Obama’s media allies getting nervous over his casual approach to border crisis

posted at 12:41 pm on July 7, 2014 by Noah Rothman

President Barack Obama will head to Texas later this week for Democratic fundraising events in Austin and Dallas, but he will not visit the southern border where unaccompanied minors are streaming across that frontier in record numbers.

“Schedules sometimes change and if they do we’ll let you know, but right now there is no plan to visit the border while he’s in Texas,” said White House Press Sec. Josh Earnest last week, bristling over the impertinence of the suggestion that Obama should take time out of his fundraising schedule to see the scale of this emerging refugee crisis for himself.

“The reason that some people are suggesting the president should go to [the] border when he’s in Texas is because they’d rather play politics than actually trying to address some of these challenges,” Earnest added.

Not so, according to one House Democrat who savaged the administration over its lackadaisical manner of dealing with the recent influx of migrant women and children. “With all due respect to the administration, they’re one step behind,” said Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX). “They should have seen this coming a long time ago.”

The media, too, is becoming less amendable to the president’s causal approach to the crisis on the border while voices criticizing the White House’s stance on this issue proliferate. As Gabriel Malor observed, both CBS and NBC’s evening newscasts noted Obama’s refusal to amend his schedule in order to take a tour of the Texas border.

NBC News laid out the political crisis the president faces in perhaps the starkest terms. “President Obama can’t afford the perception that his policies have encouraged an uncontrolled flow of young people across the border,” NBC reporter John Harwood said. “He’s got to do something to stem that tide.”

“There are increasing calls for the president to visit the border,” NBC’s White House Correspondent Kristen Welker added. “There is a lot of speculation that he will have to directly address the crisis in some way while he’s down there, especially given all the political pressure that he’s under.”

MSNBC was no kinder to the president, as evidenced by the ominous use of the word “optics” to describe the president’s decision to ignore the border. “What do you think the optics are going to be on the backend of the president’s trip,” MSNBC host Thomas Roberts asked Random House Executive Vice President Jon Meacham on Monday.

“I think the president should probably address it more forthrightly,” Meacham said after conceding that the politics of the border crisis are “becoming uglier.”

Chuck Todd’s panel of Beltway reporters expressed shock over the White House’s insistence that the president would not visit the border this week. USA Today reporter Susan Page described Obama’s conundrum as a potential “Katrina moment” for Obama.

“This is unacceptable to more than Republicans on immigration, the situation we have there,” she said on Monday. “And boy, is that going to anger some of his core constituents who have wanted him to do more on immigration, not less.”

The New York Times examined the options available to Obama to deal with this crisis and determined that few of them are good. “The administration can look too nice or too mean, and finding the middle ground is going to be very, very difficult,” National Immigration Forum Executive Director Ali Noorani told The Times.

“He doesn’t want to go and sort of stand there with his hands on his hips saying, ‘Don’t come in,’” Immigration WorksUSA President Tamar Jacoby added.

The Times concluded by noting that Obama is in a perilous political position, an observation shared by Associated Press reporters.

“The White House also wants to keep the focus of the debate in this midterm election year on Republican lawmakers whom the president has accused of blocking progress on a comprehensive overhaul of America’s immigration laws,” the AP reported last week. “Obama announced this week that, due to a lack of progress on Capitol Hill, he was moving forward to seek out ways to adjust U.S. immigration policy without congressional approval.”

These otherwise sympathetic voices raising concerns about Obama’s method of dealing with the border crisis, both substantively and superficially, are more likely to get him to reverse course in a contested midterm election year than admonitions from figures like Rick Perry.

“The border crisis has put him in the difficult position of asking Congress for more money and authority to send the children back home at the same time he’s seeking ways to allow millions of other people already in the U.S. illegally to stay,” the AP report continued. Obama will seek an additional $2 billion to speed up processing and deportation of illegal border crossers.

That request may reinforce a sticky narrative on the right that the president is prone to throwing money at problems without a full understanding of their scope if Obama does not amend his schedule in order to fit in a visit to the border.

The People have made themselves perfectly clear. No Amnesty Period.

Not since Obamacare has Obama stood so steadfastly AGAINST the will of the People.

An open border and hundreds of thousands of illegals are NOT going to be tolerated by the People with 20% real unemployment in this country. No one believes the phony numbers anymore Barry.

The mainstream media can spin away all it wants but it can’t hide the sun.

Obama’s media allies getting nervous over his casual approach to border crisis

This whole “they will do the work Americans don’t want to do” meme is wearing really, really thin. It’s obvious that most are coming here for the welfare that will put Joe Taxpayer even deeper on the hook for the interest on the ever-accumulating debt. And he doesn’t like it.

BTW, in case anyone had wondered about Obama’s deportation numbers:

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson acknowledged Tuesday that his department’s deportation numbers are now mostly made up of illegal immigrants caught at the border, not just those from the interior, which means they can’t be compared one-to-one with deportations under President Bush or other prior administrations…

“Under the Obama administration, more than half of those removals that were attributed to ICE are actually a result of Border Patrol arrests that wouldn’t have been counted in prior administrations,” said Rep. John Culberson, Texas Republican.

“Correct,” Mr. Johnson confirmed.

The media sees what’s left of their thin credibility slipping away. Mostly because as this continues to occur, the potential for American’s to elect another Democrat is rapidly falling.

They’ve ignored every lie, obfuscation, violation and subjugation this administration has undertaken. Yet now they are slightly indignant?

The Feds have dispatched the elite 3AM Commandos from Obama’s Civilian Defense “Corpse” to Murrieta to make sure THE NEXT ILLEGAL BUS gets through.

They will either be forced to back down, or we may have the Battle of Lexington and Concord.

From stories I was reading this morning, the Feds are pissed that they can’t use the DHS facility in Murrieta and are determined to force the issue.

We may be about to witness a massacre that starts the 2nd Revolution. Because as history has shown, bloodshed is not a genie easily put back in the bottle.

There is no political upside to this for Obama. He’s either going to enrage the citizens under attack and getting sick at the hands of the parasites he has invited into this nation and refused to deport. Conversely, he can’t be the mean adult who calls for border security and keep the racist groups like La Raza happy. So….. he’ll fundraise without ever acknowledging there even is a border crisis.

If by some reason he’s compelled to go to the border. Look for a speech with a bunch of filthy disease-ridden parasites used as props behind him as he lectures the nation on why these uneducated unhealthy illegals should be allowed to stay.

The reason why the Founders thought the press so important that it’s the only PROFESSION that has protections specifically written for it in the Constitution was they thought a free press VITAL to keep government honest.

They never conceived of a government subverted and controlled press that is so deep in the pocket of government that it functions to PROTECT it.

This cannot be overstated, California is a lot more conservative than the Media paints it. There is a narrow strip on the coast, some 25 miles wide east to west wise, known as the I-5 corridor, it runs from Orange County up to San Fransicko, it is where 52.5 percent of California’s population lives, that is the Democrat/Liberal stronghold in California.

Get outside of that corridor and California is surprisingly conservative. Murrieta is outside that Democrat/Liberal corridor very much part of Conservative California.

Oh, and as a side note, were it not for the 5 to 7 million illegal aliens in the I-5 corridor, the Democrat/Liberal Progressives would not have a majority in California.

oscarwilde on July 7, 2014 at 12:59 PM

Obama’s border plan is not to help the Dems today. It’s about 3 elections from now. He’s playing long ball. He’s planting the seeds of future dem victories. He wants to see Texas blue. When that happens, the dems will never lose another election.

portlandon on July 7, 2014 at 1:00 PM

Obama created this crisis by encouraging these youths to cross the border because he promised that those that were already here would not be deported, that he would not enforce the law. Obama thought that this crisis could be used to cajole and brow-beat Republicans into passing amnesty in the house. Now that it’s backfiring, he can’t go down there because it puts his face on the crisis and he’ll be forced to do something when he’d prefer to lay this squarely in the lap of Republicans. It’s total fail, just like the VA mess.

Optics? Here’s something for the optic nerves.

The White House is asking local lawmakers to help find facilities to house thousands of illegal immigrant kids.

The initial request comes from FEMA and was sent out by the White House Office Of Intergovernmental Affairs.

The internal email was acquired by KFI News and shows a request for emergency shelter options in states and communities throughout the US. It then lists a special email to send any suggestions.

An attachment outlines specific requirements for shelters- facilities must be within 50 miles of a major city and airport, able to be fenced in and available for lease.

TB is a huge danger to all Americans.

Tuberculosis vaccine is rarely used in the U.S. – it’s usually only for children/adults (the vaccine is not very effective) who have constant contact with someone who has active TB. Most people in the U.S. have never been vaccinated – most are susceptible.

I recall something way back in the run-up to Amnesty being pushed by McVain/Gramnesty of a confirmed case of TB that the Bush admin ICE let go in Cali. The article also mentioned other cases of rarely seen diseases, but that TB case stuck out because the illegal was hospitalized then let go by ICE, instead of bused back.

Speaking of TB. yes we can definitely blame Bush.

AH_C on July 7, 2014 at 1:38 PM

If you wanna get really nitpicky about it, we really haven’t bothered enforcing our immigration laws since 1967. So yeah, there’s that too.

The left went absolutely apocalyptic when President Bush failed to drop everything and go into the belly of the beast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

But since Barky is well aware of the situation on the border, the libiots are going to give him his usual pass, it would seem. Can’t get in the way of those fund raisers or tee times, now, can we?

O.M.G. Get over the blame Bush thing on this one, puhleeze!

A lot at stake here. It isn’t a joking matter. We don’t know how many of these cases exist. DHHS isn’t addressing them properly. They’re getting shipped off to who knows where across the country.

Meh, no problem…..time is of the essence and the locals can deal with costs, human and economic, of illnesses and diseases Obumbles admin gladly spreads throughout the fruited plains.

hawkeye54 on July 7, 2014 at 1:58 PM

The likelihood of these TB infected illegals being effectively quarantined is 0. All they will have to do is (unenforceable)agree to follow up care. It’s a joke.

Sally Kohn’s CNN Op-Ed Declares Calling Illegal Immigrants “Illegal” Is The New “N-Word”…

No, Sally, what’s offencive is pretending that breaking the law, bringing in diseases, and placing an enormous burden on already massively indebted governments – from the Federal level down to the smallest village – while ennobling the ‘poor, oppressed’ person, who enters the country illegally, and attempting to shame and smear all of those concerned about a really serious issue. Further, I, personally, and many people just like me, who came to these shores legally, played by the rules, and spent lots of money, time, and effort to become citizens, are appalled. You and your fellow ‘Open Borders, Open Arms’ champions are, basically, calling us ‘suckers.’

Ms Kohn, back in the 1990s and through Gordon Brown’s disastrous run-in with Gillian Duffy, a life-long Labour voter and pensioner, the Left – and, in fairness, many of the Tory muffins – called anyone, who raised any sort of objection, concern, or question about the enormous influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe, ‘bigots’, ‘racists’ (Who knew that Bulgarian and Romanian were races?). Nowadays, with the absolutely staggering burden on public services (You know that so-called ‘free’ healthcare provided by the NHS? Well, its probably going to start charging some patients in addition to expanding its already long list of treatments and drugs that are simply unavailable – and, quite often, are labelled ‘elective’ even though they are routine in the US) and the fraying of the cultural fabric that holds society together, even the staunchest, most radical Labourites no longer deny that there isn’t a serious problem and people are quite right to be concerned.

The population of the UK is around 61 million, but because of the EU, it is going to beginning opening the doors (even wider) next year to the poor Bulgarians and Romanians (**does anyone have a hankie that I can borrow?**). Forget about the cost and cultural issues for Britain. Think about what that means to their own countries. What kind of future will they have if 21 million (projected) of their ‘best and brightest’ depart for other shores???

I understand that you live in Brooklyn. When you and your family retire for the night, do lock your door or leave it unlocked and wide open? Don’t you, wisely and appropriately, have a right to decide who is permitted into your home? Don’t you take appropriate steps to protect your child from possible dangers? Why is it perfectly acceptable for you to be secure in your home, but unacceptable for us to demand that the nation’s security and sovereignty be protected and respected?

Further, I completely understand what your heart is saying, but your head needs to do some math and comprehend the reality of the situation. Yes, we’d all love to have every man, woman, and child on the planet happy, healthy, wealthy, and wise, but only Utopians believe that is remotely possible. Encouraging unaccompanied children to make the arduous trek to America under the ‘supervision’ of coyotes and drug dealers is not only irresponsible, but is also incredibly inhumane. According to several sources, around one-third of the females (and, I am a sure a number of the males) are RAPED on the way.

Obama has said that these kids are the ‘best and the brightest’ and ‘America’s future.’ If so, why does he hate the countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador sooooo much? Is he a mean-mean-meanie Colonialist and imperialist or something? I mean, if these kids are going to change the world, why would you want to deprive their home countries cesspools of their brilliance?

In the past, I have heard you, as well as many others on the Left, basically, tell pro-lifers that, if they aren’t going to adopt unwanted children, then they should ‘Just STFU, already!’

Fine. Reciprocity is fair play.

How about you and your friends, starting with Nancy Pelosi, who is worth around $26 million and said that she ‘wish[ed] that she could take these children home with her’ after visiting an UAC shelter in Texas, start adopting and footing the entire bill for these kids, who, I am constantly being told, are ‘American’s future’? Instead of Sheila Jackson-Lee handing out lollipops, how about she takes several kids into her home? C’mon, Sally, you and your partner can set the example for everyone by, graciously and personally, taking complete responsibility for a few of these children.

Otherwise, ‘JUST STFU, ALREADY!’ and send them home…to their parents.

President Barack Obama will head to Texas later this week for Democratic fundraising events in Austin and Dallas, but he will not visit the southern border where unaccompanied minors are streaming across that frontier in record numbers.

Priorities.

As for ‘the crisis’, it’s only a problem if you acknowledge it. If you IGNORE it, it isn’t a “problem”.

Besides, things are working out at the border just fine for King Barack.

hawkeye54 on July 7, 2014 at 2:15 PM

This is sadly inevitable.

There is a nonviolent means to fix our problem though, an Article V state convention to offer amendments. We are down to two means left to restore the Republic, Article V or Amendment II.

Of course, even a revolution doesn’t HAVE to be violent. The government has the option of throwing down it’s weapons and surrendering the criminals who have subverted this Republic to face trial by jury.

They will have that choice.

Media handwringing about the difficult position Obama is in regarding immigration. Bullsh!t. Same story they used for Russia invading Crimea, ISIS in Iraq, Libya, etc. Every one of these situations are the results of Obama’s incredibly bad policies. Jeez, the MSM act like he’s a victim in all this…

You can’t help but note the irony here. On one hand, they tell us there’s nothing wrong with being gay or a transvestite, then on the other hand, they get all bent out of shape over the Obama’s being called gay and transvestite, lol. What’s the big deal if there’s nothing wrong with those two things, libs?
