Josh Earnest: We’re the most transparent administration ever, no matter what journalists say

posted at 9:21 am on July 14, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

That’s their story, and they’re sticking to it — or at least Josh Earnest is. CNN interviewed the new White House press secretary yesterday and challenged him over a written complaint from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Poynter Institute. The two organizations accused the Obama administration of conducting “politically driven suppression of news and information about federal agencies,” and demanded more transparency across a wide expanse of the federal government. Earnest dismissed this as pro forma for political-beat journalists:

How does Earnest defend the administration? He brags about the White House visitor logs being released to the Internet on a quarterly basis, and the inclusion of the press on private fundraisers. The latter, though, usually consists of locking reporters up in a bedroom during the entire event and force-feeding them anodyne copy. Similar treatment was given the pool reporter who accompanied Barack Obama on a golf trip in May, only he didn’t get a cushy bedroom — he got stuck in a maintenance shed, and never once laid eyes on Obama.

Small wonder that journalists aren’t exactly leaping with joy over Obama administration “transparency”:

The letter, signed by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Poynter Institute, among others, accuses the White House of “politically driven suppression of news and information about federal agencies.”

It asks the president to create an ombudsman charged with enforcing his goal of government transparency, and asks Obama “issue a clear directive telling federal employees they’re not only free to answer questions from reporters and the public, but actually encouraged to do so.”

“We believe that is one of the most important things you can do for the nation now, before the policies become even more entrenched,” the letter says.

Katie Pavlich gives us the thumbnail history that prompted the letter:

When President Obama ran for office way back in 2008, he infamously promised to have the “most transparent administration in history.” Fast forward to 2014 and the opposite has happened. Not only does the administration heavily control the narrative of information going out to the press, the White House does everything possible to keep reporters from getting their hands on important information. Not to mention, the Department of Justice has heavily monitored reporters through phone and email monitoring.

It’s not for nothing that CNN’s reporter asks incredulously after Earnest’s bragging about transparency: “You all still stick by that line?”

It all depends on the meaning of the word “transparent”. If by “transparent”, Earnest means “we’re as openly Communist as they come”, he might be right. If by “transparent”, Earnest means “our processes are open”, then they’re about as transparent as 3 yards of mud.

When President Obama ran for office way back in 2008, he infamously promised to have the “most transparent administration in history.”

I don’t think this is the proper use of the word ‘infamous’. Such a promise of transparency is not unpopular or evil.

Similar treatment was given the pool reporter who accompanied Barack Obama on a golf trip in May, only he didn’t get a cushy bedroom — he got stuck in a maintenance shed, and never once laid eyes on Obama.

I have a suspicion that Obama doesn’t really golf all that much, but rather uses “golfing” as a way to have off-the record meetings with certain individuals.

Since the press is rarely ever near Obama when he’s “golfing”, Obama could be meeting with absolutely anyone… unseen and off the record… no White House visitor logs for those individuals, because they didn’t visit the White House, but rather met with Obama off the record in some location near a golf course.

Transparency would be allowing reporters to follow Obama around all 18 holes of the golf course. Do we have ANY proof that Obama has actually played all 18 holes on ANY of his multitude of golf trips?

Again, I suspect that these golf trips are less about golf and more about having multi-hour meetings with certain individuals without there being any official record of the meeting or the individuals involved.

Chicago-Southside Residents Go Off On Obama Over Amnesty: “Worst President Ever Elected”

On Friday evening residents from Chicago’s Southside held a protest in front of the Chicago Police Department against the intolerable violence plaguing their communities and sounded off on President Obama for paying favor to illegal aliens crossing the southern border. Residents also called for the resignation of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy for their failure to effectively handle the city’s violence epidemic.

The president’s handling of the illegal invasion in Texas prompted residents to call him out for ignoring the current state of Chicago, where 120 people have been shot and at least 26 killed so far this July.

“Barack will go down as the worth president ever elected, Bill Clinton was the African-American President,” one resident said, in response to the president’s performance on the job, “President Barack needs to pay attention to Chicago, if he can not pay attention to Chicago and the African-American community, he needs to resign.”

Another compared the current state of Black-American life to that during slavery, saying, “Today, if you look at the time that we were brought here as slaves 400 years ago, we got the same results today.”

The recent shooting of Jasmine Curry, a pregnant mother of five on Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway, prompted the residents to organize the demonstration. Curry’s father, Pierre Curry, attended the event and addressed and spoke of the pain he has endured after losing his first born daughter after losing a son as well, less than one year ago.

Curry said, “I’d like to tell the young peoples [sic] out here, especially young African-Americans, I’d like to tell the world, Mr. President, congress, senate, aldermen, governor, the mayor–losing a child is something else, losing something that God gave to you, and some fool in the street took it, he didn’t have a right to take my son or my daughter from her five kids. And if anybody knows something, anything, man up,” he then asked for prayers before breaking into tears.
