Bad news for Democrats: Clinton wealth still hot topic in media

posted at 12:01 pm on June 27, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

And that’s not good news for either of the Clintons, not now and certainly not for 2016 when Hillary Clinton plans to run for the nomination of the party that’s made class warfare its central strategy. The problem began almost three weeks ago, when Hillary began insisting that the Clintons were “dead broke” at the end of their time in the White House and are not “truly well off” now despite having made at least $100 million in book sales and speaking fees over the last 13 years. As she “struggled” to differentiate herself from the Democrats’ class-warfare bête noir Mitt Romney, Bill attempted to backstop his wife.

And all of that gave the media yet another opening to explore the Clintons’ wealth and the manner in which it was acquired. The Washington Post today dissected Bill Clinton’s income in a manner which will hardly look attractive to the Democratic base that fulminates over the One Percent:

Over seven frenetic days, Bill Clinton addressed corporate executives in Switzerland and Denmark, an investors’ group in Sweden and a cluster ofbusiness and political leaders in Austria. The former president wrapped up his European trip in the triumphant Spanish Hall at Prague Castle, where he shared his thoughts on energy to a Czech business summit.

His pay: $1.4 million.

That lucrative week in May 2012 offers a glimpse into the way Clinton has leveraged his global popularity into a personal fortune. Starting just two weeks after exiting the Oval Office, Clinton has delivered hundreds of paid speeches, lifting a family that was “dead broke,” as wife Hillary Rodham Clinton phrased it earlier this month, to a point of such extraordinary wealth that it is now seen as a potential political liability if she runs for president in 2016.

Bill Clinton has earned more than $100 million just for his speeches between 2001 and 2013, apart from what Hillary Clinton earns for hers or from what both receive from their memoirs. He has earned more speaking abroad ($56.3 million) than he has at home, which may raise more than a few eyebrows about the baggage that could carry in a presidential campaign. Combined with Hillary Clinton’s speech income — which is not public — and her massive bonuses for her two memoirs (more than $20 million combined), it’s clear that the Clintons are very truly well off.

Plus, as Chuck Todd pointed out today on Morning Joe, it’s not as if this wealth came from wise business investment and job-creating risk acumen. It entirely trades on their celebrity and connection to power:

And let’s remember how they acquired their wealth. They didn’t do it in some incredible business, creating jobs and all this. They just acquired wealth for being the Clintons. … This is not like shoveling coal, this is not like building a factory.

Yes, that’s a bit emblematic of the disengaged One Percent, no? Plus, the Washington Post notes who actually pays Bill Clinton the most for his time, too, and it’s not going to make the base any happier:

The financial industry has been Clinton’s most frequent sponsor. The Post review showed that Wall Street banks and other financial services firms have hired Clinton for at least 102 appearances and paid him a total of $19.6 million.

Maybe they can argue that Bill Clinton occupied Wall Street before Occupy was cool … but I doubt it.

Joe Scarborough also pointed to the nearly $20 million Bill Clinton earned from speeches to the financial industry as perhaps the most damaging part of the story for Hillary’s political aspirations:

Maybe, but I think he gets closer to it at the end. “I’m sorry, that is disconnected,” Scarborough concludes, “when you don’t think you’re that rich because the billionaires you hang out with all the time are paying 14% taxes.”

At some point, the Clintons will have to either come up with a better explanation or just shut up about the poverty of seven-figure incomes. Perhaps Bill felt like he had no choice but to attempt to rescue Hillary from the trap she’s created for herself, but now he’s ensnared by it and it’s just giving the media even more reason to scrutinize their class-warfare hypocrisy. And with that attention comes the obvious conclusion that a Democratic Party that supports Hillary Clinton is just demagoguing on income inequality, a conclusion that steps all over the midterm strategy of the Clintons’ colleagues.

Update: At the Daily Beast, Keli Goff outlines the danger for 2016, too:

Now, two decades, later the Clintons find themselves confronting the same problem. And just like former President Bush, the problem will only be amplified should Hillary find herself facing a contender who, like her husband 20 years ago, is more representative of America’s little guy.

Though in recent years the GOP nominees have been scions of privilege (think Bush, McCain and Romney) the current GOP lineup has more middle- and working-class bona fides. Chris Christie, Scott Walker, Bobby Jindal, Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio all come from backgrounds that make it likely they know how to operate a grocery store scanner. They also come from backgrounds in which the meaning of “dead broke” probably has a very different meaning for them than it appears to for the former secretary of state, especially since unlike her they are all still relying on government salaries.

That’s an aspect that hadn’t occurred to me, but which makes a very good point … unless Jeb Bush wins the nomination.

They’re getting it out of their system early.

When the election for 2016 gets into full tilt the media will have a Republican to target and the Republican will become the totem of inequality, bigotry, privilege etc.

JugEarsButtHurt on June 27, 2014 at 12:09 PM

There is a reason why the Clintons keep bringing this up. They want to remind the Obamas that as rich as they will get when (if) they leave the White House, they WILL feel “poor” compared to the $1.4 BILLION A YEAR that is being spent on them right now.

And it’s a thumb in the eye also telling the Obamas that the Clintons intend to be back in there living it up while Barry has to spend some of his own stash on his vacays, golf, etc and not just hiding his college records…

Hildabeast is just awful at pulling off a subtle jab unlike her husband.

Even Bill, with his so-called expertise in campaigning, is going to learn that it’s impossible to put the toothpaste back into the tube on this issue.

It was a huge gaffe by Hillary, particularly with the class warfare / income equality meme that was projected as being front-center for the 2016 campaign. It proves that she is as bad of a candidate as Bill was a good campaigner – lacking the sense, empathy, and instincts of her husband.

The Washington Post today dissected Bill Clinton’s income in a manner which will hardly look attractive to the Democratic base that fulminates over the One Percent:

Really? Here’s the very first WaPo comment I encountered:

Don’t you guys get it? You cannot fault someone for being smart and successful. The issue is not that the Clintons are rich; the question is what they do with that money. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are super rich, but they earned their money honestly and they do a lot of good with their billions. They don’t spend excessively (especially Buffett) and they are capable of thinking of more than just themselves. They are bettering the world both socially and politically. Then think of how Romney started out rich and got even richer as a corporate raider, breaking up companies where honest people worked. Think of all the evil the Koch brothers do with their billions; manipulating politicians to make it easier for big business to destroy the environment; doing everything they can to trample on the civil rights of blacks, gays, women etc.

How can conservatives espouse the benefits of capitalism, and then knock the Clintons for making something of themselves?

More:

This stuff will all blow over soon when republicans find something new to complain about. Hillary needs to hire some slick media people and handlers to keep her out of these issues.

the clintons have a couple of hundred million from books and speeches—what’s the big deal? fatcat republican billionaires make a $50 million a day from hedge fund profits and only pay tax at 15% by loopholes in the tax law for rich people. I’m tired of this—Hillary will win big in 2016 and settle the score!

You have to remember the Clinton’s were not millionaires when Bill was elected as President. They had two huge legal battles to fight while they were in the White House, Whitewater and the Monica Lewinsky impeachment trial which put a huge strain on thier personal finances.. Both of these legal actions were instigated by the Republican Congress in hopes of getting rid of President Clinton,. They stop at nothinjg to get duly elected Democrats out of office. They got away with wasting millions of our tax dollars. Presidents make a measly salary compared to the millions made by top CEOs of some private companies.

The Clintons are 90% more conservative than Obama. If she wins it will be no big deal.

This one elicited this reply:

Castro is more conservative than Obama.

And finally, someone checks in from Planet Earth:

She came from a solidly suburban upper-middle-class home, glided into elite schools, became a lawyer, married a politician who quickly rose, enjoyed all the many perks of a governor’s mansion and then the White House, and then all the perks of a senator, secretary of state and former first lady.

She’s been driven in limousines and official cars almost all her adult life. For more than a quarter-century she has seen America through tinted windows.

Del Dolemonte on June 27, 2014 at 12:18 PM

Well, to be fair, Bill and Hillary have made over $150MILLION for um, you know… Doing their civil service….. But, they’ve spent nearly half of it on political kickbacks and bribes to maintain their position of relevance in American politics.mso you see, they really are dead broke by the standards of the people whom they hang out with and try to emulate.

It’s not a lie if you believe it.

You’ve got to admire in some respect the devotion and blinding stupidity of the common lefty foot soldier.

Romney was an evil corporate raider because of Bain. Of course Obama bringing in former Bain execs into his administration is of no concern.

And Warren Buffet – the guy who argues for a tax increase he wouldn’t have to pay and would drive the wealthy into tax shelters he offers – is a hero.

And those evil Koch bros – who have sunk vast wealth into hospitals and the arts and also support gay marriage – are out to destroy the environment and strip minorities of their “rights”.

It’s sad really.

The problem for Hillary right now is that last comment on the list could have come from the right or the left (I’m assuming the right, because it has no cursing or oh-so-witty mentions of Rethuglicans or Faux News in it), because as of now, she’s vulnerable on both sides.

I don’t really think the Clintons care if the right’s mad at them over how they amassed their wealth while at the same time claiming poverty — they know in the long run of the 2016 election cycle, the big media’s got their back on that one, and will be more excited in the end over making a major example of, say, Ted Cruz buying something at Nieman’s instead of Target showing he’s out of touch with regular voters. But they do care if the left’s attacking them over it, because they know in that case, as long as there’s a possibility of someone doing to Hillary in 2016 what Obama did in 2008, the big media will take those class warfare charges seriously, because while they prefer the Clintons to any Republican, they’d really like a candidate more in the Liz Warren mode, who in their eyes won’t fold for political purposes like Bill did in 1996.

Couple him with the Santo now Rubio message, and the Dems have no prayer but identity politics.

The Democrats have had little other than identity politics since LBJ….

I routinely make my chauffeur hang tomato vines, he doesn’t like it but a bullwhip is amazingly effective at inducing cooperation.

Bishop on June 27, 2014 at 1:11 PM

That gibberish is him speaking Austrian ya big meanie! The bullwhip is a good idea though, I think I’ll try it out today.

VegasRick on June 27, 2014 at 1:22 PM

I like the approach the University of Nevada students are taking towards the Clintoons.

Killary seeks to score $225,000 loot from skool administration cronies for yammering…

… and those students keep seeing big increases in their tuition.

So if the Clintoons want to see poor she should consider the students and parents further robbed by her parasitic speaking fees.

The cattle prod gets ‘em into action much more efficiently – plus, no blood to clean up.

Del Dolemonte on June 27, 2014 at 1:26 PM

Bishop needs to use a cattle prod instead of a whip.

It’s easier on the shoulder and the chauffeur will only waste energy on a few expletives instead of lengthy sentences.

viking01 on June 27, 2014 at 1:27 PM

Actually found a brilliant comment from Planet Earth in another Washington Com-Post story about this very same topic:

The problem that the Clintons have is that their accumulated wealth is the exclusive result of unproductive work. The kind of wealth that the Left has railed against for generations. There is not a product or service, not a single job, produced by the Clintons. They essentially show up, give a speech written by someone else, and cash the check.

Would one of our resident Leftists care to refute this?

Its no problem, yet. No one cares, yet. Only those obsessed with politics are paying attention right now. I have over 5k friends on facebook, 17k on instagram and 2k on twitter. You know what I see people talking about? The world cup, the nba draft, seahawks, kermit the frog, the jayz and beyonce concert, etc etc…I dont see anyone wringing theyre hands over Hillary on my TL. I mean I get why you think its lighting the world on fire, you watch all the political talk shows, all your friends are in politics, youre rrally into politics, etc but this news isnt penetrating outside of that political bubble right now.

DiggzDime is my social media name. Feel free to follow me on all those aforementioned sites!

Politricks on June 27, 2014 at 12:11 PM

And this is what passes for “real” life these days. People who care about others who are virtual fictions to them, having no real impact on each others’ lives.

Meanwhile, who gives a damn about the people who are orchestrating politics in such a way as to limit our real life.

Honestly, social media is loved by people like the Clintons. The more people are addicted to social media, the less they care about what’s stripped of them in their real lives. The “drug” is all they care about. Obama knows this all too well.

@Del Dolemonte

I work for a place that hires speakers. While I agree with your pointing out their hypocrisy, I must remind you that trickle down economics is very real. While the speaking fees are totally absurd we have to hire many different service individuals to go along with the speaking engagement. My point is that others do benefit from these speaking engagements. But I agree, if they truly give a damn about the hoi polloi, they’d speak for far less money. Just thought I’d mention it.

I would also argue that speaking actually is a service. How else could it be categorized?

TexasJack on June 27, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Clintons: It depends on what the meaning of the word “rich” is.

But ah feel yo pain. Ah really do.

One more thing. I’m not a leftist, I’m as conservative as they come. It’s just that the comment you copied is economically ignorant. I mean working for a place that hires speakers and seeing as how it’s part of my job to pamper these people, they keep me employed too.

I’ll shut up now.

Here’s another view, from rockmom on the HA Headlines thread:

Seeveral years ago I attended a national convention of a major industry association. They were thrilled to have Bill Clinton as the featured speaker. It was a heavily attended convention with a totally packed house in a huge ballroom for Clinton’s speech.

It may have been the single most boring speech I have ever heard. I honestly cannot remember a thing he said.

Anyone in that article who said Clinton was riveting and well worth the money is lying.

formwiz on June 27, 2014 at 3:55 PM

Anybody remember that clip when Hillary was dead tired and lounging in some chair in one of those African nations. Some reporter there asked her how it was something to be married to the past president. She blew up and said “I am the Secretary of State and my husband is not”,,, I am not sure if I have the right words but it went something like that.

I’m not talking about the substance of the speeches that Clinton gives. Frankly I could care less what he says. I’m just making the point that he’s not the “only” person benefiting from his speeches. Many others are too. Like dogs eating the crumbs from the master’s table.

Probably a bad analogy, but the only one I could think of.

TexasJack on June 27, 2014 at 4:40 PM

@Del Delmonte

Maybe I’m wrong. After thinking it over more my question becomes this, does the business I work for create the work for other individuals by hiring speakers or does the speaker create the work for all players involved?

Any thoughts? Steve Eggleston, looking at you? You seem to have a penchant for economics and numbers.

TexasJack on June 27, 2014 at 5:28 PM

So back to this post’s original point. Can Clinton claim that at least he’s helping create wealth with his speaking engagements? He certainly didn’t steal his $100 mill. Right?

TexasJack on June 27, 2014 at 5:40 PM

Over seven frenetic days, Bill Clinton addressed corporate executives in Switzerland and Denmark, an investors’ group in Sweden and a cluster ofbusiness and political leaders in Austria. The former president wrapped up his European trip in the triumphant Spanish Hall at Prague Castle, where he shared his thoughts on energy to a Czech business summit.

His pay: $1.4 million.

The next thing Bill Clinton will tell us is about how WE have to cut back our miserly energy usage as he criss-crosses the world again and again in pursuit of evil profit.

RJL on June 27, 2014 at 11:02 PM

Watch the second video. Mika looks like she’s ready to cry as the others laugh at the Clinton’s claims of poverty.
