Politico: The vast liberal billionaire conspiracy is for real

posted at 10:01 am on June 23, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

If you think that only Republicans have deep-pocket donors for PACS, your name is increasingly likely to be Harry Reid. Everyone else seems to have figured out that Tom Steyer, George Soros, and plenty of other One Percenters cough up big bucks for progressive candidates and causes, just as the Koch Brothers do for libertarian and free-market causes. Last week, Yahoo’s Matt Bai made it explicit, looking at the inner workings and financing of the Democracy Alliance and its “superrich Democrats.” Today, Politico’s Ken Vogel catches up:

Picture this: millionaires and billionaires gathering under tight security in fancy hotels with powerful politicians and operatives to plot how their network of secret-money groups can engineer a permanent realignment of American politics.

Only, it’s not the Koch brothers. It’s the liberal Democracy Alliance.

The 21 groups at the core of the Democracy Alliance’s portfolio intend to spend $374 million during the midterm election cycle — including nearly $200 million this year — to boost liberal candidates and causes in 2014 and beyond, according to internal documents obtained by POLITICO.

Vogel emphasizes throughout the piece that the Koch Brothers are in a class by themselves when it comes to fundraising, but that’s only because they’re more adept at it. Progressives pillory the Kochs for their use of money in politics and its supposedly corrupting influence, but Vogel’s report shows that progressives are perhaps more adept at corruption and influence-peddling:

But the DA document distributed in Chicago does call into question some of the plaintiff [I believe he meant “plaintive” — Edwoe-is-us rhetoric bandied about by Democrats griping about the Koch brothers’ sophisticated efforts to use their checkbooks to manipulate American democracy.

Even though the DA’s cash projections pale in comparison to the Koch network, which is in a financial class by itself and rivals the official parties’ spending, they exceed those of most other outside spending operations on the right and left. And, perhaps more significantly, the briefing highlights what liberals believe is superior coordination between its deep-pocketed labor unions, outside groups and even the administration of President Barack Obama that has allowed their side to spend its big money more efficiently than conservatives.

In other words, while Democrats like Harry Reid shriek about the corrupting influence of conservative money in politics, it’s the deep-pocketed One Percenters on Reid’s side that actually has more corrupt influence on government. That makes Reid’s behavior on the Senate floor look less like principled populism (to the microscopic extent that it looks like that anyway) and a lot more like projection.

Don’t think that the Democracy Alliance doesn’t know this, either. They attempted to keep reporters from discovering this coordination at their recent Chicago meeting, Vogel reports, in part by passing around pictures of journalists that board members needed to avoid in case they crashed the party. They reminded DA officials not to reveal the names of their members, in order to provide “a comfortable environment for our partners.” Perhaps if they had not engaged in the grossly hypocritical Kochsteria and encouraged it with Reid and other Democrats, their meeting and their membership wouldn’t have been all that newsworthy in the first place.

But how many of those billionaires are actually “comforatably well-off” and how many are like the Clintons who apparently are paupers despite the millions the rake in “speaking” or through faux jobs that pay over half-a-million a year for their stupid child?

redguy on June 23, 2014 at 10:18 AM

Those billionaires will switch sides if the pendulum swings back to R after the next election. Buying the votes of congressmen is what it’s all about for them. They’d even denounce agw if they saw a dime going in their pockets.

I’ve not seen any evidence of this. Has anyone else? I admit I’d love it if its true, but is it true?

If you want to know what crimes the left is perpetrating…just listen to what they are accusing conservatives of….they’ve always done this.

I think it’s important that you’ve included labor unions in the article. They are without a doubt HUGE contributors to the demmies. If it isn’t in dollars, it’s in how they coerce their membership. Especially in things they shouldn’t be supporting, like the UMW does.

COgirl on June 23, 2014 at 10:23 AM

Yes, I think the more politically astute voters out there have known this for a long time, but the point of all these floor speeches from Reid is to keep banging that drum for the low information voters.

If all you hear is that the GOP is all millionaires and billionaires. What are you going to believe? The only people talking about the progressive billionaires are on talk radio, the targets of these attacks don’t listen to conservative talk radio.

Saw the articles this morning about Hillary not being “truly well off” These comments to me, show her as being so much more out of touch, and so much worse than those Romney comments that were recorded. His point was legitimate, there is a percentage of people who aren’t voting for us no matter what, because it’s in their short term interest to keep the govt. handouts coming. Hillary is just completely out of touch with her core constituency, and it’s in the interest of the Hillary for President crowd to keep this under wraps.

It doesn’t matter, though, every day I am more and more convinced she’s not running. She’s having a good old time now, fueling speculation, but she’s out. Too tainted by working for Obama, health problems, whatever. Taking the Secretary of State gig was a huge tactical blunder for her. She should have stayed in the Senate.

A good point, and this always makes me chuckle when libererals raid on citizens united. It helped democrats way more than republicans.

were can we find the names of these groups and the people that run them?

billofrights on June 23, 2014 at 10:25 AM

Also Politico says the “Koch network” directed $400 million is spending last cycle, while the comparable leftist groups (unions and Democracy Alliance) spent more than $500 million. That’s dwarfed by the two major parties, each of whom raised and spent nearly $2 billion in the 2012 cycle, but still a lot of money.

Why do the Democrats complain when they raise and spend more money than Republicans? Why do they want to control political speech? Is it that they love totalitarian government?

MTF on June 23, 2014 at 10:33 AM

I was hoping that the public was ignoring Harry but I notice that the Koch brothers have felt the need to advertise their holding and job building history.

Cindy Munford on June 23, 2014 at 10:36 AM

It’s good that unions as donors are included in this article, BUT, there’s an amplified problem with unions as top donors, not that that’s not problem enough. Unions and their membership apply added “donation” by coercion and demand upon others — so not only do they funnel a great deal of money to the Left but they also funnel a great deal of additional voters to the Left (via pressure on youth in education and also on customers and patrons in business).

What’s the solution? I think the age of unions needs to end. I’m particularly concerned about unions that consist of teachers/educators and law enforcement because those two areas in our society apply a great deal of pressure if not coercion upon others. The unions get their way politically because of that.

I know its a sick mind that declares itself to be liberal and then attacks liberty at every turn. But its got to be a common failure of rational logic that’s been attached to our genome since cave wall painting clearance sales.
You see one wake up occasionally. An intelligent one, like David Mamet, a celebrity suddenly awakens like Morpheus shoved the red pill up his nose and he says “OMG, I’ve surrounded by vicious tribal demigods!”
But for most its really the self inflicted cheeseypuff disease of choice. The feel good, deep thoughts by Jack Handy, “I’m the good person” thought drug. And when you’re on it you think everyone else is the fascist. For sure! I’ve seen them whisper. Then go right back to kicking somebody with their jackboots. It’s quite a sight.

They have never been liberals, they have always been leftists – socialists, communists, fascists and nazis; leftists – one and all.

The only liberals are libertarians. Even republicans don’t believe in freedom and individual rights. We didn’t get to this police state we are in without their help. Bastards!

By the way, keep Greenpeace’s $400 million budget in mind next time you hear the left complain about the Koch brothers/fossil fuel-funded critics of environmentalism. The combined total budgets for all purposes of AEI, the Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute, and the Hoover Institution is barely half of Greenpeace’s annual budget.

Reid’s behavior on the Senate floor look less like principled populism

“Principled Populism” by a politician is a truly mythical beast even more rare than unicorns, mermaids, and leprechauns.

Can they really be called principles, when Harry Reid’s only goals are retaining incumbency, enriching himself and family, and exercising power without regard to laws, ethics, morality, or honesty.

It’s not projection. It’s a calculated lie. Harry Reid calculates that the lamestream news media will cover for his lie by going along with it and amplifying its reach.

When it comes time to write some books about this period we are experiencing it will be time for the environuts to rejoice.
Books that describe the achievements (you know, the ‘good things’) of ‘Dingy’ Harry Reid and Nancy ‘Stretch’ Pelosi the words will be minimal and the pages few saving a multitude of trees.
I suspect the epilog’s to these single digit page works will add the the description of their leader King Putt:
A COMPLETE AND UTTER FRAUD

Missilengr on June 23, 2014 at 1:48 PM

Why can’t they do any self-examination?

It seems like they simply can not see their own hypocrisy!

The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer, yet that is never the fault of the people making the policies that cause the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer!

It is a strange out of touch world for liberals. Where the things you believe are true, keep producing more of what you claim you hate.

Yet they never learn better.

The problem is the ideology, not the money!

petunia on June 23, 2014 at 6:50 PM

“They reminded DA officials not to reveal the names of their members, in order to provide “a comfortable environment for our partners.”…

As opposed to Lois Lerner and the IRS, who reveal the names of conservative groups and their members to these same progressives, in order to…illegally stop them from functioning. Filthy bastages.
