Gallup, CBS/NYT poll show Obama approval heading toward historic lows

posted at 2:41 pm on June 25, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

With the rest of the bad news this week, we’ve missed its impact on the electorate to some extent. Two new national polls this week show Barack Obama’s approval rating sliding back toward historic lows, and the economic news this week might make it even more difficult to reverse the trend. Yesterday, Gallup reported that Obama’s weekly approval rating had skidded to its lowest point in a quarter, coming close to a personal low for his presidency:

The situation in Iraq seems to be taking a toll on President Barack Obama’s public standing. His weekly job approval rating is down a total of three percentage points over the last two weeks, to 41%. While this drop is not large in absolute terms, it is notable because it follows nearly three months in which his job approval averaged 44% with little week-to-week variation.

The long stretch of stability from mid-March to early June occurred during a period that was hardly uneventful for the president, including controversies over medical care for U.S. military veterans at Veterans Affairs hospitals and a prisoner exchange of five Taliban detainees for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. But Iraq may be the issue weighing most heavily on Obama’s public support given the timing of the drop in approval.

Obama’s approval rating in Gallup Daily tracking first showed signs of decline (from the mid- to the low 40s) in the immediate days after Islamic militants took control of Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq, on June 10. The Gallup Daily tracking three-day average for June 11-13, based on fully post-Mosul interviewing, was 41%, and Obama’s approval rating has been either 40% or 41% in each subsequent measurement up through June 22 interviewing.

Left unmentioned by Gallup in the lead is that Obama’s disapproval has risen to 53%. Most of the damage in this poll takes place with Democrats and independents. It’s no great surprise to see Obama get a 76% approval rating in his own party, but that’s down from 80% and shows some dimming of enthusiasm. Among independents, Obama has dropped to a 35% approval rating, a very problematic result for Democrats facing a tough midterm election with Republican enthusiasm ascendant.

In fact, Gallup points out that the only lower midterm cycle rating in its history was George W. Bush’s 38% approval at the time of the 2006 election. That turned into a wave election for Democrats, who seized control of the Senate and House, and who have held the Senate ever since — a streak that is very much in jeopardy this November.

Yesterday’s CBS/NYT poll also shows Obama plumbing the depths of his popularity. His overall approval rating is 40/54, slightly lower than Gallup’s, and second-lowest in the entire series (November 2013′s 37/57 was the nadir in the wake of the ObamaCare rollout disaster).  But that’s still better than Obama gets in policy areas:

  • Foreign policy: 36/58, worst ever and first majority disapproval ever
  • Economy: 41/54
  • Iraq: 37/52 (Allahpundit covered this in the separate CBS/NYT release)

Perhaps even more telling, the percentage of people who believe Obama has made America less safe from terrorism has hit its highest level ever, 36%, an eight-point increase from last year. It’s the first time that the “less-safe” figure has outstripped the “safer” result, 29%, which is a drop of seven points from 2013 and 2011.

After this week’s GDP revision, it will be interesting to see how that will impact Obama’s approval levels in both polling series. His RCP average for June across all national polls is 41/54, very close to both Gallup and CBS/NYT, but at the rate things are going for this White House, it won’t bounce back any time soon.

Same as it always is on this topic…polls schmolls.
They’ve always been given selective credence at HA…but both bloggers and commenters.

Obama’s got a term to finish…whether he’s polling well or not.
And that because he won the (as Ed calls it) ‘only poll that matters’.
And if at the end of that term the citizens want to send a huge message of disapproval by electing a slate of Tea Party candidates and Social con Repubs…so be it.
But I’d caution about making any big bets based on current ‘approval ratings’.
That’d make you a certified fool.

I have said repeatedly since 2010 that his plan is to destroy our nation from within. He plans to aggravate and divide us along every possible metric.. Political, racial, moral, cultural, religious, economic, educational, geographical…you name it..

When we have finally reached our pinnacle of rage, the people will engage in massive unrest.. we will fight one another and we will fight with our government. Obama will then declare martial law, order the confiscation of all guns and the arrest of all dissidents. He will cancel the 2016 election, using the civil unrest and martial law as his excuse. He will declare himself president for an indefinite period of time.

And no one will do a damned thing about it, verbaldouche..because 47% of y’all are on the gubbermunt cheese, many more are too busy to pay attention, and the rest of us lack the courage of our convictions to demand his ouster.

Welcome to Barack’s version of Venezuela, verby.

According to a recently published briefing book “obtained by Politico” by the liberal megadonor group Democracy Alliance, “progressives’ long term success hinges on our ability to fundamentally change our current political system – including large questions about who can vote, the role money should play in politics, and what our courts look like.

Comfortably numb.

Where exactly would you go to vent your rage? In front of your local PD or courthouse? In the first place, good luck with that-most of the local Boss Hoggs won’t put up with that and you’ll find yourself in jail. Besides, they aren’t Federal.

OK, then…Local Post Office? Yeah, they’re Federal, that’s the ticket. No?

And if you were in or near a major city, what makes you think you’ll be allowed within a block of any Federal building?

How about D.C.? Yeah, right. Even if they don’t cordon off the entire area (more than they’ve already done since 9-11) those you’re protesting against will probably be elsewhere-and you won’t even know it.

So, you’re left with standing in a field somewhere holding your Gadsen Flags and homemade protest signs…and the press won’t bother reporting it…and your GOP elected officials won’t come…

The only loud, violent protests are the ones that the ruling class (DNC in particular) OKs, like, against Nixon, Reagan or Boooosh. They really don’t like the IMF protesters, but they’ll put up with those much more than they would with any Constitutionalist, “tea bagger” types who they despise the most.

verbaluce on June 25, 2014 at 4:30 PM

This has been explained to you repeatedly before – and you always ignore it. You’ll likely do the same again, but here’s the explanation.

Barack Obama, via his parents, his grandparents, his mentors (including Frank Marshall Davis), and as he described in his own book, the ‘marxists, chicanos, and revolutionaries’ at Occidental and Columbia that he chose to ‘hang with’, has been indoctrinated and accepts a certain vision of the United States.

This is a vision that sees the United States as a fundamentally flawed and broken nation. He sees this as a nation that is unjust, unfair, misogynistic, racist, arrogant, greedy, selfish, a bully, and one that is the direct cause of virtually all of the major problems faced throughout the globe.

As a result, he see’s it as his mission to ‘fundamentally change’ and ‘fix’ this country by ensuring and enabling social justice, income equality, equality of results as opposed to equality of opportunity, wealth redistribution, and reducing / changing the footprint of the US across the globe in the name of world order and peace.

Being a sociopath, including a narcissist, he reinforces his own inflated vision of his self-worth and value by achieving this goal of fundamental change – one where he will both enrich himself and savor his ‘victory’ as a modern day savior / messiah. Not unlike the other Rousseau inspired fascists and totalitarians who’ve gone before him, the ends justifies the means, particularly for the Dear Leader.

Obama should thank his lucky stars for the press coverage he’s received. The economy is in the tank, people have given up looking for jobs and he keeps advancing policies that will only make things worse.

Thanks to the MSM, half the country is in the dark about all this stuff. Thanks to the MSM, we’re letting the IRS get away with targeting American citizens for political reasons. Thanks to the MSM, we allowed Mexican citizens to be murdered so this administration could claim it was because of our lax gun control laws. Thanks to the MSM, the representatives of over half the population have been shut out of legislating by an out of control Senate and a President who’s working extra-constitutionally. Thanks to the MSM, we have a health care law few understand, that is helping to tank the economy and the President and his political party lied to sell it and over half the country doesn’t know that.

Translated: “I honestly can’t be bothered in finding out why my Cult Leader was raised to dislike the American system as established, because I’m afraid to!”

We feel your pain, verbie, we really do.

One of the ways O’bama was raised to dislike the American system so much? Consider where he grew up (and no, I don’t mean Indonesia). I know this stuff because I was living there at the exact same time.

In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, Hawai’i was gripped by a movement that demanded that the US return the islands to their rightful owners (the natives). That’s because the Evil White Americans “stole” Hawai’i in the late 1800s. O’bama experienced that movement first-hand as a kid. And given the anti-American views of his mother (and also his grandmother) there is little doubt that one or both of those ladies raised young Barry to believe that the place where he was living was “stolen” by Evil White Men.

The very first group was called ALOHA and was formed in 1969. It demanded reparations from the US government. Sound familiar?

The Democrat Party of Hawai’i, founded much earlier (1900) also had as its primary goal reparations. Last time I checked, O’bama was a Democrat, and that Democrat Party has had a near total stranglehold on Hawai’i since JFK was President.

And another Democrat, Bill Clinton, actually apologized for America in 1993, when he signed an Apology Resolution. That Resolution was overwhelmingly approved by the Democrat House and Democrat Senate, thus confirming that they also wanted to call America Evil. Both of the sponsors in Congress were Democrats from Hawai’i.

That’s the report from here on Planet Earth. You can go back to your own reality now.

bimmcorp on June 25, 2014 at 4:08 PM

Because….why exactly?

verbaluce on June 25, 2014 at 4:11 PM

Simple. This has been the plan since day 1, and it’s coming to fruition pretty soon. Start with Fast and Furious, a naked play to get guns out of the hands of law abiding Americans and into the hands of drug abiding thugs.

Move right along to the Arab Spring, a naked attempt to inflate the abilities of the Muslim Brotherhood Islamofascists. That, along with his refusal to even try to negotiate a Status of Forces agreement in Iraq makes ISIS a sure thing to set up a Caliphate State and amass power. Their goal, of course, is to attack the West, ie the US.

Don’t forget the Benghazi incident, which was nothing more than a cover for arms trading to reinforce ISIS.

Now, all of this reaches it’s denoumont in July-October 2016, when the terrorist rush from the unprotected southern border occurs. They will deliver the biggest October Surprise you’ve ever seen. It will be brutal, and probably nuclear. So brutal that Obarky will have to declare Martial Law. Of course he will be backed up by a fully armed Federal Government, including tanks and automatic weapons with plenty of ammo like DHS and the Post Office have been stockpiling. The peasants will not be able to resist.

As part of the emergency Martial Law, he will simply cancel the Presidential elections until the situation settles down and we are back on our feet….which of course will never happen. And you will all Hail King Barky, benevolent dictator of Post America.

Sorry it was such a quick outline. But I’m sure if you look at just about every action this administration has taken it will nicely fit into this scenario.

petunia on June 25, 2014 at 6:04 PM

They see it as ‘fixing’ the American dream.

They really mean kill – but that’s how they justify it.

The problem with the media is that they now see their role, as one senior AP editor once told me, as ‘changing the world’ and ‘influencing change’ as opposed to the reporting the first draft of history. Since so many embrace the progressive mindset and vision, they see nothing wrong with doing what they can to promote and enable that vision.

The media’s biggest frustration with their target market – the LIV. Their second, being held accountable and responsible for their biases and story selection / determining what is the ‘important news’.

Why do you suppose agencies such as the BLM, OSHA, FEMA, DHSH, SSA, DHS, and most other seemingly innocuous government agencies have purchased billions of rounds of ammo and the weapons from which to discharge them? Why the concentration camp like areas in place? Why the hundreds of thousands of coffins?

Hmmm…but I would think they would have to trigger all that somehow-possibly by cutting off the welfare checks. I’d say the vast majority of minorities would stay at home and watch the riots on TV just like they have done in the past. But even if this involved some thousands raising hell and burning down stuff as in the past, it might be the excuse BHO would need to do what you say.

But how would they explain the trigger? With BHO being the head libtard in charge, how could he blame the GOP? I guess you could say it wouldn’t matter at that point.

Right now I’m going with a slow, steady strangulation along with nibbling away at civil liberties. If (LOL) the economy gets way worse, then more and more Americans would become dependent upon the government.

And the LSM, Hollywood, etc. have successfully painted the TEA Party adherents to be racist nutcases with a picture of Timothy McVeigh hanging on their dining room walls and a copy of the Turner Diaries on our book shelves.

At some point the average American Yuppie with their 2.5 children will gladly turn in any Flag-waving, Patriotic type seeking to rock the boat and thus make life even more uncomfortable for them and their families.

We can be suppressed through the sheer weight of modern America’s collective ignorance and the deep desire to continue living in La La Land where everything is cozy, safe and familiar. Somewhere along the line, the good attitudes of self-reliance and a free market economy where one competes and can become successful has morphed into an “every man for himself” belief. That’s why we couldn’t even get most Conservatives to show up at the rallies.

albill on June 25, 2014 at 7:27 PM

Obama knows he won’t be found guilty, even if he’s impeached. I don’t care what he does, you’re not going to get 67 votes, in the Senate, to convict. The Democrats will pull their usual stuff where they’ll give vulnerable Democrats the option to vote to convict, up until they get to 65 or 66 votes then no more permission will be given, no matter how egregious the crime.

The best the Republicans can hope for is to win so many seats in the House and the Senate that Obama has a hard time vetoing everything. Huge numbers would be a mandate against Obama’s policies and, short of that, there’s a problem.

What the Republicans pulled, in Mississippi, isn’t conducive to electing a huge majority. They think they pulled a fast one there and got away with it. They’re going to find out they won the battle and lost the war. The tea party is for real, it’s a base Republican constituency that the Republicans don’t want so you can bet there’s going to be a 3rd party. However, before then, knowing you’re not wanted by a political party won’t get you off the couch to go out and vote for that party either. Cochran closed that deal.

MrBobSugar on June 26, 2014 at 2:45 AM

As much as I hate agreeing with Verb – he is correct. Do I think Obama committed criminal acts in voter suppression with the help of the IRS and other govt agencies? Most certainly, only the most partisian democrat would argue against that. Was it enough to toally flip the election? I don’t know.

He won, the media will never go out and out and attack him. I have taken this opportunity to increase my wealth and asset holdings because Obama’s administration has been great for the 1% and those who would like to get closer to them. The fact that his election sucked for most people, including a vast majority of people who voted for him is immaterial.

His only success goes in his ability to ram down the throats of people what he wants to do. Otherwise, none of his initiatives have worked. ObamaCare left the same number of people uninsured and drove costs of insurance and care higher (while the downturn in the economy and loss of jobs and their added benefit packages drove overall spending down). His EPA policies are devasting mining and doing everything possible to increase the cost of energy to the detriment of everyone who uses it, all in thrall to a AGW narritive that is void of scientific proof and whose models have utterly failed at predicting anything.

He has driven the labor participation rate to historic lows, his desires in raising the minimum wage have put additional young balck males out of work. His immigration stance will destroy the economic livelihood the lower middle class blue collar worker by bringing in cheap undocumented labor. His economic policies in general have increased wage disparity – only the wealthy have recovered from the recession. The recovery never really was and now is officially flirting with an official recession. Food and energy prices are moving at rates well above the official inflation rate.

He has lost the peace in Iraq (and a great deal of the middle east is in conflict), is getting ready to create the same scenerio in Afghanistan, and has allowed Russia and China to start bullying their neighbors; who once looked to us for protection but now realize Obama is not to be trusted and will not honor old promises. He has alienated eastern Europe and Canada.

He golfs and vacations with impunity and generally seems to feel we are not up to his lofty standards. We are not subjects, but he and his wife (who is really a terrible human being from all Chicago accounts I can find) sure like to treat us that way.

And yes, the country voted for him twice. And the GOPe doesn’t mind that at all. The country is lost. It will slide down slowly, as Britain did. But we will not be replaced, like she was, with a benevolent superpower. We will all pay for the country’s silliness. Verb likes all of this, as do the other libs on the board, because either they are idealistic beyond explanation, or they think they will be in enough good graces with the progressive power elite that the decline won’t hurt them. Both attitudes are incorrect.
