Rick Perry gets a scolding for saying Obama doesn’t want to do anything about border security

posted at 12:31 pm on July 6, 2014 by Noah Rothman

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has some nerve. He had the gall to assert in an appearance on ABC’s This Week that the virtual refugee crisis on America’s southern border is not simply a legal problem but a problem of border security. Moreover, Perry seemed to be getting the tinfoil hat treatment when he stood by his claim that the White House doesn’t seem to mind this crisis all that much.

Perry began his contentious interview about border security with ABC’s Martha Raddatz by outlining the multiple petitions he sent Washington seeking redress for the issue of unaccompanied minors crossing the border illegally.

Perry insisted, while conceding that Texas currently has seven border patrol agents per mile, it is not enough.

“This is about a law,” Raddatz pushed back. “This isn’t necessarily about border patrol, this is about a law.” She noted that migrant children from non-contiguous nations, like Honduras and El Salvador, must be taken into the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services in order to comply with a law which George W. Bush signed in 2008 and which Barack Obama is seeking to amend.

Perry didn’t take the bait. “The rule of law is that the Constitution requires the United States to secure the border,” he said.

Raddatz pressed. “Isn’t this a backlog in the courts,” she asked. “Doesn’t that have to be addressed first?”

It does seem self-evidently true that the law protecting migrant children would not come into play if those migrant children were unable to pierce America’s border security so easily. This point did not get a thorough parsing, however, because Perry committed a cardinal sin in the next breath when he suggested that malicious negligence on Obama’s part was at play.

“I don’t believe he particularly cares whether or not the border of the United States is secure,” Perry claimed.

“He’s telling people not to come,” Raddatz interjected. “He’s telling them in ads not to come into the United States.”

“About five years too late,” Perry laughed.

Things began to get tense when Raddatz asked Perry to answer for comments he made on Fox News suggesting there is what she characterized as a “conspiracy” to allow illegal immigrants to enter the U.S.

“They either are inept or don’t care,” the Texas governor insisted.

Raddatz is a strong interviewer, host, and moderator, and the adversarial approach should be applied to both Democrats and Republicans. Perry got a good grilling here, and that serves the audience far better than the accommodating lines of questioning and profile packages which sometimes must suffice for hard-hitting Sunday morning programming.

This was, however, an odd line of questioning to adopt that aggressive posture. The desperate Nicaraguan parents who endeavor to undertake the journey to the United States are not aware of the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008. Even if they are, it is just one of a handful of incentives which keep immigrants flooding over the border. The circumstances these immigrants are escaping are all the incentive they need to make the journey north.

Some say that is an argument for immigration reform, and it is. It is also an argument for increased border security – security which cannot be thwarted by, as the documentarian Alexandra Pelosi documented, tools as simple as a ladder.

I saw the interview this morning. Perry did quite well. Normally you’ll get Republican politicians who will quickly back down and say “Sure, we’re at fault too and everybody’s to blame.” Not so with Perry. He kept the failure focused on the border and on the Obama administration, where all attention should be.

Stoic Patriot on July 6, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Yes its so clear that Obama wants the border secured! And wasn’t Biden a guest at Raddatz’s wedding? She sure was a fair moderator during the 2012 VP debate…

Snipers.

Also, make the fences transparent so you can see whats happening on the other side. Electric fences? Moats with gators? Hadrians Wall?

Lots of choices. You just need the will to do it.

Look, it’s as simple as this. We have to follow the law as regards to the little darlings already here, but we need to secure that border. It really is a simple as that. High walls guarded by Americans with guns. Cross the line, get a free hunk of lead, courtesy of Uncle Sam.

Harsh, I know, but we are being invaded.

john1schn on July 6, 2014 at 12:48 PM

Perry is absolutely right that this is intentional and that the Obama admin doesn’t care. What he didn’t say is why. The why is that Obama is using immigration as a tool to “fundamentally (demographically) transform” the country.

Gov’t Confirms Authenticity of Contract Request for ‘Escort Services for Unaccompanied Alien Children’ at the Border
A recently discovered government request for “escort services for unaccompanied alien children” dating back to January is raising questions about whether the government was planning for a surge of illegal immigrants this year as amnesty talks heated up in the United States.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed the request to TheBlaze, which is for transportation companies to escort children from the U.S.-Mexico border to relocation facilities throughout the United States. The conservative website Weasel Zippers was among the first to notice it.

While I generally agree that Perry is not a much a stalwart as I would like him to be on the subject of what to do with illegals once they are here, he is 100% correct on how to manage entry to this country. There needs to be a way to stop the invasion. We can deal with the ones that are here once that happens. First, stop the invasion.

Showdown over immigration: ‘This is an invasion’
(CNN) — The national controversy over a surge of Central American immigrants illegally crossing the U.S. border established a new battleground this week in a small Southern California town, where angry crowds stopped detained migrants from entering their community.
“This is an invasion,” attendee Heidi Klute said before a full house. “Why isn’t the National Guard stopping them from coming in?”

An Illegal invasion, in more ways than one!

DinaRehn on July 6, 2014 at 1:09 PM

Raddatz is a strong interviewer, host, and moderator, and the adversarial approach should be applied to both Democrats and Republicans.

BS. Raddatz is a sycophant and was just spewing the leftists’ talking points that you can see on Daily Kos. If he really was a strong interviewer he would’ve counter balanced his personal views and personal defense of his party with more objective questioning of where Perry wanted to go with his accusations – Is Perry calling for impeachment? Does Perry want to militarize the border?

This entire “interview” was nothing more than a verbal flamefest the likes of which takes place here EVERY day and EVERY hour.

Skywise on July 6, 2014 at 1:10 PM

It does seem self-evidently true that the law protecting migrant children would not come into play if those migrant children were unable to pierce America’s border security so easily.

The law also would not come into play if migrant children from Central America were unable to get through Mexico so easily.

Really. Mexico has some of the toughest immigration laws on the planet. Yet these hordes are able to pass through roughly 2000 miles of Mexican territory and camp on our border, to wait for resettlement by the Obama administration. How is this possible? Either the usual suspects are being paid off in Mexico by the smugglers, or the Mexican government is actively colluding with the Obama administration and its enablers in the Republican establishment to foment this so-called humanitarian crisis.

Joseph K on July 6, 2014 at 1:11 PM

Some say that is an argument for immigration reform [amnesty], and it is.

Noah Rothman means illegal alien amnesty when he says “immigration reform.”

Takes some nerve for someone to claim that this latest influx, partly created by the rumor of amnesty, would be solved by full blown illegal alien amnesty. That’s the same claim open borders La Raza operatives are making.

VIDEO: Noah Rothman attempts to argue that illegal alien amnesty is something a principled conservative would support – http://youtu.be/91x7GBml9ik (Skip to about 6:00 mark)

bluegill on July 6, 2014 at 1:13 PM

Some say that is an argument for immigration reform, and it is.

No, it is NOT. And by “immigration reform” I trust you mean some form of amnesty, pathway to citizenship, legalization, yada yada, as in SB 744, McCain-Kennedy 2006, 2007 (twice), etc.

That same bad logic would say that handing out passkeys to everyone would solve the burglary problem.

That same bad logic would tell a ship captain to, when confronted with a giant leak in his vessel, to skip plugging the leak and bailing out the bilge, and merely declare the incoming seawater to be cargo.

The new increased flood at the border is caused by the giant billboard of the 2012 DACA Executive Order, saying to the whole world, “Come on in; the water’s fine!”

Solution: rescind (and publicize the rescission of) DACA, BEGIN enforcing our existing laws, correct them where necessary (the 2008 non-Mexican illegal alien non-immediate return law), and evaluate every law and every proposed law to remove all aspects that incentivize illegal immigration (state laws for drivers licenses, in-state tuition, etc.).

That is what the vast majority of Americans want:

http://www.jmisys.com/immigrationmarches/zogby5.html

And here is how it works:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxe1WO27B_I

And if we can’t deport non-Mexicans at our southern border, why not deliver them to their own nearest embassy or consulate, and let THEIR government clothe, feed, and house them.

Finally, the “death trains” from Mexico’s southern border to our southern border have been an open “secret” for years (see 2010 CNN story — search yourself). There is NO VALID REASON for the Mexican government to allow thousands of people to ride openly on the tops and sides of these trains for thousands of miles.

Imagine if we started trains from the Rio Grand river direct to Canada — you think Canada might object?

Nope. Raddatz is working hard to protect the president. I don’t expect to ever hear her ask where all those “magic word” leaflets came from.

Perry got a good grilling here, and that serves the audience far better than the accommodating lines of questioning and profile packages which sometimes must suffice for hard-hitting Sunday morning programming.

Well, Perry is not a progressive. The soft, “What’s been your most enchanting moment?” type questions are reserved for Obama and his supporters. Tell me you’ve noticed.

The desperate Nicaraguan parents who endeavor to undertake the journey to the United States are not aware of the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008.

All they know is :
1) Get to America. They’re giving away free stuff to everyone who comes.
2) Say these magic words and you’ll never have to go home. Free stuff forever!

Some say that is an argument for immigration reform, and it is. It is also an argument for increased border security – security which cannot be thwarted by, as the documentarian Alexandra Pelosi documented, tools as simple as a ladder.

Way to finish up with the White House talking point!

The fact is, since Obama has completely ignored existing law, there’s no sense caving in to another “Give the progressives what they want now in exchange for empty promises to be broken at a later date” type deal. The GOP may want to deal this way, but We the People really have had enough of this sh!t. The GOP can stick to their guns and stick it to Obama or cease to exist as a party.

But by all means, keep trying to sell the Progressive talking points. With each article, you lose credibility here.

Well what the hell does Rick Perry want to do about it? And why the hell isn’t he doing it?

I want to read a news story about the border states defying the federal government and DEFENDING THEMSELVES against this Washington-orchestrated mass influx of future Democrats that is laying waste to those states. ABC’s Martha Raddatz claims “this is about a law”; as long as the states go along with that scam and submit passively to a rule of law that the feds long ago turned their backs on and obviously have no intention whatsoever to enforce – EVER – they are voluntarily rendering themselves powerless and letting themselves be Obama’s bitches. It is years past time for the states to live up to their responsibility and sole justification for existing and protect the interests of their citizens, not only against Mexico and Honduras and Guatemala and El Salvador, but against the United States of America.

Then, force them to work in the fields harvesting our crops without even prison pay. Sentence them to six-months labor, so they don’t get used to it. Perry gets scolded ? How trite can you get .
Martha Rachet is a nasty piece of work and
probably only gets to scold her husband .

Lucano on July 6, 2014 at 1:41 PM

Desperate Nicaraguan parents? With Leftist hero Ortega I charge? That cannot be! Kick them out!

If 0 and his media cronies wanted to promote this poor widdle refugee meme, they should have laid the groundwork better with incessant heartbreaking stories of despair, cruelty and starvation. Instead we have well-fed, if filthy illegals in secretive surroundings. I does not pass any sort of smell test.

I still say deport them and rapidly. But as they will probably linger send them to Philly, Chicago, or New York areas already infected with scabies, lice bedbugs and democrats.

clnurnberg on July 6, 2014 at 1:41 PM

That is perfection in the illustration of that ill ‘logic’.
I’m going to borrow that line, if you don’t mind

The new increased flood at the border is caused by the giant billboard of the 2012 DACA Executive Order, saying to the whole world, “Come on in; the water’s fine!”

Solution: rescind (and publicize the rescission of) DACA, BEGIN enforcing our existing laws, correct them where necessary (the 2008 non-Mexican illegal alien non-immediate return law), and evaluate every law and every proposed law to remove all aspects that incentivize illegal immigration (state laws for drivers licenses, in-state tuition, etc.).

fred5678 on July 6, 2014 at 1:14 PM

BEGIN enforcing our existing laws – What a concept!

We don’t need no stinking plan – just enforce the existing laws, is that too difficult for the Liar-in-Chief to figure out?

VegasRick on July 6, 2014 at 1:47 PM

Okay, I’m a simpleton who thinks in simple terms, but why have Perry and Brewer, governors of their respective states, NOT called out the National Guard to enforce their borders? Governors do it all the time for other crises such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Is this not a natural disaster (albeit of our own making)? In other words, isn’t it past the point for state(s) to tell the various Feds to sit down and shut the f*** up?

Infidelius on July 6, 2014 at 1:47 PM

White House doesn’t seem to mind this crisis all that much.

Gov’t Confirms Authenticity of Contract Request for ‘Escort Services for Unaccompanied Alien Children’ at the Border
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed the request to TheBlaze, which is for transportation companies to escort children from the U.S.-Mexico border to relocation facilities throughout the United States. The conservative website Weasel Zippers was among the first to notice it.

The application, dated Jan. 29, is posted on Federal Business Opportunities, a website that advertises government contract openings.

DinaRehn on July 6, 2014 at 1:48 PM

This issue is very simple – if they’re really refugees, then the parents will have no problem forgoing voting rights for one generation, (thirty years).

So when the amnesty crowd balks at that, we know the truth.

Perry’s a goof for going on with Raddatz. All the 2012 pushback about how she wasn’t partisan, just because Barry was at her wedding, proved to be bullshite. Only Crowley was more biased than Martha.

Hang YEAH !

From last night’s QOTD, I responded to an OpEd by Janet Murguía :

. . . . . There is nothing more un-American than showing not even one shred of sympathy, compassion, or even decency towards a group of desperate young children who showed up on our doorstep after having spent weeks on a treacherous journey. There is nothing more un-American than deliberately frightening an already traumatized group of kids, some still in diapers. There is nothing more un-American than a mob taking the law into their own hands and preventing authorities from doing the work of processing these refugees. What we saw was not patriotism — it was ugly, divisive, and yet another low for a debate that I thought could not get much lower.

But I reserved my greatest scorn for the Mayor of Murrieta, Alan Long. It was he who incited his constituents to protest and let law enforcement look the other way. It was he who recklessly demagogued the issue to spare himself a political problem and is now crying crocodile tears about the “black eye” media coverage he has given his town. He took an epic, immensely complicated humanitarian situation that involves broken policymaking both in Central America and in the U.S. and pointed the finger of blame at a bus full of little kids and babies.

What is so craven about Long’s “blame-the-victim” strategy is that he and the anti-immigrant extremists he unleashed not only blocked a couple of buses, they continue to block every single attempt at a humane and effective solution by reasonable policymakers on both sides of the aisle. Egged on by shameless demagogues like Long at the local level and lawmakers like Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) at the national level, the small but loud anti-immigrant movement like the one on display in Murrieta is the single biggest reason we do not yet have comprehensive immigration reform.
.
Janet Murguía @huffingtonpost.com on July 4, 2014 at 6:34 PM

.
Neither Alan Long (Mayor of Murrieta) nor any of the rest of the protesters BLAME THE ILLEGAL ALIEN CHILDREN.

We blame the President Barack Obama as well as any and everyone aiding and abetting the President in orchestrating this INVASION (and that would include YOU by extension, Janet) for deliberately USING these foreign children AS A WEAPON against the citizens of the United States.
.
When we send these kids back to their places of origin, we should send you with them, Janet.

But in the interim, how many can you put up at your house, Janet?

CANDY CROWLEY: Do you think the President will get the $2 billion plus that he’s asking for to meet this emergency situation with more help at the border, more social workers to deal with the children?

REP. HENRY CUELLAR
: Well, again we got border patrol securing the border right now as you can see behind us but the President has asked for some money, he certainly can move some money around, and we can handle that at the end if we want to. Again, let’s keep in mind with all due respect to the administration they are one step behind. They should have seen this coming a long time ago. They should have seen this a long time ago because we saw those numbers increasing. We are hoping we can get that money so we can provide more detention spaces, more flights down there, and again, if we put those young children and those mothers in the right caregivers in those countries I think this would solve. There is an incentive, there is an incentive that if you bring a child over here or your child by themselves, you’re going to be let go. And that is exactly what is happening. Our immigration courts are so backlogged, there is not enough detention spaces and therefore this is the incentive that we have to take away and that is the 2008 human trafficking law that needs to be changed at this time.

CANDY CROWLEY
: Congressman, I want to give the mayor the last word because I hear him agreeing with you but first before I leave the congressman, President Obama is coming to Texas this week. As I understand it at least thus far he has no plans to visit the border. How does that strike you?

CUELLAR: Well, again it would be nice for him to come down to the border but again with all due respect I think he is still one step behind. They knew this was happening a year ago. Last year and again they are not reacting fast enough at this time in my opinion.

So it took from 2008 until now for these people to get to our borders? And which “desperate Nicaraguan parents” are these that let their children come alone? I wonder what the healthcare people, bound by gag orders, are really seeing in these kids. I am sure NO ONE is taking advantage of this situation. And as usual the compliant press just plays along with their master.

But here is a prime example of a story targeted toward intimidating mean old nasty Republican from speaking what’s on his mind. Because we all know how well McCain and Romney (and Bush) did by censoring their criticisms for fear of being called a name or two.

Raddatz is another mouthpiece for Obama. There was nothing objective about her interview. She is worried about the law. Hello – what law does Obama care about ? No law.

WTF is going on around here? DHS took out an ad to shepherd 65,000 of them in January. Over 300,000 total have crossed the border and been delivered to “relatives” in the past year by the Obama administration.
