless it was a case of mistaken identity.

Just from looking over pics like that, something pretty powerful tore that plane up. They’re saying there was no smoke trail wen the plane came down, meaning the engines weren’t damaged by the purported missile and the cabin wasn’t burning as it descended. But it doesn’t take an explosive missile to bring down a commercial jet. A bowling ball launched at high speed would do it.

People are beginning to become alarmed that the President may not be mentally well.

redguy on July 17, 2014 at 2:59 PM

The increasingly unstable and overly-made-up Shephard Smith minutes ago on Fox:

“Think of what we have coming together here… This is Ramadan… So there are no muslims on that plane most likely, or if there are there are very few.”

neocon stormtrooper on July 17, 2014 at 2:24 PM

Stop it. He didn’t actually utter those words, did he? The national carrier of a majority Muslim nation, flying to its capital city, surely had a large number of Muslims aboard. Even if it were true that no Muslims were on the plane (kinda like there were no Jews in the Twin Towers, right?) what point was he trying to make? I can’t think of how that would impact this story or the fallout from the attack.

That, and affirmative-action.
