Sally Kohn: ‘This is not a border crisis’

posted at 1:21 pm on July 9, 2014 by Noah Rothman

This is odd.

In an appearance on CNN addressing the crisis at the southern border, CNN contributor and The Daily Beast columnist was asked about the “optics” of the president failing to go to the border to see the situation with his own eyes. While Kohn said that she would go to the border in between Democratic fundraisers if she were the president, but simultaneously suggested that to demand he do so – an increasingly frequent phenomenon on the left – represents a double standard.

That was not, however, the oddest of odd moments which occurred in this short segment. Seconds later, Kohn insisted that the border crisis was not a border crisis at all. In fact, she seemed believed that it could be more accurately labeled a bureaucratic crisis.

“This is not a border crisis,” Kohn said. “These kids are coming to the border, they’re getting stopped, the border’s working.”

“Republicans are trying to turn this into a narrative of ‘Oh, the border isn’t working,” she continued.

“They’re not slipping through holes on the border,” Kohn concluded. “It’s just not happening.”

That is a bizarrely unfounded position to hold, and it was one that New York Times’ conservative columnist Ross Douthat confoundingly did not push back against.

So, let’s turn to that beacon of conservative thought, Alexandra Pelosi, for a brief rebuttal. In her recent documentary, Pelosi chronicled how human traffickers move women and children to the border and hustle them over fences and walls with simple devices like ladders. This, it would seem, counters Kohn’s assertion that there are no “holes on the border.”

Moreover, Kohn’s claim that these people are being caught after crossing is also something Pelosi addressed in her documentary. In interviews with countless, desperate immigrants, she learned that most believe that they are finally safe when they are picked up by border enforcement authorities. Pelosi said, in fact, that most border crossers simply wait to be picked up after they have made it across, believing falsely that they will be processed and sent to California or Texas to integrate into American society.

“I worry, in all of this, that we could be facilitating human trafficking,” Pelosi fretted in a recent interview on MSNBC.

But one does not need to appeal to the empirical experience of Pelosi’s immigration documentary to rebut Kohn’s claim that the border is, in fact, secure. The logic of the fact that, as she conceded, America’s processing facilities are being overwhelmed by waves of illegal immigrants suggests they got here… somehow.

UPDATE: Kohn recently took to twitter to clarify her thought:

To which New York Post columnist Robert George replied:

Who pays the bills…

And of course they are trying to turn this into a “child crisis”. It is an old leftist move…”what about the children”.

They know women fall for that stuff all the time.

William Eaton on July 9, 2014 at 1:56 PM

The Democratic left will either ignore a real crises (i.e. families sending their kids to the USA illegally) or manufacture fake ones (global warming/climate change; former “crises” of butter is bad, now good; salt is bad, now ok; etc.). The leftist dems live for media attention and they get it.

WHere do some of these people come from? It’s like a new speaker a day. IF this is being choreographed, whoever is doing it, is doing an excellent job.

Once more the Obama Regime and his enablers in the Lame Stream Media (plus just about everybody else) are feeding us an outright LIE about this crisis.

Try to find a picture, video or anything else that actually shows CHILDREN (not teenagers) who are really “unaccompanied”.

Do NOT go by posed shots in the camps and shelters.
Look at the moving groups (off buses or planes or just walking between places)
Less than TWENTY PERCENT of the invading horde are actually children (under age 12) and you will NOT find an image of them without some kind of escorting invader - mother, grandmother, sister, brother whatever.
So the whole “unaccompanied children” routine is a LIE!

Kohn has her Rachel Maddow haircut.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just that they go out of there way to look like extreme liberal / militant feminist types, and that’s a fringe. So her highly partisan appearance makes her leftist politics clear, and the left wants open borders, completely open, so this is in fact not a crisis to them. And btw, as far as amnesty, remember that EVERY DEMOCRAT IS FOR AMNESTY, every single one as far as I know. What that means is that they know amnesty is a sweet deal for their careers. It’s time we circle the wagons in unity against amnesty. And boot Rubio onto his rear. And the rest of the R amnesty shills, get them out! Vote for the Dem if need be to purge the ranks.

anotherJoe on July 9, 2014 at 2:04 PM

“HOUSTON, Texas–Breitbart Texas has learned that hospitals based in Southern Texas are being utilized to evaluate and treat illegal immigrants before they are sent to housing facilities around the country. The revelation could help justify claims that the tidal wave of Central Americans entering the U.S. illegally each day will clog up U.S. hospitals.

Margaret Althoff-Olivas, Director of Public Affairs for University Medical Center (UMC) of El Paso, told Breitbart Texas, “The U.S. Border Patrol (BP) has established a rotating schedule for area hospitals to medically evaluate detainees associated with the recent influx of Central American immigrants. According to the BP, all must be medically cleared before being transferred to detention centers.”
UMC El Paso Public Affairs Coordinator Renee Saavedra added that “five El Paso hospitals are currently treating [the] immigrants.”

Most illegal immigrants are captured in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley (RGV) and it is unclear if they are being screened prior to being sent to El Paso and other U.S. cities for processing and further screening, or if the secondary location screening is the first medical treatment the illegal immigrants are receiving. If the illegal immigrants are being transported via chartered commercial airliners prior to being screened, any U.S. citizen who flies on the aircraft afterwards could potentially face health risks.
Several Texas politicians have spoken out on the effects the illegal immigrants could have on public health.

Several diseases have already been identified within the migrant population. In June Breitbart Texas reported that one Central American who entered the U.S. illegally was confirmed as having the Swine Flu, also known as the H1N1 flu. In response, 2,000 H1N1 vaccinations were brought to the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, where more than 1,000 illegal immigrant minors are currently staying.
Congressman Louie Gohmert told Breitbart Texas that President Obama’s U.S. Department of Health and Human Services–the agency currently caring for many of the unaccompanied minors–is not doing an adequate job of screening and treating diseases.

“I can tell you that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is not taking charge of the undocumented children in any kind of reasonable time frame as they are absolutely required to do,” Gohmert told Breitbart Texas. “It is becoming more and more apparent that the Obama administration’s reckless disregard for enforcing this nation’s laws at the border has become a reckless disregard for human health and life. Even when they spend a hundred times more than necessary, they can’t even build a website.”

Carried by this tsunami of illegals are the invisible “travelers” our politicians don’t like to mention: diseases the U.S. had controlled or virtually eradicated: tuberculosis (TB), Chagas disease, dengue fever, hepatitis, malaria, measles, plus more. I have been working on medical projects in Central and South America since 2009, so I am aware of problems these countries face from such diseases.

A public health crisis, the likes of which I have not seen in my lifetime, is looming. Hardest hit by exposures to these difficult-to-treat diseases will be elderly, children, immunosuppressed cancer-patients, patients with chronic lung disease or congestive heart failure. Drug-resistant tuberculosis is the most serious risk, but even diseases like measles can cause severe complications and death in older or immunocompromised patients.

TB is highly contagious – you catch it anywhere around infected people: schools, malls, buses, etc. The drug-resistant TB now coming across our borders requires a complex, extremely expensive treatment regimen that has serious side effects and a low cure rate.

Chagas, or “kissing bug” disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is carried by the triatomine bug that transmits disease to humans. Although “kissing bugs” are already here, they are not as widespread as in Latin America. Right now, Chagas disease is uncommon in the U.S., so many doctors do not think to check for it.

Chagas causes debilitating fatigue, headaches, body aches, nausea/vomiting, liver and spleen enlargement, swollen glands, loss of appetite. When Chagas reaches the chronic phase, medications will not cure it. It can kill by arrhythmias, congestive heart failure or sudden cardiac arrest.

Vaccine-preventable diseases like chicken pox, measles and whooping cough spread like wildfire among unvaccinated children. Other illnesses, along with scabies and head lice, also thrive as children are transported by bus and herded into crowded shelters – courtesy of the federal government. One of the mottos I’ve heard for Air Force fighter pilots, when out on the town, is “go ugly early”.

Really you dumbass? So all that video of kids being taken to various ICE facilities IN THE UNITED STATES is bogus?

GarandFan on July 9, 2014 at 2:29 PM

(hand wave) those are not the children you’re looking for….

dentarthurdent on July 9, 2014 at 2:34 PM

No, it’s not a border crisis, it’s a public health and national security crisis, you twit.

(or is it twat?)

PS That river in Egypt must flow right through Ms Kohn’s bladder.

formwiz on July 9, 2014 at 2:35 PM

“This is not a border crisis,” Kohn said. “These kids are coming to the border, they’re getting stopped, the border’s working.”

“Republicans are trying to turn this into a narrative of ‘Oh, the border isn’t working,” Kohn continued.

“They’re not slipping through holes on the border,” Kohn concluded. “It’s just not happening.”

.
Who’s up for kidnapping Ms Kohn and “dragging” her, kicking and screaming, down there ?

I’m pretty sure that is also ConstantineXI unstated response. You can call us misogynists all you want, but when a supposedly educated women demands the rest of us pay for her incredibly expensive contraception habits one can only assume she lives most of her life on her back.

Not a crisis:

A filmmaker with extensive knowledge of the current border crisis says this chaos is exactly what President Obama wants and planned for, and he says the current media fixation on abandoned children means criminals, drug smugglers and terrorists are coming to the United States without even being noticed.

Dennis Michael Lynch directed and produced “They Come to America” and “They Come to America II” and has extensive, daily contact with U.S. Border Patrol agents about the true state of the U.S.-Mexico border. He said there are essentially four groups of people pouring across the border: families of various sizes, unaccompanied minors, drug smugglers and career criminals and terrorists. Lynch said while the media focus on the kids, really bad people are easily slipping into the country.

“I can tell you from the people I speak to in the Border Patrol who are in the intelligence unit, they have told me that gang members are receiving as much as $50,000 per head to bring a person through. Those people are typically from the Middle East or from China,” said Lynch, who predicts the people waltzing into the country will perpetrate an attack on the U.S. that will rival or exceed Sept. 11.

“Some of the illegal immigrants surging across the U.S. border from Central America and creating a growing humanitarian crisis may be wearing tennis shoes emblazoned with images in praise of President Barack Obama, according to Dennis Michael Lynch at his website, DLM Daily.

“I’ve received two sets of photos from two contacts at the border,” Lynch explains. “I cannot validate the authenticity of the pictures. But I can say the agents who sent these to me is among a handful of agents who have sent me accurate information over the past few months.”

The agent works at a processing center in South Texas that is managing the massive inflow of illegal immigrants, Lynch says.

“For people who may think this is a fake picture, notice the shoe laces. We make everyone remove their laces,” Lynch’s unidentified contact said.

It’s not clear who would have distributed the shoes…”

I understand that charities have been dictated to by HHS and their denominational higher-ups to care for these chillins, AND keep their mouths shut about the happenings !
One of them called Rush, defying those orders.

pambi on July 9, 2014 at 1:58 PM

No, pambi, it’s worse.

The gov’t pays the churches, for each invader, with your taxes.

The churches urge the fools to take the invaders in “for 30 days only”, if the fools believe this they deserve to get lice and all that comes with all diseases.

Soon they’ll demand that you all take them in. The 3rd amendment only protects you from NOT having to house Soldiers.

Work harder, fools. YOUR taxes are needed to destroy you.

p.s. it’s from the call to Rush, which I linked last night.

I heard that call too.

Gee I remember when Democrats said to the Churches sumthin’ about a Big Gubmint healthcare bill for Po’ folks that wouldn’t include abortion or something…

‘This is NOT a Border Crisis.’

Then again, to Liberals, deporting all these illegals and closing the border would be a ‘crisis’ for them.

Rush brought up an interesting point that usually all the FOR THE CHILDREN Hispandering involves copius photos of said children.

Given this administration is run entirely by pathological liars from the top all the way down, what proof do we have these are all “children” or even “minors?” I am sure there are a few, but the media makes it sound like there’s hundreds of thousands of kindergarteners holed up in these military bases when I doubt that is the case.

davidk on July 9, 2014 at 2:05 PM

From the link:

Republican congresswomen appear more “feminine” than their Democrat counterparts, according to a new study by UCLA psychology researchers.

The same goes for Liberal leaning Women compared to Conservative women, it’s just a fact “Female politicians with stereotypically feminine facial features are more likely to be Republican than Democrat, and the correlation increases the more conservative the lawmaker’s voting record,” said study author Colleen M. Carpinella, a UCLA graduate student in psychology, in an article posted to the UCLA Newsroom website.

So what makes a woman “stereotypically feminine?”

Certainly, individuals are easily biased by outside factors not related to facial characteristics, including hair style, application of cosmetics, jewelry or clothing style, said Kerri Johnson, the study’s senior author and an assistant professor of communication studies and psychology at UCLA. For this reason, the researchers used a computer program that was “immune to those influences.”

The program, called FaceGen, allows the researchers to measure more than 100 subtle dimensions including the shape of the jaw, the location of eyebrows, the placement of cheek bones, the shape of eyes and the contour of the forehead, to create a score ranging from -40 (highly male-typed) to +40 (highly female-typed).

For the study, the researchers had FaceGen analyze the portraits of members of the 111th House of Representatives, measuring how closely the facial features of each face approached the average for their gender.

Basically the program used indicated most Liberal women are ugly and Conservative Women pretty. [Bolding added]

Let me guess; you think everyone that disagrees with Obama is a racist, regardless of the nature of that disagreement, right? /rhetorical question mode off

The only attractive liberal woman I can think of is Kirsten Powers. And she pales in comparison to Megyn Kelley.

The DNC should put out a Democrat Swimsuit Calender and put Hildabeast and Chelsea on the cover. I bet it sells about as well as “Hard Choices”.

No one would ever become that way looking at the thing, that’s for sure.
