Great news from Chelsea Clinton: I tried to care about money, but I just can’t

posted at 3:21 pm on June 23, 2014 by Allahpundit

Old theory: Hillary’s going to run despite being a terrible, tone-deaf retail politician. New theory: With her family’s help, Hillary’s going to preemptively disqualify herself so that she doesn’t have to run.

If photos suddenly surface of Bill at a strip club “making it rain” with thousand-dollar bills, we’ll have our answer. Deliberate sabotage would be the only possible explanation for a photo like that, right?

“It is frustrating, because who wants to grow up and follow their parents?” admits Chelsea. “I’ve tried really hard to care about things that were very different from my parents. I was curious if I could care about [money] on some fundamental level, and I couldn’t. That wasn’t the metric of success I wanted in my life. I’ve talked about this to my friends who are doctors and whose parents are doctors, or who are lawyers and their parents are lawyers. It’s a funny thing to realise I feel called to this work both as a daughter and also as someone who believes I have contributions to make.”

I like the idea of someone who lives in a $10 million condo and who “earned” $26,000 per minute interviewing the Geico gecko for NBC quizzing her friends about why they’d want to follow their parents into high-paying professions. I assume she means it as a compliment, i.e. that she wanted their thoughtful advice on the pros and cons of doing what your parents did for a living. But the fact that she prefaces it with the money talk and emphasizes that she spoke to children of doctors and lawyers makes it sound like she thinks they’re doing it for the money, out of greed, instead of doing something more noble like charitable work while coasting off their inheritance. I’m already looking forward to hearing her reprise that argument when she inevitably announces she’s running for Congress. She could have gone into banking, you see, but she’d rather work for you. Even if that means never being “truly well off.”

Fair question from CSM in all this: After 20+ years of limelight, is the Clinton brand really susceptible to change anymore?

Will this hurt Clinton if she runs for president? That’s possible – Republicans are already trying to use it to tar her in the eyes of the electorate. Some on the right even hope that Clinton’s perceived 1 percent problem will drag down Democrats as a whole in the 2014 midterms.

“The phrase ‘limousine liberal’ will be poised for a big comeback this midterm season, and Democrats will have Hillary to thank for it,” writes Ed Morrissey Monday at “Hot Air.”

But we’d say that the vast majority of US voters already have their minds made up about Clinton’s personality, one way or another. She’s been in the public eye at the national level for, what, almost a quarter of a century? It’s both an electoral weakness and a strength that she represents a known political quantity.

It’s not a secret that the Clintons are rich. It’s also not a secret that Bill has a much easier time connecting with the middle class than Hillary does. It’s true that income inequality is far more of a lefty obsession today than it was when Hillary first ran in 2008, but Democrats have never had difficulty electing filthy-rich liberals to champion the working man and Hillary will do plenty of championing in the next two years. The reason her gaffes about money have caught on lately is because they give the left, which doesn’t trust her, a glimmer of hope that a true populist might emerge to challenge her, and they give the right a frisson of schadenfreude in seeing the presumptive Democratic nominee forced to dine on the same class-warfare slop that was fed to Romney in 2012. Whether any of this is shifting opinion among rank-and-file Democrats and the First! Woman! President! crowd, though, is a mystery. Romney was sufficiently unknown to most of the public when he won the nomination that Democrats could “define” him. Not sure the same is true at this point with Hillary. Anyone got a poll?

Actually, maybe we don’t need a poll. The fact that Bill’s now trying to change the subject by dealing with a different Clinton liability suggests that their team thinks these attacks are starting to bite.

Yes Miss Chelsea you don’t care about money– obviously you don’t have to if you afford to buy $900 Christian
Louboutin black heels along with your leather pants. and the liberal elites abused Ann Romney about the cost of the clothes she wore.

oh and try scrounging a few bucks so you can go somewhere on your one or two weeks you have for vacation. I swear between what this idiot says and her idiot mom they’re both clueless and out of touch

jaywemm on June 23, 2014 at 4:33 PM

Sorry, I’m a bit out of touch there myself – haven’t taken a full week or more vacation in many years. My younger son (age 21), who is planning a trip to Hawaii to see his girlfriend, was just commenting about how our last real family vacation anywhere was to San Fran/Napa Valley when he was about 10 years old.

Plop her prodigious behind in a trailer park outside Bakersfield with a 30 year old Pinto and no air conditioning and we’ll see how much she doesn’t care about money…

Wyznowski on June 23, 2014 at 4:54 PM

Chelsea Clinton doesn’t care about money because she’s had lots of it all her life. She probably can’t even imagine life without a huge amount of money, because she believes she will always have it, and she probably will. She’s as clueless as her mother.

RebeccaH on June 23, 2014 at 4:57 PM

It’s also not a secret that Bill has a much easier time connecting with the middle class than Hillary does.

Well, they weren’t nearly as rich in those days.

She’s overly educated but has no common sense. Sounds just like her mother.

You’d be surprised how making $12,000+ a week can make you not care about making money. It truly is magical.

jukin3 on June 23, 2014 at 5:13 PM

There was a young college student on Rush today who mouthed the same idiotic comment about not caring about money. I wanted him to ask her, who’s paying for your tuition, rent and groceries, little girl, not to mention all the extras like birth control. These kids are clueless today. How do they expect to live with the costs of everything going up on a daily basis? Govt cheese only goes so far.

Kissmygrits on June 23, 2014 at 5:14 PM

Most of us care too much about money, what with being consumed by the need to make sure we’ve got enough to cover food, rent, mortgage payments, etc.

We could all stand to learn a lot from…Chelsea Clinton?

If people would only just throw money at me because I was the wastrel spawn of somebody else — you know, hand me a six-figure job right out of college, or pay me $26,000 a minute to do, well, what exactly? — I wouldn’t spend a lot of time thinking about money, either.

The Clintons share a characteristic with the Kennedys: with each passing iteration, they become less capable and more imbecilic.

About 20 years ago, where I worked, we had a divorced secretary who was already struggling a bit financially and her car broke down and needed some expensive work. We also had in the office a retired Air Force Lt Colonel (good 20 year military pension) who was also making a very good DoD contractor senior analyst salary. His comment to our secretary was “just go buy a new car”.
She did NOT appreciate his advice.

His mindset was similar to what we see of this ruling class – since they don’t have any (real) money problems, they don’t have a clue about the kind of money problems us peons have.

It is insulting, her acting like she’s rich but not THAT rich. Nobody cares if you’re rich or not, just don’t act like you aren’t while raking in millions and millions of dollars every year. And Chelsea? Please. Not interesting in money, but yea, I’ll take a $600K salary for doing basically nothing. That’s an insult to real journalists and anchors who worked and scrambled their way up for years.

arnold ziffel on June 23, 2014 at 5:59 PM

Lolz :) I think it also speaks of something else, that she thinks of money as of an end in itself, obviously she’s never had a single innovative or entrepreneurial idea in her head, otherwise she would see money as capital to be re-invested, a way to create jobs via entrepreneurship, etc. In that case it would be completely immaterial and irelevant whteher one ‘likes’ money or not, as long as they achieve something that help other people in the process (as in create jobs). But she sees money just as her parents and the idiot socialists do every time everywhere, as something to grab from the ‘rich’ (read hard working people or talented & bold enentrepreneurs) and re-distribute it to the entitlesc crowd. Sad for a young person to be a slave to an old & proven loser ideology.

unclesmrgol on June 23, 2014 at 8:56 PM

Precisely! The fact that they are rich does not preclude them from avarice and greed. Since many of their “friends” and associates are vastly wealthier than they are, they cannot but compare themselves unfavorably, especially since their entire world view is based on the acquisition of wealth and power.

In short, they need lots of money just to fit in with the wealthy class with whom they have ensconced themselves, whom they pretend to despise. But strip away the gilded veneer of “I don’t care about money, because I have plenty of it” and you’ll catch a glimpse of the ugly green troll of class envy lying just below the surface, Saul Alinsky’s Marxist proteges to the bitter end.

Chelsea rented a $200K diamond waistband to set off her wedding gown “just right” for a day at the Sanford White Mansion. What she MEANS is that she doesn’t keep money she spends it, it isn’t any good sitting in piles doing nothing, in fact it is hard to be interested in when it is just sitting there, it needs to be USED for nice things and good times and travel, and to furnish the new $10 million NYC apartment, especially the nursery.

I know what she means, don’t you? She worked for a hedge fund, she did the London Economics school, it was about as boring as a day out with Mitt Romney.
