Video: Colorado waitresses who carry more than just drinks

posted at 2:41 pm on July 8, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

In Colorado, they take their gun rights seriously — even if their elected representatives forget to do so. In a segment this morning, CBS News featured the waitresses of Shooters, a popular restaurant in Rifle, Colorado, who carry food, drinks, and firearms on the job. The owner began carrying her pistol openly and the staff followed her lead — and now the restaurant has embraced the concept, even offering training for concealed-carry permits that has a free burger and fries to go along with the class:

The town is called Rifle. The grill is called Shooters. So it’s no surprise that the waitresses have an unusual dress code, CBS News correspondent Barry Petersen reports.

“I am carrying a Ruger 357 Blackhawk,” said Ashlee Saenz, a waitress at Shooters. “I like the old style revolvers, and I just like big guns.”

When owner Lauren Boebert started carrying a gun openly, which is legal in most parts of Colorado, the waitresses accessorized as well. …

“Maybe if someone wandered in from New York City, from Washington D.C., they might be a little worried, said Doug Yajko, an area doctor. “But the local people, plus the people in western Colorado, are not going to be worried by someone with a handgun.”

Funny you should mention that, Doc. Rolling Stone has a featured interview with Michael Bloomberg out today, who helped push some of the gun-control legislation that Governor John Hickenlooper signed and then regretted. Bloomberg dismisses the efforts of the NRA’s recalls in Colorado, sniffing that they targeted communities with no roads, or something:

Has running Mayors Against Illegal Gunsfor the last eight years made you more or less optimistic about this issue?
Well, there are 16 states that already have [background checks], and they’re populated states. So there’s a big chunk of the country that’s already protected by these laws. And, yeah, you’re not going to get everybody until you get to a tipping point, but the fact that you save a lot of lives is not something to sneer at. And the fact that you can’t save every life is not an argument not to try to save any lives.

In Colorado, we got a law passed. The NRA went after two or three state Senators in a part of Colorado where I don’t think there’s roads. It’s as far rural as you can get. And, yes, they lost recall elections. I’m sorry for that. We tried to help ‘em. But the bottom line is, the law is on the books, and being enforced. You can get depressed about the progress, but on the other hand, you’re saving a lot of lives.

Colorado Springs has no roads? I wonder if Bloomberg knows that they have indoor plumbing, too. (I’ve been there and can confirm this personally, in case anyone wonders.) Nothing says we relate to you like a mayor of New York City assuming that the locals haven’t yet heard about asphalt yet. That’ll surely help Hickenlooper, who was recently forced to admit that he consulted with Bloomberg on gun control after denying it in a meeting with law enforcement. Sharks gotta swim, bats gotta fly, and elitists gotta impose nanny states, y’know.

Handguns are the great leveler between 90 lb women and 250 lb men. Why do gun control activists hate women?

JeremiahJohnson on July 8, 2014 at 2:47 PM

Back in the 90′s I was doing some work in Aspen and had to travel through Rifle. It was so bright I had to pull into a drug store to get some sunglasses. When I walked in there was a small counter for drug store stuff and the rest of the store walls were lined with RIFLES and counters in front loaded with handguns. After seeing the waitress’s, it’s my kinda town.

I don’t know about “resort town”, but we do have some of the most popular tourist attractions in the state – Pikes Peak and the Air Force Academy.
And I would say more conservative than libertarian, but defintely to the right.

Also one of the most military oriented cities in the US with 5 military bases – Fort Carson, Cheyenne Mountain AFS (what many incorrectly call NORAD), Peterson AFB (home to the Heaquarters of NORAD, US Northern Command, Air Force Space Command, and Army Space and Missile Defense Command), Schriever AFB (HQ 50th Space Wing and the center of all military satellite control, and Missile Defense Agency Integration and Operations Center), and the afore mentioned Air Force Academy.

And as you get closer, you suddenly realize how darn big the Rockies are.

Would be cool if instead of a menu they could just hand you a gun when you walked in.
Then, rather than order, you just shoot one of the chickens that they have roaming around indoors.
At that point one of the buxom waitresses comes over to your table, leans over and plucks that chicken…slowly.
When it’s finally ready to be cooked, a bikini clad, flame-thrower packing ‘chef’ appears to roast the thing.

Ya, you do – since you’re clearly one of those east coast Dem elitests who actually believe we don’t have paved roads, gotta fight Injuns to get to Walmart, shootouts on main street every day, and have chickens running loose everywhere.
I know you don’t care for actual facts, but fewer people get shot in all of Colorado in a year than are shot in Chicago in a month.

But I’m sure getting out and seeing what the real world is like would burst your little inner city utopian bubble.

The great thing about private business. I don’t have to go. But don’t come crying…

But, Hobby Lobby…what a shallow thinker you are.

Schadenfreude on July 8, 2014 at 4:59 PM

Glad HA finally got around to this…it’s already 3 weeks old.

FlaVet on July 8, 2014 at 4:38 PM

Ya – and the restaurant has been there, and operating the same way for much much longer.

dentarthurdent on July 8, 2014 at 4:59 PM

None of the recall places have near as many bedbugs as NYC does. Perhaps we should start talking about gun control nuts coming from cities that can’t control pest infestations like bedbugs.

yetanotherjohn on July 8, 2014 at 5:04 PM

hahaha oh, Rifle. Been a long, long time.

(BTW, Bloomberg, Rifle does have roads — I can attest from first-hand experience.)

I’m a western slope guy. I bet Shooters makes a lot of money and doesn’t get held up.

And I’m stopping in for food and drink on my next trip that direction. With my .38 as moral support for the gals.

Ahhhh, come on, you gotta admit he seemed to have almost a sense of humor on this thread. I thought the pr0n comment was funny. :)

We’ll definitely stop in if we ever get out that far, and wife and I will both be carrying – long drive from Colorado Springs though…..

dentarthurdent on July 8, 2014 at 5:15 PM

But the bottom line is, the law is on the books, and being enforced.

Typical elitist. Believes his own BS! NEWSFLASH! Fat Mike: The County Sheriffs in Colorado have REFUSED to enforce those new laws of yours.

I’m all for guns in the right hands, have shot since I was 14 and carry, instructed women in basic and not so basic handgun handling and marksmanship for 12 years until I started losing my hearing from shooting so much (even with good muffs). Women who shoot are hawt.

That being said, it’s bad form and not smart to place your hand on a holstered gun in a ‘ready to draw’ manner unless you are indeed ready to draw. People can and have misinterpreted such a posture in the past.

Just never gets old.

dentarthurdent on July 8, 2014 at 4:08 PM

It was certainly old by the time my first four years were up. But, waking up the first morning I walked out the door of my own place in town, my perspective reset. :)

GWB on July 8, 2014 at 4:35 PM

Don’t you guys get increased frequency of Post-USAFA Dream Syndrome living so close to the place? I live in Florida, about the furthest geologic opposite of Colorado Springs as you can get, and still at least once a week I’m dreaming that the AF sends me back to take a GR they forgot to give me before graduation.

James on July 8, 2014 at 6:46 PM

I happen to drive down to Colorado Springs last week and I was on a 6 lane interstate. Even the side streets were paved!

My kind of restaurant, mostly sheepdogs…..very little sheep.

The best part about Shooters – you are guaranteed to not be seated next to a flaming Liberal.

libfreeordie on July 8, 2014 at 3:04 PM

Hey there, Mensa, perfect timing of you to say that. Just above your foolishness is a comment quoting Shooter’s Grill announcing that they have to close early because they’ve run out of food, and have rush-ordered a new shipment to handle the increased traffic.

Pretty much just like Chik-Fil-A when your folks ordered a boycott. Backfired like a ’64 Riviera on unleaded.

Funny how, in the midst of a pedantic and failed attempt to look down your elitist nose at a topic on which you have nothing but fail, you manage to make a strongly conservative point, about freedom to choose. Something Bloomberg is never happy with. The great thing about a private business with ethics, they don’t have to depend on the patronage of liberal snobs, the majority of regular folks will keep ‘em working just fine.
