Weird: Obama’s latest pivot to the economy sounds a lot like a campaign pitch

posted at 7:21 pm on July 1, 2014 by Noah Rothman

This month, the nation was rocked by the news that the American economy contracted in the first quarter of 2014 for the first time in three years, and not by just a little bit. A revision to the first quarter’s GDP revealed that the economy shrank by nearly 3 percent. While economists predict that economic activity will gain steam over the course of the year, the International Monetary Fund revised 2014’s expected GDP growth from 2.7 to just 2 percent.

It is with this dismal economic news as a backdrop that President Barack Obama pivoted, again, back to the economy. It seems, however, that President Obama’s economic pitch has little to do with revving America’s economic engine and much more to do with snarking about Republicans before crowds of supporters.

In a speech on Tuesday in front of the Key Bridge in Washington, D.C., Obama informed a grateful nation that he is seeking more funding to build more “roads and bridges.” If this proposal sounds familiar to you, you’re not imagining things, as this bit of analysis from National Review’s Jim Geraghty explains:

Back in 2009, Congress made “the largest new investment in America’s infrastructure since the Interstate Highway System” and then spends about $52 billion per year, and yet we’re still hearing the same complaints about “crumbling roads and bridges.”

A Google search shows 111 news articles in recent weeks using the phrase, “crumbling roads and bridges.” (Overall on the web, 321,000.)

No matter how much we spend, we keep getting told that our infrastructure is crumbling like a stale doughnut and we absolutely must spend more. What, have we been building bridges out of balsa wood? Are we resurfacing our roads with graham crackers?

Obama’s speech revealed that this event wasn’t aimed at building support for substantive proposals, but reinforcing narratives about his opponents in the GOP.

“It’s not crazy. It’s not socialism. It’s not the imperial presidency,” Obama asserted defensively. “We’re just building roads and bridges like we’ve been doing have for the past, I don’t know, 50, 100 years.”

Obama then pivoted away from the economy and back to attacking the Republican House. “So far, Republicans have failed to act on this idea,” he said. I haven’t heard a good reason why they haven’t acted. It’s not like they’ve been busy with other stuff.”

Republicans cannot head into the midterms hoping that anti-Obama sentiment will be enough to capture the majority of seats in the upper chamber of Congress. The GOP needs a positive agenda to pitch to the American people, but the same goes for the Democrats. Asserting that the Republicans are mean and voting for the president’s party is a vote for the same “roads and bridges” that they failed to deliver when Democrats passed the Stimulus does not seem like a winning message.

The GOP needs a positive agenda to pitch to the American people, but the same goes for the Democrats.

I guess the buying of democrat votes for the price of a bottle of Mogan David in order to steal an election from a refreshing, young conservative is part of the ‘positive agenda’ the GOP is aiming for?

Conducting their affairs like the dastardly Democratic thugocracy is not the way to do it in my view.

After the ugliness wrought in Mississippi last Tuesday, they not only lost the Miss. Senate seat, they more than likely cost themselves the Senate majority and they will be damned lucky to keep control of the house.

And that was the plan of the dems from the get go and the RINOs bought it hook, line and sinker.

The DoT is no different then the VA, their mission is no longer to provide a workable transportation system, it’s to feed itself and the bureaucracy’s under them. There is no fixing this system, you could double the budget and not see anymore infrastructure improvement. The cost to lay a mile of road costs 100 times more today then it did fifty years ago, even adjusted for inflation, but the roads are no better. The cost is in people/bureaucrats in government offices doing two hours of paperwork and calling it an eight hour day.
How many times do we need to be taught the lesson that larger government only demands more money and still larger government?

Obama on Highway Plan: “It’s Not Crazy, It’s Not Socialism, It’s Not The Imperial Presidency”
*******************

PRESIDENT OBAMA: So the plan we put together would support millions of jobs. It would give cities, and states, and private investors the certainty they need to plan ahead. It would help small businesses ship their goods faster, help parents get home to their kids faster. And it wouldn’t add to the deficits –- because we’d pay for it in part by closing tax loopholes for companies that are shipping their profits overseas to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Seems like a sensible thing to do.

It’s not crazy, it’s not socialism. It’s not the imperial presidency — no laws are broken. We’re just building roads and bridges like we’ve been doing for the last, I don’t know, 50, 100 years. But so far, House Republicans have refused to act on this idea. I haven’t heard a good reason why they haven’t acted — it’s not like they’ve been busy with other stuff. No, seriously. I mean, they’re not doing anything. Why don’t they do this?

90% of these “crumbling roads and bridges” work will be preformed by union labor.

Pelosi handled the a 900 billion omnibus bill when she took over the House and tons of that money went to unions and every other crony that “invested” in putting Democrats back in charge in the House. Then, shortly after, came the 987 billion STIMULUS/PORKULUS BILL that was basically a rinse and repeat. (Remember, sheriff Joe Biden was going to oversee all of this money.

Damn near two trillion when out to “the infrastructure” and what have we got? Now Obama feels it time once again to fill the union contractor coffers just soon enough to get the campaign dollars flowing back into the Democrat’s pockets. BULL! Guess that since those crazy hard drives all blew up at the IRS, no need to pay attention to the IRS being used as a Gestapo against all of his political opponents.

Yup, now is the perfect time to yet again ask for more money for “roads and bridges”, as apparently the billions alloted for that in the (anti)stimulus back in ’09 weren’t enough.

“We’re just building roads and bridges like we’ve been doing have for the past, I don’t know, 50, 100 years.”

The Highway Trust Fund is going to soon be insolvent. Fact.
The Highway Trust Fund is funded through the Federal Gas Tax. Fact.
The Highway Trust Fund is spending more money than it takes in. Fact.
Over $50 Billion has been redistributed from the General Fund to the Trust fund to kick the can down the road. Fact.

There is a shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund and it will become insolvent. There are several choices:
1. Reduce outlays. (States squeal because they don’t get their federal dollars back that their residents paid in gas and usage taxes).
2. Increase fuel tax or other usage taxes. (Business as usual on Highway Spending.)
3. Leave the gas tax alone and reduce the scope of the HTF to only Federal Roads (Interstates, etc) and make the states pick up the entire tab for their own highway infrastructure.
4. Eliminate the HTF and let the States and locals handle it.

Missed that the first time I read it.

We don’t need more roads and bridges, we can’t afford to drive anywhere.

The only shovel ready project that worked was Ted Kennedy’s funeral

Will dear leader serve pie when the economists come over for lunch today?

He is pivoting on the economy as one would do the ball of their foot on top of a cigarette butt.

To those people who were there when the President delivered his small-minded “speech” all I can say is that you represent the ill-informed and totally mindless robots that the Democratic party is counting on.
