Video: And now, an important message from Eddie Vedder on Israel, Palestine, and war

posted at 6:41 pm on July 14, 2014 by Allahpundit

To cleanse the palate, via Ace, no headline with “Eddie Vedder” and “Palestine” in it can lead to something good, can it?

Skip to 4:00 or so for the key bit. (He drops an F-bomb or two, so here’s your NSFW warning.) Right now, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Mike McCready are drawing straws to see who has to tell Eddie that Israel withdrew from Gaza nearly 10 years ago.

Although he never explicitly mentions Israel by name, Vedder denounces “those who go across borders and take over land that doesn’t belong to them.”

“I swear to f—ing god, there are people out there who are looking for a reason to kill,” the famed American rocker said. “They’re looking for a reason to go across borders and take over land that doesn’t belong to them. They should get the f—out, and mind their own f—ing business.”

“We don’t want to give them our money. We don’t want to give them our taxes to drop bombs on children.”

It was this point that Vedder began belting out lyrics from Edwin Starr’s pacifist anthem, “War.”

I’m going to protest by traveling back in time to when I last listened to Pearl Jam and warn my 17-year-old self to boycott. What transforms this from being merely irritating to egregious isn’t the sentiment; it’s embarrassing but not surprising that Mumbles here thinks Israel, rather than Hamas, is looking for a reason to kill and “take over land.” What makes this egregious is that this guy has the entire rock canon at his fingertips and a world-class band to back him up, and the most imaginative song he can conjure up to electrify the moment is the most famously bombastic anti-war anthem of the Vietnam era. It’d be like asking a modern folk singer to sing something about peace and having him turn instantly to “Imagine.” Your musical repertoire, even at moments of searing emotion, consists only of songs that everyone in the world knows and regards as hopelessly played out?

I guess it could have been worse. They could have played “Us and Them.” *Shudder* Exit quotation:

On second thought, just shut up. Your music sucks anyway.

Pearl Jam should go to Gaza, set up and play. We’ll see how long the Jihadis let that go on.

Can’t really blame him, because 10 years ago is the last coherent memory Eddie has.

The “palestinians” are terrorist squatters on Israeli lands – they must be removed if there is ever to be peace.

People who swear often use words without any regard to definitions.

“You keep using that word.
I do not think that means what you think it means.”

itsnotaboutme on July 14, 2014 at 6:56 PM

With all due respect, he’s a musician, he does that reasonably well, but that’s where his expertise ends, as evinced by his lack of understanding and clarity regarding the Israeli position in the Middle East, and his willingness to use his own position to advocate for those who’ve sworn to eradicate Israel.

Mr. Vedder should stick to what he knows and leave politics to those who are at least willing to take the time to become informed.

thatsafactjack on July 14, 2014 at 6:56 PM

Or do I mean elocution?

Cindy Munford on July 14, 2014 at 6:57 PM

I suspect it wasn’t an unplanned rant. I’ll bet “War” was next on the playlist, and Vedder needed to catch his breath.

mark1971-exactly right; I guess artists/etc. who support the Pali’s are smart enough to ignore their own advice and stay out of Gaza or the West Bank. But very hard to believe they have any active brain cells, so maybe its just blind luck??

As a retired music journalist, I can say that almost every single musician and actor you hear or see is a Jew hater.

At every single party I went to, they told three kinds of jokes: Jew jokes, black jokes, and gay jokes.

But they didn’t use the terms I just used.

Vedder has a Backpfeifengesicht, German for “a face badly in need of a fist in it.” His sanctimony and humorlessness have always made me sick.

Ma and Pa.

It goes back to Mother Europe.

The Swiss psychologist Alice Miller made a strong case for antisemitism being a genuine mental illness. It defies all rationality.

As you you ask, how does a privileged leftist teenager in the Pacific Northwest become a rabid Jew hater?

An hour of online research would show anybody of average intelligence that the Israel of their fantasies bears no resemblance to the Israel of reality.

Do they research anything before opining on it? They do not.

A Chair of Some Kind on July 14, 2014 at 7:18 PM

Actually the truth is slightly different. Most tell those kinds of jokes, because, well, they just aren’t socially adept enough to grasp how offensive jokes like that are. Professional musicians and actors tend to be socially arrested developmentally. It’s a side effect of spending 8 to 10 hours a day, during your formative years, locked away from real society studying your craft.

I’m not excusing it, just telling you that most of the time, that appearance of racist bigoted mentality, is little more than skin deep juvenile behavior they never learned was wrong.

The hate I saw was real. Never met such pathological haters in my life.

Also, all the parties I went to were nearly 100 percent white. Unless it was a launching for a hip-hop star, all the social events were populated almost exclusively by whites.

Very well stated, Mr. Wilde. Often people don’t consider the very real price to the individual which is frequently exacted in the effort to hone raw talent into mastery of an art form.

Spoiled rock star spewing cliche’s.

Here’s a link an Israeli popular musician’s letter to Roger Waters (Pink Floyd BDS extraordinaire) that should probably be directed at Vedder too, though he hasn’t joined the BDS thing yet.

It could depend on our milieus. Mine was Los Angeles, the largest open-air mental asylum on the planet.

I’m from San Diego, so trust me, I spent plenty of time in that scene. Way to much time in Simi Valley if you know what I mean.

Is anyone calling for Pearl Jam songs to be taken out of rotation at classic rock/grunge stations?

Meanwhile, Hank Williams Jr. was let go by MNF for his political opinions.

Again, libfree said it perfectly: sad hypocrites.

It’s technically what happens when you’ve pissed off everyone you ever played with and then run out of money.

That, and realizing that living beyond one’s forties is a good thing…

Eddie Vedder – we’re not talking “mental giant” here.

ROTFLMAO… No… no we most assuredly are not.

Cough cough… Actually that was an accident, I never expected to make it this long.

Thank you, I was not expecting anyone from L.A to be so thoughtful… Never can tell what might be catching from L.A. <— Insert evil laughter here…

Wait, Us and Them from Pink Floyd? Stupid political opinions that both Roger & David hold aside, Pink Floyd is a GREAT band and that’s a really good song. Overplayed perhaps but that’s hardly their fault for writing such a good song. Nothing Eddie Vedder has thought of can hold a candle to that album.

Overplayed perhaps

Andy in Colorado on July 14, 2014 at 7:59 PM

I’ll say. We use to tell people that they were from Jacksonville. We had to stop saying it because too many people believed us.

Genius is like a laser beam, not a spot light. It’s focus is very tight. You can be brilliant in one very specialized area, and a complete imbecile in everything else.

Someone needs to remind these dolts that the flatulent 1960s ended over a half a century ago.
