1,000 dead: Report indicates VA scandal is worse than anyone knew

posted at 5:21 pm on June 24, 2014 by Noah Rothman

More than 1,000 veterans have died over the last decade as a result of a failure to provide care or malpractice by the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to the findings of a new report authored by retiring Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK).

The report, “Friendly Fire: Death, Delay, and Dismay at the VA,” complies the findings of a number of government and media investigation and concludes that many more veterans lost their lives as a result of VA negligence than the 23 deaths to which the department has admitted.

“The problems at the VA are worse than anyone imagined,” Coburn said.

“Over the past decade, more than 1,000 veterans may have died as a result of VA malfeasance,” the senator added. “Poor management is costing the department billions of dollars more and compromising veterans’ access to medical care.”

In addition to the wrongful deaths the report attributes to poor practices at the VA, it also indicates that malpractice lawsuits against the VA resulted in $845 million in settlements. $36.4 million of that was used to settle claims involving delayed care.

As The Washington Times indicated, some of the anecdotes of substandard practices at the VA are “downright ghoulish.”

One involves a Philadelphia veteran who went in for a tooth extraction. Doctors went ahead with the procedure despite his dangerously low blood pressure. On his way home from the operation, he had a stroke and was left paralyzed.

Another veteran had annual chest X-rays, but doctors never spotted a growing lesion in his lung. It ultimately killed him.

A veteran in South Carolina had to wait nine months for a colonoscopy. By the time he underwent the procedure, cancer was diagnosed at stage three. In that case, the VA admitted that had he been treated earlier, his case might not have been as severe, Mr. Coburn said.

The report also alleges that the VA routinely performs unnecessary preventative care, cannot process claims in a timely fashion, employs health care providers who have lost their medical licenses, and – as has been widely reported – maintains secret waiting lists in order to create the impression that the department is meeting performance goals set in Washington.

The report further alleges that some VA staff have been implicated in criminal activities, including drug dealing, sexual abuse, attempted kidnapping, theft, and conspiracy. “Earlier this year, one former staffer at the Tampa, Florida, VA was sentenced to six years in federal prison for trading veterans’ personal information for crack cocaine,” CNN reported on Tuesday.

In spite of these failures, VA senior managers are still receiving bonuses.

“At a congressional hearing Friday, Gina Farrisee, the VA assistant secretary for human resources and administration, confirmed that 78% of VA senior managers qualified for extra pay or other compensation in fiscal year 2013, despite ongoing delay and malpractice controversies,” the CNN report continued.

Judging from the contents of Coburn’s report, the controversy involving falsified wait lists at the VA may have been merely the tip of the scandalous iceberg.

I sometimes wonder if Obama wanted killing of potentially healthy Veterans that knew/know the ROE, the Constitution and the limits of Executive Power.

This is an issue that Obama ran on. His wife was trotted out as an advocate for Veterans along with “Doctor” Jill Biden. Where are they now?

Boehner Planning House Lawsuit Against Obama Executive Actions

By Daniel Newhauser Posted at 5:11 p.m. June 24
****************************************************

Speaker John A. Boehner told Republicans Tuesday he could have an announcement within days on whether the House will file a lawsuit against President Barack Obama, challenging the executive actions that have become the keystone of the administration.

The lawsuit could set up a significant test of constitutional checks and balances, with the legislative branch suing the executive branch for ignoring its mandates, and the judiciary branch deciding the outcome.

They have argued that short of impeachment, there is no other check to the president’s issuance of executive actions.

If stuff like this keeps up, how many think the military would have Obama’s back, if things went bad in this country?

The military wouldn’t have his back now, if it came to a test. There are few things that give me more joy than pointing out to Democrats that just because their guy is squatting in the oval office, it doesn’t mean the military is his to command against all enemies. The US military will never operate on American soil. Being ordered to do so would be an unlawful order. And if Democrats ever want to push the issue, and force the military to pick a side, they’re not going to like the answer.

One of the happiest days in my life–speaking as a vet–was the day I got to tell a liberal to his face, “dude, we HATE you. We in the military despise liberals and Democrats. We will never vote for you. If you want to be stupid and pull the trigger, you’re going to be looking at us on the other side of the battlefield.” There are individual exceptions, but right now, as an institution, the military would happily spit in most Democrats’ faces. INCLUDING the so-called “Commander in Chief” in the White House.

Obamacare is going to be AWESOME!

And just a conservative guess, this is 1000 X at least 10. Just give it a few weeks or so and they will start “revising” numbers. So when it’s 5,000, it won’t seem SO bad because we already knew about 1000 of them, and then we wait until the next revision.

Just like Lerner’s emails. First it was her computer. Then a week later, oh, wait… it was hers plus SIX others. Mark my words, 1000 is NOT the final tally by any stretch of the imagination.

The document bears the signature of the Acting Qatari Embassy in Libya, Nayef Abdullah Al Emadi, in which he wrote that “the volunteers completed military and combat training with heavy weapons, especially in the camps Zintan, Benghazi, Zawiya and Misrata in Libya” suggesting to send these fighters in three batches over the Libyan ports to Turkey, and then to enter northern Iraq through Kurdistan.

Court orders US to pay conservative group $50K
Jun. 24, 2014 6:02 PM EDT
**************************

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal court has ordered the U.S. government to pay $50,000 to a conservative group that says confidential information from its tax returns about its donors was published on the website of a political opponent.

The board chairman of the National Organization for Marriage said Tuesday that his group still wants to learn more about how the information from a 2008 tax form emerged from the IRS.

John Eastman’s group opposes same-sex marriage. The information about his organization’s donors ended up being published in 2012 by the Human Rights Campaign, which supports gay rights.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia issued a consent judgment dated Monday ordering the U.S. to pay the $50,000.

IRS spokesman Bruce Friedland says privacy law prevents his agency from commenting.

I don’t think that will be the case at all. They can spin in the short term however they want. The fact is though, we’re going to be digging out of the Obama Regime’s crater for decades, IF we ever get out at all. You can’t spin the destruction of the nation, which is what we’re facing.

You come in really sick? They stick you on a morphine pump. That’s how they do it.

I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be a bummer but every time I see what was plain in my face while I was facing this issue just makes me angry. I will never sue but I do want justice.

/But I’m just a skinny white girl so I got nothing coming to me. Not that I care. I just wish they would have refrained from killing my 44 year old husband.

My sincere condolences.

Unfortunately, the VA system is what the progressive-fascists envision as the future of healthcare for this nation….rationed care, minimal care defined by cost containment, and the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few or the one.

Up until this year, I wasn’t thrilled with the HMO that provided my medical attention. But since being diagnosed with colon cancer and having it spread to my lymph nodes about 2 months ago – I’ve got few complaints with this HMO, and I’m happier than hell that I’m not under the Canadian system (I’m a dual US / Canadian citizen) or Obamacare coverages.

It’s a damn shame that our vets are the one’s who have to exist under this country’s single payer system where bureaucrats care more about their bonuses than delivering service to those who signed up to give all to this country.

Breitbart did a story this past May on the great health care given to Gitmo detainees. 100′s of doctors and nurses, cancer screenings (?) and no wait times.

Makes me want to vomit.

You have every right to sue, ya’ know…

OmahaConservative on June 24, 2014 at 5:45 PM

Yes. A civil suit might not be criminal justice, but when it’s the closest you can come you should take it. All 1,000 should.

Valerie Jarret – “After We Win This Election, It’s Our Turn. Payback Time.”
**************
**************

After we win this election, it’s our turn. Payback time. Everyone not with us
is against us and they better be ready because we don’t forget.

The ones who
helped us will be rewarded, the ones who opposed us will get what they deserve.

There is going to be hell to pay.

Congress won’t be a problem for us
this time.

No election to worry about after this is over and we have two judges
ready to go.”
