Report: ISIS just seized a bunch of uranium in Iraq

posted at 10:41 am on July 10, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Just days after ISIS militants in Iraq seized and captured a Saddam Hussein-era chemical weapons facility and all the degraded chemical rockets contained therein, fundamentalist Islamic militants have achieved another coup. According to a report in Reuters, the Sunni insurgent group just captured radioactive materials used in scientific research which Iraqi sources claimed could be smuggled out of Iraq and used in terrorist acts. Sense a pattern developing?

Nearly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of uranium compounds were kept at Mosul University, Iraq’s U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the July 8 letter obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

“Terrorist groups have seized control of nuclear material at the sites that came out of the control of the state,” Alhakim wrote, adding that such materials “can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction.”

U.S officials told Reuters that there was a limited threat posed by the non-enriched uranium seized by ISIS militants. Similarly, American authorities “played down the threat” from the takeover of a chemical weapons facility, according to an AP report on that matter.

While it is possible that none of these materials could be used in effective weapons of mass destruction, but it is also apparent that achieving WMD capability is one of ISIS’s paramount goals. Given the fact that American intelligence officials have warned that the group is determined to attack Western targets, this is a worrying development.

And let’s continue that practice of birthright citizenship so that we have Middle-Eastern women flying in to give birth and then flying back out afterwards. We have decades of these crazies walking the earth with US citizenship in their pockets.

It’s just a matter of time. Ask that question in a poll and see what kind of response you get.

They’re using 55 gallon drums filled with chlorine gas as WMDs in Syria. So, yeah, I discount this administration’s claims that there is limited threat here.

Which, of course, when Obama’s people talk about limited threat they are talking about blaming Obama and not the idea that 9/11 atrocities could well be in our immediate future while the effing bastard is off on vacations and fundraising.

Worst case scenario: Poorly built dirty bomb. Who is going to enrich this stuff for them? Besides, I don’t believe they have enough fissile material to create an actual nuclear weapon. Yes, they should not have this stuff just because it is hazardous material all by itself, but they are hard pressed to actually turn it into anything useful. The threat and actual danger from dirty bombs is greatly exaggerated. The most dangerous part of any dirty bomb is the conventional explosives used to try and spread the radioactive material.

You do realize that if the muslims get their hands on a nuke it IS going to be used in a very deep blue city, killing mostly progressives and their dependent clients of the State, right?

And that they WILL do so just as soon as they possibly can, and they cannot be negotiated with, bought off, bargained with as well, right?

Maybe something should be done to prevent that. Something like securing the borders?

Unlike the “don’t worry” response to ISIS’ seizing of the chemical weapon depot, I’m actually inclined to believe the “don’t worry” response here (at least as it relates to the uranium and not to other radioactive isotopes ISIS probably grabbed). Without a signficiant amount of infrastructure, it isn’t easy to either enrich the uranium so that the U-235 portion is enough to create a weapon or transmute it to the far-more-dangerous plutonium.

Given uranium gives off only alpha radiation and it cannot be absorbed through the skin, it pretty much has to be inhaled or otherwise ingested to actually have an effect. Given said alpha radiation is given off slowly, its effects are more on the long-term scale. There are plenty of other radioactive isotopes that would serve a lot better in a “dirty” bomb.

Militants in Iraq Seize ‘Low-Grade’ Uranium
July 10 2014

“This material is also not ‘good’ enough for a [radiological] dirty bomb,” he said.

Iraq informed the United Nations of the material’s capture shortly after the country this week joined the 1987 Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, the New York Times reported. A 2005 amendment extended the pact’s jurisdiction to include atomic substances “in peaceful domestic use, storage and transport,” according to a Wednesday statement by the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

“It also provides for expanded cooperation between and among states regarding rapid measures to locate and recover stolen or smuggled nuclear material, mitigate any radiological consequences of sabotage, and prevent and combat related offenses,” the press release states.

I only caught the last ten minutes or so, but riot-wise, did you watch long enough to hear the announcer say the German crowd would be escorted out and away from the stadium? Yikes.

By the time history is written the name Obama will be just as reviled as Hitler.

ConstantineXI on July 10, 2014 at 11:15 AM

Keep dreaming. It won’t happen unless and until the entire Democrat machine is dismantled – including but not limited to public education, academia, show biz, mass media, and race-hustling community organizing.

I’m beginning to look forward to that purge. Would be the best thing for this country since the founding.

This story is here to fear monger you into supporting endless nation-building abroad. The worst thing these guys can do is develop melanoma.

More and more the terms “American Intelligence” are becoming antonyms.

“American authorities ‘played down the threat.’” American authorities no longer have any idea how to recongize a threat – evidenced by their recent fixation on offensive videos.

That is a bit of a stretch. You probably are too emotional and not rationally grounded to be taken seriously. I just hope that you have enough people in your life to support you in your time of need.

Nope, but considering a proper soccer riot can destroy an entire town, I’m not surprised.

Dirty bomb + EBT glitch + new basketball shoe + soccer game.

Crap, I’m probably higher up on a list now.

But he did whine a lot about how the German People “failed him” in his bunker as the Soviet tanks rolled into Berlin…

ConstantineXI on July 10, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Drowned a whole lot of his fellow Berliners too, deliberately ordering the flooding subway stations and tunnels because they cowardly took shelter in them from the shelling and bombing. Not worthy because they lacked faith in their leader and refused to die bravely fighting the Soviets to the last for the Fatherland.

I can only wonder what Obumbles has in mind for our lack of faith in him. We are not worthy.

Is there much question as to the demographics of the mob?

*sigh* I used to not think like this.

Hmm, ISIS has now gotten uranium and chemical weapons in Iraq.

I guess that whole “there were no WMDs in Iraq when we invaded” bullshit can be put to bed now, right?

Who knows what could come from the unbalanced mind of a severe NPD case in the face of the world that he though worshiped him rejecting him?

Hopefully there is a contingency plan for seizing the nuclear football when that happens.

Who do you think will face a level of rage second only to that directed at islam if New York or DC (along with a million pr more people) disappears under the mushroom cloud of an islamic nuke?

Obama insists on keeping the border open. Obama insists on treating terrorists with mink gloves. Blame will not be able to be avoided.

ConstantineXI on July 10, 2014 at 12:33 PM

Okay, let me preference this with the following statement

no, i’m not wishing a state within the US be nuked

But how ironic would it be if an islamic terrorist came to the US via the mexican border up to CA and denonated a dirty bomb?

I’m sure we’d have the Obama adminstration blame it on a video or something and claim this is why we need more illegals… “to umm err umm make us stronger”

If/when this happens Obama won’t be President any more by sundown.

Nah, doubt it. He and the State-Run media would just blame it on BUUUUUUUSH. And 40 to 50% of the voters would lap it up like the dogs they are.
