Obama aims to keep Democrats happy while he coasts to 2016

posted at 9:21 am on July 11, 2014 by Noah Rothman

President Barack Obama is telegraphing rather clearly that he has given up on the presidency. It is a phenomenon that has been observable for some time. The Free Beacon’s Matthew Continetti made the compelling case that Obama embraced his post-presidency as early as June. For Obama, there remains one final headache: the midterm elections. After that, he can abandon the final flimsy pretenses designed to project the impression that he is at all interested in governing the country.

But the road to the post-presidency is peppered with speed bumps and potholes — inconveniences that Obama would much rather avoid. Nuisances arise like the first unilateral annexation of territory in one sovereign European state by another for the first time since World War II. Frustrations like the systematic effort to cover up fatal incompetency at the VA. Or bothers like a humanitarian disaster involving children on America’s southern border.

Events are such inconsiderate things.

So the president does what he can to avoid being too closely associated with these crises by only addressing them when he must and in brief, and by not taking any definitive measures to address them so as to avoid taking blame should those measures fail. The president’s true focus, the object which has kept his attention for most of his political career, is maintaining the adoration of his devotees.

Even at this delicate moment, Obama campaigns. Speaking before an audience of supporters in Texas this week, after spurning lawmakers in his own party and surely those advisors close to him concerned about the inevitable hit in the polls he would take by not seeing the border crisis for himself, the president indulged in a bit of self-pity.

“You hear some of them: ‘Sue him. Impeach him,’” Obama said of Republicans who are attempting to force the president to faithfully execute the laws passed by Congress in compliance with the oath he took.

“You’re going to use taxpayer money to sue me for doing my job while you don’t do your job,” Obama added to the screams of the ever-shrinking pool of believers.

Obama enthralled the rally attendees, and a few reporters, by quoting Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed.” “I’m the guy doing my job,” Obama said, scolding a cast of imaginary Republicans before him. “You must be the other guy.”

Cleverness; it’s why they love him. For Obama’s supporters, it is a reasonable substitute for administering the nation. Take, for example, MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski who exemplified the audience most receptive to Obama’s technique.

After making a big show of feigning confusion over the reasoning for the House lawsuit against the president, she reveled in a few of Obama’s one-liners.

Time’s Mark Halperin and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough were dumbstruck. “It’s depressing as an American,” Scarborough said.

“I don’t understand the game or the strategy,” Halperin agreed.

“I beg to differ just a bit, guys. They’re suing him,” Brzezinski interjected. “I mean, it’s ridiculous. I’m not sure what tone you want him to take.”

With that, she introduced another satisfying Obama burn.

The president’s rhetorical digs into Republicans remain a potent intoxicant for his supporters. They serve to distract from the nagging, persistent, and increasingly irresistible realization that this presidency, one which began with such promise, has failed.

And, in that moment, the MSNBC hosts stumbled upon Obama’s elusive political strategy: keep Mika, and those with a similar political outlook, happy. Ride it out until the midterms. If possible, avoid catastrophic mistakes and make no waves. Coast.

Brzezinski & Co. are perfectly satisfied with that tactic, but the country will suffer. Great problems will go unaddressed and political factionalism and discord will become the dominant features of the American political character.

These are depressing times for all but partisan Democrats, but that is what happens when the President of the United States is more enamored with his role as the head of his political party.

Obama….

Electrongod on July 11, 2014 at 9:25 AM

Obama has been “coasting” since he was born. He has never been held to account for anything, nor has he ever had to work. The fact that he has degrees from Columbia and Harvard (allegedly, proof has never been presented) should be an embarrassment to those supposedly elite institutions, and should ANGER anyone who has ever paid the cost of their tuitions.

The President that I still think does not finish his term in office. 2 years is an eternity in these times, if we get the terrorist attack that his feckless dithering weaksauce is setting us up for, I think he gets run out of the White House on a rail, impeachment or not, the People will not tolerate his presence any further.

Obama only prays to himself (his followers pray to him as well).

Obama has 2 more years and 2.8 billion dollars of lifestyle to live to the max, and if you object to that you are clearly a racist.

As for Israel, Obama’s current weakness is a godsend to them. He can’t stop them from crushing Hamas.

Mika will never abandon the rat-eared wonder. Never! So what if he’s ignoring that invasion on our Southern border, the IRS and NSA are spying and targeting Americans, the Middle East is literally on fire, and Putin is getting the band back together…..

Mika will go to the matresses defending the need for the President to get some down time in August at a multi-million dollar estate in Martha’s Vineyard. He needs to recharge his batteries for further fights against the 1%.

How anyone could believe this President started with “such promise” is beyond me. What is that based on? Clearly not his track record of sealing his own past, unsealing opponent’s divorce record, and voting present. To claim he had “such promise” is an admission that you are gullible.

I gotta add my voice to those asking what “promise” did this Presidency begin with? There was a lot of unfounded rhetoric about Obama being post-partisan and a uniter. But only idiots thought that was true in 2008 and whatever “promise” along those lines was destroyed by January 2009 when Obama emerged as a bully who consistently attacked Republicans. Remember this gem two days after the filthy bastard took office?

‘I won.’ — Obama, Jan. 23, 2009, to Republicans during a meeting with congressional leaders about his stimulus package, according to sources familiar with the conversation.

He was all in for that.

What’s sad is that Mitt Romney was just the opposite. Really wanted to do the job, had an idea of what needed to be done and knew how to do it, but he didn’t care that much about the title or the trappings.

Then I hope you enjoy it in good health, Bmore. I mean neither you nor Noah any offense, but MSNBC is mostly mindless prattle. If that’s going to be Noah’s backdrop for most of what he writes, then yeah, I’ll avoid it from here on out.

It just holds no interest for me. Sorry.

It’s pretty obvious that the Dems internal polls must not be that bad for Obama to be acting like this.

Looking at the latest poll out of NH that has Shaheen destroying Scott Brown by 12 pts seems to indicate that Obama’s 43% or so approval isn’t hurting the Dem Senate candidates one bit.

mypalfish on July 11, 2014 at 10:15 AM

The moon bats on the coasts are lost causes. Ignorant elitists in abundance. The only solution is a peaceful dissolution of the United States. That’s why I came to Texas from California 4+ years ago.

If I wanted Mediaite, I’d be there instead of here. A post on what someone said on MSNBC is fine every now any then, but the current rate is just too high for my taste.

DisneyFan on July 11, 2014 at 10:22 AM

No surprise….Obama broke his new toy (The USA) and has to move on. Like with many spoiled kids the toy stopped working the way it did when he got it so now he is pushing it to its limits.

tej on July 11, 2014 at 10:22 AM

The only thing that has been ‘unexpected’ is the complacency of the public and the ease and willingness with which the folks have given up their Constitutional Republic.

Times like this, I am glad my father is not still living. It would enrage him to know that his service and sacrifice in WWII was pointless and of such little importance to the “Americans” of today.

bimmcorp on July 11, 2014 at 10:19 AM

I am glad my grandfather didn’t witness this either.

The one thing that was unexpected, to me is that he got re-elected. I absolutely did not think that would happen, though we know now that the 2012 election wasn’t exactly honest. But it shouldn’t have been close enough to matter, proving that we have a lot more wrong with this nation right now than Barack Obama.

Fair enough. No need to be sorry though. As with all new hires here at HA I wish them well and observe. I like his posts. I am curious though. Where do you get info regarding any sway the left may have politically. You know, so you can be informed on how to combat the lies they tell. I understand as staunch Conservatives we can generally fend fine without. I like having the option to consider their shenanigans before hand as well.

Obama is akin to a mega-star athlete that upon receiving his final huge contract is a bust, does not care and has no shame.

Basically he is a very intelligent but incompetent man. His meteoric rise landed him at a point beyond his capabilities, but he will never admit it, nor will his groupies in the media.

You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he is up there, and you
just wonder what kind of a dumb ass put him up there in the first place.

Democrats happy? Will never happen.

Bitter Clinger on July 11, 2014 at 10:34 AM

Anybody who thought Obama held great promise for the presidency was ODing on the KoolAid.

When the only promise was ‘Hope and Change’, what the hell is that?

Even the KoolAid drinkers should have clued in when he said he was going to funfamently transform America.

Most Americans didn’t want to be changed to Communism.

IMO, MSNBC is not a good representation of what the left is doing. TPM, Slate, Daily Kos, NYT, etc. are all much more in line with the strategy being pursued by the left.

I don’t normally frequent those sites myself, but there are Conservative sites I’ve come to trust who do. I learn about the strategy of the left from reading trusted commentary from those sites. (HA is one of those sites I turn to. I just don’t see MSNBC as being a credible source on it, Bmore.)

Then there’s also Real Clear Politics, Politico, WaPo for a mix.

One of the sites I visit to find out about what’s going on with Unions is Labor Union Reports.

Lots of options out there, Bmore.

ConstantineXI on July 11, 2014 at 9:28 AM

I disagree. Nobody will stand up to him. He’ll continue to ramp up the damage until he hands off the reins to the next democrat president. We as people are unwilling to do what it would take defend ourselves against this toppling of our government. We deserve this.

lineholder on July 11, 2014 at 10:40 AM

Nothing about Obama has been a surprise to me. He’s exactly who I thought he was back in 2007: a product of the radical, anti-American left; an Alinsky-trained community agitator. Obama tries to change the country and get things done by pitting one group of people against another – by pissing people off. He stated in “one” of his autobiographies that his community organizer training was the most important of his life.

Every political office he’s ever had, he simply used a stepping stone to the next higher office, and he has a history of wrongfully taking credit for the work of others. As a state senator in Illinois, his name was put on legislation he had nothing to do with – to pad his resume for this U.S. Senate run.

He’s never really had any interest in working with Republicans or compromising to get anything done. As even Democrats like Bob Woodward have observed, it’s always “his way or the highway.”

rockmom on July 11, 2014 at 9:58 AM

I don’t even think he is intelligent. Why did he never release his college transcripts.

He is an Affirmative Action president who didn’t have to work for anything, but got passes all through life due to pigmentation.

Now he has the most important job in the world and hasn’t a clue.

I don’t know. Look, I can’t claim to be a high-info voter. I’m somewhere in the middle with lots to learn. And part of the reason I come to Conservatives sites is to learn. (Hillsdale College has had some great courses online FREE that I’ve enjoyed)

People are different, Bmore. For myself, I’m not much interested in what MSNBC is offering. It doesn’t advance one the things I hope to achieve in going to Conservative sites, i.e. to learn.

But what I know, just like I know the sun shines in the east, is that this nation is in for the fight of its life. Being able to present a solid argument for what we support and what we believe in is important. Being able to have means and ways of encouraging activism is important. I’m someone who looks for those kinds of things. That’s just me.
