Joe Scarborough: Glenn Beck is following Jesus’s playbook in providing humanitarian aid to young illegals

posted at 7:21 pm on July 10, 2014 by Allahpundit

Via the Blaze, I’ll leave the WWJD debate on this one to the non-atheists. Do note, though, that it’s not just centrists like Morning Joe who are backing Beck up. Erick Erickson:

I am a citizen of the United States and I appreciate people are yearning to breathe free in America. But I am a citizen of the United States and want our laws enforced, our borders secured, and these illegal aliens — some not yearning to breathe free, but here with other motives — sent home.

I am also a citizen of the Kingdom of God. And I want these people, particularly the children, to know Christian charity and love and to go home understanding that we are willing for them to come — but to come legally and lawfully through secure borders.

What Glenn Beck is doing is the kind thing to do. He is using his own money, while calling on the government to enforce the law. Conservatives and Christians can both want American borders secured and our laws enforced. But we should also be willing to show personal and private grace, mercy, and charity to the many troubled souls who have come here as they have.

The Dallas judge who agreed to house 2,000 illegal children in the county said this to MSNBC:

“I think that people need to put their partisan politics aside. If you want to listen to a leader, go ask your faith leader what you should do in a situation where children are alone and feel abandoned and are terrified in overcrowded conditions; where there are thirty children in a glass holding cell, pressing their faces against the glass so they can see their brothers and sisters who are moved away from them; where there are babies crying for their mother while being changed by border patrol agents and it smells like body odor because the children aren’t bathed more than every few days. And ask yourself: what’s the right thing to do? What does your Bible tell you? What do the words on the Statue of Liberty tell you? What do your American values tell you? If we stop looking at these children as others and invaders and aliens and we look at them as children and as human beings, then we’ll know how to handle this humanitarian crisis.”

Beck’s critics are mad because, in theory, the more comfortable we make it for illegals to come, the more likely they are to make the trip. All markets respond to incentives and the illegal immigration market is no exception. How much incentive is he really adding, though, by sending soccer balls and candy bars or whatever to the border? The feds are providing most of the humanitarian relief while these kids are in BP custody and there’s no plausible presidential candidate from either party who’d change that. You could clone Ted Cruz, run him on both halves of the ticket, and the most draconian thing he’d end up doing would be to push Congress to bring back summary deportations by reversing the law that entitles kids to stay here while they’re awaiting a hearing. The fact that, right now, they can stay (“permiso”) is the core incentive. Beck may be increasing that incentive, but marginally. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at the amnesty shills in the White House and Congress who refuse to change that law for political reasons. The thought that her kid can play with a Beck-brand soccer ball for a few hours after crossing the border before he’s put on a plane right back to Tegucigalpa isn’t going to encourage a mom in Honduras to hand her eight-year-old over to a coyote. Believing that he’ll have de facto amnesty if he makes it to Texas might.

A better knock on Beck, I think, is to say that he should be doing this in a low-key way. He has an enormous megaphone, and this week that megaphone’s being amplified by media segments like this one by admiring centrists and lefties. If that filters through to Mexican and Central American media, that rich Americans are mobilizing to help the kids coming across, it really might add some marginal extra incentive on whether to make the trip. Better to provide the aid under the radar so that it attracts less attention. But the answer to that, I guess, is that Beck’s aiming for more than just his own private donation here; he wants to inspire his listeners to be charitable too, and he wants it known for political purposes that even big-name righties who support stronger borders aren’t the heartless caricature that lefties make them out to be. That’s fine, but the price of that is the added incentive to cross the border. Let’s not kid ourselves.

If he had done it in a low key way without telling anyone on his show and they found out, people would have labeled him backstabing RINO. He was right to be upfront. He can’t control people’s reaction to him giving balls for kids to play.

If Beck wants to give soccer balls and teddy bears away to illegals that’s fine since he’s using private money. What I don’t like is him calling out conservatives who disagree with him right off the bat. All he’s doing is giving the left a big bat to hit us over the head with and he knows that.

That would have been a much better idea. But the real problem is Obama refusing to secure the border. This problem will not go away, if anything it will get worse.

Yes. Beck is showboating, which crushes the ridiculous meme that he’s just being a “Good Samaritan”.

So, how large a camera crew will Beck be taking with him, when he hands out his teddy bears and soccer balls to obama’s trafficked illegals/invaders?

Pork-Chop on July 10, 2014 at 7:33 PM

I quoted this column by Todd Starnes yesterday:

Feds: Pastors not welcome at immigration camps

The Obama administration is not letting non-political Christian charity into the camps.

These pastors offered physical help and spiritual counseling and were turned away.

This entire crisis is a political situation controlled by the Obama administration. I have no idea what will happen with Beck’s donations, but at the moment I’m sure Obama is happy that Beck is perpetuating the myth that conservatives are not compassionate.

What a cruel government to encourage minors to leave their families and break them up all for political gain.

The children are not to blame.

Their parents are enticed to do evil and cannot resist doing so.

Our government is doing the enticing.

It is seeking to break up families, destroy treaties, corrode the law and all for political gain.

Earlier today Wigglesworth linked to this article from Breitbart.

John Nolte makes some great points and has excellent insight.

Border Crisis: What Glenn Beck Did Wrong

Therefore, the truly compassionate thing to do is to ensure you’re not doing anything that might encourage more parents to send their unaccompanied children on that harrowing trek. And it is not insane, unreasonable, or lacking in compassion to argue that news of a major American media figure greeting children at the border with toys could be used by the drug smugglers and human traffickers already exploiting these kids as a way to recruit more.

Beck obviously doesn’t believe his acts of charity will exploited in that way.

But rather than acknowledge the other side has a reasonable argument against what he’s doing that is every bit as humane as his, he chose to puff himself up as a martyr and handed the likes of “Morning Joe” ready-made talking points to bash his own supporters and conservatives in general.

INC on July 10, 2014 at 7:37 PM

It’s easier for a foreign illegal child to cross our borders and live, than for an unborn child in this country to make it out of the womb.

portlandon on July 10, 2014 at 7:37 PM

We are being played

“On Monday, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Guatemalan president Otto Perez Molina held a joint press conference in Playas de Catazaja, Mexico, to officially announce an agreement to make it easier for those making the illegal journey to the United States from Central America, to cross into Mexico.

The Southern Border Program to Improve Passage, will provide for more border checkpoints along Mexico’s border with Guatemala, and offer more protection and even emergency medical care to those making their way north. The illegal aliens will receive a so-called Regional Visitor’s Card, according to El Universal.

Officially, the program will grant the cards to only illegal aliens from Guatemala and Belize, allowing them to remain in Mexico’s southern states for 72 hours (more than enough time to reach the U.S./Mexican border by train). While, those two countries share a border with Mexico, the program will undoubtedly benefit anyone who makes it to the border, which would explain why our Border Patrol stations are currently overflowing with illegal aliens from El Salvador and Honduras as well.

The program will also give special protection and even financial assistance to unaccompanied minors now pouring across our border. Of course, these efforts, chiefly by the Mexican government, will only increase the number of illegal aliens coming to this country by the thousands, now on a daily basis.

The official announcement only confirms what many of us have known all along…the current chaos on the border which the Obama administration has sympathetically (and dishonestly) characterized as a “humanitarian crisis,” only exists due to collusion between the governments of Mexico, Guatemala and likely the United States….”

Also, as a health issue, it shows ignorance and poor judgment to bring teddy bears–or any stuffed animal–to camps because of the lice and scabies present. The bears couldn’t be distributed until the camps were completely free of parasites (not going to happen anytime soon) because if given out immediately the bears would need to be sprayed or discarded.

America has almost always responded generously to humanitarian crisis (see the SS St. Louis in 1939 for one exception).

But that isn’t what is going on here. We are being invaded and Glen Beck and like minded idiots want to hand out bottles of water and empathy bears. Too bad the administration lets vets die even as they coddle these filthy criminals.

Mark Levin pointed out one such case this evening. The government paid to fly a group of illegal teens from Houston to their relatives in Atlanta. These are not the babies fleeing violence that Beck, Noah Rothman, and other idiots are defending. These were teens joining their parents in the United States. One 17-year-old and his 15-year-old sister were greeted by mom and dad after the trip from Guatemala. ICE told dad to get the kids enrolled in the Marietta (GA) schools. Which means now the taxpayers of that city are paying for these filthy invaders and that requires cash- not empathy bears or good intentions. And BTW- none of them are going anywhere except down to the local courthouse to sign up to vote for Democrats.

Happy Nomad on July 10, 2014 at 7:54 PM

The Bible condemns people who give charity in order to gain praise from others. The Bible denounces such people as hypocrites. I would have much more respect if Beck had done this quietly rather then tooting his own horn. It would also help if he had a record of giving Teddy Bears and hot meals to poor children who are law abiding American citizens.

Hera on July 10, 2014 at 7:55 PM

WWJD? more often than not = What do I think is a really neat-o idea.

People tend to forget that Jesus wasn’t always “Mr. Nice Guy” by our standards. When a sick Samaritan woman came to Him asking to be healed His first response was “Why should what is meant for the children go to the dogs?” Not really what some might call a “Christian” response.

He did eventually heal her after He got her response, which may have been His intent all along, we can never know.

Jesus also yelled at people for following Him just to get food. They left and He was cool with that.

The Apostle Paul also famously said “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.” And went into some detail about the damage that can be done giving people free stuff.

Trump: Illegal Immigrants Are Getting Treated Better than Vets
By Andrew Johnson

The thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children are being treated better than American veterans and a Marine stuck in Mexico, Donald Trump said on Laura Ingraham’s radio show.

“You know, the only one we can’t get back into the country is our Marine,” Trump said on Thursday, referring to U.S. Marine reservist Andrew Tahmooressi, who mistakenly crossed in to Mexico with firearms and is being held there by the Mexican government. “I mean, everyone else is flowing in from Mexico and the Marine is stuck in prison.”

Additionally, needy veterans continue to suffer from through the widespread mismanagement at the Department of Veterans Affairs, he said, “but I guarantee we’ll take care of these [immigrants] if they come.”

Trump warned of the consequences of allowing recently arrived illegal-immigrant children to stay in the country while top-notch students from other countries are denied entrance to the U.S. or must go through the legal process.

“This influx is killing the country,” he said. “It’s killing the country.”

INC on July 10, 2014 at 8:04 PM

Nolte’s article on Beck, linked to by a number of commenters, is spot on. I would add that there are numerous charitable organizations in Honduras and Guatemala, sponsored by American Christians, that are working to ameliorate the conditions in those countries that are allegedly causing the children to emigrate. Why not donate to them? That would send the correct signal – that the proper place for charity and reform is in the originating countries, and that the kiddies need to stay home. If these budding genius’s are the future, as we hear ad nauseam, let them devote their energy and intellect into pulling their own nations out of the Third World sewer, instead of flushing ours into it.

Beck is a drama queen and a fool, and loves to play the victim. His show is a real joke now, although I did enjoy hearing how his father had been raped 368 times by every male authority figure that he met from the age of 15 on. There is real anger in this country across the political spectrum, and a real opportunity to harness that anger and turn the country around before it is too late, and the people we are counting on to help lead the charge are pulling cheap, ego massaging political stunts. We are so screwed.

Beck is in the process of morphing a into a Jimmy Swaggert like character with the crying, the evangelizing, the asking for donations. He is clearly in the process of losing his mind on the airwaves for the world to see.

His constant references to Martin Luther King and Gandhi, and new outreach to liberals, along with the above mentioned metamorphosis he is in the midst of, have made him someone I have written off as being not worth listening to.

Beck wealthy enough to have his armed security detail keep the unwashed masses running across the border away from his home and family as he asks us to help pay for our country’s assisted suicide.

He should have stuck with being a morning zoo jock.

WWJD? more often than not = What do I think is a really neat-o idea.

29Victor on July 10, 2014 at 7:55 PM

Well said. Why are these invaders leaving their own homes and heading North? Because the United States welfare system is far better than whatever the hell is available in El Salvador. I’m not convinced that Christ would support sloth. This diaspora of Central American young people will have consequences for those nations. Fast forward a decade or two when nobody is taking care of the old because all their young were embraced by Glenn Beck as illegal invaders.

Happy Nomad on July 10, 2014 at 8:19 PM

Rockshine, we should reach out to sane liberals on a few issues we agree with. That is how common core is failing. Conservatives and liberals are reaching out to one another on this one subject.
Lincoln in his second inaugural address pointed out how we should reach out to the other side.
You are saying Lincoln is wrong on reaching out to the other side.

BroncosRock on July 10, 2014 at 8:19 PM

They will not come over because of what Glenn is doing. They will come over because of Barack and John and Mitch letting them stay here and get free money.

BroncosRock on July 10, 2014 at 8:06 PM

They are coming over because obama invited them, and he has buses waiting at the border, to traffic them to communities across America. The border is wide open … 300,000 have already come this year alone … hundreds of thousands more are on their way in the next few weeks … the total will be in the millions before obama is finished (added to the 20-30 million who are already here) …

This is a full-scale invasion of America – which doesn’t seem to bother Glenn in the least.

Is it CHARITY, or, GIVING AID and COMFORT to the ENEMY?

Pork-Chop on July 10, 2014 at 8:23 PM

I don’t mind giving the kids a show, fresh clothes, a hot meal and medical attention to alleviate their immediate situation. Provided they are then sent right back home.

rbj on July 10, 2014 at 7:38 PM

This is how I feel.

But that isn’t what they want is it? They want $60,000 and a lawyer for each kid. Jesus could have fed the kids on a few fishes and a loaf of bread but the Government isn’t as efficient. And I don’t appreciate having Republicans muddle the issue with insinuations that we are not being compassionate. We didn’t ask them to come or create their problems at home. We didn’t ask their parents to come or to send them so they could support them from America. And while were talking Jesus, Jesus would smite the crap out of the employers and the politicians who are bringing these kids here for their own greed.

You can continue to try to justify Beck’s actions all you like. This is not a “good” thing, Broncos Rick. Beck may have gotten the optics he was looking for, but the Liberals will use it to beat Conservatives into the grave politically for failing to adhere to their “humanitarian” standards.

Simply because we see it as being a higher priority for rule of law to stand rather than to give “compassion” to every Tomas, Ricardo, and Aurelio that crosses our border.

For how long? And how much of it can our nation take at this point?

Even if Beck meant well, it wasn’t the wisest choice to make in this situation.

Glenn Beck profits handsomely from Food Insurance. He’s not doing it out of the kindness of his heart, nor is he the only one profiting handsomely from advertising for gold clearinghouses. Both of those rackets happen to be neck-deep in the LDS church. If you believe that’s just a coincidence, I have a bridge to sell you…

gryphon202 on July 10, 2014 at 8:28 PM

We’ve got plenty of military cargo planes. We can charter commercial aviation. Time for a reverse “Berlin Air Lift” where we load the invaders up and send them back to wherever the hell they came from.

That would send a message like no other.

I’m starting to chafe a little under this sanctimonious — poop-storm.

I can’t think of anything less Christ-like than standing on a street corner, wailing, to be seen by people wailing, and that’s before the disgusting holier than thou tirades start. This mess is coming from talking heads and writers, near and far, and it needs to end.

These kids are not your pets. You don’t get to decide to keep them or set them loose. Also, we don’t make or enforce law according to your need to be seen loving children, and your need to be thought of as “good people” is pointless right now. While you are buying toys and reading children’s books, someone needs to be busy doing something about stopping the influx and getting these kids home. Those of us too interested in fixing the actual problem to join you in your maudlin show are not bad people “who want children to die.”

– You are empathetic people. You feel me?

Axe on July 10, 2014 at 8:30 PM

Polishing your halo and making sure the whole world knows about it is what the Alan Alda-George Clooney types like to do and Beck, jackass that he is, seems to be one of them.

That, however, isn’t always the responsible or even the right thing to do.

We aren’t doing these kids any favors by keeping them here where they can’t be treated for the diseases they have, where even theChoom Gang can’t find places enough to warehouse them, where they’ll be prey to exploitation by the coyotes, the gangs, the politicians, and the “relatives” with whom they’re placed.

Send ‘em home and try to make sure they get some decent care when they get there.

Children are being made objects by intent: that is to destroy our feelings towards children by victimizing them, which puts parents in the position of making them victims and the politicians in the position of mainstreaming such treatment. That destroys the family system not just at home but abroad as well, giving false hopes by making children the object of policy.

If we are marginalized, those being enticed to it are being corrupted and destroyed by that very same policy. Once it is permissible to use children for this, it will not, indeed it CANNOT stop there as politicians will exploit children for every single thing they can think of and destroy protections around them to do so.

That destroys the family unit here and abroad.

It destroys not just our Nation but the one that allows such parents to do such things, and corrode the meaning of Nation.

They want a world without borders so that they can rule over all with tyranny.

Instead they will get barbarism, war, warlords and a dark age with Iron Times.

Imperialism drives this: the elites to take over All by destroying everything from the family on up. It is plain and easy to see. They think they will get a glorious rendering, a high and mighty caste that shall rule the Earth.

Instead they will get ashes and such a fire shall consume them as readily as those they seek to destroy.

ajacksonian on July 10, 2014 at 8:44 PM

Beck very well could go broke doing all of this, He is neither Christ nor the Government. If he were to go broke. Will he regret it all? Would we have respect for the Man if he tossed it ll away? Its his money and his right to proceed. Beck aside the real shame is on this administration. They have baited folks here for what I believe are completely nefarious reasons. Yet they have no shame. Just blame. The sooner 0 leaves the stage the sooner we as a Nation can again follow the rule of law. Not the rules of emotion. Not Alinsky rules.
