Israel widens Gaza offensive, readies ground troops

posted at 8:01 am on July 9, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Israel stepped up its offensive in Gaza today, broadening its target range and hitting all along the enclave. The latest increase in activity came after Hamas increased the rate and range of its rocket attacks:

Israel ramped up its offensive on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip on Wednesday, bombing more than 100 targets overnight as Palestinian militants fired rockets deep into Israeli territory, striking far from the seaside enclave and reaching toward major Israeli cities and the country’s coastal high-tech corridor.

Since the Israeli offensive, dubbed Operation Protective Edge, began Tuesday, Israel has attacked more than 400 sites in Gaza, killing at least 24 people and wounding hundreds of others.

Wednesday’s strikes came after Palestinian militants from Gaza fired more than 160 rockets at Israel, including one that reached the northern Israeli city of Hadera, some 70 miles from Gaza, for the first time. There were no reports of injuries from the rocket attacks, with most falling in open fields or intercepted by Israel.

The Israeli military says the Hamas rocket that struck Hadera was an M-302 class rocket, similar to ones found aboard a freighter that the Israelis intercepted in the Red Sea in March. The ship was ferrying a load of Iranian arms to Gaza when it was stopped, the Israelis said. They said Hamas militants have dozens of rockets capable of striking deeper into Israel than ever before.

They are finding less time and room to use them now. In one sign that the Israeli offensive has made its desired impact, the number of Hamas rocket launches has dropped dramatically today:

The army said it attacked more than 160 sites in Gaza early Wednesday, including 118 concealed rocket-launching sites, six Hamas compounds, 10 militant command centers, weapons storage facilities and 10 tunnels used for militant activity and to ferry supplies in from Egypt. Only four rockets were fired from Gaza toward Israel overnight, the army said, a significant decline from the large number that hit Israeli cities the night before, setting off air raid sirens in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and elsewhere.

NBC calls this the heaviest fighting in years, although the Israelis conducted a similar offensive in November 2012:

What exactly is meant by asking whether this will lead to war? This obviously is war, and has been for years. Hamas fires rockets into Israel on a constant basis, and even as late as Monday morning could have avoided a military response by ending the rocket attacks. What we are seeing now is certainly an escalation in the war, but only because Israel got tired of having rockets land on their civilian population areas. Israel is always on a “war footing,” because war is a constant with Hamas.

For a depressing look into that reality, the New York Times reports on the strategy Israel employs in fighting Hamas. They have no way to win a war outright against Gaza, and they know it. The only option they have is “cutting the grass” occasionally to reduce Hamas’ ability to do damage — and that only temporarily:

Until Hamas opts for peace and a permanent two-state solution that recognizes Israel’s right to exist, a state of war will exist between the two. That’s definitional on Hamas’ part, which means Israel has no choice in the matter. Having them become a partner in the Palestinian Authority doesn’t improve matters but extends the war. At some point, Abbas and the West Bank have to decide whether they want their own state more than they want Hamas as a partner, because until Hamas accepts those conditions, the two are mutually exclusive outcomes.

Lots of luck with changing that. The Obama administration has been the most supportive of the Muslims who are killing Jews and, for all of that, even they can’t solve the very basic challenge…..

Two party talks don’t work when one party is committed to driving the other party into the sea.

Summary of 2nd night of #OperationProtectiveEdge http://www.idfblog.com/blog/2014/07/09/hamas-rockets-fired-at-major-israeli-cities/
===============================================================

Overnight summary: Hamas Rockets Fired at Major Israeli Cities
Published on: July 9, 2014
**************************

Yesterday evening, terrorist organizations operating in Gaza launched a salvo of 45 rockets at major Israeli cities, reaching as far as Hadera, located 100 km from Gaza.

The rocket that hit Hadera is an M-302 type rocket, similar to the ones found onboard the Klos-c, a vessel on which was an Iranian shipment of advanced weaponry intended for terrorist organizations operating in the Gaza Strip the IDF intercepted on March 5. Onboard the Klos-C were forty M-302 rockets reaching up-to the range of 160 kilometers.

Overnight, 4 more rockets were fired at Israel; all hit southern Israel.

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, IDF Spokesman: “Last night, the majority of Israel’s population was put under immediate danger as Gaza terrorists fired rockets at major Israeli cities. Despite the turmoil, we will not forget that residents of southern Israel have been suffering from unremitting fire for several years. Since 2014 began, about 500 rockets were fired at Israel. Operation “Protective Edge” will prolong until the fire at Israel ceases, and once we succeed in significantly depleting terrorist infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.”

Overnight, as part of the ongoing operation “Protective Edge”, the IDF targeted approximately 160 terror sites throughout the Gaza Strip.

Among the terror targets the IDF struck are: 118 concealed rocket launching sites, consisting of long-range rockets launchers; weapon storage facilities; 10 tunnels, out of which 7 terror tunnels and 3 smuggling tunnels; 6 Hamas official facilities, and 10 terror command positions.

Since operation “Protective Edge” embarked on July 7, the IDF has targeted approximately 440 targets, with both Naval and Aerial capabilities.

Over the course of the night, a joint IDF-ISA operation led to the successful IAF targeting of Hafez Hamid, 77′, a commander in the Islamic Jihad. Hamid was responsible for the recent rocket attacks against Sderot.

Overnight, terror organizations in the Gaza Strip suffered a severe blow, as the numerous IDF strikes in Gaza managed to significantly impair terrorist capabilities and prevent possible schemes against Israelis. The targets have been selected specifically following long-term intelligence efforts indicating a direct link between them and terrorist infrastructure.

Hamas is not the Palestinian Authority. Hamas was founded on the principle of driving Israel into the sea and killing as many Jews as possible, anywhere in the world. They aren’t a political party, they are an army with a political wing.

For Hamas to agree to any peace which allowed Israel to survive as a Jewish state would be to say their existence means nothing. They are a blood cult.

John Hitchcock on July 9, 2014 at 8:44 AM

There IS a Palestinian state. It’s called Jordan, with 60% or so Palestinian population.

They were welcomed in Jordan when they fled their homes in Israel and the West Bank at the time of Israel’s founding. They did this so the invading Arab armies could kill the Jews without fearing they might accidentally harm an Arab.

The invasion plan was not successful, and Jordan was stuck with all those refugees, which they took in and paid for with limited help from the oil states.

Arafat and his thug followers repaid the hospitality by plotting to assassinate the King. They were rounded up and expelled in 1970, which is what the Black September terrorist wing of the PLO was named for. The rest is history.

Jordan still has the decent Palestinians, but wouldn’t welcome the descendants of the Arafat gang back.

Now imagine knowing that the non-bubble folks you choose to congregate with care very little about your womens-/LBGT-/black-studies knowledge. And, worse, often laugh openly about its perceived value after you prove you haven’t bothered to learn much else.

Sadder still is knowing that he comes here and gets knocked around academically by people who probably only graduated high school but who have genuine intellectual curiousity and have educated themselves on different topics, and this forces him to return to the comfort of that little womens-/LBGT-/black-studies bubble where he knows what he’s expected to say to be told he’s smart again.

They have no way to win a war outright against Gaza, and they know it. The only option they have is “cutting the grass” occasionally to reduce Hamas’ ability to do damage — and that only temporarily:

This is stupidity personified, you honestly have to be a Marxist kool-aid drinking imbecile to believe it. The question is not and never has been is there a strategy that would allow Israel to win. The question is and always has been, does Israel have the courage and stomach to employ that strategy.

The strategy is very simply, it is the oldest strategy in the history of armed conflict. You kill your enemy until either a) there are no more of your enemy left, or b) your enemy complete and totally unconditionally surrenders.

What exactly is meant by asking whether this will lead to war? This obviously is war, and has been for years.

Exactly right. Another favorite which is equally moronic is the phrase that “these developments, it is feared, will jeopardize the mid-east peace process”.

Media = Morons.

Shy Guy on July 9, 2014 at 10:09 AM

If Israel were serious, it would conquer the surrounding areas and carve out safety for itself. It apparently cannot even control extremely small chucks of land on its borders. To be fair, neither can the US.

antisense on July 9, 2014 at 10:10 AM

Push each and every last one of them into the Sinai. The go to the West Bank and push each and every one of them across the River Jordan.

And like that, many of Israel’s problems would be solved…

SC.Charlie on July 9, 2014 at 10:21 AM

When did Hamas acquire M302′s? Those are Syrian weapons. Hezbollah has them, but the last info I saw was that Hamas had not yet. Those are dangerous weapon systems. They have deadly accuracy up to about 200 km and deliver a warhead weighing 175 kg. That’s enough to turn a two-story building into a smoking hole in the ground.

If Hamas now has a cache or a source of 302′s, maybe that’s why Israel decided it was time to cut the grass.

Maybe Shy Guy was right yesterday. While Israel has the capability to sweep the jihadists out to sea, they don’t have the political will or capital to do so.

I read a short while ago an FB entry in Hebrew which asked concrete questions about how Israel’s government and military allowed this rearming and preparation on Hamas’ part.

It is my hope that one day, a commission of inquiry will ask these very same questions and hopefully bring those responsible in the Israeli government and military to shame and even better to judgement where possible.

Shy Guy on July 9, 2014 at 10:33 AM

The only option they have is “cutting the grass” occasionally to reduce Hamas’ ability to do damage — and that only temporarily:

Incorrect. That’s simply the only option they have ever chosen to exercise. The other option is to remove any hint of Islam from their borders, permanently.

If they don’t, then this war will simply never be over, until one side or the other is removed.

I have a question for libfreeordie: Do you get paid to be that stupid or does it just come naturally?

crosshugger on July 9, 2014 at 1:06 PM

Adjoran on July 9, 2014 at 8:44 AM

What is now called “Jordan” was a part of the original Palestinian Mandate. At that time, the term “Palestinian” meant Jews, not Arabs. What is now Israel, Gaza, the Left Bank and Jordan were all part of the Mandate — a homeland for the Jews. And the Brits were in charge of the Palestinian Mandate.

In Saudi Arabia, the ibn Sauds led the Arab revolt against the Turks in WWI. (Lawrence of Arabia.) To reward the Sauds, the Brits turfed out the ruling Hashemite clan and installed the Sauds as rulers of Saudi Arabia. To compensate the Hashemite king, the Brits carved out nearly two thirds of the Palestinian Mandate, called it Palestine-Trans-Jordan (Palestine across the Jordan River) and gave it to the Hashemite king — who promptly declared the entirety of his nation judenrein.

In 1948, at the time of Partition, both Gaza and the West Bank were still part of Israel. The Egyptians managed to steal and keep what is now Gaza. The Jordanians, under the command of Glubb Pasha, a British officer, occupied and kept the West Bank and Jerusalem.

During the 20 years following Partition, the Arabs constantly attacked Israel’s borders and launched several major offensives involving several Arab countries. The Israelis handed the Arabs their butts. In 1967, during the Six Day War, the Israelis were able to retake Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem. They also grabbed the Sinai. In return for a friendship treaty with Egypt, Israel gave Sinai back to Egypt.

Several times, Israel has tried to give Gaza back to Egypt, but Egypt won’t take it because the Palestinians are too troublesome.

Many of the “Palestinians” in Jordan are penned up in refugee camps, forbidden to participate in Jordanian society, and recently many of them who managed to escape life in the camps have been stripped of Jordanian citizenship for fear they would forget that they are really “Palestinians’.

In my opinion, “Palestine” in Arabic means “Squirrel!” For sixty plus years, Arab leaders have been using Israel as the boogey man. Your village doesn’t have potable water? Those evil Jews stole it from you! You and your family live in abject poverty? The Jews stole everything from you! Only when the Jews have been driven into the sea will Muslims have access to education, health care, decent housing and other modern conveniences. As long as the population’s attention is focused on Israel and the Jews, Arab leaders can plunder their countries’ resources.

I honestly believe that Israel should deport every Arab living in Gaza and the West Bank. Give each of them a cash settlement, then wash their hands of them. The big problem is: no Arab country will accept Palestinians as anything other than inhabitants of refugee camps. No where in the Middle East are Palestinians allowed to assimilate. They are penned in refugee camps, kept in poverty and fed a constant diet of Jew-hatred.

Until Hamas opts for peace and a permanent two-state solution that recognizes Israel’s right to exist, a state of war will exist between the two.

Ain’t gonna happen and you know it Ed..Hamas has stated many times they want the destruction of Israel..They hate them…that hatred won’t go away so therefore Hamaas should be wiped off the face of the earth..also the Palestinian authority is no better than them

just say no to a two state solution, Israel

Israel doesn’t need to “cut the grass”. They need to saturate the “grass” with Roundup.

And make me cry a river for the old woman and children that are collateral damage. They actually voted for those POS Hamas bstrds, and the kids are being brainwashed by them.

I hope Israel wipes them off the face of the earth, with shock and awe, and then invites the rest of the Islamofascist mongrels over for the party to get their party favors.

Absolutely right. Hamas murders its opponents, prevents the existence of a free press, has a secret police that hauls away citizens in the night, tortures political prisoners to death, and uses its schools as indoctrination centers.

The UN ceased its operations in Gaza because Hamas was stealing the food and medical supplies and selling them to enrich themselves.

I’m glad you support the Israeli attempt to loosen this oppressive regime’s hold on power.

A Chair of Some Kind on July 9, 2014 at 2:28 PM

All the talk of “Israel should flatten Gaza, cut off all electricity and water, and push the Palestinians into the sea!” ignores political reality.

The Europeans currently hate Jews more than they did prior to World War II. Though Obama is a weak, indecisive president, you can bet that he’d muster the will to retaliate against Israel.

Remember: Our current UN ambassador once advocated an American invasion of Israel to protect the Palestinians. Israel almost literally doesn’t have a friend in the world, excluding El Salvador and India.

If the west pushes Israel too far, what she’d do is turn to China and Russia for trade and protection.

In exchange, the Chinese and Russians will get every single piece of military technology Israel has. Do you really want that?

At some point reality has to intrude. It’s fun to fantasize, but when people base their political decisions on fantasies, that’s when everything starts to fall apart.
