Mika Brzezinski probes Obama: Wasn’t al-Qaeda supposed to be ‘decimated?’

posted at 10:41 am on June 23, 2014 by Noah Rothman

President Barack Obama took some tough questions from a betrayed Mika Brzezinski in an interview broadcast Monday morning.

The president began by defending his decision to withdraw entirely from Iraq – a move he said was not his decision but Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s as recently as Friday. “Unless we are prepared to stay indefinitely in all these various countries, something that we can’t afford and would involve over time accusations that we were occupying these countries, at some stage they’re going to have to take responsibility for working together,” the president said.

The president arguing fiscal responsibility in this case is dubious considering that America’s financial restraints only seem to enter into his calculation when they are associated with issues of national security. Nevertheless, as expensive as a permanent force in Iraq and Afghanistan might have been, it is also a strategic necessity and should have been perused as an imperative. America maintains residual post-war forces in South Korea, Japan, Germany, and the Balkans – forces which were also accused of being armies of occupation. For past commanders-in-chief, that charge never seemed to carry much weight.

The MSNBC host then asked the president why virtually all of the promises and pronouncements he made regarding his administration’s success in prosecuting the war on terror and eliminating the threat posed by al-Qaeda and insurgent forces in Iraq are proving to be wrong.

“You said that the war was ended in Iraq,” she said. “You said al-Qaeda was decimated. You said it was stable.”

“It was,” Obama replied. “But just because something is stable two years ago or four years ago doesn’t mean that it’s stable right now.”

Finally, Brzezinski asked the obvious question. Given what you know now about the crisis in Iraq, she probed, should you have moved faster to contain the Syrian civil war? To this, an inquiry which has been asked countless times by figures both hostile and friendly to the Obama White House, the president reverted to his comfort zone: attacking straw men.

“If what you’re suggesting is that there was a simple solution in Syria that would have avoided the civil war and chaos there,” Obama replied (she wasn’t), “that’s just not true.”

It is a wonder that Brzezinski did not bristle with offense after having had her question avoided and words put in her mouth, but she apparently found this response credible.

Finally, Obama insisted that his administration cannot play “whack-a-mole” when it comes to terrorist threats to the United States. This is simply preposterous. Not only has the administration been doing just that for the past five years – it is the very essence of his approach to the war on terror – but it is the foundation of the preemptive strike doctrine which both Bush and Obama have pursued. What the president means is that it is too politically toxic to whack this mole in particular.

This incoherent interview on the subject of Iraq is disconcerting. It revealed that the president continues to view this national security threat as a political conundrum.

The actual definition of decimated is “reduced by a 10th”.

PattyJ on June 23, 2014 at 10:53 AM

Mark Steyn:

The roots of ISIS do not lie in the actions America took in 2003. Bush made mistakes in Iraq, and left a ramshackle state that functioned less badly than any of its neighbors. Obama walked away, pulled out a cigarette, tossed the match over his shoulder and ignited a fuse that, from Damascus to Baghdad to Amman and beyond, will blow up the entire Middle East.

Back in America, the coastal sophisticates joke at those knuckle-dragging rubes who believe Obama is some kind of “secret Muslim”. But really Occam’s razor would favor such an explanation, wouldn’t it? That a post-American Middle East divided between bad-cop nuclear Shia and worse-cop head-hacking Sunni was the plan all along. Because there are only alternatives to that simplest of simple explanations:

The first is that Obama and the Z-graders who fill out his administration are just blundering buffoons. And we all know from Michael Beschloss that he’s the smartest president ever, so it couldn’t possibly be colossal stupidity on a scale unknown to American history, could it?

The second is that his contempt for American power – a basic class signifier in the circles in which he’s moved all his life – is so deeply ingrained that he doesn’t care what replaces it.

Obama is thinking post presidency. He can’t go lecturing for money around the college campuses of Berkley,Harvard, & the far left soft spots if he is a “War President”.

Obama’s whole plan was to bring America down to a level playing field with the rest of the world. He views Americans as Imperialists, and having too much power on the global level.

He’s done a pretty darn good job of it.

Obama sees his only enemies as conservative Republicans. Anyone or any group overseas who is mad at the U.S. in Obama’s mind is mad at the U.S. because of past actions by conservative Republicans. That’s why he offers up incoherent answers, because he can’t believe ISIS or the Taliban can’t see he’s not George W. Bush, but is sure if he gives them just a little more time, they’ll figure it out (plus he probably couldn’t believe Mika didn’t throw 100% softballs at him, since in his mind that’s what an MSNBC interview is for. Expect the White House to have already dashed off an email to the network telling them to stop letting Mika be brainwashed by Scarborough).

Whatever happened to that fool Samantha Power and her gobbledygook-gook about Israel being the main problem in the Middle East? They aren’t even involved in any of this! Al-Qaeda was never “decimated”, the Palestinian question is almost an afterthought now and the jihadist battle for control of Sunni populations is getting to an advanced stage. How come we don’t hear from Samantha anymore?

The President doesn’t even seem to understand what the hell is going on, and calling this “whack-a-mole” betrays his ignorance. Between Power and John Kerry, who worries about transgender rights and “oceans”, and Susan Rice, whom they seem to keep around specifically for Sunday news show embarrassment, the weak President is surrounded by very weak and stupid senior advisors.

It must be out of forebearance that China, Russia and others haven’t launched more widespread conflict. It’s pretty obvious we are in very deep trouble and have no leadership.

Islam cannot be eradicated.

It can be discredited and reviled for the barbaric evil it promotes, which would go a long way to diminish its power if it became a widely accepted recognition of reality. But doing so will require the politically correct to actually make a distinctions between religions and the theocracy of Islam based on their principles and teachings. This the Left is very unwilling to do, as it has much to gain politically by lumping all religions together, and particularly by putting Christianity and Islam in the same category.

So we have the preposterous charade on the Left, proclaiming we must respect equally all “religions” out of respect for whatever culture spawned them, even as they bash Christianity, ignore the bloody barbarism and political aspects of Islam, and look down their noses at those with religious beliefs as unenlightened throwbacks, ignorant and superstitious. This they do, purblind to their own religious beliefs, which take non-religious forms but otherwise exhibit all the traits of religious faith and fervor. (Anyone who has spoken with the average Greenpeace supporter should be familiar with the paradigm.)

We have the reality of Islam exploding across the Middle East as the barbarians focus their attention on each other for the time being. The reality is that these 7th century barbarians will murder and oppress each other when they are not preoccupied with murderinging and oppressing the infidels. It is an opportunity to focus attention on that reality, as the MSM will be hard-pressed to ignore the atrocities of these evil Islamists.

If he decimated al-Qaeda like he’s decimated American’s paychecks & spending power, there’d be no terror left in the world.

The president began by defending his decision to withdraw entirely from Iraq – a move he said was not his decision but Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s

Nice strawman you got there. Care if I burn it?

Mailki did not want us there when George Bush was president either. But we negotiated a SOFA that gave us adequate latitude to continue attacking AQ and their affiliates and ensuring the gains we made were secured.

What we wanted in the very simple SOFA that a child could have negotiated, was a force large enough to continue the institution building critical to Iraq securing her own future. That was our militaries recommendation. But Mr. Obama was more focused on the appearance of numbers and politics, rather than purpose. He ultimately made the decision to abandon a force large enough to secure our gains and ensure future security for us. Which leaves us where we are today.

This was all predicted and the media would know that if they weren’t to lazy or partisan to go back, read the warnings and research how the president ultimately made these decisions.

In the end, it is not just that the president was wrong. But it has become more-so how he conveniently ignores substantive facts and tries to deflect blame for decisions he made. It is one thing to make bad decisions. It is completely another, to be mendacious about them.

WHILE OBAMA WAS DECLARING AL QAEDA TO BE ‘DECIMATED’ AND ‘ON THE RUN’, HE WAS ORDERING OUR MILITARY TO HELP AL QAEDA TAKE OVER LIBYA, HELPING THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD TAKE OVER EGYPT, ILLEGALLY RUNNING GUNS TO ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS IN SYRIA, AND WAS DEFENDING MAJOR HASSAN BY DECLARING HIS ‘TERRORIST ATTACK’ WAS REALLY JUST A CASE OF ‘WORKPLACE VIOLENCE’!

AND FOR AN ENCORE, OBAMA RELEASED THE TALIBAN ‘DREAN TEAM’ AND IS NOT LIFTING A FINGER WHILE THE EXTREMISTS HE GAVE ARMS TO IN SYRIA IS NOW CONQUERING THE NATION WE RECENTLY LIBERATED.

I just don’t see how Iran could do it, although they’d love to be able to. The Soviets were trying goofy stuff and would want a commie in the White House, I don’t know of China doing that kind of stuff, but again they’d like a commie in there. Both country’s had the reach back then to put this in motion. The Saudis are really the only muslim country that I could think of that could even remotely pull this off. Someone with real pull got the Ryan’s divorce records unsealed. There’s no way some no name state senator could have done that on his own. Every scenario is of course far fetched, but his actions only make sense through the lens of him being an enemy of America. He was getting help from some shady people.

It all sounds so absurd, but it’s the only explanation I’ve seen that makes his action seem reasonable. I hate thinking that way, but he really is destroying the country on purpose.

Flange on June 23, 2014 at 1:50 PM

Political reality guys, as long as the Democrats control the Senate, Obama will play it this way. Take away the Senate, you take away his power base, period. The next 5 months may decide the future of this country for the next century. The stakes are not just this country of ours, but the world. (Feel better now.)

It revealed that the president continues to view this national security threat as a political conundrum.

Politics the only lens Barry looks thru.

After a half century of cold war, the Soviets could not have imagined a better mole to bring the United States to its knees. Was he a plant or “happy” coincidence for our foes?

freedomfirst on June 23, 2014 at 11:46 AM

The Soviets are responsible for Barry, not in an operational sense, but strategic:

But al-Qaeda didn’t create the ugly streak of nihilism and self-loathing that afflicts too many Western intellectuals. Nor, I believe, is it a natural development. It was brought to us by Department V of the KGB, which was charged during the Cold War with conducting memetic warfare that would destroy the will of the West’s intelligentsia to resist a Communist takeover…
