Depressing poll reveals Americans think nation’s best days are behind it

posted at 9:21 am on July 7, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Those conducting an annual poll for The Atlantic/Aspen Institute were undoubtedly depressed when they asked Americans what they thought the world would look like in 2024. To say that Americans are pessimistic about the future would be an understatement.

Americans are more divided by race and class, expect the county to continue to decline, and believe Russia and China will present a greater threat. The Survey found that 49 percent of respondents believed the country was “more unified” in 2004 than it is today. Atlantic suggested that respondents were viewing the events of “fractious 2004 with rose-colored glasses,” but a recent Pew Research Center study also found that political polarization has increased dramatically in recent years.

2004

50 percent of respondents say it will be difficult to afford a college education in 2024. 64 percent say the ease of finding jobs for their children will grow more difficult, though 60 percent also say that their kids’ lives will be better than theirs were. A plurality, 44 percent, believe Spanish will overtake English as the most widely spoken language in the U.S. in 10 years.

66 percent believe the gap between rich and poor will expand in the next decade and two-thirds say that money will become even “more of a force” in politics than it is today. 43 percent of respondents say the country is on the decline while only 30 percent say it is on the rise.

a3e9091ae

Respondents were, however, mostly optimistic about their personal circumstances over the next decade, and the survey’s findings changed dramatically when broken down by race, gender, and partisan affiliation.

Men are far more optimistic about the future and the opportunities available to their children than women, and Democrats are more optimistic about the economy than Republicans. Hispanics and African-Americans expressed more optimism about the future than did their white counterparts.

Only 34 percent of whites said the U.S. economy was headed on the “right track,” while 49 percent of blacks and 59 percent of Latinos agreed. 49 percent of African-Americans and 49 percent of Hispanics said they believed they would own a business in two years, while only 11 percent of whites shared that sentiment.

Happy Nomad on July 7, 2014 at 9:33 AM

That is where you and I disagree, I don’t think he is intelligent enough to destroy this nation.

I think he wanted to “re-invent” us, and the choices he has chosen is just plain idiotic and foolish.

He has a vision that is a fantasy, and he isn’t even smart enough to pursue that fantasy.

You give him way to much credit…he is a man whose “reality” is based on a fantasy that he has created, just like most foolish leaders that fail.

Deeming yourself as a savior of a nation is not the sign of a brilliant mind, or a mind that can plan so strategically that it destroys a nation…it is destroyed because a fool is in charge.

No more than Carter wanted to destroy us, it their belief that tactics proven to be a failure, time and time again, somehow become successful under their “skillful” leadership.

Sometimes it’s stupidity, sometimes it mental illness, and sometimes (more often) it’s a combination of the two.

But it all begins with a “vision” that is not based in reality…

Of course it will rather suck to live under the Empire relative to how well, and free, life was under the Republic, but Greatness demands great sacrifice. The lash will wring the last bits of maximized productivity out of each biological unit.

Posts such as this frustrate me, because if we are in decline it’s because we’re not right in the head. We still have children, we still have land, we still have wealth, and the explanation for decay is that we have CHOSEN decay. And if decay is where we are now, destruction is only one possible answer. Rebirth and renewal is another. England fell completely apart in the 1600s due to religious war, yet here it is today. Are we less than they? I think not.

If the Roman Empire had “thinkers” like those two in it’s leadership it would have fallen before 100AD.

On the other hand, it sort of did. The Roman Empire in the West fell apart from within LONG before the Germans kicked over the traces in 476. It started by devaluing citizenship, and the citizens feeling it beneath their station to serve in the Legions and everything being done by slaves and immigrants. The Roman economic system stopped working by the early 400′s and the feudal system more or less started up on it’s own.

That is pretty much where we are today, Rome about 420 AD or so.

The Feudal System worked, but it wasn’t pretty. Basically people who had been Roman Citizens gave that up to go into serfdom on the fortified estates called “latifundia” for protection in exchange for their labor. Small landholders, similarly had to give up their land to these large estates for the same reasons. When all law and order breaks down for good (collapse of the Western Empire) this sort of thing tends to happen.

Will something similar happen when our government breaks down? It is possible, but I doubt that the breakdown will be completely uniform. The heartland of America is still functional, it’s the rotted blue states and cities that are collapsing. Frankly, the Red States would be better off if the blue states were forced to live on their own resources…

Multilingual, multicultural societies neither function nor survive. It used to work here only because immigrants merged themselves into American Culture, but that hasn’t been happening in decades. But given today’s reality of a multitude of single taxpaying women, the Nineteenth should probably stay, even though it does the country no good.

Rix on July 7, 2014 at 9:51 AM

Re-read what you wrote, and you will see the lengths someone goes to when trying to defend something that does not make sense.

A “lie” that women were not allowed to vote, but voting was by taxpaying household, which was (in that time) controlled by the man…and women were “presumed” to be dependent, not independent.

Every once in a while, a poster uses an argument to defeat themselves…today was your day.

But at least you are honest (in your opinion), stating that voting women does the country no good…

The pendulum may swing back, but only a little bit. I don’t see a Reagan revolution on the horizon. I think people underestimate the changes that have occurred thanks to the Marxists controlling the schools and entertainment industry.

DisneyFan on July 7, 2014 at 10:40 AM

I agree with this. But I would add that things are going to turn out badly for the Marxists, too.

Capital is mobile and international now. So is talent. People don’t have loyalty to a place anymore. Countries now compete for wealth and talent.

The countries that will do best in the 21st century will be those that can offer an attractive range of services: low taxes, stable social structure, stable regulatory environment. Countries like Switzerland and Australia are positioning themselves nicely.

The US, with its massive debt overhang, increasing regulation, and growing illiterate (and violent) underclass, might find that most talent and wealth head for the exits.

49 percent of African-Americans and 49 percent of Hispanics said they believed they would own a business in two years

lol

will77jeff on July 7, 2014 at 10:45 AM

You have to understand their thinking. They don’t believe that they will build a business, but that the government will steal someone else’s business and give it to them (to run into the ground) in two years.

The same was said of Carter, or Nixon…the fact is, we just need a good leader and in 4-8 years we are back to “normal”…what has been done, can be undone.

Nothing is permanent, except for some peoples attitudes.

right2bright on July 7, 2014 at 10:53 AM

Nope. The damage is irreparable. It’s already been fatal. You can’t shake off death.

The only way an American Constitutional Republic will exist, again, is if it formed anew. Totally anew. This nation we are now subjects of – the American Socialist Superstate – will never revert back. It can’t. Too much has been broken and it has shown itself too eager throw away the Rule of Law at a moment’s notice to ever be trusted, again.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on July 7, 2014 at 10:51 AM

It doesn’t have to be completely re-created from scratch, after all, we have a rather good blueprint already made for us in the Constitution, what needs to happen is that we learn from 200 years of experience and reinforce it’s checks and balances so that government cannot escape the lockbox again.

To start with there needs to be swift and severe punishment for congressmen, senators, presidents, and judges that use their offices to subvert the Constitution.

But I get your point. We will never be a Constitutional Republic comprising of the entirety of what was the United States again, but the Republic will survive and even thrive in some part of it.

It’s because the “system” has failed them and they see no hope in actually working for someone, they are uneducated, and unschooled.

This is what the liberals have created, a mass of uneducated, unschooled, undisciplined, society.

Of course they won’t own their own business, but it’s their only hope…that or that someone in their family will be able to slam dunk a basketball better than the next guy…or win the lottery.

I don’t care what anyone said about Carter or Nixon. This is how things are with Barky. There is no comparison between Barky and any of “the other Presidents on the dollar bills”. None. And the rest of government never bent over backwards to let any of “the other Presidents on the dollar bills” do anything he wanted. There was no precedent in American history for what Barky did. None.

Nothing is permanent, except for some peoples attitudes.

Death is permanent and the American Constitutional Republic was killed. It’s dead. Gone. Six feet under. A corpse. History.

The original constitution. Not the one that has been destroyed with a number of amendments.
Scrap the part about allowing slavery and keep the 2 term limit on the presidency and you pretty much have what we need.
I would go a bit further though and give states even more power than they had before in restraining the federal government.

And, BTW, we don’t elect a President to be a “leader”. He is the individual head of one branch of government but he is not supposed to be “leading” anything other than foreign policy and our defense. I don’t know where this idea that we are looking for any sort of “leader” came from. I never wanted a “leader” in the Oval Office. I wanted someone who would faithfully execute the responsibilities of the office and not stray outside of the constraints of it. I don’t need to be led by anyone. I always wanted someone who would be led by the Constitutional duties and bounds.

Except for the years of Reagan and Coolidge, no respect for the Constitution has been paid beyond lip service since the War of the Northern Aggression.

ConstantineXI on July 7, 2014 at 11:03 AM

What are you talking about? Obama wants to destroy this nation.

Happy Nomad on July 7, 2014 at 9:33 AM

That is where you and I disagree, I don’t think he is intelligent enough to destroy this nation.

I think he wanted to “re-invent” us, and the choices he has chosen is just plain idiotic and foolish.
right2bright on July 7, 2014 at 9:42 AM

Right2bright – I don’t get how you one can square a belief Obama is not intelligent enough to destroy us in light of all he’s actually accomplished toward that goal.

Frankly, arguments about his intelligence are just mental masturbation. He is what he is and he is doing what he set out to do.

Obama is a progressive – a radical leftist. He is also narcissistic, intelligent, a true believer, and a terrible CEO/manager.

Alone, he would be ineffectual – he would never succeed as a business manager, entrepreneur or anything requiring real work.

But as a politician/president, the support structure he has around him, the Valerie Jarret’s, leftist grassroots organizations, government bureaucracy, lack of accountability, butt-kiss-media, ineffectual opposition party, etc. enables him to be the figurehead who leads in enacting a program that is radically changing America.

At the end of the day, it does,’t matter in the least if he is smart or stupid – it’s still happening.

And we need to focus like a laser on stopping it and reversing the damages done.

2/3rds of state legislatures should be able to override any act of Congress.

Also the voting franchise must be denied to those on government assistance or on the government payroll. If you work for government, you work for the People, which means you should not be allowed to vote.

Want to vote? Get a private sector job. Want to vote? Get a job and EARN your food. Never again should a political party be able to base itself solely on buying votes with taxpayer dollars.

There also need to be term limits for public “service” no more than 12 years in one’s lifetime can be spent at any level, Congress, the judiciary, or President. It’s supposed to be service, not a career.

And, no standing army beyond that needed to secure our borders and maintain infrastructure (such as ships, bases, etc). The military should consist solely of Militia which is all volunteer. This would prevent DC from running off into unpopular foreign adventures, as well as give the States a veto over such acts, since States have to agree to release their militias to the Federal government.
