It’s that bad: Even Al Franken won’t be seen with Obama

posted at 10:41 am on June 27, 2014 by Noah Rothman

With Republicans in Washington thus far successfully fending off insurgent tea party challengers in competitive races, odds makers are now indicating that the GOP has a better than even chance of retaking the upper chamber of Congress in November.

President Barack Obama’s sinking job approval rating is not helping boost Democrats’ chances. Speaking anonymously to The Hill, one Democratic Senator said Obama’s “unpopularity” is troubling. “It’s a tense time,” the source said.

It is with this backdrop that Obama descended on Minnesota on Thursday where freshman Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) is seeking reelection. Franken has spent the last six years maintaining as low a profile in Washington as possible, shying away from national press and casting himself as a lawmaker exclusively focused on the interests of his constituents.

Obama won Minnesota by 10 points in 2008 and 8 points in 2012. With one exception, no public opinion survey has shown Franken leading his likely GOP opponent, businessman Mike McFadden, by less than 10 points in over a year. Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight indicates that Franken has a 90 percent chance of being reelected in the decidedly blue North Star State.

And yet, Franken in taking no chances. On Friday, CNN reported that the comedian-turned-politician is avoiding being caught on camera in proximity with the Democratic President of the United States.

CNN anchor John King reported on Friday that both Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Franken cancelled a scheduled appearance with Obama and a flight on Air Force One. He noted that both Senators intend to be in Minnesota, but appear to be going out of their way to avoid Obama.

“Is the president that toxic?” King asked his panel. “Are they that worried about Minnesota that they’re trying to over-manage this?”

The Washington Post’s Jackie Kucinich supposed that Franken was merely trying to cover his bases. “He doesn’t want to cozy up to the president and then pay for it later,” she said.

“It’s the bluest of blue states,” King marveled. “If Al Franken will not stand next to President Obama in this election year, it tells you everything you need to know about Arkansas, Alaska, North Carolina.”

Franken spokesman Ed Shelleby said on Thursday that the senator had to cancel a flight on the presidential airplane and a joint town hall in order to cast a vote to confirm new ambassador to Iraq. Shelleby added, however, that the senator expects to be in Minnesota today to attend an economic policy speech by the president.

Franken got elected here because he has a “D” next to his name, he could have stomped on kittens at his first acceptance speech and the lefties would still gush over the man.

There would be no price to pay for appearing with Dog Eater because this state is packed with liberals who get excited about semi-celebrity.

The “Champion of Global Warming change” will fly into Minnesota to get ice cream? This shows the hypocrisy of the green zealots, who want to tell others they have to cut back while they create more CO2. I guess this is what is meant by the carbon tax – penalize companies so greenies can fly more and use more electricity.

Figures:

The family of a North Carolina man who was shot and killed while committing an armed robbery is calling for stricter gun laws.

Dante Williams, 19, and his accomplice Jawan Craig walked into the Waffle House restaurant and “terrorized” the customers in 2012 intent on robbing it at gun point. Upon being approached by Williams, gun in hand, one of the patrons, Justin Harrison – who also had a concealed weapon on him but had an actual permit for it – shot Williams in self-defense, killing him “almost instantly,” according to a Fox News affiliate in North Carolina. Fox only recently acquired the video footage from the 2012 incident.

Craig tried wrestling the gun away from Harrison but couldn’t and fled the scene. He was later apprehended and sentenced to 30 years in prison for participating in the robbery.

Williams’s cousin Tamika McSwain is saying that although what he did was wrong, he shouldn’t have died and is calling for stricter gun laws. In the video, she specifically cites Harrison in her argument, asserting that tougher regulations for the acquirement of concealed weapon permits may have prevented her cousin’s death.

McSwain said her cousin obtained the gun through the crowd the teen hung out with – “the wrong crowd,” she said, while noting that she believes more training is needed for CWP carriers, specifically Harrison.

Harrison, however, says he did what he had to do. David Blanton, who was Harrison’s CWP instructor, reviewed the video and said Harrison followed his training and was justified in firing, notes Fox.

If it happens, if they pass new Constitutional guidelines and restraints – the same people who are violating the current Constitution will violate any of the new crap as well. Bishop on June 27, 2014 at 10:53 AM

In case anyone is still reading and/or commenting on this article … I’m convinced that Franken won because there was cheating in the 2008 election. I was witness to it. In my precinct they were handing out registration forms on election day like they were going out of style. In 2012, they handed three or four forms to one person who then took them to the back of the LONG line and handed them to two or three other people. If I had money right now, I’d bet that most of those people were pro-union and probably from another state.

By the way, I was laid off at the beginning of May from a local hospital … the one that had the mud slide behind it … and I attribute this directly to Obamacrap.
