Obama: I guess I’m going to have to fix our immigration system on my own

posted at 5:21 pm on June 30, 2014 by Allahpundit

Via the Corner, it’s interesting that he picked a day when the media’s consumed with SCOTUS news to pull this. Maybe he figures that all the lefties who care about amnesty will notice regardless whereas independents, from whom he fears a potential backlash, might be distracted. Never underestimate how short the low-information voter’s attention span can be, my friends.

Wait a sec. He’s using unilateral executive action to … increase border security?

The move was spurred by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, telling the president the House had no plans to vote on any immigration legislation this year, a White House official said.

“I would greatly prefer Congress actually do something. I take executive action only when we have a serious problem, a serious issue, and Congress chooses to do nothing.,” Mr. Obama said Monday in the Rose Garden of the White House. “And in this situation the failure of House Republicans to pass a darn bill is bad for security, its bad for our economy, and its bad for our future.”

Mr. Obama intends to direct Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) Jeh Johnson and Attorney General Eric Holder to move “available and appropriate enforcement resources” from the interior of the country down to the southern border.

“Protecting public safety is and will remain a top priority, and we will continue to focus on removing those who have committed serious crimes from our interior, but we will redirect other resources to make sure we keep doing what it takes to keep our border secure,” the official said.

Last I checked, he was planning to ask Congress to change a few Bush-era rules so that he can expedite deportations of young illegals to Central America. It makes sense that he’d be a stickler for legislative authority on that; invoking executive authority to beef up the border is precisely the opposite of what his base wants him to do. And yet … here he is, invoking executive authority to beef up the border. Hmmm.

Maybe he’s thinking strategically. He knows he’s eventually going to issue an order relaxing deportation protocols for illegals who are already here and he also knows he’s going to catch hell from Republicans for it. So he’s throwing them a curveball, using executive authority to temporarily improve border security to disarm GOP attacks. This achieves three things for him: It “proves” that he can be trusted to enforce new security provisions if Congress passes a comprehensive deal; it slows the flow of young illegals, which has become a major political obstacle on the path to a mass amnesty; and, assuming the GOP puts up no fuss, it sets a precedent that Republicans are just fine with bold executive action when it’s in the service of their own immigration goals. That’s a lame “gotcha” since there’s nothing objectionable about the president re-positioning security assets, but rest assured that O will bring it up when, not if, he eventually issues his executive order on deportations. “How come Republicans are whining about executive overreach today but didn’t whine when I sent more Border Patrol down south a few weeks ago?” Today is all about the laying the groundwork, I think. That’s why Luis Gutierrez is excited. He knows what’s coming.

Exit question: Which article of the Constitution sets forth this principle? Quote: “I take executive action only when we have a serious problem, a serious issue and Congress chooses to do nothing.” I believe that’s the “I get to do sh*t if Congress doesn’t” clause, no?

burrata on June 30, 2014 at 6:30 PM

Seems to me he’s doing this because there’s nothing else he can do from the left. He’s already not deporting anyone; his deportation numbers have been as accurate as his Obamacare numbers, and in the same direction. He’s not enforcing the border, and he knows this recent invasion is entirely his making.

I think he’s also been told that it’s not just 4 year old kids making the long, lonely and dangerous trek from Central America, but that some of the folks crossing over are Mexican criminal elements and probably a fair number of jihadists.

He’s bluffing, and his cards suck.

Wait a sec. He’s using unilateral executive action to … increase border security?

As if

It will be used to keep media and militia away from the border. And it will be a funding sinkhole Obama can redirect to bus more illegals in under cover

Pretty good staging.
1. He opened the borders and let the coverage reach a fever pitch.
He needed the pics of the great unwashed and articles about disease

He needed some danger too. Mexican helicopter attack was so timely you’d think someone made a phone call and requested a favor

2. This will open the pockets of the GOP (who are with him on this anyway) to fund a so called closing of the border

3. There will be a new federal presence on the border to keep Americans from documenting the continued flow in. The busing drops of illegals will continue because there is no place where anyone can get the data about the busing

Think they dont remember what happened to Bush with the MinuteMen?

That will not happen again.

Oh, and if any border guard snitches he loses his pension

Have you seen GOP big shots holding hearings about the border guards being threatened for spilling the beans? No. The GOP for some reason cant get enough IRS scandal.

This entire “crisis” was orchestrated by Obama and his minions in the DHS.

This is EXACTLY the same as Fast and Furious. Create a “crisis”, gin up enough outrage so Obama can do amnesty by fiat. Same exact play, same exact game, just different players.

Meople on June 30, 2014 at 8:09 PM

Exit question: Which article of the Constitution sets forth this principle? Quote: “I take executive action only when we have a serious problem, a serious issue and Congress chooses to do nothing.” I believe that’s the “I get to do sh*t if Congress doesn’t” clause, no?

You’re exactly right Allah. It’s complete and utter BS that he thinks he can rule by fiat. If the GOP actually represented the values of the party, they’d begin impeachment proceedings the instant be pulls this crap. Of course, that being said, they would have begun impeachment against him years ago for all the other crap he’s pulled too – so I’m not holding my breath that Boner and the other useless idiots will do the right thing.

Will the military please step in and arrest this guy? They take an oath to uphold and protect the Constitution.

Sure all hell will break loose but it’s going to anyway. Might as well get it over.

darwin on June 30, 2014 at 5:39 PM

It’s my opinion that we are at the tipping point. If a large entity like the military or congress doesn’t do something we’ll have individuals and small groups doing crazy things. All it will take is one more straw. If there is a terrorist attack for instance people will really be ready to march on the White House.

crankyoldlady on June 30, 2014 at 8:20 PM

My wife said the liberals where she works … who usually support Obama without question … are going absolutely batsh!t crazy over this illegal crap. They can’t believe what he’s doing.

She really wants to say “I told you so” but is holding back.

Government by fiat. You would think that even the lefties would see the danger in this.

major dad on June 30, 2014 at 5:24 PM

We did…back in 2004. Congrats you won the argument and it’s an imperial presidency.

You didn’t really think through your adoration of Bush’s unilateral actions, did you?

Tlaloc on June 30, 2014 at 5:45 PM

Yeah, that was brilliant of you to pick up on Bush’s unilateral actions.

Like when Bush intervened in a foreign country in the Middle East without consulting Congress.

No, wait, that was Obama in Libya.

Ok, then there was the time that the Senate held pro forma sessions every three days to be sure that Bush didn’t make any recess appointments, then he made them anyway.

No, wait, that was Obama too.

How about when Bush warned that one country that using chemical weapons would cross a red line without consulting Congress to see if they would back him up? Boy, that was embarrassing when he had to climb down from that unilateral threat, wasn’t it?

No, wait, that was Obama too.

This is just way too easy.

You bunch of idiots keep warning about the dangers of executive overreach from Bush, then watch all the warnings come true … for Obama.

Compare the two, and it’s perfectly obvious which one ignores Congress and seems to think he’s a dictator rather than a president.

There Goes the Neighborhood on June 30, 2014 at 8:34 PM

Do you read this site, bw? How many thousand posts do I need to write opposing amnesty before it registers that I’m anti-amnesty?

Will 10,000 do it? At the rate we’re going, I think I can get there by the end of summer.

Allahpundit on June 30, 2014 at 6:05 PM

I haven’t seen any of you “promoting” amnesty but it probably looks like it to some purists because you lay out all the opinions that are part of the news.

With Pravda and Izvestia on board, Obama can say whatever he wants. His problem is, every time he uses his pen and phone he screws something up. Actually, if he only did what he said he wanted to do, he would be doing his job, that’s pretty unique.

The Republicans, on the other hand, are really dumb for not proposing legislation to fix our immigration system. The problem appears that Boehner wants to cave on amnesty, rather than fix the system, and he knows it will cost him.

I sincerely hope the Republicans get new leadership, after the November election, what they have now is pathetic.

Allah? Mary Katharine? Ed, you are a big amnesty supporter – how is amnesty good for the United States and its citizens?

bw222 on June 30, 2014 at 5:55 PM

You won’t get an answer because, of course, amnesty is terrible for the American people and future generations.

fight like a girl on June 30, 2014 at 9:17 PM

It’s interesting that at the end of last week he was talking dirt about being sued by the Republicans in the house for doing his job. This week he is telling us he has to use his power to do his job because the Republicans in the House will not do their job. In short, if the Republicans in the house would pass amnesty and open the boarder like he told them to, he would not need to “do his job” and write “his” laws and enforce them.

Don’t let his words fool you. Remember he at the end of last week he told us he wants Congress to give him money to pick up, house, process and transport the flood of illegals to the interior of our country for release. Nothing in there was about securing the boarders or returning them to the countries they came from.

Now he wants to remove agents from the interior where he is sending the illegals to the boarder where they will assist in processing them for release into our country, to the interior where he is removing agents. Make the disappearing a lot more easier than before.

Nothing has changed. This is simply a new twist to try and dissuade Congress from suing him for his illegal use of his executive power while, as some have pointed out, giving him some cover if he is sued, or legitimizing his whine for those clueless voters who really don’t understand what is going on.

Franklyn on June 30, 2014 at 9:22 PM

bflat879 on June 30, 2014 at 8:52 PM It’s a unique irony that his pen and phone tend to blow up in his face routinely like the terrorist swap. This I imagine will blow up in his face as well Obama trying to solve something via executive action tends to lead to often more screwing up. The founders made the president unable to legislate even through feit…

sorrowen on June 30, 2014 at 9:23 PM

Republicans openly decided to try to shut down government as much as possible in response to the election of that man. Guess what, you fail to govern someone else will step into the vacuum and do the job you neglected.

Sorry that gives you a sad.

Tlaloc on June 30, 2014 at 6:33 PM

Right, if Congress doesn’t pass the laws the President wants; the President becomes a dictator with no limits on power and can write laws himself.

It’s in the Constitution… somewhere. I don’t have my secret decoder ring to find the clause that liberals are conviction remove all limits on government power; but they’re CERTAIN it’s in there somewhere.

If you don’t do what liberals want; they’ll violate laws and the Constitution to do it anyway… that’s why you should do what liberals want.

They don’t WANT to break laws and grab power for themselves; you’re forcing them to do this by not doing exactly what they say without question.

They just don’t have a choice, you’ve pushed them to break laws by not rewriting laws to make what they’re doing legal. And you’re pushing me to be an illegal bank robber by not rewriting laws to let me rob banks legally… I have no choices.

Not rob banks? Ha, craziness; now you’re just joking with me.

gekkobear on June 30, 2014 at 9:23 PM

Let him jump if he feels froggy…. because EVERY crime committed by EVERY illegal he lets through is going to hang around the Democrat Party’s neck like a rotting albatross. They’re in this together, so whatever he does, he does in their name.
