Andrea Mitchell’s crisis of confidence in Obama

posted at 3:21 pm on July 9, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) has become the face of Democratic opposition to President Barack Obama’s lackadaisical approach to the crisis on the southern border. All this week, Cuellar has suggested that the president should, while visiting Texas today and tomorrow, take a break from his fundraising schedule to see the crisis with his own eyes. On Tuesday, he humbly beseeched the president to come to the border. It seems Cuellar has finally lost his patience.

In a display of contempt for the press, his party, and anyone else demanding Obama observe good “optics” by visiting the border, the president allowed himself to be filmed last night enjoying a beer and playing billiards with Colorado’s Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper. This was the final straw for Cuellar.

“He can drink a beer, he can play pool but he can’t go 240 miles to visit the border?” Cuellar remarked in an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell.

“It just really floored me,” he continued. “The appearance means that he’s not paying attention to this humanitarian crisis.”

And MSNBC did not lift a finger to protect the president. While a member of Obama’s party was calling him “aloof” and “detached,” they featured a split screen image of the president dismissively entertaining himself in a bar.

MSNBC optics

How about them “optics?”

Minutes later, Mitchell invited Cecilia Muñoz, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, on her program to defend the president. It was brutal.

“With all due respect, the reality on the ground is that the administration did not stay ahead of this,” Mitchell observed. “The impression – the reality is – that the White House has been slow to react.” She noted that “optics” is a stand-in phrase synonymous with leadership, and implied that Obama had declined to display any.

“Leadership does involve showing the concern,” Mitchell later added after playing a portion of Cuellar’s veritable denunciation of Obama.

“So far, the politics aren’t working and the substance isn’t working,” she concluded. “Somebody’s got to revisit this.”

Muñoz’s responses were canned and unconvincing. She is doing her best to clean up her boss’s mess, even while he is still making it. She did nothing to satisfy a visibly unsettled Mitchell.

This is what a crisis of confidence looks like. This is what an imploding presidency looks like.

Rep. Cuellar, perhaps you’re not familiar with the science of semiotics. No matter. What would be helpful is to realize that the billiard stick in Obama’s hands, well, think of that as an extension of his middle finger. And it’s pointed right at you.

Only to the clueless masses and the MSM is that true.

What I said earlier still applies…

Press coverage…

Republican President: Everything is bad and it’s the result of bad governance.

Democrat President: Everything is really good, just as you’d expect from such an awesome president, but the White House is messing up the “messaging”, or the public is too stupid to understand the awesome “messaging”, or the press is not doing its part to properly explain the awesomeness of the White House “messaging”.

This is always followed by tips from the press on how the White House should change the “optics” and the “messaging” so as to help the press explain to the stupid masses how everything is really good.

Noah Rothman regularly cites MSNBC hosts and liberals in the rare instances when they criticize Obama. What is the point of his trying to legitimize these people? MSNBC only ever criticizes Obama from the left or when they think his actions might be hurting Democrats’ overall. Highlighting their rare criticisms of Obama is not providing a conservative point of view, which is what I thought this site’s purpose was.

Why does Noah rarely quote other conservatives? Why does Noah spend so much time describing in a largely uncritical way what MSNBC hosts are saying? This site is becoming a rebroadcast of MSNBC material.

It was bad enough when ILLEGAL aliens were coming here to take jobs away from adult Americans.

But American children will be bearing the brunt of these ILLEGAL “unaccompanied minors.”

- Classrooms will be overcrowded in the Fall when a “surprisingly” large number of ILLEGAL invaders is added to each classroom.

- Money will be diverted from educating American kids to pay for English lessons for the ILLEGAL invaders.

- If the ILLEGAL minors have contagious diseases, they are most likely to spread them to American children at school.

American Adults need to end this invasion to protect American children.

Send ALL ILLEGAL invaders back home within 72 hours!

You know, when it comes to Cuellar, I’m wondering about something that those who are in the know may have some insight.

I may have missed it, but one guy who’s been silent during the border rush is Rep. Gutierrez. I wonder if he’s been told to STFU because all he’ll do is throw gas on the fire. With Cuellar, could it be that he represents a district along the Texas border, and his constituents are complaining for at least three reasons. First, his Hispanic and other constituents who are citizens may not like getting overrun. Second, his Hispanic constituents may be largely Mexican, and they may not be all that sympathetic to these other Central Americans. Third, whoever his constituents are, they may simply not like having their lives turned upside down by the invaders.

Anyone have any thoughts on Cuellar? He’s not reaming Obama personally, and I don’t expect him to miraculously switch parties. But he’s being awfully persistent even in the face of WH calls.

BuckeyeSam on July 9, 2014 at 4:06 PM

Your questions about Rep. Cuellar (D-TX) are particularly interesting since Rep. Cuellar is one of the very few Representatives who has zero opposition in the November election.

Some more details about Munoz, Obama, and the paybacks between the Admin and La Raza….

Muñoz is the former Vice President for the Office of Research, Advocacy, and Legislation for the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). She was appointed as the Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs in the Obama administration in 2009, and then in 2012, she became the President’s Domestic Policy Advisor and the Director of the Domestic Policy Council.

Prior to Muñoz joining the Obama administration, La Raza received $4.1 million in federal funds. When President Obama brought her aboard in 2009, he issued a special “ethics waiver” since it violated his lobbyist ban. In 2011, it was reported by Judicial Watch that between 2009 and 2010, the funding increased from $4.1 million to $11 million — more than doubling and nearly tripling.

During 2010, La Raza also received $2.5 million in funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for reasons such as housing counseling. The Department of Education doled out $800,000, and the Center for Disease Control gave nearly a quarter of a million.

In other words, LaRaza funding more than doubled since Munoz joined this administration.

None of what is happening at the southern border is by happenstance or coincidence.

It’s part of a long-term deliberate plan.

Athos on July 9, 2014 at 4:39 PM

Anyone else noticed this “Bear” motif the White House is trying to push? They started it a few weeks ago as I recall when Obama said something like “Sometimes the bear just needs to get out of his den” or something. And we keep hearing this stuff. The White House has even taken to using #theBearisLoose hash tag on WH tweets. It seems to me this is more of the legacy-making that Obama and his inner circle are now engaged in, even with two more years to go in his presidency. I think I read somewhere a few days ago (possibly Peggy Noonan) that Obama thinks he’s basically accomplished, or just about accomplished, everything he set out to do: DADT repeal, de facto Amnesty, universal healthcare, climate change, etc. So even though people might not realize what a wonderful and fantastic president he is now, well 5, 10, 20 years from now he’ll be recognized for his greatness, probably by having his visage sculpted into a mountain in South Dakota. Or maybe something with Greek columns on the National Mall. So, he’s basically achieved his greatness, hence his drinking beer, pool playing, and various other fiddling while Rome burns. That’s why he doesn’t give a crap about the optics of not showing up at border. His view is that no one’s going to remember a bunch of tubercular lice-ridden foreign kids a couple decades from now, and if they do they certainly won’t connect them with the guy who caused the seas to stop their rise. So, he’s thinking that with the major part of his legacy in place, he just needs some window dressing and a cool nick name is just the thing for it. He’s probably thinking of Reagan’s “The Gipper,” or “Give’em Hell Harry” Truman, and probably even “Bubba” Clinton. Sure, he’s got “No Drama Obama.” But that makes him sound like a panty-waste who doesn’t do anything–in other words, what he really is. No, he’s needs something tough-sounding to seal this thing up and “Bear” fits the bill perfectly. With a nickname like that, no one’s going to be talking about mom jeans or his wimpy throwing style anymore. Plus it sounds just enough like his given name to be memorable. Yes, it’s bizarre. I mean, any normal man would be viciously ridiculed by his friends if he tried to make up his own nickname, because it’s narcissistic and lame. But I think it’s now become pretty much accepted fact that this guy is easily the most narcissistic president in history. I honestly think this is the kind of petty crap Obama and his cronies obsess over, that is when they’re not planning his next golf outing or vacation so they can once again go out of their way to tell everyone “the Bear is Loose!”

WarEagle01 on July 9, 2014 at 4:41 PM

The left is only concerned about the “optics.” “Gee, this ‘looks‘ bad,” i.e. bad for democrats and bad for the liberal cause.

I don’t think Barry really cares about the optics. He’s enjoying the long-term damage this is doing to America. As Barry would say: “so sue me.”

To be honest I was hoping that Obama would send in fascist jackboots to put down ACTUAL citizens stopping ILLEGALS from coming into their communities. That would have made great optics.

jukin3 on July 9, 2014 at 3:45 PM

Those optics are coming. Without doubt. The SWAT teams are already announced as being en-route, to reinforce the La Raza thugs already there.

Drudge reports that the Secret Service is deploying K-9 units around the White House.
Maybe Mitchell is pissed that she wasn’t selected.

Note the language: “appearance,” “optics,” “impression,” “showing the concern.” He seems “aloof” and “detached.”

They don’t care about what he’s doing or not doing. They’re just worried that it looks bad (and so do they, by extension, since they’re his representatives).

Egads, another unattractive liberal woman. At least you can tell at first glance this one IS female though without worrying about getting it wrong.

That alone puts her in the finals of the beauty pageant.

Noah is coming out of the leftist closet today. He’s out and proud now.

None of what is happening at the southern border is by happenstance or coincidence.

It’s part of a long-term deliberate plan.

“On Monday, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Guatemalan president Otto Perez Molina held a joint press conference in Playas de Catazaja, Mexico, to officially announce an agreement to make it easier for those making the illegal journey to the United States from Central America, to cross into Mexico….

The official announcement only confirms what many of us have known all along…the current chaos on the border which the Obama administration has sympathetically (and dishonestly) characterized as a “humanitarian crisis,” only exists due to collusion between the governments of Mexico, Guatemala and likely the United States.”

In May 48,000

In June 47,000

at least 10,000 illegals without parents in Texas.

In Dallas Co. schools will be used to be processing centers…The Texas-Mexico Border moved up north 500 Miles this week.

Dallas citizens were not consulted about this decision…it was made by a judge.

Takes an average three – ten years for resolution in the courts…if they show up for the hearings.
