Report: ISIS just seized a bunch of uranium in Iraq

posted at 10:41 am on July 10, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Just days after ISIS militants in Iraq seized and captured a Saddam Hussein-era chemical weapons facility and all the degraded chemical rockets contained therein, fundamentalist Islamic militants have achieved another coup. According to a report in Reuters, the Sunni insurgent group just captured radioactive materials used in scientific research which Iraqi sources claimed could be smuggled out of Iraq and used in terrorist acts. Sense a pattern developing?

Nearly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of uranium compounds were kept at Mosul University, Iraq’s U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the July 8 letter obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

“Terrorist groups have seized control of nuclear material at the sites that came out of the control of the state,” Alhakim wrote, adding that such materials “can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction.”

U.S officials told Reuters that there was a limited threat posed by the non-enriched uranium seized by ISIS militants. Similarly, American authorities “played down the threat” from the takeover of a chemical weapons facility, according to an AP report on that matter.

While it is possible that none of these materials could be used in effective weapons of mass destruction, but it is also apparent that achieving WMD capability is one of ISIS’s paramount goals. Given the fact that American intelligence officials have warned that the group is determined to attack Western targets, this is a worrying development.

And who would that be, alqaeda? Lol

No real country is going to put their neck on the line for 44 kilo of uranium. A terrorist group would, but they baddest of them all is actually the one in control of it. And of course they don’t need the money.

I predict they might use it to make ridiculous threats they can’t back up.

The left has been asking “Where are the WMDs?” for so long. They must be thrilled to finally get an answer.

There Goes the Neighborhood on July 10, 2014 at 12:48 PM

If/when this happens Obama won’t be President any more by sundown.

ConstantineXI on July 10, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Nah, doubt it. He and the State-Run media would just blame it on BUUUUUUUSH. And 40 to 50% of the voters would lap it up like the dogs they are.

Meople on July 10, 2014 at 12:44 PM

No.

There are some things that cannot be spun. The entire country will go Murietta on Obama, assuming he SURVIVES the nuke that his irresponsible, pro islam policy hath wrought.

What could go wrong? wow…Don’t forget people, Obama helped train and fund some of these monsters

Let’s see – so now they have chemical WMDs that didn’t exist, uranium WMD material that didn’t exist, they’re killing thousands of other Muslims, and they’re destroying Islamic mosques and temples across Iraq….
I can’t wait to see these animals go after Mecca.

Pass the popcorn….

Let’s send Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame in there to get the straight skinny, since we know he’s an unimpeachable source, and she’s a trained killer. What’s Valerie’s burqua size, anyway?

So for those keeping score at home:
- law-abiding individual who never harmed another human being in his life owning a standard firearm: danger to society
- brutal terrorist organization in possession of radiological materials: meh

When the MSM ignores this, or pushes the blame elsewhere, can we THEN question their patriotism?

Obama also released the ISIS leader from Gitmo in 2009.

All the blood of that man is on his hands.

How ’bout Labia?

PS Do the words, dirty bomb, ring any bells?

formwiz on July 10, 2014 at 2:38 PM

Let’s see. The chances of Arab terrorists making an atomic bomb are about the same as a cave man developing sophisticated software. However, the uranium could be used in “dirty” bombs.

MaiDee on July 10, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Then there was the tons of yellow cake uranium ore that eventually ended up in Canadian hands. And the mobile germ warfare vehicles that the “experts” said weren’t used for germ warfare research (yeah, I guess they were actually Good Humor ice cream trucks). There were terrorist training camps in Iraq-I remember seeing a documentary with embedded journalists showing our men (Army or USMC, can’t remember which) taking over one of these bases after fighting against non-Iraqi Al-Qaeda terrorists who had been living and training there when the invasion started. There are also stories about our troops destroying tons of nerve gas munitions. I also remember something about a mysterious convoy of trucks that traveled from Iraq to Syria during the invasion.

What I don’t get is why all of this stuff wasn’t found, especially the radioactive stuff? I’m thinking that the WMD were indeed there, butthat was not really the main reason for invading Iraq. If not, then why?

Schadenfreude on July 10, 2014 at 3:05 PM

they call it uranium compounds but I don’t see anything specifically stating its 238. odd are it is and this really would be hard to make into anything bad.
if its 235 they may be able to sell it to fund themselves more.
would be much worse if they had gotten some Pu and made dust out of it to disperse.

And how is it we didn’t take custody of the Uranium in the 10 years we were in Mosul?? And why didn’t we destroy this old WMD plant when we had a chance (was it being used as a grade school or something?).

Yeah, because our “American intelligence officials” have such a great record of accuracy. After all, they prevented the shoe bomber, and the underwear bomber, and the Boston Marathon bombers too, right?

Have to wonder how much ISIS will get for this stuff on the black market… Iran will have proxy purchasers and I’m sure NoKo would love to purchase some with funny money or just barter for it with arms and ammo. Those willing to do the enrichment would love to have an additional supplier of feedstock. Of course Syria has an enrichment facility they swindled from the Swedes… gotta have Homs to have it.

Makes you wonder if Saddam was bartering some of it, too?

Right here in America, which ISIS has vowed to attack and our southern border is wide open. If thousands of illegal immigrants can find their way into this country with ease, so can terrorists.

When one of the 40 year old children swarming over the border like cockroaches carries over a suitcase dirty bomb and murders 10,000 innocent Americans, which Bush will the media blame?

‘In comparison to other global threats, the near collapse of societies in the hemisphere with the associated drug and (undocumented immigrant) flow are frequently viewed to be of low importance. Many argue these threats are not existential and do not challenge our national security. I disagree.’

Muslim Terrorists Paying $50,000 to Sneak Across US Southern Border
Now to add fuel to the fire, Greg Corombos is reporting that people are paying as much as $50,000 to cross the southern border and that they are typically from the Middle East or China: A filmmaker with extensive knowledge of the current border crisis says this chaos is exactly what President Obama wants and planned for, and he says the current media fixation on abandoned children means criminals, drug smugglers and terrorists are coming to the United States without even being noticed.

“I can tell you from the people I speak to in the Border Patrol who are in the intelligence unit, they have told me that gang members are receiving as much as $50,000 per head to bring a person through. Those people are typically from the Middle East or from China,” said Lynch, who predicts the people waltzing into the country will perpetrate an attack on the U.S. that will rival or exceed Sept. 11.http://freedomoutpost.com/2014/07/muslim-terrorists-are-paying-50000-to-sneak-across-us-southern-border/

Who is the ISIS puppetmaster?

sadatoni on July 10, 2014 at 4:20 PM

I have seen some posts saying if something happened, obama would be run out of town on a rail

i disagree, he would do the Rahn Emmanual of “never let a crisis got to waste”, he would declare martial law, and void elections for the “duration of the crisis” and be a dictator for like a decade, minimum.
He would try to turn america into the socialist police state the libs have been drooling about for decades.
With them of course on top and in charge.
