Terror warning: Syria fighters with U.S. passports and non-metallic bombs bound for America?

posted at 4:01 pm on June 25, 2014 by Noah Rothman

A particularly disturbing report which aired on ABC News on Tuesday night indicated that fighters in Syria and Yemen are arming themselves with non-metallic explosive devices which could evade detection. Those fighters, many of whom are Western and may even have access to American passports, may be preparing attacks on the United States.

Via American Power Blog:

“One official now calls Syria the new university for terrorism training and bomb making,” ABC correspondent Pierre Thomas reported. “The fear among intelligence officials is that one of the thousands of foreign fighters in Syria, many of them from Western countries, could try to smuggle one of these new generation bombs onto a plane headed for Europe or the U.S.”

Meanwhile, U.S. officials revealed that there is evidence that Syria has begun to conduct airstrikes inside Iraq on Tuesday in an effort to stem the advance of ISIS fighters.

“Officials said the strikes appeared to be the work of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government, which is locked in a bloody civil war with opposition groups,” the Associated Press reported. “The target of the attacks was the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which has been fighting along with the rebels opposed to Assad and has since moved swiftly across the border into Iraq.”

The failure by the West to contain the Syrian civil war in Syria is rapidly putting the United States on the same side of the struggle against Islamist fighters in the Levant as a brutal dictator who gassed his own people. What a delightful turn of events.

All they gotta do is show up at our southern border. King Barack will furnish transportation inside the US.

Unlike the national unity in the wake of 9/11 an event of this sort will bring down the Federal government. It’s only a matter of how.

At this point, what difference does it make.

My thoughts exactly when I first saw this.

Obama! Obama! Obama!

He’s only got a couple more years to bring the west to its knees…and then blame it on some one else…and 41% of Americans will still approve of his job performance.

Obama! Obama! Obama!

But McCain said they were freedom fighters.

Look this is not a fight them over there so they don’t fight us here problem, but instead this this a stop letting jihadist become American citizens problem.

This gets me to the biggest ludicracy of those that want heavy U.S. intervention in Syria and Iraq. They say…”look they are making bombs and they will return to kill Americans”, yet they never ask a fundamentally important question…”How did these guys get American passports in the first place, or how did they become American citizens?”

It is strange paradox. We always end up fighting them over there, yet many of them then come back with our troops to become U.S. citizens. So the very act of us fighting them there ends up bring them home to fight us in America.

This is not a isolationist argument, this is simply pointing out that some of the biggest neo-con hawks in this country tend in large to be the biggest supporters of more immigration and amnesty.

I was a long haul truck driver for 12 years and have given this some thought.
I95 from Boston, Mas to Richmond, Va is one big clusterfark every day. Just imagine the fun 10-15 well coordinated and rebellious youths with boom boxes could have.
Good bye GW, Woodrow Wilson and other bridges. Buh bye Baltimore tunnel. So long I95/495 connector in VA. Hello Arlington and Quantico. So long DC metro rail.
All this and never touching metro DC.
It would snarl traffic and stay in the news for years as each bridge, tunnel and affected road was repaired/replaced.

Johnny Jihad doesn’t need a large body count, just as many headlines as possible.

Just my 2 cents.

You are correct. They don’t need a large body count for an effective course of action. However they want one because that gives them more credibility amongst their own. Causing damage to the transportation system, no matter how devastating, just wouldn’t have the same effect even if it eventually resulted in a larger loss of life. Killing a lot of people all at once is a much more spectacular event in their minds.

They wouldn’t be doing this is if Reagan were president.

How far we have fallen.

Neutron bombs should go a long way towards solving this.

Instead we get pound signs/hashtags/whatever they are called nowadays.

Well we did elect a muslim Kenyan village idiot . . . . .

Kinda like WWI where we were allies with Japan.
Kinda like WWII where we were allies with Stalin and the USSR.

‘Decisions’? Meet ‘Consequences’.
Heckuva job, Barry—or, as he might alternatively be titled: “Brave Sir Robin”.

Mr Obama would make the Byzantine Empire proud. They, too had insulated, out-of-touch, ineffective leaders surrounded by carefully chosen sycophants, and rather than engaging their adversaries in a definitive fashion, typically chose to either buy them off or engage them in tepid, one-shot engagements. Which spectacularly failed over a course of centuries.
Which is why you don’t find “Byzantium” on the map anymore. Nor, Constantinople—although you WILL find ‘Istanbul’, ‘Turkey’, and sundry other Islamic states.

Good luck finding ‘United States of America’ on the map, in 2114.

Teh Al-Q destroyed the power grid of Yemen the other day. Nobody seemed to notice that much. Odd attacks and probes on Americas power grid have been happening for a few years. A thousand strategically placed grievanced Muslim/american youts could black out the nation very quickly without needing a nuke in the atmosphere.

I agree that JJ desires a large casualty rate in a single event. JJ’s leaders want that big ole orgasm producing single event.
But somewhere along the line JJ gets a boss who thinks bigger and more strategically: loss of life combined with devastating infrastructure damage. It’s a win win for Johnny and his bosses.

Think of it as the inevitable next step in the evolution of guerilla warfare.

We really need to take some lessons from the Israelis. They’ve kept Hamas to a low intensity level of warfare for how long now?

Level 2 IS coming.
Just a matter of time.

Just my two cents.

One need look no further than Rudyard Kipling to see our biggest problem.

” East is East, West is West and ne’er the twain shall meet.”
(apologies to Kipling)

The average American never thinks more than one year ahead. Actually, too many think month to month.

The Arab thinks in terms of decades and centuries.
It’s just a matter of keeping the heat turned as high as possible until the war weary west gives up.
It worked for the north in Vietnam, it will work for the Arab even more so when he is causing trouble here.

How much more proof does one need to see that the Administrations Foreign Polices will never do a thing to protect U.S. from Terrorism. Also, that the Presidents proven sympathies for Islamic beliefs further weaken U.S.

Well why not. The enemy is White Christians now – as it was during WJ Clinton. Something of ours should be blowing up any minute.
