Perry: Border crisis is Obama’s Katrina

posted at 12:01 pm on July 10, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Rick Perry and Barack Obama finally had a face-to-face meeting as the border crisis continued, but it left the Texas governor unimpressed. Obama told Perry to get Republicans to back his $3.7 billion funding request, but again declined to make the trip to the border for himself to see the situation for himself. Perry told CBS News’ Major Garrett that Obama attempted to shrug off the trip by stressing that he’s sent aides to see the situation, a claim that Perry says does not demonstrate leadership, especially in a crisis. Americans expect their President to show up — and cites the Hurricane Katrina example that many have come to use as a measuring stick:

Perry told CBS News that Americans need to see their president on the border.

“The first thing I asked him when I sat on Marine One was, ‘I hope you’ll come to the border.’ And he responded and said, ‘Hey, listen, my guys have been down there six times.’ Your guys are one thing, but you’re another,” Perry said.

He said if the president visited the border, Americans would feel like he cared about what was going on there.

“That’s what presidents do. That’s what leaders do. They show up,” he said. “They interact and they see for themselves what’s going on so I think it is very important for him.” …

Perry warned the border situation could spin out of control, and evoked memories of federal mismanagement after Hurricane Katrina.

“As I recall President Bush got chastised greatly for not showing up in New Orleans when Katrina occurred,” Perry said.

“The parallel for me is that when we know a hurricane is coming, we put things into place so that we can deal with it,” he said. “I have told this administration and others have told this administration for years that this was exactly what was going to happen.”

On the funding request, Perry hasn’t taken the bait from Obama, and so far neither have Republicans on Capitol Hill. They are working on their own emergency funding bill to address the situation, but Senator Marco Rubio’s comments to me yesterday show that they are taking Obama’s request with a significant amount of skepticism. “Very little of it is for actual improvements on the border,” Rubio explained. “There’s even money in there to deal with wildfires, things of that nature.” Some of the money that is earmarked for short-term care of the children will likely remain, but expect Republicans to offer a bill that shows up at the border in a figurative sense more than Obama has in any sense.

Perry also finds some agreement on CNN this morning, as Noah noted earlier, but it’s worth another look. Noting the substantial symbolic nature of the presidency, John King’s panel also expects to see the President show up in a crisis. They also scoffed at Obama’s sudden disdain for photo ops:

“I’m not interested in photo-ops” should qualify as a fact-check highlight for 2014, if not a finalist for Lie of the Year.

Update: Well, maybe Obama should have embargoed the photo op here:

Well, sure. Most of the rest of us laughed at that too.

Don’t be ridiculous:

Some (including some Democrats) are saying that the crisis on the Southwestern border is President Obama’s Hurricane Katrina. But there are at least two fundamental differences between the illegal immigration fiasco and Katrina. First, the response to Hurricane Katrina was actually the largest and the fastest response to any natural disaster in history, as Popular Mechanics, as I recall, later documented. Second, President Bush didn’t cause the hurricane.

Choomie figures he’s had his lat election, so nothing can happen.

I guess he doesn’t realize a former POTUS could still be brought up on charges.

And he responded and said, ‘Hey, listen, my guys have been down there six times.’

By contrast, Churchill wanted to go in with the first troops in Normandy.

No wonder he wanted to get rid of that bust.

Let’s hope the GOP funding plan includes a line for the purchase of empathy bears. We wouldn’t want these invaders think they were unwelcome or something.

Seriously, the guy sitting right across from the rat-eared wonder is a Dallas judge who insists that these invaders are nothing more than scared innocent children. It, of course, is a lie and every single Democrat know it. I can’t name a single Democrat who is truly demanding entry to all these invaders for purely altruistic and compassionate reasons. These parasites and their parents are part of the Dems plan to turn red states blue (no matter how loudly that dirty judge quotes Romans or idiots talk about showing up to hand out empathy bears).

BO said it all in 2008 when he asked reporters, “Can’t a guy just eat his waffle?” Golf, vacations and fundraisers … and watching ESPN… are priorities.

Whenever he proclaims that he’s making one of his “pivots” to refocus on a serious issue it’s merely another distraction for the peasants.

All these kids? Really? Why can’t they go back?

The woman is wrong about billions being “borrowed” from the White House- as if these invaders are being housed with Obamabucks or something- but he bigger point is spot on.

Why are these invaders getting preferential treatment over American children who live with the daily violence of Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, or New Orleans? A three year old got shot in the middle of a drug-related dispute in New Orleans this week. Where is the compassion for these children even as illegal aliens are storming the border and demanding billions in resources from an already too generous nation?

And BTW, some of the articles talk about “parents” who bundle up their child and give $3,000 for passage up to the US. How many American families living in in the midst of daily violence of an inner-city have $3,000 to spend?

hawkeye54 on July 10, 2014 at 12:35 PM

Pouty boy doesn’t look so good in the picture, either.

jim56 on July 10, 2014 at 12:14 PM

Sweet comback, jimbo. Which one of the 2 is showing up in polls as the worst president in 70 years?

I know. I saw him last night and today he’ll continue. He needs to frame it better.

I was talking about oafbama getting away with too little, if the meme that this is just Katrina takes root, which the media love already.

Schadenfreude on July 10, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Sorry. It’s not Katrina.

jim56 on July 10, 2014 at 12:14 PM

You’re right. Bush wasn’t responsible for the hurricane.

Cool, I like that idea even better. :)

hawkeye54 on July 10, 2014 at 12:39 PM

But, the alliance of good R/Cs, not racists, people who sincerely want to help minorities and the poor, and those minorities who want to succeed and better their and their kids’ lives, c/b lethal.

This illegal invasion might have that effect. Heck, if I’d put on my long since retired altruism hat I might agitate a few million. Lord knows that I can.

Schadenfreude on July 10, 2014 at 12:31 PM

So far, the administration keeps trying to dump a few hundred of these parasites on some town with zero financial resources to pay the bill for stuff like medical treatment or food. The $4B demand does little beyond making life more comfortable for these invaders. Nothing to fundamentally stop the influx of illegals.

Bush said himself that the flyover photo was a big mistake…It allowed the media to manipulate what Bush was doing about Katrina.

workingclass artist

Which, ironically, was also a media manipulated response…one of many surrenders that occurred during the Bush admin.

xblade on July 10, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Obama asks for $72,000 per cute little 6XL balding child.

Send them back, first class, and save over $3.7 billion dollars, keep TB out of the classroom, and protect LEGAL children form death and misery.

Obama and the democrats care more for illegal aliens than for our own children. The GOP should make that clear at every interview.

jukin3 on July 10, 2014 at 12:41 PM

They are working on their own emergency funding bill to address the situation, but Senator Marco Rubio’s comments to me yesterday show that they are taking Obama’s request with a significant amount of skepticism.

Here’s where the GOP screws this up. While they are working silently behind closed doors, Obama and Dems suck up all the oxygen with Obama’s absurd request.

Get some honest broker like Coburn out in front of cameras with one pie graph, one bar graph, and a table of numbers in a column and succinctly explain exactly what Obama’s crock-of-shite supplemental is all about. The GOP phucks this media game up all the time.

BuckeyeSam on July 10, 2014 at 12:41 PM

Well, sure. Most of the rest of us laughed at that too.

Now a train derails that was bringing illegals to the border. obama could quickly change this by simply closing the border

hawkeye54 on July 10, 2014 at 12:36 PM

That’s just playing the odds when it comes to this administration. Sorta like when Marion Barry received $40K from an unnamed donor to give turkeys to his constituents in DC’s Ward 8. The question wasn’t who gave Barry $40K it was what Marion did with the $80K he got!

Schadenfreude on July 10, 2014 at 12:43 PM

I hope he never goes to the border to address this issue. The optics….or lack thereof….can only help us.

xblade on July 10, 2014 at 12:44 PM

Does anyone know the identities of the others in the pictures?

Telling that Perry is relegated to a side seat rather than across from Obama and right in Obama’s face?

BuckeyeSam on July 10, 2014 at 12:44 PM

This is not a disaster until the media says it is and if there are no pictures, there is no film at 11. Obama wins. Again.

Cindy Munford on July 10, 2014 at 12:44 PM

They want their kids to have it better, just like you do.

Schadenfreude on July 10, 2014 at 12:33 PM

Perhaps. Some, certainly. I’d say the evidence and statistics would generally suggest otherwise.

It is absolutely clear that they will “Uncle Tom”/ridicule any black ‘good leader’ who dares actually say what they need to hear rather than what they want to hear, however. Actually, where’s the ‘good leader’ of any race that’s gotten close to 50% of the black vote? Maybe I’m just forgetting it.

hawkeye54 on July 10, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Oh, yeah. That was obvious from the beginning. Dem tactics are terribly transparent.

Next up…. Pelosi talking more about God, human potential and that the Dems are always motivated by the best interests of the “children” – as long as they constitute another voting block for them.

Everyone else is on their own and will have to foot the bill.

jukin3 on July 10, 2014 at 12:41 PM

Hey! Empathy bears are for illegal aliens not the children stuck in crappy inner-city schools who worry about getting caught in the middle of a shoot out between rival gangs. Democrats already have the votes in the inner city. This is about future votes for the DNC and that starts with rewarding the parasites who are invading our nation.

Happy Nomad on July 10, 2014 at 12:47 PM
