MSNBC hosts think Rick Perry’s decision to snub Obama is… justified?

posted at 9:21 am on July 8, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Texas Gov. Rick Perry will not meet President Barack Obama on the tarmac when he touches down in Texas on Wednesday to attend a variety of Democratic fundraising events. Instead of a handshake and a photo op, Perry said that he wants to meet privately with the president to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis at the border.

In a letter addressed to the president, Perry outlined his reasoning:

“I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas,” Mr. Perry wrote in a letter to the president Monday. “I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue.”

On Tuesday, the hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe weighed in on Perry’s refusal to meet the president and, rather than criticizing him for a display of political self-interest and a failure to observe decorum, suggested that he was actually justified in seeking a more substantive meeting with Obama.

“I actually don’t have a complete problem with his statement,” co-host Mika Brzezinski said of Perry’s request.

“It’s the president that just wants the photo op, he just wants the quick and easy handshake, when he has Democrats in his own party saying, ‘There is, in fact, a humanitarian crisis on the border’ and talking about Katrina moments,” host Joe Scarborough said.

“It looks like Rick Perry does have the upper hand when he’s saying basically the same thing Democratic congressmen from the same state [are] saying,” he continued, noting that the “optics” of failing to go to the border is politically perilous for Obama.

Time’s Mark Halperin agreed with both hosts. “I think his schedule will change some way,” he predicted. “Bet on that.”

“Katrina was a shared responsibility on the federal government – state and local government. This is really a federal issue,” he continued. “it’s a humanitarian crisis involving kids, and I think governance matters.”

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and USA Today reporter Susan Page have observed that Obama runs the risk of encountering his “Katrina moment” in Texas. As Dave Weigel noted in Slate, hyperbolic members of the press declared Obama that has met his “Katrina moment” in at least eight other crises over the course of his presidency, and each time the president emerges from that crisis politically scarred but still standing.

Why this crisis may have the effect on Obama’s image that Bush’s approach to Hurricane Katrina did is not, as Halperin suggested, a jurisdictional one – whether state, federal, or local authorities abdicated their responsibilities the most. Nor is it, as the many profiled in Weigel’s piece seemed to think, merely a suboptimal response to a crisis. It was Bush’s apparently flippant and casual response to the crisis culminating in two atonal moments which turned a majority of voters off to the president for the rest of his term; the photograph of him flying over the devastation in New Orleans and the infamous moment when he praised FEMA director Michael Brown’s performance in the midst of that crisis.

Obama won’t repeat Bush’s optical mistakes. He is likely to amend his schedule so that he can take in the scene at the border himself where the cameras will find him engaged and making few statements. The president’s approach to this crisis thus far, however, has been aloof, distant, and callous. In that sense, this present crisis does have the potential to have the same effect on Obama’s favorability and job approval ratings as Hurricane Katrina had on Bush.

Obama can still reverse that course and present himself as a leader managing a humanitarian disaster, but he hasn’t done that yet.

I’m of a mind that when the tar and feathering begins, the media should be first. Let the politicians quiver in their footies for a bit while they watch, knowing they are next.

Midas on July 8, 2014 at 10:15 AM

I disagree. Tar and feather the politicians first, make the media quiver as they report it.

There is no Constitutional prohibition against media corruption. Political corruption on the other hand is VERY illegal.

katy the mean old lady on July 8, 2014 at 10:48 AM

Obama has known for nearly 8 months (minimum) this ‘invasion’ of illegals was coming…

Perry has all but begged for a visit from Obama to see the humanitarian crisis he (obama) has created and has not even gotten a response…

Obama has broken laws, ordered laws to be ignored, created new ‘Rights’ for Illegals that Americans do not even have, and is now engaged in illegal human trafficking by having agency personnel escort illegals into the country who are being smuggled by ‘Coyotes’ and Drug Cartels (who Obama illegally armed with thousands of weapons.

Obama has created a Humanitarian Crisis by overwhelming local and state agencies by refusing to stop the massive tidal wave of illegals coming in and by NOT providing any funding or assistance.

Obama / Progressives have declared we need Amnesty to bring illegals out of the shadows, but they are making no effort to register any of these illegals coming into the country. Instead they are trying to quickly dump / scatter them throughout the United States before pressure / Courts force them to do their job / deport them.

Without notifying Mayors / Governors, Obama is having busses take illegals to towns across the Unites States to dump un-documented, diseased, troubled illegals into their populations, attempting to place the cost of Obama’s criminal agenda on the local populace.

Obama is now turning US Military Bases into DAY CARE for thousands of illegals.

Obama declared ‘our future depends on the success of these DREAMERS’, not on the success of our own children / citizens, and just declared he is willing to use every ounce of Presidential authority to ensure millions of these illegals flooding in are NOT deported!

Obama has turned the office of the Presidency into his own Tyranical, Criminal, Dictatorship and is in the process of fullfilling his daddy’s dream of deteriorating the US into a 3rd world power rather than being a ‘super power’ that we have been and which Obama’s daddy & Obama detest.

easyt65 on July 8, 2014 at 10:48 AM

During Katrina, the media had cameras all over, showing the worst that was happening.

However, Obama has barred all cameras from showing the children suffering is sweltering, disease infested internment camps. Also, the media is in no big hurry to try and get any pictures.

The Media is covering Obama’s a$$ again.

Perry has written letter after letter, made phone call after phone call, requesting to have a meeting with Obama regarding this serious issue threatening our national security. Obama, thus far, had refused to respond to any of the attempts by Perry to contact him. Obama did have his administration staff offer to have Obama meet briefly at the bottom of the steps of Air Force One and to talk while he walked to his Limo to leave for a fund-raiser.

Our Southwestern Border is reportedly completely open, Border Patrol agents have been ordered to escort illegals into the country if caught shy of crossing our border (‘US engaged in human trafficking’), illegals reportedly bringing in many diseases, gangs and criminals reportedly coming in, ‘mules’ mixed in with illegals, local / state agencies overwhelmed. illegal children drinking water from the toilets, ‘Humanitarian Crisis’, ‘US DUMPING / Bussing illegals out to US towns’, ‘Citizens blocking busses bringing in Illegals’, Feds bringing in Armed Riot Control / Marshalls to Prevent Citizens from Stopping ‘Illegal’ Busses…

…AND THE PRESIDENT, RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF THIS, CAN’T SPARE 5 MINUTES WITH TEX GOV PERRY TO DISCUSS THE PROBLEM BECAUSE FUND RAISING IS MORE IMPORTANT?!

…and you try to claim OBAMA is the one acting like a ‘grown-up’? Perry is the only one of the 2 concerned about our national security, disease/criminals coming into the US, the Humanitarian crisis, the out-of-pocket state expense Obama has dumped on Texas by causing this problem without funding his agenda, & the Humanitarian crisis Obama has caused / is causing! ONCE AGAIN, Obama has decided to take on the role he is more comfortable with that being President — COMMUNITY ORGANIZER!

Obama has REFUSED TO ENFORCE US Immigration Law…

Obama has CREATED Illegal-Alien-Only ‘Rights’ by directing the Justice Department NOT to arrest, detain, charge, convict, jail, or deport any illegal for committing any crime less than a felony..

Obama has stopped deporting illegals…

Obama released thousands of convicted violent felons / criminal illegals into the US population rather than deport them…

Obama has the federal government engaging in HUMAN TRAFFICKING by ordering US agencies to escort illegals caught short of our border into the US…

Obama is attempting to quickly dump / disperse illegals throughout the country before pressure / courts force them to do their jobs and deport them…

Obama is calling for armed marshalls / ‘troops’ to be deployed to go against protestors blocking busses to prevent Obama from dumping hundreds of illegals into their communities… (sorta like the cops escorting criminals into your house..)

BASED ON ALL OF THIS, CONGRESS SHOULD DENY ANY FEDERAL FUNDS REQUEST BUT INSTEAD AUTHORIZE FEDERAL PAYMENTS TO TEXAS, ARIZONA, & OTHER STATES HAVING TO PAY FOR WHAT IS GOING ON.

IF CONGRESS APPROVES ANY FUNDING FOR THE ILLEGALS ‘INVASION’ GOING ON THERE SHOULD BE A HARD STIPULATION THAT THE BULK OF THE FUNDING GO TO IMMEDIATE DEPORTATION (TRANSPORTATION OUT OF THE COUNTRY – DUMPING THEM INTO MEXICO IF NEED BE) WITH MINIMUM FUNDING FOR FOOD/WATER, ETC – FOCUS SHOULD BE ON GETTING THEM OUT. ANOTHER STIPULATION SHOULD BE IF THE MONEY IS USED ANY OTHER WAY THOSE RESPONSIBLE WILL FACE IMMEDIATE JAIL TIME!

FURTHERMORE, CONGRESS SHOULD PASS LEGISLATION CALLING FOR THE FIRING / JAILING OF ANY BORDER PATROL / OTHER AGENCY PERSONNEL VIOLATING US IMMIGRATION LAW / REFUSING TO ENFORCE IT.

This is where states should give the Federal Government the big ‘F* YOU’ and do whatever it takes to neforce its own sovereignty and security! In the military it is unlawful / not necessary to follow an UN-LAWFULL order…which is exactly what the DOJ ordering the states NOT to uphold the law / rotect themselves is! Perry should call out the National Guard to man the border, to deal with the Border Patrol and any other Federal Agency if they try to stop them from securing the border, and send the bill to the Federal Government. If Obama refuses to pay up or attempts to take action against the states, those states should RECALL their Federal Representatives from Washington!

You mean how he stopped the deportation process of those who meet certain DREAM Act criteria pack in June of 2012?

How about that actual deportation numbers are down 40% from the last year Bush was in office.

How about this quote from obama’s ICE Director..

“If you are a run-of-the-mill immigrant here illegally, your odds of getting deported are close to zero — it’s just highly unlikely to happen,” John Sandweg, until recently the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in an interview.

And oops

The number of immigrant youths under the age of 18 who are deported or turned away from entering the U.S. each year has dropped significantly while President Obama has been in office, new data from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency reveals.

In 2008, under the George W. Bush Administration, the number was 8,143, but last year, the figure fell to 1,669, according to ICE data released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by the Los Angeles Times.

Now I wonder why all those youths were under the impression that it was game on to enter the USA illegally.

But let’s discuss Perry’s “conspiracy theory”.

Is obama inept or does he have ulterior motives?

Those are really the only two choices.

From what I heard at the time she wouldn’t ask even though Bush kept calling and asking if she wanted it. And we know how the useless Democrats in charge down there were.

The Left has no more potent image-weapon in its arsenal than the plight of the chi’dren: legions of little off-color babies with flies buzzing around their nostrils and crusty eye-sockets, precious little cocoa-colored angels sitting in the dirt and debris, staring piteously up into the slo-mo video cameras, divine human souls savaged and ignored by heartless Republican troglodytes too caught up in political ambitions (read “money”) to give a rat’s a** whether they live or die.

And now Obama wants to pretend they aren’t there. Bad optics, bad mojo…

This nor any other crisis will ever become Obama’s Katrina moment thanks to a media that grovel at his feet. Can you imagine this under a Romney administration? Images of these poor children plastered on nightly newscasts for days on end. It would be a front page story for at least a month on our newspapers of record. This is precisely what happened with Katrina. Images of fools, who had ignored warnings to leave by the way, on rooftops yelling for help were all over the news. And flying over NO may have been flippant, but what’s even more flippant is a President going to a fund raiser in the same state the crisis is occurring with no intentions of going to see the crisis. And Bush didn’t even cause Katrina! On the other hand, this border crisis was created by Obama’s immigration pandering, and the media continues to deny it. Oh wait, what am I talking about. Bush had the military create Katrina so he could wipe out the entire Black population in NO in order to pave the way for Jindal and keep Louisiana in the GOP column. Or no, his anti-climate change policies led to Hurricane Katrina, and his flippant response was because he hates black people and wanted to see as many dead as possible. Either way, to paraphrase the wise Kanye West, George Bush hates black people.

Perry should go have a grown up conversation with the Prez.
Enough with the silly antics.
